Home Network :: Multiple Router Networking Versus Adding A Switch?

Apr 22, 2011

on my home network I currently only run an Airlink101 AR675W router. We have a couple issues with this. The router for one is in my basement and there are points in my house that have low signal strength, especially upstairs in the far corners of the home. Second is I am currently running my home PC as a media center but it is set-up wirlessly so streaming is clunky and jittery. Also on this network is 3 X-box's wired, a PS3 running wirless, 2 PC's wired in, 2 wirless laptops and the afore mentioned wirless PC. A lot of weight for the network. What I want to do is move the router upstairs, hardwire it into my wireless PC (the one doing the streaming) and connect a second router (an identical make and model I am buying this weekend) downstairs which will be basically used as an "expansion" of the wirless and a switch for the hardwired devices downstairs. would this be better than simply moving the wirless router upstairs (hardwiring my PC) and putting a 5 or 8 port switch in downstairs for the X-box's and 2 wired PC's there?

Cisco :: Adding Switch To NCS 1.1.0.58

May 14, 2012

I've added a number of switches to NCS and some of the switches had the wrong snmp communities, etc so weren't added as switches but instead were put under unknown devices.

I've corrected the information for each unknown device and am now seeing the following inventory status:1951799867 (IP: 10.243.26.22) will not have its features collected due to , device SPT_ONLY

They're still unknown devices and there seems to be no way to get them to show up as switches.I've tried to remove these devices but without success (despite a message appearing below the devices I tried to remove saying "Selected device(s) removed successfully.")

Adding A Wireless Access Point After A Switch?

Jan 7, 2012

I am staying with some family for the next two months and they don't have wireless internet at their house. When they bought their house it was wired for ethernet and have the modem going to a netgear 8 port switch which is going to the different rooms of the house. I would like to add a wireless access point to one of those 8 ports coming from the switch. I currently have a TP-LINK TLWR740N router that I can configure into an access point, or I can buy just and access point. Unfortunately it is not an option for me to plug the modem into the router and then the router into the switch.

Adding Wireless To Ethernet Switch Setup?

Oct 2, 2012

OK i'm re-organising my network setup, most of my devices in my room are hard wired through Ethernet but some devices in the house need to run wireless.Currently i am running a super hub that has been configured into just modem only and a wireless router that gives wireless and hard wires up to 4 devices. Im wanting something that can be mounted out the way like an Ethernet switch but give it wireless accessibility too. I see you can buy access points to connect to your Ethernet switch device but will it give ample wireless connectivity if im running 4+ hardwired devices?I have recently been upgraded from 30Mbps to 60Mbps, this is fed from cable connection to the modem.

Cisco :: Adding 2960S Switch To Network And Voip?

Apr 16, 2012

I have 6 cisco switches already on my network and I just got a 2960S PoE switch that I need to enable for VoIP. The voice vendor is coming in to setup our phone system for VoIP and I need to enable this new 2960S 48 port switch for the VoIP phones, I don't know how to do that, or other taskes needed for this project.

I was told that I need to uplink the new 2960S with the Catalysy 4507R using an ethernet cable and to "trunk the ports" and enable the 2960S as a VTP client - ok great - how?

I was told I also need to use the switch port voice VLAN command for the new VLAN - again, great - but how?

I actually was able to telnet into the switch and I gave it an IP and I created a new vlan but thats all. We are using non Cisco IP phones.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Adding 3750 Switch To Existing Stack?

Nov 23, 2011

I am looking to add a new 3750 Switcch to an existing stack shown below

Switch   Ports Model             SW Version             SW Image
------   ----- -----             ----------             ----------
*   1   26     WS-C3750-24P       12.2(35)SE5             C3750-IPBASE-M
     2   26     WS-C3750-24P       12.2(35)SE5             C3750-IPBASE-M
     3   26     WS-C3750-24P       12.2(35)SE5             C3750-IPBASE-M

[code]....

I have looked on notes to add a switch to an existing stack and haven’t identified answers on how the IOS will be affected on the new switch – will it downgrade to the current stack version or will the current stack upgrade to its version. At this moment in time I would prefer if the new switch IOS downgraded to the current stack IOS version. The new switch is a 3750V2 – will this affect how it joins the stack? The new switch has the image of IPBASEK9-M – again will this affect how it joins the stack?

What kind of configuration should I apply to the Gig switch before adding it to the stack?I am sure I will need to assign priority to the new switch, ideally, it will act as master.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3750G - Adding Additional Switch And Making It Stack

Feb 29, 2012

I currently have Cisco 3750G which is currently live and active and fully populated and only have remote access.

