Cabling / Cards :: Cisco Series 200 Smart Switch Not Communicating - DHCP Blocked

May 30, 2011

I have a small, simple small business network. There are 2 switches - an 8-port switch connected to my main Windows server (which is the DHCP provider for the network), and a 24-port switch which is plugged into the 8-port switch.

I replaced these switches (Dell unmanaged switches) with the Cisco 200 series smart switches (the 8-port and 26-port models). When I plug the 26-port switch into the 8-port switch, it is unable to get its DHCP address from the Windows server. Also, any device plugged into the 26-port switch cannot communicate with any other device, and all of the ethernet port lights flash at the same time at the same frequency - quite a light show!

If I plug the Windows server DIRECTLY into the 26-port switch it receives a DHCP address.

I have tried a 2nd Cisco 26-port swtich and it does the same thing, so I assume it is not a hardware issue.

Cabling / Cards :: One LAN Port Using A Static Ip And DHCP

Feb 22, 2012

I have my boss's (president of the company) laptop, wired LAN port, setup with a static ip so his laptop will bypass his company's web filter, and was going to let him use the wireless for home and travel. However, what if he needs to use his LAN port on a different network that doesn't support the ip's of our company's network? I need to see if there is a way, utility, or something that can be done to allow him to have a static ip assigned to that port and use DHCP (for when he is on other networks) so he can bypass the web filter.

I have a rule on the FW to allow his static ip to bypass the web filter. I have tried the alternate configuration inside XP and editing the registry to assign that nic dual ips, but I still get blocked on the filtered webpages. For now I have just emailed him the steps on how to switch it manually.

Cabling / Cards :: Way To Switch Connectors Over To Use For Internet Instead Of Phone

Jul 16, 2012

We put an addition onto our house about 7 years ago and ran Cat5 throughout it. Now when I talked to the electrician about how to route our internet through it, he said the Cat5 with RJ45 connectors was set-up for phone, not internet. I was looking around the house and could not find a rack or central location to plug a modem into. We have RJ11 ports in each of the wall sockets so I am slightly confused. Is there a way to switch these connectors over to use for internet instead of phone? How would I hook up my modem to these ethernet ports? My plan would be to hook up two wireless routers from these ethernet ports. This problem comes to be because our house is solid plaster walls covered with bookshelves and the router (a nice wireless-n) does not even penetrate half the house.

Cabling / Cards :: Switch To Interconnect Exterior Cable To Interior One

Jul 28, 2011

I am designing a cabling system to interconnect all the buildings in my school. In one of the building, I have 2 patch panels and switch to interconnect cables that comes into the building with cables that runs to the rooms. From what I understand, connectivity should be something like this:

1. Exterior cables coming in through the entry point.
2. Exterior cables terminates at the back of patch panel.
3. Patch cables run from the front of patch panel to a switch.
4. Patch cables run from the switch to another patch panel which connects the interior cabling that runs to the wall socket in each room.

My question:

1. Which ports should I use on the switch to interconnect exterior cable to the interior cable? They should be a connection between the exterior cabling and the interior cabling and both terminates in the same switch, but different ports. How do you allow communication to happen?

2. How do connect all the buildings to the router that connects to the internet?

Cabling / Cards :: Way To Find The WEP Key

Jun 27, 2011

My Internet is down. I appear to be getting power from the modem as all the lights are lit up. I have a wireless router. On my desktop I clicked on the Network icon and it said "3WIRE***" is in range but requires a Network Key (also called a WEP Key or WPA Key)? Could this be the problem? I've never had to enter a password to access my internet before. Do you know how I can find (or reset) my password? It's a D-Link router.

Cisco WAN :: 3560 - Switch Not Communicating With Load Balancing Router

Nov 18, 2011

I have a Cisco network on a ship where I work, I have an Ericsson GSM Access point which picks up local GSM 3G signal and broadcasts it onboard. I have two of these units and they are connected to a D-Link Load balancing router which is in turn connected to a Cisco 3560 Series 8 poe switch. Each unit is on a different subnet. The Cisco is on the DHCP server from my AD server (Windows 2003 Server) The Load balancing router has no DHCP and the Ericsson units have their own DHCP servers. On the Cisco switch if I plug in with a laptop I get an IP address for the DHCP on my server. I cannot ping the load balancing router from it. If I connect to the Load balancing router and set a static address for that subnet I can access the internet via the Ericsson units. And if I connect to the Ericsson I can access the Internet.

