I have a laptop connected to internet via a router using WiFi.My desktop computer doesn't have a WiFi connection. I want to connect my laptop and my desktop computer using an ethernet cable in order to access the internet on my desktop computer. I've been fiddling around for over two hours with no luck so far. Both computers are on Windows 7.
View 3 RepliesRight guys, after looking at a few university's at open days, the one thing I realised is that all the halls of residence only have cabled Internet.Basically you have to plug an Ethernet into your computer/laptop to get online, only problem is, I have recently switched to an iPad. (Wifi only)My idea was to take one of my old wireless routers from home and just plug the Ethernet cable into the router and bingo, I have wireless Internet? Is this correct? If not, can you let me know how I should go about getting wireless Internet in my dorm.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have two wifi routers which I have connected together with an ethernet cable to extend coverage across my house. The ethernet cable is connected to a LAN port on the first router and the internet port of the second router. This works fine and creates a second network that I can connect to the net on. The problem iseemingly randomly, about every 15 minutes, the second router will lose internet connection. My laptops and phone still stay connected to it, but windows lists it as having no internet connection. If I then wait a couple of minutes and reconnect, internet will be working again.
View 4 Replies View RelatedAnyway, a neighbour is letting us share their broadband by way of a wifi connection (on a very long USB lead into the front garden...) but this only works on one PC.The PC is right next to the Orange router (Brightbox) but so far I've failed to do anything like bridge the connections from wifi to ethernet to the router and beyond. Should I persevere with this? I don't understand how this would work in terms of DHCP and routing IP traffic.I'm prepared to buy new kit if necessary (but not much). Most of my equipment is wifi enabled but due to the signal strength of my neighbour's wifi you have to be on the front lawn to get a signal.

Everything on the network works great except when I turn on my cell phone's wifi connection. That disconnects my entire network from the internet and I have to unplug/replug my wired router to get reconnected. If I leave home with my phone and return, leaving the cell's wifi setting on, it reconnects to the network without disrupting the internet connection.

I've just bought a TP-Link TL_WR1043ND and when I was configuring the wireless settings first I had a +- 40Mbps connection,a little later the connection dropped to 4Mbps and was constantly dropping the speed.Sometimes it went to 15Mbps and then it drops back to 4Mbps.Right now its only 1Mbps.

On the basement level, and on level 2, I have in wall junction boxes where the Cat5E Ethernet wires come together. There are 6 lines that go from the level 2 box to 6 wall jacks on levels 2 and 3. There are also 6 lines that go from the basement box to 6 wall jacks in the basement and on level 1. There is also a Cat5E line running between the two boxes.I have wired all these plugs on both ends with T568B standard, and in each box they go into a patch panel. I have used a cable tester to test and make sure all these plugs are properly wired. I have also tested individual computers hardwired linked through to my router (without going through switches) and confirmed that they work that way, so I'm pretty sure I've wired it correctly.
At the second floor box, I have an AT&T 2Wire wifi router and modem, with AT&T Uverse service. I also have a monoprice Ethernet switch. In the basement box, I have another monoprice Ethernet switch (link to the type of switches I have is below). The switches are connected together via the Cat5E that runs between the boxes, and the second floor switch is connected to a free port on the back of the AT&T 2Wire Uverse wifi router.These wall plugs are not all currently used. In fact the problem I describe below occurs even if nothing is plugged into the wall plates.My problem is: when I hook up everything, so my wifi router is wired to the first switch, which is in turn wired to the 6 wall plugs upstairs as well as to the switch in the basement, and that basement switch is in turn wired to the 6 wall plates downstairs... at that point when I plug it in, my wifi stops working. Basically, whenever my router is plugged into this hard wired network, the wifi stops working. When I unplug the network, the wifi comes back (I usually reset it, not certain if it would come back just from waiting).
Interestingly, it doesn't necessarily stop working if most or all of the plugs are removed so the network is not connected (for example, if I just go through one plug instead of all of them)Does a network of wired Ethernet, even if not plugged into anything, cause some sort of a load or drain on the router that could make it stop working?
I have a HTPC running XP and a Media Player connected on the same wired network. I also have a Win7 laptop connected to the same network over Wifi.
From the laptop I want to send files between the HTPC and Media player on the wired network however if I drag and drop or use the "send to" option they are sent via the wirelss laptop which is very slow.
Am I missing a trick how can I send files directly between the 2 devices?
I'm sort of new to networks so I'm not sure if this is even possible but what I'm trying to do is set up a wired network between computers but leave the wifi on the computer as how it connects to the internet. No internet output from WRT54G wired or wireless, but wireless network is recognized by computer, just no internet. I did a reset and installed the latest firmware, then I ran thru the setup CD that came withe the router, and the internet test said no internet connection was available. Cables are fine, connector innards look clean.

Before I turn off the router, my roku connection is good.In the morning, the roku will work for about 20 minutes, then disconnects, and then I'm unable to find the router.I'll then need to reset my router's settings (I have the WRT54GS), and then uplug, and replug the router.It's important that I unplug the router every night.Is there a way to configure the settings so I don't have to reconfigure the settings every morning?

Can see it as wireless network, but cannot configure it with web browser. Address 192.168.1.245 just times out via pings as well. Have done all resets, power on reset, etc nothing.