I have an additional same switch which I would like to stack. My initial plans were to have 2 GIbit etherchannels, but I came across the option to Stacks both switch with each other.

When I do a show switch on the live switch its set as a Member: [code]

I would like to add the new switch to the stack without losing the config for the switch which is live. I understand that the highest priority of the switches becomes the Master but as the live switch is Priority 1, would chancing this affect the switches config, or would it lose connection at all?

Also when I plug in the new switch and it reboot how do I ensure it becomes the slave without rebooting the live switch? The cables on the switch do they have to go to port1 on the live switch and port 1 on the new switch or can they be port 1 and port 2?

Adding A 2nd Router To DSL Line?

Dec 3, 2012

I currently have DSL and I have my router connected to the phone line in my home office and have 3 computers (2 business & 1 gaming) connected to the router via ethernet cable, works great. What I want to do is take the gaming computer to the game room in the basement and hook it up to the internet down there. Since it's a gaming computer I want to connect it to a router with ethernet cable for the fastest possible upload and download speeds (I do not want to use WiFi because I play flight sims and FPS and WiFi is too slow/laggy for online play).

1. Can I connect a second router into the phone/DSL line in the basement then hook up the gaming computer to the second router and get internet access like I have in the home office?

2. If I ran an ethernet cable from the home office router to a second router in the basement, would the long length of the ethernet cable adversely affect the connection speed (bit rate) of the second router? (would I get slower internet access in the basement?)

Adding A Wifi Router On Static Ip?

Dec 14, 2012

Here at work we have a Vigor Modem/Router hosting our connection to the world. It was originally on DHCP & the 4 computers & 2 printers found their own IP addresses without problem. We added a Linksys router via ethernet (to a lan port not the wan) in another area of the yard. This was fine also on DHCP and connecting wirelessly from a laptop or mobile phone was a doddle. Then our oh so wonderful IT geek decided to put the Vigor on a Static IP along with all the computers connected to it. This has some how cut off the wifi capability of the Linksys router now.It is basically acting as a hub for two laptops and nothing else.In simplistic terms with some detail what settings need changing on the Linksys if any?The Vigors internal IP is 192.168.1.1Linksys is 192.168.1.4both on subnet 255.255.255.0I have been advised to set the Linksys to a static IP on the Internet Connection option but what set of figures do i need for that??

Adding A WAP Along Side A Wireless Router?

Dec 28, 2012

She has comcast xfinity with a the SMCD3GNV router which if you ever look it up has the worst wireless signal imaginable and I can second that. I was hoping to not have to touch the SMCD3GNV router and just add on to it by attaching a secondary router as a wap. What I plan to do (which I am sure has been exasterbated in forums but just want clarity) was to disable DHCP on the new n router ( cheaper than official wap) and set ip out of SMCD3GNV router DHCP ip range but in same subnet mask so probably 192.168.1.2. Then connect the SMCD3GNV router to the new router via ethernet and dont use wan port. Is this basically all I have to do? Do I need to change the channels on either devices since their next to eachother? or will them being next to eachother and same channel cause interference? I have read I can call comcast and turn the smcd3gnv into a bridge ( plain modem) but I would rather avoid calling them and see if 2 wireless access points next to eachother is okay. Also, I plan on doing this by going to microcenter.com and getting a router for 24.99 or less with a coupon I have. Is there any on their website that you would recommend for this setup? Also if you could check the wap on their website and see if you think its worth it to get one of those instead if under that price as well. I want to utilize wireless n signal . Also, the xfinity service she has is rated for 50mbps download and cannot remember the upload , I have tested this wired and it does actually achieve this or greater.

Linksys Wireless Router :: WRT160N - Adding Second Router To LAN

Nov 10, 2011

I have 4 devices in my network -

1. Cable surfboard modem
2. WRT160N Wireless Router - 192.168.1.1
3. Linksys 10/100 5-port wired switch
4. WRT160Nv3 - 192.168.1.2

My current setup is -

1. Modem to first router. (WAN PORT)

2. LAN Port from router to UPLINK port on switch

The switch is upstairs, the router is downstairs.  The wifi from the router does not reach upstairs, so I have bought another WRT160Nv3.How do i add this to my setup?  I've tried hooking the new router direct to a PC and configuring it so that it is NOT a DHCP server and changed the IP from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.2 then connecting a LAN port from the switch to a LAN port on the new router and disconnecting the wired pc from the new router.

In the above setup NOTHING after the switch works.  I cannot get internet while the switch is connected to the second router on any computer attatched to the switch.  The wifi will not get internet either (from second router)
