Cisco Switches :: Series 200 Smart Switch Not Communicating - DHCP Blocked

May 29, 2011

I have a small, simple small business network.  There are 2 switches - an 8-port switch connected to my main Windows server (which is the DHCP provider for the network), and a 24-port switch which is plugged into the 8-port switch.

I replaced these switches (Dell unmanaged switches) with the Cisco 200 series smart switches (the 8-port and 26-port models).  When I plug the 26-port switch into the 8-port switch, it is unable to get its DHCP address from the Windows server.  Also, any device plugged into the 26-port switch cannot communicate with any other device, and all of the ethernet port lights flash at the same time at the same frequency - quite a light show!

If I plug the Windows server DIRECTLY into the 26-port switch it receives a DHCP address.

I have tried a 2nd Cisco 26-port swtich and it does the same thing, so I assume it is not a hardware issue.

Cisco Switches :: Dual Stacked Series 500 Switch?

May 10, 2012

I am about to buy 2x Series 500 switches but before that I have a design to be sure :I want to create a redondant network so it is the reason why I want to stack 2x Series 500 switches. Each server on my network (ESX and Windows 2008) are connected with two NIC (one port on the first switch , one port on the second switch), with trunk mode + etherchannel for LACP.

First question : I saw that the limitation is up to 8 etherchanel groups, can I have a mix of multiple servers on the same etherchannel group or should I create one etherchanel group for one server with only the two NIC inside?

Second question:I want to use the series 500 to do intervlan routing and want to be sure that if the the ports are in trunk mode with some vlan set on the card itself that the default gateway for the vlan will be propagated on the two switches (in stack mode) and will not cause any issues when both switchs works fine and if one switch crashes?

I've tried to do this through the GUI and can't seem to make it work. I'm missing something in the GUI.

Cisco Switches :: SA520 Lack Of HW Resources / ESW Series Switch

Jun 5, 2011

Updated formware of a partners ESW224  to the current GA code.I tried to add a ACL to a ESW switch.  The switch was connected to a SA520.

I setup a guest network on a AP541 and propogated that guest VAP VLAN  down through a ESW224 and down to a SA520.

On the SA520 I disabled IP routing between VLANs.  All worked OK.
Guest and corporate clients could get differeing IP addresses deopending on which VAP they connect to.

But the wireless  guests could still ping the management interface of the SA520.  This is a security violation for the partner.Tried to setup a ACL on a ESW224  to deny traffic from getting to the normal corporate vlan or 192.168.75.0.

But received a popup on the ESW when i tried to create a ACL.  It suggested there is a  lack HW resources.

I disabled ESW advanced QOS.Tried to add a ACL , but still have a error message saying lack of HW resources. Why do I get a message saying lack of HW resources ?

Cisco Switches :: DHCP Relay On A SGE2000 Switch?

Jun 25, 2012

DHCP Relay on a SGE2000 switch.I have configured two VLANs on the switch, VLAN2 (192.168.10.x/24) and VLAN3 (192.168.9.x/24). I have the switch in Layer 3 mode. I have configured the DHCP relay server of 192.168.10.4 and the DHCP Interfaces as VLAN3. All of the IP Static Routes were generated by the switch.

If I put a client computer on a port that is Untagged VLAN 3 and try to get a DHCP address from the server on an Untagged VLAN 2 port I never get a response back.I have done some packet captures and here is what I have found:

I see the DHCP broadcast on the client computerI see the DHCP Request on the DHCP server coming from the IP assiged to the switch on VLAN 3 (192.168.9.254)I see the DHCP server respond with a DHCP OfferThe DHCP offer never gets to the client computer I can't seem to get a DHCP address to any system not on the same VLAN as the DHCP server. Option 82 is disable and I did try enabling it, which made no difference.

Cisco Switches :: SGE2010 Switches / VLANs And A Blocked Port In Spanning-tree?

Aug 20, 2012

I have 2 switch groups.

2 SGE2010's with VLAN's defined as 10,20 and 30

Vlan 10 is the management VLAN, and it uplinks to our border router.Vlan 20 is the workstation VLAN, and all workstations point to the switch as their default GW? Vlan 30 is the ip phone VLAN, and all phones use this as their gateway.

I would like to put a LAG between said switches, we have some servers on the ip phone switch that need to be accessed by the workstation clients, and the single 100mb link through the router is probably not going to be enough. As I understand it, because the switches have different networks on them, a simple lag will not work. I did create a lag, and assign ip addresses to each side, however in that mode, it doesn't appear I can block vlan 10 from transiting the LAG, and with out that block I will end up with a logical loop, and spanning-tree will block one of the uplinks, or the LAG itself.

Cisco WAN :: 3560 - Switch Not Communicating With Load Balancing Router

Nov 18, 2011

I have a Cisco network on a ship where I work, I have an Ericsson GSM Access point which picks up local GSM 3G signal and broadcasts it onboard. I have two of these units and they are connected to a D-Link Load balancing router which is in turn connected to a Cisco 3560 Series 8 poe switch. Each unit is on a different subnet. The Cisco is on the DHCP server from my AD server (Windows 2003 Server) The Load balancing router has no DHCP and the Ericsson units have their own DHCP servers. On the Cisco switch if I plug in with a laptop I get an IP address for the DHCP on my server. I cannot ping the load balancing router from it. If I connect to the Load balancing router and set a static address for that subnet I can access the internet via the Ericsson units. And if I connect to the Ericsson I can access the Internet.

