How To Turn A Xp Desktop Into Wifi Hotspot
May 12, 2011
The problem is: My Vista laptop cannot find the Wi-Fi hotspot I just create, although it appears on my XP desktop. If I used the included software to make my adapter as a Router, my Vista laptop can find the network and can connect to it. The problem is the internet connection always shows 'Identifying IP address' and later on it shows 'Unidentified IP address'.I also tried to hook up my laptop with the wire connection and using Vista to do the vice versa. (I did this before once when my friends and I went to Vegas and we were able to turn my laptop into a wi-fi hotspot through the hotel's wire internet). I'm able to setup a wi-fi network but:
+ Using the Wireless Connections of Windows XP, my desktop cannot find the hotspot.
+ Using the included software with the adapter, I can connect to the wifi network, but it's unable to go to Internet.

1st. I have a desktop and nearby there is wireless internet WiFi hotspot. How can I connect it to the wireless internet WiFi? I am thinking of buying this: http:[url]....Apart from that adapter do I need something else?
2nd. Where the desktop is, I have no reception. I mean because my cellphone has no reception when it is in the same place where the desktop is. But when I put my cellphone in the window around 12 feet away, there is reception. So I am wondering if I can make a 12 feet long USB cable from the desktop to the window and with the Wifi/WLAN Wireless Network USB Adapter in the window.

I need to know how to change the wifi channel of the connection. connectify can't do it. I guess you have to set it somewhere in the network card settings, but I'm quite a noob when it's about wireless network. googling my problem didn't get me any good result since all the threads about channel setup are about modem/router wifi channel setting, can't find anything about hotspots.

I just purchased a T-Mobile hotspot (ZTE) yesterday. It can connect to the T-Mobile network and appears to be working fine. My Wii can connect wirelessly to the the hotspot, but my laptop can only connect to the internet through the USB cord (which it's really not supposed to, because that's supposed to be for charging the device). When I try to connect via wifi to my hotspot, my computer can detect the network. However, after I immediately enter my password, it says that it cannot connect. When I click "Diagnose the problem" it says there was a timeout.I have Windows Vista and one of the tech support people mentioned that Windows Vista sometimes has problems connecting with handshake devices (but he didn't know how to fix it). Another person said I should have about 20 seconds to type in my password, so it shouldn't be timing out so quickly. Is it something with my computer? I have a Compaq Presario CQ60. I had this same problem when I tried to connect to a friend's hotspot a couple weeks ago (I don't remember if it was also T-Mobile or another provider, though).

Anyway, I have a Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4056 with Win7 Home Premium 64-bit. I've had it almost a year now and have never had trouble connecting to public wifi.Recently, I moved into a new apartment with free wifi and I seem to catch the signal from my apt even though it is poor. Every time I try to connect with my Toshiba it says, "Windows is unable to connect to 'linksys'." However, my husband's HP laptop and my old eMachines laptop (7yr old) (which I am using to research the problem) can connect with absolutely no issues. When I go to the clubhouse, my Toshiba can connect, however it cannot identify the network and does not receive an actual internet connection.
So far, I have uninstalled/reinstalled and updated my network adapter (Realtek RTL8188CE), I've used Command Prompt ipconfig /reset and ipconfig /release along with several other commands suggested to other wifi connection problemsI've checked my DHCP and DNS to ensure they're enabled. As for firewalls, I have turned off windows firewall and have disabled Kaspersky protection, however I have yet to uninstall and reinstall, this being because I can connect to a password prompted internet connection at work.I am unsure how to check my IP address or any of that

I have a local network that I want to connect to a WiFi site. The site is a free service offered to our community by a local ISP. The network uses a wireless router but cable links the two relatively old PCs. They are used for a single inventory-accounting program. One serves as the softwre host. The organization wants episodic Internet access so they can use a software update auto installation service. There are alternative ways to accomplish these updates, but this pathway is the only one acceptable to the organization. Why they reject a simple thumb drive using an out of system download is beyond me, but it seems to be a locked in idea. Oh, the current wireless router cannot accept DD-WRT, but one is available if it can be used if useable.

