Sharing Printer With XP And Vista?
Mar 9, 2012
I have a family member that is having trouble sharing their printer through the network. He has three computers on the network, two Vista laptops and a XP desktop. The printer is connected to the desktop and works fine on the desktop. The desktop is connected to the modem through a router. The problem is with the Vista laptop. He can not see the printer or even access the desktop at all. Both are part of the same work group. I have file and printer sharing allowed through the firewall. I have tried running the network setup wizard and that did not work. I installed the driver for the printer manually on the laptop and did not work. Everything that I know of related to sharing is turned on.What I find strange is Vista can not access XP but XP can access Vista.

I'm in the middle of restoring a Windows XP computer after a drive failure, and on the new system, the Turn On File and Printer Sharing setting has been forcing a reboot and always resets itself to Off after the restart.

I have a vista laptop connected to internet and a desktop running window XP. I want to make the laptop share its internet connection to the XP desktop but I haven't succeeded. The desktop has 3 Ethernet ports with one showing 3 computer connected together(same on the laptop except has 2 ports). I've tried connecting on all the ports but nothing happened. I googled a lot but the results I found always involved the XP having Internet but not the laptop. The computers cannnot even ping each other.
I did this before but both computer ran Windows XP, so I think it has to do with Vista.

0ave a WRT110 that provides the hub between an xp, vista and a windows 7 machine but I can't seem to find a way to share files between them.Mapping a network drive, making sure all permissions are set on all machines Es there something like a service that isn't started that isn't started? and is it not started on all systems. I'm going nuts trying to prepare for the up coming school season so that all my kids can get what they need from their individual bedrooms (no cheating that way).

I have my Windows 7 computer and my daughters computer with Windows Vista networked over a wired home LAN. For the most part, everything seems to work fine. I can access files on her computer, and she can access files from mine (photos, music, video, etc.). I set up a shortcut icons on her desktop for easy access to specific folders I am sharing on my computer. Unfortunately, when I share a folder on my computer, she is unable to view any files added after I initially shared it. So I routinely have to go in and share the folder again. It's not a huge issue, but it is annoying. The limitation seems to be one way, as I can access newly added files on her computer, without resharing.

I bought a gigabit NAS to replace my existing 100Mb NAS. After copying the data and users from the old box to the new (during which both NAS boxes worked fine) I renamed the old one to BACKUP and gave the new one the name of the old, FILE_SERVER.

XP desktop hard wired to router. XP and Vista laptops wireless. Vista has SP1 and both XPs are SP3. All computers can see each other. Vista can access the XP drives. The 2 XP computers can access each other. The 2 XP computers cannot access the VISTA. Access is denied. Firewalls are off on all computers. I have tried permissions on both sharing and security tabs with no luck.

My Vista can not open/view XP files, though XP can open/view Vista's.My Vista can ping my XP. My XP can ping my Vista. My XP can open/view files on my Vista. But when using my Vista, and I click on the XP computer showing in my Nwtwork to open my XP wireless laptop (Averatec) files, I get the error message (many have seen before):
I turned off all firewalls and all anti-virus software. All computers have the identical Workgroup name. a friend of mine has a USB printer (no WiFi and no Ethernet port) and is trying to use the printer from two different computers, without success. He turned to me for advice but I'm not really much use with networks. He's got the printer wired via the USB to his Windows 7 computer and that can print fine. But his Windows Vista computer shows the printer as offline no matter what he does. Both computers connect wirelessly to a router and have working internet connections. Both computers have the drivers and software installed (Epson RX520) and if he connects the Vista computer directly the printer via USB it works fine too. Both computers have fille and printer sharing activated. He just can't get it all networked together. He says it all used to network fine when he had his old desktop running XP but since replacing it with a Windows 7 system it will only work on one Computer or the other, not both.

Suddenly Can't access shared folders but others can . Laptop with Vista. Had many Mapped Network Drive issues about 2 months ago. Finally all resolved. Laptop was gone from our shop for about 2 weeks. Now it cannot see the Shared Folders (except for Public and Printers), and could not re-connect the Mapped Drives. Accesses Internet, can Ping the other PCs(all running Win7). Connect thru Wireless.
Why SUDDENLY, there are no shared folders visible on a Laptop?
Notes: This is the 2nd time this has happened. I changed alot of settings the first time. I re-checked all the settings this time.
Update: Magically works today 12-3-12. But what caused it? Why does Vista loose the ability to map network drives, when nothing
changes...I still want to know why for the next time this happens.