Cisco Switches :: Getting DHCP Relay To Function Properly On SG300-20 Switch

Dec 5, 2012

I am having some issues with getting DHCP Relay to fuction properly over our SG300-20 Switch.Out current layout is as follows. Hanging off the SG300-20 are a pair of Clustered Checkpoint Gateways with VLAN'ed interfaces in Both of our 2 VLANs, a 3COM 4200G In VLAN1 which has the DHCP server (And all the other Servers) connected to it, and a Pair of HP Procurve 2520's Stacked in VLAN 2 to provide PoE for our Phones/connectivity for our PCs.The problem is I cannot get the DHCP Relay to fuction from VLAN 1 to VLAN 2. If I assign an address in VLAN 2 manually to a device connected to the Procurves, everything works fine. I am able to reach both VLAN 1 and VLAN 2, but DHCP aquisition fails even if the device is connected directly to a port assigned to VLAN 2 on the SG300. The SG300 is running at Layer 3 currently also.

Here is a copy of the running config:

Cisco LAN :: 3750G - DHCP Blocked By VLAN

Jan 22, 2012

We have a server that we remove from the rack. The only role it has is to give out DHCP on the wireless network. I tried enabling  the built in DHCP server on  the Airespace 4112, though a Catalyst 3750G, but I dont get an address when I'm connected to the wireless network even though the range is enabled. If I set an static IP on my wireless card I can access the network. I also tried enabling DHCP on a Sonicwall that is connected to the Catalyst 3750G.

Do I need to link the DHCP scope to the wireless network? Is there anything on the switch that would be blocking DCHP since it on a VLAN? I have the last four ports in a VLAN for the AP's and the internet connection to the Sonciwall.

Cisco WAN :: Interface Netgear Smart Switch To 881 LAN Port

Dec 16, 2012

we have 100 Cisco 881 routers in our network and they all work fine to Linksys, 3Com, etc switches.  The problem we have encountered is interfacing to Netgear switches.  Netgear switches use autosensing on their ports and it does not seem to be compatible with MDIX autosensing on the Cisco 881 4 port LAN hub that is standard on the 881 router. Would a cross over cable resolve the problem?  Since both run autosensing MDIX they never synch - so likely a cross over would not do much.  I see this with all types of Netgear smartswitches.  If you put a small switch between the Netgear switch and the 881 Cisco router everything works fine except for getting port 9000 traffic through.

Routers / Switches :: Port Forwarded But Still Blocked?

Jan 23, 2011

I am trying to create a server in a game called Minecraft. I have forwarded port 25565 (which I put in the server settings for incoming connections and I checked that 10 times so that is ok) on my netgear wnd3700. I've opened the same port on my firewall in windows 7. I've disabled my firewall completely. Everything should be cool, but still, checking with canyouseeme.org and asking friends to join. It is still blocked. It simply doesn't work.. I checked my router for any firewall but couldnt see any.. So yeah I'm 100% I fixed it on the router, unless someone is gonna tell me that there is still an option in the router that might fix it.. but I think I did something wrong in the firewall..Although I have been trying to get this to work all day.. I'd rather get some advice on the firewall or other options in my router. Btw, I am using AVG free edition, and I am pretty sure there is no firewall in that version, but there might be something I have to disable in order for this to work ?

Management VLAN Frames Blocked By Switch?

Sep 10, 2012

I'm having some problems with a D-Link switch. I believe it's filtering the management VLAN frames, which is really strange. If you look at the graph, you can see that the D-Link is connected to three switches by trunk links. I'll just use the numbers set in red on the graph to explain what's going on, it's simpler to see.So when I'm connected either to switch 4 or switch 5 (or the others on 5's level) I can use the management VLAN (ID = 1) to connect to all switches above number 3 (including number 3) but I can't get to switches numbers 1 and 2.The only way to connect to those switches is to either connect directly to one of their ports attributed to VLAN 1 or by connecting directly to switch 3. So that's why I concluded that switch 3 filters VLAN 1 frames. It's not switch 4 cause I can get from 5 to 3. But at 3, the frames stop. Also, this only happens for VLAN 1. We have some VoIP phones connected to switches 1 and 2 and their frames can communicate anywhere in the network.

Does the Host file allow connections to your computer?Although I have placed some server names into the host file, Wallwatcher 5.0 is indicating that those servers have made connections. This didn't seem to be a problem before I took some online advice to add servers to my host file. I use iptables on a WNDR3700 router with DD-WRT firmware. In the iptable rules I've also blocked these servers. One example is cnbc7.net and a couple of U.S. Akamai servers.

After we made an IOS downgrade to a cisco 4507R from "cat4500e-ipbasek9-mz.122-54.SG.bin" to "cat4500e-entservicesk9-mz.122-53.SG2.bin" (comes with a redundancy supervisor blade WS-X45-SUP6L-E) the standby supervisor keep disable. We tried with the command "Switch(config)#boot system flash cat4500e-entservicesk9-mz.122-53.SG2.bin" then save configuration and "reload" comand but the switch runs with the "...54.SG.bin" IOS.

We erase the configuration with the command "erase/all non-default", before to apply the reload command insert the "entservicesk9-mz. 122- 53. SG2.bin" using the tftp command. The standby supervisory remains on disable state but the active supervisory runs with the desire IOS. In order to downgrade the IOS to the standby supervisory the active supervisore was removed temporarely (previously the switch was off) to make the standby as active, after that made the same procedure with command "erase/all non-default", "copy tftp://(....122-53.SG2.bin), and "reload" command.