Have a problem with Wi-Fi, and going to work on this computer over the weekend. So before I get my hands on it, hoping to get some suggestions on how to get it done. The time for a fix will be limited. Wi-Fi always disconnects after about 1 hour of connection to a Wi-Fi hotspot under Windows 7 via Bootcamp. These Wi-Fi drops happen in every hotspot (fast food, hotel, other free Wi-Fi) so far.Works without drops when connected to same Wi-Fi hotspots in Mac OSX 10.x.Even works in Windows 7 when using own, separate Verizon 4G mobile hotspot, model MIFI 4510L. But again not when connected to the hotel hotspots/routers.Loses Wi-Fi connection after about an hour when on regular Wi-Fi (via router/hotspot). Happens on different Wi-Fi networks in different places -- same problem.Checked online and saw lots of people having Wi-Fi disconnection problems in Windows 7 on Mac Books (Pro and Air). Also saw people having lots of disconnection problems with just Windows 7 (without a Mac).
What makes Verizon 4G hotspot so different from other hotspots? Is it protocols? Different encryption? Something else?Obviously I can't change the settings on the routers (as they are the establishment's and are different in every place). I can only change something locally on the laptop itself.I have very limited amount of time to apply any fixes I can think of. About 1 hour; 1 and a half max. I know that it's not best for trying to troubleshoot it, but that's all I have this week to work on it. In a few weeks I might have more time to spend with it. Laptop may have Hide My Ass Pro VPN proxy installed. Can't verify at the moment. OSX has it for sure. Windows side -- not positive. But switching it off will be the first thing I'll try. What steps to try to undertake and in which order. Any way to monitor the connection live and see what caused the disconnect? Say a live or recorded log of network card and router communication? Reinstall drivers? Any better drivers available for it? The Wireless card is called Airport officially. But if remember correctly it is: Broadcom BCM43xx.

I just bought a laptop installed with Windows 8. I want to connect my iPhone to the Internet through the laptop. I have tried using Connectify to set up a WiFi hotspot. It works only with WEP and my iPhone can connect to the Internet but my iPhone disconnects from the hotspot after a while and I need to restart my Connectify hotspot, which is really annoying.I googled online and find that I can use the netsh command to set up the hotspot. I run command prompt in administrator mode and type in the following:
netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=adhocnetwork key=password
netsh wlan start hostednetwork
And then I share the wired network through control panel > network connections > ethernet > properties.I connect my iPhone to the hosted network and typed in the password. I see a tick next to the SSID, meaning it can connect to the hosted network.I also check the status of the hosted network. Both IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity show Internet. But when I open Safari on my iPhone, it says no Internet.

I've got a WiFi router which I'd now like to connect through my Android phone's 3g hotspot. The router is a Trendnet TEW-691GR. The phone: an old Motorola Milestone.
The reason I'm attempting this is the ADSL (or other wireless) in the area is simply tooooooo slooooowww to even consider. I'm lucky to get 40kb/s through the ADSL, but linking through the phone's hotspot allows in excess of 2MB/s - price wise it's not much of a difference. So I thought: "Why not simply use my phone's connection (seeing as I'm paying for it already - uncapped as well), and drop the ADSL contract?"
Only: the router was fine for the ADSL modem. But I'm failing to see how to connect it to the hotspot. I can connect the phone to the router quite easily. But if the hotspot is turned on the connection needs to go the other way round - doesn't it?
Anyhow most of the PC's & Laptops have a wireless connection, so I can directly connect to the hotspot from each of these. This now causes further issues: One of the PCs (I use it as a pseudo server) only has a LAN connection to the router. Also if a laptop is connected to the hotspot it cannot be connected to the router - thus it's incapable of seeing the shares on the "server".
I was thinking of attempting the router's WDS setup, but it requires the MAC address of the other wireless device(s). And for the love of Pete I cannot find the phone's MAC while its hotspot is turned on (simply says MAC address unavailable on the phone). I can find it when the hotspot is off, and have tried using that MAC, then turn the hotspot on and reboot the router - but still it doesn't connect to the hotspot.

I go through the AE2500 installation and Device Manager shows it is installed properly. However, I do not see the adapter in my list of available wireless connections and I'm unabley to disconnect my router connection. I keep clicking disconnect but it never does.

I've got wireless internet which I access on two laptops and an ipod touch.Recently, on the ipod touch I have been able to browse for a while then the internet stops loading pages. It shows I am still connected but I have to turn off the WIFI and then turn it back on again and reconnect and everything is ok for a while. Now it is starting to happen on one of the Windows XP Home laptops.I browse for a while, then pages stop loading. I am still connected. If I turn the WIFI adapter on the laptop off then on again and reconnect I can surf for a while. During the period I cannot surf on the laptop I can on the ipod so there is a live connection beyond the router.

I can't turn WI-FI on in my Toshiba A 665, Win 7. At the biginning worked good ,than vanished. Checking Fn > F8 below main icon (with an antena ) do not show up other four icons below, like they suppose to do. So I'm not even able to try to turn it on. Restarting doesn't do at all. Pushing Wi-fi switch, above the keybord, doesn't even show On/of icon.
