Wifi Stops Working When Wired Network Plugged In?
Apr 22, 2012
On the basement level, and on level 2, I have in wall junction boxes where the Cat5E Ethernet wires come together. There are 6 lines that go from the level 2 box to 6 wall jacks on levels 2 and 3. There are also 6 lines that go from the basement box to 6 wall jacks in the basement and on level 1. There is also a Cat5E line running between the two boxes.I have wired all these plugs on both ends with T568B standard, and in each box they go into a patch panel. I have used a cable tester to test and make sure all these plugs are properly wired. I have also tested individual computers hardwired linked through to my router (without going through switches) and confirmed that they work that way, so I'm pretty sure I've wired it correctly.
At the second floor box, I have an AT&T 2Wire wifi router and modem, with AT&T Uverse service. I also have a monoprice Ethernet switch. In the basement box, I have another monoprice Ethernet switch (link to the type of switches I have is below). The switches are connected together via the Cat5E that runs between the boxes, and the second floor switch is connected to a free port on the back of the AT&T 2Wire Uverse wifi router. These wall plugs are not all currently used. In fact the problem I describe below occurs even if nothing is plugged into the wall plates. My problem is: when I hook up everything, so my wifi router is wired to the first switch, which is in turn wired to the 6 wall plugs upstairs as well as to the switch in the basement, and that basement switch is in turn wired to the 6 wall plates downstairs... at that point when I plug it in, my wifi stops working. Basically, whenever my router is plugged into this hard wired network, the wifi stops working. When I unplug the network, the wifi comes back (I usually reset it, not certain if it would come back just from waiting).
Interestingly, it doesn't necessarily stop working if most or all of the plugs are removed so the network is not connected (for example, if I just go through one plug instead of all of them)Does a network of wired Ethernet, even if not plugged into anything, cause some sort of a load or drain on the router that could make it stop working?

I had to move to a remote area in which I can only use a 3G mobile internet connection. The 3G connection is working fine, that is until I plug in my Asus RT-N12 router in order to create a wireless home network between our computers (for file and printer sharing).
For me it seems like firefox is trying to connect to internet trough the router. But that is not possible, since the router has no internet. The only internet is from the 3G mobile internet stick.
How can I tell firefox, that it should look for internet in the 3G connection instead of the router?

I have the same problems with the Cisco EPC3925?Everytime a wired pc reboots/boots everyone on the network losses internet, also wireless is disconnected. Also everyone get unidentified network and later its set to public network. We are using a Sitecom switch LN-120. I have to unplug this switch, then restart the router to fix the problem each time. Then I can plug it in again and everything is fine. The router will not restart (does not go further then 2nd blinking LED.) if I do not unplug the switch.

I have an EuroDOCSIS 3.0 cable modem from UPC Romania. It's a Cisco EPC3925, wireless modem.
My problem is that most of the time (like 80% of the time) when someone is starting or closing a PC that is connected using a wire, the whole internet crashes (wired PCs get a ! sign and the internet stops working and wireless PCs are getting disconnected completely from the network being unable to reconnect). This is solved by restarting the modem (unplugging/replugging it) or waiting for it to reconnect. I want to mention that during this process the modem lights show that everything is ok and nothing special happens.
First of all I called UPC technical support and the man there said that I should try to disable the firewall from the modem (which I had disabled already), if it won't work then to try to reset the modem to the factory settings (as I was thinking to do - because I configured the settings as I wished) and if this won't work then calling them back to change the modem.
I tried to reset to the factory settings and that didn't work at all after running tests over one week. After that I called UPC and they said that the modem is for sure the problem, they sent a technician (today) who also said that the modem is the problem. Ok ok, the technician replaced it and everything seemed to be good.
30 minutes ago my father started his PC and what should I see? Bam, internet crashing. 5 minutes ago i closed as well my PC and what should I see? The internet crashing again.

I've been having this problem with my laptop's wifi for a while now and it's been getting a little out of hand lately that I can't deal with it anymore. I asked some friends and they seem to have the same problem too but not nearly as often as I do. Every so often, my laptop's wifi just stops working so I turn it off and then turn it back on and it starts working again. My friend says it happens very rarely to him but for me just today it happened 2 times within 10 minutes

When my desktop is online via Ethernet, wi-fi stops working. A signal is detected, but is very unstable and often doesn't connect to the Internet at all, on any device. As soon as the desktop is no longer trying to access the Internet, all other wireless connections work without a problem. Base computer is Windows Vista Home Premium with all latest updates installed.Other connections include 2 laptops (one Win7, one PCLinuxOS), 2 Kindle Fire, Wii, iPod Touch, four cell phones, and Sony Media Player. They're never running all at once. But any number of them can run fine-- as long as the desktop isn't online at the time.