I have many other wireless devices also running off the E3200, but my PC is the only wired device connected to it. When I replace the wired PC do I simply switch the new one in with the existing ethernet connection (I'm sure it is not that simple) or do I have to start over again recreating my entire network..security etc.. ? If so what is the process to start over ? Do I have to reset something on the router, reload cisco connect, create a new network name?

I run and admin it, so the chances that anyone else has changed anything is essentially zero.This computer has a wired network connection (The issue) and a wireless one. They are connected to two separate networks. A few days ago the wired card stopped getting an IP address from my router, always ended up with a 169 address. Eventually I just disabled it, and installed a PCI network card.
Now what happens is that all works fine for a while, then stops. Suddenly I am "Not connected to network" despite the fact my ip address hasn't changed. I run the network troubleshooter, it tells me the "Gateway is unreachable" Resets the network card, and all is good. Then after a while the network fails again. I did already scan with malwarebytes, and everything is fine as fat as its concerned.
I'm able to access the internet through my wireless network on my laptop, but not on the computer I have wired straight to the router. Isn't that weird?

I had moved the computer and intended to use a wireless connection on my existing Linksys router. I had gone so far as to install a driver for a USB adapter and seemed to be connected OK although the machine was a little slow to respond. At that point I realized I needed to secure the network. The first thing I read was that I needed a wired connection to the router to do that. I used Ghost to restore to a time before I installed the driver and then, with the computer shut down, hooked up an Ethernet cable from the router to the computer and booted up. I expected to be connected as I was before the move but am not. Ive got the icon in the tray that says a LAN cable is un-plugged and dont know what to do to get connected again.

The connection speed is spotty and fluctuates between downloading at around 100-200kBs and having a ping of around 30 in online games (rare) or download rates measure in bytes (normal). Google takes about 10 seconds to load and I can't access steam. I was wondering if this was due to the length of the cable running the length of the garden (about 20m) or some other issue - it is not the computer as I get the same result with my laptop and my desktop, both of which have no trouble when connecting in the main house.

I have a Cisco Linksys E2500 which is bridged to a actiontec mi424wr router (Verizon Fios router). My fiance's computer is wired while my laptop is wireless.When I originally set up the network I had 2 mi424wr bridged together but it dropped very frequently. Switching the router and upgrading the firmware has made in happen less but it is still frequent enough to warrant trouble.

The connection to the internet severs every couple of minutes, sometimes every few seconds. The only way to get my connection back is to either wait around half an hour and it fixes itself, or to use the ''diagnose connection problems'' in the INternet Explorer tools menu. For some reason this tool fixes the problem nearly everytime, how often I have to use this tool and wait for the internet. I cannot download many important things I need as the connection keeps severing and the download is 'interrupted' (within Google Chrome).I first tried reformatting my whole system, but to no avail. I am running a fresh installation of Windows XP service Pack 3.
I have a cable running from my wall (ADSL conection I believe) that connects into a router. This router is then connected to ANOTHER router via a blue network cable (Im not quite sure the reason for this my step-dad had it set up like this when I moved here. I think it is because the 2nd router does not have a jack that fits the ADSL line coming from the wall). I am wired directly from my computer into the first router. I have tried connecting to the other router to no avail. Chrome generally tells me that there is a DNS error when I try to load a page and the connection drops out. I would like to know if replacing the cables/router would fix things.
As soon as i modify my wireless to be unsecured, I looy ability to usse me the internet on all wired ports as well as all wireless. From the routers point of view it still has a good solid internet connection. Passes traceroute, but wont allow any wired or wireless connections on the internet. I'm trying to get a Linksys WRE54G v1 to work with this so my parents can have internet once more. If i manualy remove the security to allow the one touch Auto configuration button to work i loose my ability to surf until i run the Cisco Connection software to turn back on the passwords.

Main house cable internet will come in with modum to a dlink router for both wired and wireless. desktop and a magic jack wired into router wireless for ipad and laptop. then run wire to workshop about 100' from house where a second magic jack and desktop will be set up (small biz out of workshop). I am pretty sure that the range of the router for wireless will reach to workshop fine for ipad but if not I will need to put a wireless up there tooext kids have a laptop running windows 7 but kids being kids and having had problems with self control on net in past I want to be able to make sure that I can turn them off from net when needed because
1. I do not want them running me past the data limits imposed by cable company and

I have a laptop running win xp. It was running fine this morning. I then brought it to a Honda dealer. The problem started there ...At first, I got a strong wi-fi signal but not network connection. I tried to repair (by right clicking on wireless network icon on the lower-right corner). The first time it seemed trying to do something but nothing worked. The 2nd time when I tried to run repair, the process hang and the machine could not be rebooted or shut off. I have to hold the power key for a few seconds to turn it off.Now, I am at home using another computer to post this message, which indicates my home lan and my router are working fine. View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm currently staying at a marriott in NYC and at night after work the wireless access becomes awful. As a work around I've plugged the ethernet into my apple airport express and launched my wireless network as usual.Things are all fine and dandy for the first hour or so of browsing or watching netflix. But then it seems to lock up and I lose connection. I haven't seen any caps on data transfer that would explain it but is there something else I should be looking at? The fact that it works (albeit for a limited time), is a good sign I think. I'm mostly using it for my ipad to watch netflix etc.