We have three desktops...2 Macs and a windows vista...my brother has a windows vista laptop, my mum has a Macbook laptop and for Christmas I got a windows 7 laptop! But that's not all that relevant because all I am really interested in is setting up file sharing between my old vista desktop and my new windows 7 laptop, so I can transfer my music, etc across. (I know that I could easily do this by other methods but I want filesharing set up for the future). Both computers are wirelessly connected to a Netgear router.Initially i tried fiddling around with various network settings and I've managed to get the two computers to recognise each other...and they can access the 'public' folder. I tried fiddling with advanced sharing to let them access other folders which appear as shared folders, but when i tried to access them from the other computer i was denied access.

I was just at a "customer's" house doing some virus removals and what not. After I was done he asked me if I would network his printer to his 3 pc's throughout the house. 2 of the computers worked fine with the printer, but the one laptop (HP dv9000 running Vista 64 bit) wouldn't print unless I restarted it. I could click print, the job would go to the print queue, but that's it. It'd just stay there until I shut down the laptop and restarted it. Soon as vista would boot back up the job would automatically go on through and start printing.

Small office setup with a wireless modem/router. We have two computers that are identical HP Pavilion a6807c PCs running Vista Home Premium. Other computers in the office are a bit older and run either XP or Vista.Just purchased a new HP Officejet 7000 printer and connected it via a USB to one of the HP Pavilion Vista computers (which I will refer to as HP1). The printer works fine on HP1 using the direct USB connection.Set printer sharing, file sharing, and even public sharing on both HP computers (HP1 and the other one I will refer to as HP2). Workgroup name is the same. Can access HP1 and see the HP printer on HP1 from other computers in the office. However, when I try to connect to the printer from HP2 to HP1, it locks up HP1 and HP1 requires a hard reset. I tried installing the software/drivers on HP2, but HP2 still tries to install the drivers from HP1.I am not sure its a problem with HP1 as much as it is a Vista issue. The reason I say this is because I have been able to successfully use an XP computer (XP3) to connect and print to the Officejet on HP1.

I am sharing a canon mf4350d printer installed on a vista home premium edition computer. I am trying to access it on an imac using osx 10.6.8. Below are the steps I have taken so far:
1. On vista machine in the control panel I have checked off the "share this printer" box in the printers properties.
2. In the registry of the Vista machine I have changed the value of lmcompatibilitylevel from 3 to 1 and then rebooted.
3. On the Imac in system preferences I opened "Print and Fax" and clicked "+" to add a printer.
4. I clicked on the "IP" button and set the "Protocol" to "Line Printer Daemon - LPD"; in the "Address" field I entered the IP address of the vista machine; In the "Print Using" I set to "Generic PCL Laser Printer".
When I try and print it can't connect to the printer and it does not print.

I have two complete and separate "networks", each with their own internet connections. One is for home use, one is for business use.
(1) Home network has a D-Link cable-modem/router to the ISP. Variable public IP address. NAT'd.This router is configured "as provided" by the ISP (except for a few port-forwards). DHCP serving is enabled, etc. If possible, I do not wish to change any major router settings.LAN IP Range: 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0
(2) Business network has a 2-Wire ADSL-modem/router to a different ISP. Static public IP address. NAT'd.DHCP serving is handled by a Windows 2003 Server. I am happy to change any router and server settings.LAN IP Range:192.168.254.0/255.255. 255.0
I have a network printer. It is currently connected to the Home Network (1) and has a static IP address 192.168.0.8, but I wish it to be accessible by PC's on both networks. My first thought is to simply connect both routers LAN-side via an ethernet cable. However, I can't find a way to add a LAN-LAN static route on the Business Network router (it only has options for WAN-LAN static routes). Do I really need to internetwork the routers via the internet?!?

i have access to a network printer and everything was working fine previously until last Monday. Now when issue a print command to the printer, the printout delays until i restart the machine before it comes out. If i issue another print command, i would have to go through the same process again. This is actually slowing my work rate and its really an inconvenience.whenever the issue happens, i ping the printers IP address to see if it is actually working. I also check in a browser to see if the printer is ready and all are positive but the problem still remains. Is there a way around this problem.

I have three machines that run dos5 and are unable to be networked (for various reasons). I am able to print the screen of each system but I want to share a printer amongst all of them. As it turns out they are on completely seperate sides of the room and a way to setup a seperate computer to act as a print server allowing me to do the following:
DOSBOX-->parallel port-->printserver(computer)-->ethernet port-->networked printe.
My goal is to move the printer to a different room too.