I've tried all sorts of settings, and I'm still holding out that its a setting possibly, but I have a E3500 and devices on both 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz... Most of them, probably when idle, seem to stop working over WIfi. They still have decent connection, but every internet related request just times out. Disable and reinable the wifi and it works great again.
Could this be defective wifi radios? or could it really be interference? I have it happening on multiple devices. Also, I'm not far away from the router when it occurs, and when I reconnect, it seems to work just fine for a while. Basically the big problem is on the cell phones and tablets because I'll miss notifications... I'll turn off the wifi and turn it back on when I use the device next, then a flood of notifications will come in. Again, it's not just a phone thing, tablets and laptops have the same problem, that's just the main reason I want it fixed.

We have a working home network with 4 pcs connected to the network. 3 via ethernet and 1 via wireless. Everything is working fine. Then we have 2 more laptops which are connecting via wireless. When either of those 2 laptops joins the network, the whole network stops working for a minute or 2. After that it starts working again for everybody (including those 2 laptops). However its super annoying when it does that all the time. (The laptop goes into sleep mode, when u turn it back on again the internet(and the whole network) stops working for awhile again..).

I am having quite a large problem with my TalkTalk connection. Whenever i turn off my computer, internet access stops for the entire network, anyone who is conencted, however, local access is still possible.I am also having a problem with the wireless in my laptop also. Whereas every computer on my network is able to access the router wirelessly, my computer (the one that seems to chut down internet access) won't do that, i send packets, but none are received.

We have 3 pcs connected to the router via cable and 2 more pcs connected through wireless. Everything works great. But when I try to connect (want to connect 2 more laptops via wireless) either one of the two laptops, the whole network stops working immediately. I have tried updating the drivers (they are up to date), removing the password from the router, gave the laptops static IPs (and all other pcs as well) with no results. As soon as one of the 2 laptops joins the network through wireless, it stops working for everybody. However if I connect them through the cable they work fine. One of the laptops uses win vista 64 bit, the other one win 7 64 bit. We have cisco RangePlus Wireless Router wrt110.

I just bought a new router - Medialink wireless-N Broadband Router model: MWN-WAPR150N I had my PC plugged into the router as a direct connection so I can use my Macbook Pro laptop wirelessly. At first, after resetting the modem (Motorola Surfboard model: SB5101), PC was connected properly as internet was working and same for Macbook Pro. However, the PC connection lasted only for a couple of minutes, more or less before it went "dead". I had it diagnosised and repaired but it wouldn't repair the problem. Each time I reset the modem and router, PC connection was fine but again, "dead" after a couple of minutes. Also, I noticed that after Macbook Pro goes to sleep, when it wakes up, it wouldn't connected either and I had to restart it to get it connected. Macbook is the only one that didn't go "dead" after few minutes, only after going to sleep and waking up.Btw, I did reset the router but no luck in resolving the connection for PC.

Can a wireless router be plugged into one of the ports on a wired router?I use a wired router and won't use wireless router because of security concerns. However, I am putting a PC in another part of my house. This PC will have limited types of usage - and security concerns will not be an issue for the type of use that machine will have.Running coax across the house will be difficult. My thought was to use a wireless setup for this one machine. But that would work only if I can plug a wireless Router it into a port on my wired router.
1) Can I plug a wireless router into a wired router?
2) If the answer is yes, will that compromise security on the wired ports because the wireless router is connected to it?
Router (wired) = Linksys BEFSR41; Router (wireless) would be "G"

Am I missing a trick how can I send files directly between the 2 devices?

I'm using two computers connected through a lynksys router(not connected to the internet) and ethernet cable, and one of the computers has a wireless card that connects to another router that is connected to the internet. i can set up a network between the two computers but then the one can't connect to the internet(even though it says it is connected the network with internet),

I connected my camera to my router with a network cable. It is a DCS-2121, H/W Ver A2, with firmware 1.04_FR.It received an IP address and I could access it fine with a web browser. Then I configured it to work wireless.I disconnected the cable but the camera wasn't accessible.Since I couldn't find it I re-attached it with a network cable, but this didn't work.So I pressed the Reset button to start over again. However, now I cannot get it to work anymore. When I plug in the camera and have it connected with a network cable to the router the status light remains RED.When I plug it in without a network cable the status led remains RED.When I connect it with a network cable to a computer directly, the status led remains RED.I've tried changing the network settings of my router to use 192.168.0.x as range, but it makes no difference. In all cases the status indicator remains RED.

