Access Wifi Signal 1/2 Mile Away?

Aug 18, 2011

I need to get internet out to my shop computers. The shop is about 1/2 mile away form my house and there is a clear line of sight. I plan on using either a biquad or yagi antenna of some sort.

Can I use something like this?

http:[url]....(I think this would eliminate the need for a router? Also since this is all USB and comes with software designed around it, it should be fairly easy to setup.)Or Would I be better off getting a wrt54g flashed with dd-wrt to act as a repeater?

Transfer Internet Signal 1/2 Mile Via Phone Line?

Sep 5, 2011

I am currently in a situation where I want to share internet between a couple buildings at the site I work at. The problem is that it is a forested area and the buildings are about 1/2 mile away from the source of the internet. The only physical connection of the buildings is the phone lines running between them. Is there any way to use the existing phone line to transfer the internet connection to the other buildings and split it between 2 computers. I know that it would probably involve a substantial loss of speed, but I'm ok with that as the internet at the other buildings will not have heavy use.

Good Wifi Signal But Cannot Access Internet

Apr 5, 2011

I am in a location where I can pick up great wifi signal, but when I connect to this unsecured signal, my page won't load. I ran a diagnostics & Association failed. I would also like to mention that I am also configured to use a broadband usb through a cell phone carrier, but if I can get the wifi free, I certainly don't want to pay for the broadband.By the way, it's an XP operating system.

Access Point Or Wifi Signal Booster / D-link Wireless N Gigabit Router

Jan 2, 2013

Got 1 Linksys WRT54G Router on the ground floor which uses PTCL DSL Internet and 1 D-Link Wireless N Gigabit Router on the first floor which uses World Call Cable Internet of my house. So yeah we have two internet connections.Getting weak signals from both of the routers in my room on the far left side of the house and little to no signals in the basementSo what I want to ask is that should I purchase better routers or should I go with a signal booster of some sorts like an Access Point or a Range Extender? Also is there such a device which would catch signals from both of these differently configured routers ( different internets, different wireless security keys etc ) and then boost them throughout the house if placed in an area where both the router signals are strong?

Cisco Wireless :: 1200 - 1.5 Mile AP To WGB Connection

Jan 23, 2012

I have 2 Cisco 1200 G AP's connecting 2 different locations.  Location A ( La ) I have a RVO82 router connected to a 50Mbit cable connection.  I have an AP setup there using a 1 Watt booster and a 24db wire grid directional antenna. Only one antenna here, the other disabled.

At Location B  (Lb ), about 1.5 miles away, with good to excellent line of site, i have the other setup as a WGB with a 15db wire grid directional antenna with a 1 Watt booster.  Also only one antenna here, the other disabled.

WGB feeds a simple 8 port switch and in that switch i have a simple belkin wireless router setup as an AP for Lb's wireless access,

The signal strenght between the two locations is -49 to -52 db, depending on what time of day I check it.

I have had this setup for a couple of years now.  I recently switched from a 3Mbit DSL connection to the 50Mbit cable connection hoping to increase my bandwidth with no luck.
.
When I first set this up i had a 6Mbit cable connection and it maxxed out at 5 Mbit at Lb.  I thought i would be able to add more boosters and antennas as time went on to go from half duplex to full duplex (the way i think of it is one antenna receiving and the other sending, at both locations) so that when our ISP had faster rates available, i could upgrade. I recently read somewhere on the net that it is not possible to run full duplex in the AP to WGB setup i have.  Is that true?

My main concern is increasing bandwidth on the WGB side Lb.  When i upgraded to 50Mbit, i still only max out at 5mbit at Lb.  Before i thought it was due to not being full duplex or weaker signal strengths (I've always had the 1watt booster at Lb, then i added one later to La with no benefit noticed except signal strength is better and uploads seem faster from Lb....)

How To Get A Stronger Wifi Signal

Apr 15, 2012

My parents ditched their Comcast cable last year. Their house association has provided 'Wifi' for everyone in the neighborhood as part of the association fee. However, signal is very weak, even though they are one of the closest to the Wifi Antennas. They have a laptop, two desktops, and one Ipad. Their laptop seems fine. Both of the desktop, however, are very slow. It's slower than 56k. It's almost unbearable. They still have all their modems/router from Comcast. I am wondering a way to get the Wifi signal, and use the Comcast Router to create a Wifi in their house again so they can print wireless and use netflix and things like that. I don't know the exact definition for it. I'm just wondering if it can be done.

