May 30, 2012I was wondering why there are so many different types of optical connectors? - sc, fc, lc, e2000? Why the devices have different connectors? Dispite the fact that some of them are push/pull, and some of them are not, and if there are specific types for multimode and singlemode, and full/half duplex.

Does the 100ft cable make a difference or does the fact that it's a cat6 cable make a difference?
When moving similar files at work, it's faster. So I'm trying to find out what's the bottleneck at home. What speeds should I expect for a home network?

Upstairs on the 1st and 2nd floor of the house are many devices in which wifi is fine or preferred.Here's the problem: As you might guess, wifi is weak upstairs and certainly on the patio and 2nd floor. It has to be coming from my neighbor who's bedroom is about 15 feet away from my router. So unless someone is sitting out on my front lawn to do this then it must be him.I've been looking for software that will notify me when a connection my router is attempted and kudos if it also asks my permission first would be great.There are wifi packet sniffers out there like Cain&Abel, Airsnort, that sort of thing but I am not quite savvy enough nor do I want to turn this into a complicated hobby but just need a basic warningin case something gets past my passwords again

May 8, 2012have a home network setup that works completely fine everywhere in the house except one room. That room happens to be my son's room that has his Xbox 360 in it. He wants to play online but I cant get a signal back in there and if I do it is extremely weak. I have a linksys E2500 router connected to my cable modem that is wired ot one computer and then my 2 laptops connect to the wireless from that router. The Playstation 3 that is about 15 feet away works fine as well. All our ipods and iPhones work well too. It is only his bedroom where we run into trouble with any of these devices. Jan 19, 2011I recently got my laptop fixed after it being out of commission for about a year (it turns out there was just too much dust collecting in it) and when I got home and tried to connect to my wifi network, I didn't have internet access. I received a message that said I had sucessfully connected to my network but it was only a local connection - no internet. It also shows up as "Unidentified Network." This is peculiar to me because my boyfriend's laptop is able to connect to the internet wirelessly just fine, and I am currently using the wifi on my iPhone. I ran the ipconfig and several ping tests in cmd and used a wifi inspector.

Sep 7, 2012setting up a single home network in my apartment that will be able to connect to and use 2 separate wifi internet connections to provide stability and reliable bandwidth for a home network.
Situation: I have recently moved into an apartment complex that has 2 separate wifi connections that are available to the residents free of charge. (yes i am authorized to use both) I do have the option of paying for and having my own personal DSL line installed but I would much rather use the free wifi and not have the monthly bill.
The Problem: My apartment is located far enough away from each of the routers (One wifi at each end of the building and I am in the middle) that my signal strength is poor most of the time and sometimes heavy traffic on one wifi requires that I disconnect and connect to the other. Wifi A is farther and has very low signal and low or no connectivity. Wifi B has good signal most of the time but gets very slow during peek usage times of the day.
I understand that I need one or more high gain antennas in order to receive adequate signals from either Wifi connection.
Between me and my son we have 2 laptop PCs, 1 Desktop PC, 1 network printer, 1 Xbox, 1 HDTV and my smartphone. I don't want to try to equip each device with its own high gain antenna and try to figure out which device should be connected to which Wifi depending on available signal and bandwidth. Rite now I do not have a Home network set up at all and we are only using 1 laptop and the Xbox and each is directly connected via wifi (usually to Wifi B).
If I could connect to either Wifi A or B with decent bandwidth and reliability and then be able to network or connect all my devices via wireless or wired to my own router/extender etc. I would be happy. However.. Given that I must share bandwidth with the other residents and at times one Wifi has heavy use while the other does not. I have been trying to research how to connect to both wifi signals for load balancing, reliability and hopefully greater bandwidth.

The card that I'm planning to get is an Intel 5300 which has 3 antennas.Since the normal wifi only has two antennas, can I use the 3G WWAN as a third antenna? If yes, should I plug in the "Main" or the "Aux"? If no, Should I buy those additonal antennas in Ebay for the 3rd one?

Apr 12, 2011My IPTV connection works fine so far but as soon as I start watching TV I can't use my WiFi connection anymore. My router is an "Alice Modem 1121" (SIEMENS S1621-Z220-A) with 4 LAN ports and a WiFi interface (4th LAN port provides the IPTV). It is directly connected by wire to my PC's ethernet card for the IPTV and the internet is provided via the WiFi. When I activate the LAN connection the WiFi and internet connction stays up and requests can be sent but nothing returns anymore. Another device (iPod) has no problems with accessing the internet while IPTV is in use. I also have a Netgear WNR1000v3 router which I tried to use as AP instead but it's exactly the same problem. Unlucky the Netgear router is not supported to use dd-wrt firmware yet (I've found a step by step guide to prevent multicast floods with dd-wrt/ebtables). But maybe the Alice Modem can handle this problem on its own. I read some stuff about VLANs and splitting them but I have no clue how that would look like.

Home Network :: Mobile Broadband Router To Wifi?
Aug 14, 2011Currently I am hosting a 7 day mountain retreat, for about 90+ people. Clearly they are dependent on the internet teet as am I I am trying very hard to provide internet to our friends, but I just can't seem to figure it out I have a Mobile Broadband Router (MBBR) which limits connected devices to 6, so I figured that if connect a home router with wifi (WIFI) that allows 253 connections problem solved right? So I put a short LAN cable from the LAN port on the MBBR to the WAN port on the WIFI and presto! The WIFI gets a IP address, but does not allow other users of the WIFI to get internet. I've even killed all security on the WIFI and put the WIFIs IP in the DMZ on the MBBR. I noticed the DNS was the same as the gateway on the WIFI, so I changed that to the DNS on the MBBR still nothing.
PS Yes I have a connection on the MBBR I am on it now.Connecting the LAN cable from the MBBRs LAN to the WIFIs LAN extends the range, and grants internet to the WIFI users... but uses the MBBRs DHCP to give IP addresses, which limits to 6.I guess the goal here is bypass the limitation of the MBBR by using the WIFIs DHCP to issue IPs?

When I plugin with an ethernet cable to the router, I have no problems and I get the full 15mbps speed when doing speed tests and downloads. IE, Firefox, and Chrome all work fine.When I use the wireless, I only get 5mbps in IE and Firefox, but I get the full 15mbps again when using Chrome.I'm starting to wonder if there are shared Windows components being used by Firefox and IE, but not being used by Chrome. I have reinstalled my wireless adapter driver and it didn't affect anything. I've disabled Windows Firewall, checked for malware, confirmed no proxy was setup in Internet Options, on and on...

Aug 15, 2012Normally use internet explorer 9, but I've tried Firefox and Chrome also.For some weird reason the Wi-Fi on my computer is super slow. My roommate has no problems at all. Same issue when only one of us are connected. What's really weird is that it's only on my home network the speed is a problem. At school and at other family members houses everything is working perfectly. I now use wired internet connection, and when I take a speedtest it is around 13MB, so the speed is pretty good.
I can mention that sometimes if my computer has been closed and the cable is taken out, when I turn the computer back on the Wi-Fi is suddenly working perfectly. Only for a while though, and then it's not working anymore. Has happened more rarely recently.I've been having this problem for around 7weeks now. When I first discovered the problem I tried to uninstall the latest updates (among windows updates), and it actually worked. But I want my computer to be up to date, so it's not a go to use those settings.
I have tried to reset the router to factory settings, but that did not work.We share internet with our landlord, so to privatize what we do, it's set up like this: Landlords modem -> switch in our apartment -> wireless router But that should not be problem. It's working on everyone else's computers. My mobile phone as no issues either;I've tried to update the driver on the wireless card, but it's up to date.