Bought a Cisco RVL200 (latest firmware included - I checked), and I've set it up to serve as the gateway/firewall for my home network. I also intend to use the VPN functionality when travelling as well as serving up content from a web server behind it. All of this seems to work the way it is intended (after quite a bit of fiddling).
The problem however is that if it comes under any sort of load it simply stops responding - physically it looks alright with the expected leds being lit, just as it would when functioning normally. It does not display the management interface, nor does it even respond to ping (which it does when it works). If I start up a bittorrent client on any of the machines on the internal network and add a torrent to something popular like Ubuntu Linux it'll usually start downloading and then after 5-15 minutes the RVL200 will have stopped responding. Tried adding QOS settings to limit the computer running the client or downprioritize this type of traffic, but that does not seem to have any effect.

Every so ofter, the switch of the router just stops moving traffic between the LAN and to/from internet, though the WiFi keeps working and can still use internet.
I can still use the router's switch, and ping other computers on the local LAN, what happens is that the router stop routing wired traffic from/to internet, the rest of the issue is still the same, I opened reddit on my smartphone and there it was working via WiFi, but the would have none of it for the computers on wired LAN, not even accessing the router's page or telnet.
It is like some service or bridge between the switch LAN and the router itself dies... I'm still clueless.
The only "pattern" that I see is that my desktop is on line, because I can be not at home for 12+ HS and I can connect remotely to the server (rd p and trans droid) so I know it has internet access, but sometimes I think this happens when I turn on my desktop, like just now, this morning, but again, I feel is not every morning, trying to be more scientific about it I come here after every time it happens to record it, and also set the record straight about the issue description.
So, assuming it is not a hardware issue, because I did not had this problem in all 2011 and 2012, I do not overclock the router neither use other than default TX power level.
- How do I begin diagnosing this issue?
- If it is a known issue with this builds? I could no find it.
My goal is to be able to provide info for debugging the problem and possible finding a fix/workaround it. If it is indeed hardware failing, how do I even begin to diagnose it from that POV? The message is empty...
Even with the new build r21061 still happened two more times. Now the real problem to me, is that I cant even revert it to stock firmware, I tried even with:
- unplug router
- press and hold reset
- plug router
- keep pressing until power led blinks orange
- enter 192.168.0.1 (PC must have static IPA, i use 192.168.0.200)
Can't open 192.168.0.1 in FF nor chrome and does not even ping. [URL]. I just want to get it back to stock or do not hang up the switch-to-router(ing).

In the next month or so I plan to replace my old desktop PC. It is currently connected to a Linsys E3200 wireless router. I have many other wireless devices also running off the E3200, but my PC is the only wired device connected to it. When I replace the wired PC do I simply switch the new one in with the existing ethernet connection (I'm sure it is not that simple) or do I have to start over again recreating my entire network..security etc.. ? If so what is the process to start over ? Do I have to reset something on the router, reload cisco connect, create a new network name?

I just recently bought a new HP Envy m6 laptop that's not even close to a week old yet and I've run into problems with the wired connection. I have two different belkin ethernet cable cords to use and neither of them seem to be connecting whenever I plug them into the ethernet socket on my laptop. I've tried uninstalling the network adapters and updating the drivers. None of that seemed to have solved my problem so far.
Is there anything that I can do to solve this problem? I would be fine with the wireless connection that I'm currently using if it didn't fluctuate so horribly. I live in an apartment complex that provides internet access to me so I don't know what company they are using nor the router that is providing me with the wireless connection. I will be checking in with the management to see if it's not a problem with their internet tomorrow.
As for the network adapter itself, I have a Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter and a Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller. I'm assuming the Realtek adapter is the one that deals with wired connections. I'm currently running Windows 8 on the laptop.

I'm having is that every few hours my TCP/IP protocol stops working. The modem lights remain normal but I can't connect to anything. The only thing that works on the internet is traceroutes at the command prompt which function normally. The solution is that I have to reboot and then everything returns to normal until a few hours later when it happens again. There are no error messages on any of my browsers. The page just goes white immediately. When I try to retrieve my email, I get a message about the TCP/IP isn't working.