Cabling / Cards :: Connection Coming And Going?

Jul 6, 2012

I have network: 20 PC's conected to a switch (ordinary switch), from switch to a router (for DHCP and internet conection), Router is connected to a cable modem.

Lately an issue arised. One PC started having problem witch connection (PC is windows 7, up to date). PC instead of 192 addres is getting 169 (i need to highlight it is a problem with only one PC). That means the PC is connected to the Router but it is not getting proper IP addres. After changig the addres to static the connection ws fine for few days and then in networc connection icon (botom right) it came up with 'unidentified network' message. I changed the patchleeds, even changed the connection with known working line (from outlet to patchpanel) and the connection was coming and going. Then I changed network card with the same resoult. I noticed strange thing: While the IP is 169 or when 'unid net' when I unplug the cable from outlet then plug back and do so couple times in one moment the connection is back and stable but only for some period of time. Cables had been re terminated with new jacks and at the patch panel. Drivers for network card are up to date.

Why is the connection coming and going?

Cabling / Cards :: Patch Box Router To Be Used

Nov 3, 2011

I'm currently volunteering at a children's group near me. They've just moved offices and are wanting a computer network in place. I have quite a bit of experience with hardware and software troubleshooting, but anything past the server is beyond me.They have a telecommunications box, as many places do, and the box has a set of patch boxes that are, according to the telecommunications people, plugged in and good to go. Each office has tunnelling on the wall with network sockets, again the norm.

Cabling / Cards :: Make PC A Hotspot

I have found a great application that allows your PC to become a hotspot. It can also protect the wi-fi. Now remember whatever its your backend on the PC is what kind of network and speed you get such as, if my desktop connected through ethernet and I install the virtual router on the desktop than my laptop can connect to it depending on my Wi-Fi adapter on it. It could be B/G/N. B and G gives 54MBPS and N gives me 65MBPS.

Cabling / Cards :: PC Not Connecting To Internet

Oct 1, 2011

A few weeks ago, i noticed that my desktop was unable to access the internet, even though it shows that it is connected. i eventually decided taht it must have been a hardware issue, so i bought a new motherboard. after installing the motherboard, an a fresh installation on Windows, i saw after the drivers were installed that the same thing was happening. I pinged sites, and i got no losses on data. i also did a tracer, and it showed me that it is in fact connecting.

I noticed that when I connect the pc to the network(it is always via cable) it recognizes the network as "network", whereas if i use the same connection for my laptop, it brings up the network as "NETGEAR", which is, in fact, my network's name.

Cabling / Cards :: New PC Won't Connect To Internet

Dec 30, 2011

I can open files, play videos, run programs, etc. Windows installed without a problem. However, I can't connect to the Internet. At all. I can't even register my version of Windows because I can't contact Microsoft for verification, because the connection won't get through. No Internet devices can be detected. That was with a long cable wired directly to our router, which is next to our modem. So, today, I bought a D-Link Xtreme N Desktop PCI adapter to connect. Still no connection... I don't think the PC even detects the adapter, because the drivers coming with the adapter can't detect it, and the light on the adapter doesn't turn on.That shouldn't happen. Both the cable and adapter go directly into the motherboard. My operating system is Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit, and my motherboard is an Asus P8Z68-V PRO.My ISP is Cogeco. All other computers and wireless devices in the house work perfectly fine.

Cisco LAN :: 3750G - DHCP Blocked By VLAN

Jan 22, 2012

We have a server that we remove from the rack. The only role it has is to give out DHCP on the wireless network. I tried enabling  the built in DHCP server on  the Airespace 4112, though a Catalyst 3750G, but I dont get an address when I'm connected to the wireless network even though the range is enabled. If I set an static IP on my wireless card I can access the network. I also tried enabling DHCP on a Sonicwall that is connected to the Catalyst 3750G.

Do I need to link the DHCP scope to the wireless network? Is there anything on the switch that would be blocking DCHP since it on a VLAN? I have the last four ports in a VLAN for the AP's and the internet connection to the Sonciwall.