Strong Wifi Signal / No Connection

Aug 28, 2012

I just got a job at a School district that has an extremly old and basic network setup (No Firewall, only 2 accounts on the server Student and Teacher). They have two small buildings that have 1 wireless router on each floor about in the middle of the hallway. I am having a strange issue I haven't seen before with a windows 7 laptop that a few of the teachers in the district are having. They can see the wireless router on the network but everytime they try and connect it says "Windows Cannot Connect or is Denied Access". All the other laptops in the building connect fine.Heres what I have done so far.

-Power cycled the router, nothing.
-ipconfig /release, and renew, nothing.
-Getting closer to the router and connecting, nothing. (Also tried with a differant laptop in the room and it could connect no problem which confused me more)
-Updating the network card.(says it has the latest updates)
-Re-entering the network key, nothing

What I haven't tried is setting up manually a static IP. But do I need to do that? And if so how do I know which IP to give it is there a way I can generate a list of all the IP's on the network?

Ps3 Networking Poor Wifi Signal

Nov 11, 2012

went to set up ps3 and see that the wifi signal is particularly bad (30%) for online. There is no possible way of getting the router near the ps3.I am think that a pair of tp-link powerlines may play a role here, but may be mistaken. What are peoples experiences. would something like that increase ps3 signal? would 200mbps or 500mbps be better (they do diffferent models). I understand that it would make the connection for the ps3 wired, but am I right in thinking the laptop would just operate over wifi as it does already?

How To Increase Wifi Signal Strength

Jun 3, 2012

I have computers scattered across our home, and in many areas it is not feasible to run ethernet cable. At one location (less than 30 feet away) but through multiple walls, I can barely connect to any POS (I have two). I added a stand alone antenna extension with long antennas on both the router and the WiFi card on the PC, however, this made zero improvement. What should I be looking to purchase to increase the signal strength? I've already tried different routers.

Losing Wifi Signal Intermittently Constantly

Dec 19, 2011

I've been having a problem with my wifi connection.I give my neighbor $15 a month to use his connection, so I have no control over the router.I'll be surfing along or just checking mail or whatever and out of the blue my connection stops. A little yellow triangle "warning" sign covers the signal strength meter in the lower right corner. If I click on the signal meter, up pops the list of wireless connections available to me and says that I'm connected, (but I'm not). So I go to the network and sharing center and sometimes this alone will restart the signal but usually I have to run the troubleshooter and the signal will come back with no explanation of what the problem is.While in the network and sharing center, my connection to the router looks clear and connected but shows a red X over the connection between the router and Internet.

Tp-link Repeating A Weak Wifi Signal

I have setup this situation using a netgear dsl modem and a netgear wireless router which if i remember i made a mac bridge, and it works great..am i wasting my time trying to get a TP-link talking to a cheap isp modem? i was reading an article somebody wrote that was doing the same thing yet the modem wasnt the same as mine, they said they got it working using WDS...and that the tp-link doesnt know about WDS and you need to use telnet to change settings on the tp-link looked a real hassle anyway.

Wifi Signal Is Of Poor Quality On 3rd Floor

Dec 11, 2012

I have a wireless router on the ground floor of my home which is wired to my PC on the 3rd floor. The wifi signal is of poor quality on the 3rd floor. I cannot move the router to a different floor since all of my connections are wired through the home into my networking room (on the ground floor where my router is). I wish to add a media receiver to a different room on the 3rd floor that is not wired already for networking. Streaming video files wirelessly to the media receiver from my router will not work because as stated previously the signal quality is poor on the 3rd floor. My mobo on my computer has ASUS wifi GO. Can I enable the wifi go on the mobo of my PC (located on 3rd floor) to connect to the media receiver (also on the 3rd floor) for streaming? The media receiver will also have an internet browser so will I be able to connect to the internet as well if it is networked to my PC and my PC is connected to my router on the ground floor?

I basically want to keep my PC connected to my main router for high DL speeds and also have my PC networked wirelessly to my media receiver using the on board wifi go. If possible I'd also like to be able to access the internet on the media receiver via the PC.

D-link Dir-655 :: Stops Broadcasting Wifi Signal

Jun 20, 2011

I bought a DIR-655 (F/W v. 2.00NA) about 6 months ago. It worked well until a couple of weeks ago. Then it started to stop broadcasting WIFI signal without apparent reason. When it did so, I could still connect to it and internet with wired connection, but the WIFI scan does not show my SSID. If I reboot it (either through the admin interface, or just disconnect and reconnect the power), I would be able to reconnect to WIFI, but then WIFI will stop working again in about 8-10 hours. I am rebooting this thing 2-3 times a days and it is very frustrating. Curiously, I borrowed a N300 router to try out
