View 5 Replies View RelatedAnyway, a neighbour is letting us share their broadband by way of a wifi connection (on a very long USB lead into the front garden...) but this only works on one PC.The PC is right next to the Orange router (Brightbox) but so far I've failed to do anything like bridge the connections from wifi to ethernet to the router and beyond. Should I persevere with this? I don't understand how this would work in terms of DHCP and routing IP traffic.I'm prepared to buy new kit if necessary (but not much). Most of my equipment is wifi enabled but due to the signal strength of my neighbour's wifi you have to be on the front lawn to get a signal.

View 2 Replies View RelatedRight guys, after looking at a few university's at open days, the one thing I realised is that all the halls of residence only have cabled Internet.Basically you have to plug an Ethernet into your computer/laptop to get online, only problem is, I have recently switched to an iPad. (Wifi only)My idea was to take one of my old wireless routers from home and just plug the Ethernet cable into the router and bingo, I have wireless Internet? Is this correct? If not, can you let me know how I should go about getting wireless Internet in my dorm.

View 1 Replies View RelatedThe problem is: My Vista laptop cannot find the Wi-Fi hotspot I just create, although it appears on my XP desktop. If I used the included software to make my adapter as a Router, my Vista laptop can find the network and can connect to it. The problem is the internet connection always shows 'Identifying IP address' and later on it shows 'Unidentified IP address'.I also tried to hook up my laptop with the wire connection and using Vista to do the vice versa. (I did this before once when my friends and I went to Vegas and we were able to turn my laptop into a wi-fi hotspot through the hotel's wire internet). I'm able to setup a wi-fi network but:
+ Using the Wireless Connections of Windows XP, my desktop cannot find the hotspot.
+ Using the included software with the adapter, I can connect to the wifi network, but it's unable to go to Internet.
I've got wireless internet which I access on two laptops and an ipod touch.Recently, on the ipod touch I have been able to browse for a while then the internet stops loading pages. It shows I am still connected but I have to turn off the WIFI and then turn it back on again and reconnect and everything is ok for a while. Now it is starting to happen on one of the Windows XP Home laptops.I browse for a while, then pages stop loading. I am still connected. If I turn the WIFI adapter on the laptop off then on again and reconnect I can surf for a while. During the period I cannot surf on the laptop I can on the ipod so there is a live connection beyond the router.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently switched my router from an older Linksys WRT 54GS to an E3000. The WRT 54GS was working perfectly fine, but I needed to upgrade to a 802.11n router to use with some of my devices at home. I unplugged all the cables from the WRT54GS, and connected all the cables into the E3000 - in the exact same sockets and order they were on the old router. When powering on, all the lights eventually turned on (Power, Internet and Ports 1 to 4), except the wifi is still off. I tried running the installation CD, but it says it cannot find the network. I tried a reset (back button) as well as 30-30-30 reset, but no matter what I do, the wifi indicator still doesn't turn on. When switching back to the old router, it has no problem broadcasting a wifi signal again. Is there anything else I should try, either on my PC settings or the E3000 router itself?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a WAP54G in my basement shop, wired to our main router upstairs, which is a Linksys BEFSR81. I'm not sure if this is an issue with the WAP or the router.
I only use the laptop computer in the shop every couple of days, but I leave the laptop plugged in and on most of the time. I used to have the power settings such that it didn't power down completely even after a long time. With that setup, if i didn't use the computer for several days, it would find that the connection to the router had died. The wireless link would report that it had a solid connection, but I couldn't connect to anything. Power cycling the WAP always fixed this.
Recently, I decided to save some wear & tear on the laptop drive, and adjusted the power settings to go to standby after a couple of hours. Now, it seems I can't even go one day without losing my connection.
I am running the latest frimware in the WAP, and the router is version 3.1. I can't check the firmware version on the router at the moment, because the web interface is giving me a blank screen. I know from past experience that I will have to power cycle it to get it to talk to me again.
In any event, it seems like the router connection to the WAP is timing out. I set the router "client lease time" up to 10000 a while back when I first had this problem, but that is clearly not doing the trick.
