Cisco Switches :: Series 200 Smart Switch Not Communicating - DHCP Blocked

May 29, 2011

I have a small, simple small business network.  There are 2 switches - an 8-port switch connected to my main Windows server (which is the DHCP provider for the network), and a 24-port switch which is plugged into the 8-port switch.

I replaced these switches (Dell unmanaged switches) with the Cisco 200 series smart switches (the 8-port and 26-port models).  When I plug the 26-port switch into the 8-port switch, it is unable to get its DHCP address from the Windows server.  Also, any device plugged into the 26-port switch cannot communicate with any other device, and all of the ethernet port lights flash at the same time at the same frequency - quite a light show!

If I plug the Windows server DIRECTLY into the 26-port switch it receives a DHCP address.

I have tried a 2nd Cisco 26-port swtich and it does the same thing, so I assume it is not a hardware issue.

Cisco Switches :: Management HTTPS Session To SF200-24 Suddenly Timeout

May 6, 2013

what would be causing my management HTTPS session to a SF200-24 to suddenly timeout? I receive "The session has been timed out. You may log in again" few mins after logging into to switch.Sometime it happens within 45seconds, other times after 3mins, timouts are not consistent. And, i was not idle when it timed-out. My HTTPs idle time-out is set for 10mins.

I had a continuous PING going to managment IP, and it did not drop any pings when session timed-out.Interface stats are also clean. I tried IE, FireFox, Chrome and all are timming out.

I've changed the HTTP default idle-time out from 1 to 10 and my HTTPs stopped timing out. Management Access Authentication is cleary set for HTTPs, and the Idle-timeout for HTTPs was set for 10mins since install. Yet, adjusting the HTTP idle-timeout cleared the issue.

Cisco Switches :: SF200 Witches Will Simply Freeze / Blocking All Traffic Flow

Mar 18, 2013

We have been deploying Cisco SF200-24P switches for our systems for over a year now. They connect to a Cisco 881 router. In many cases we are also deploying Cisco AP541s.Over the last few months, on an intermittent basis, the switches will simply freeze, blocking all traffic flow. The power LED also goes dark. It appears the switch has frozen. The only thing that seems to revive the switch is a hard reboot by pulling the power cord. In the last couple of weeks, one site in particular has gone down a handful of times. That client of our is fed up. Our patience is running thin too.

I cannot see any indications in the logs to any event that might give a clue as to the problem. We definitely see this problem with the 1.2.7.76 firmware and the 1.2.9.44 (latest as of typing this). Not sure if with earlier 1.1.2 firmware.Without a fix, we likely will have to change switches and possibly vendors as we need a reliable switch.I see some vague references to a similar problem. And one reference to a SG300 series having what sounds like the same issue.

SG300-10MP / Fiber From Home Office Switch To Equipment Rack?

Nov 10, 2011

I just installed a 10 port Cisco SG300-10MP in my office, 9 of the ports are already in use. Connected to it are

PC
Laptop
Notebook
WIFI AP
B&W laser printer
Color inkjet printer
IP camera
Squeezebox SB3

Cat5e connection to basement HP 1810G-24 switch All of these devices are connected via a single Cat5e cable that was installed when the house was built. I had to re-terminate both ends of it when I moved in because the existing terminations were done very poorly. I have no idea how or where the cable is routed, nor what the quality of this Cat5e cable is. It did pass a test using my cable tester.

This single Cat5e is connected to my main HP switch in the basement equipment rack. Both of these switches have mini-GBIC ports that can utilize SFP transceivers and fiber. I priced out 2 MGBSX1 compatible modules along with a 30M multimode fiber patch 'cable' online at under $150. Although it would require at least a couple hours of work (including digging around in the attic and crawl space and drilling some holes), but running the fiber to the basement is very doable.

My question to my far more experienced forum members is if the performance gains would be worth the effort? My server is in the basement, and despite having an Intel GB NIC in my PC I am seeing read speeds of ~23MBs and writes of ~49MBs to/from my it. My server has teamed GB NICs (802.3ad LACP Layer 2) connected to trunked (LACP) ports on my HP switch.

HP ProCurve 2520 - Network Switch Replacement

May 1, 2013

we're running some HP ProCurve 2520's (24 port PoE for desktops/phones) and 2510's for our server racks. The CPU's are a bit weak from what we can tell and sometimes end up with issues on them. The specs on the EAS series look like a decent jump compared to the older HP's. However I've never worked with these ever.

My other option is to go back to Cisco. However to make it fit our budget, we have to dump gig switches for 10/100 + PoE. Which isn't really a major issue on the desktop switches. We'll naturally put gig versions on the server racks. I like our ProCurves, however they cause issues from time to time.

I've also considered going back to Adtran, however I haven't kept up with what they have to offer. I'm tempted to play it safe and go the Cisco route. We're using ASA5510's active/passive for routing/firewall (gig versions).

Cisco WAN :: Interface Netgear Smart Switch To 881 LAN Port

Dec 16, 2012

we have 100 Cisco 881 routers in our network and they all work fine to Linksys, 3Com, etc switches.  The problem we have encountered is interfacing to Netgear switches.  Netgear switches use autosensing on their ports and it does not seem to be compatible with MDIX autosensing on the Cisco 881 4 port LAN hub that is standard on the 881 router. Would a cross over cable resolve the problem?  Since both run autosensing MDIX they never synch - so likely a cross over would not do much.  I see this with all types of Netgear smartswitches.  If you put a small switch between the Netgear switch and the 881 Cisco router everything works fine except for getting port 9000 traffic through.

NETGEAR GS108E - Smart / Managed Switches That Allow Outbound From Mirror Port?

Nov 12, 2012

I'm searching for a managed switch that allows me to not only mirror a port/ports, but also to still use the destination port for the mirrors as a link to the internet/the rest of the network. Aside from this, I still need the VLAN functionality of good switches, and ideally PoE provided, too.

I have seen the majority of the features of this in the NETGEAR GS108E (http:url...), but this doesn't provide PoE to the ports and also requires Windows to log into.Is this a feature of many switches? I can think of many snooping applications where it would be incredibly useful.

Cisco Wireless :: 3502e APs - How To Mount Antenna

Mar 22, 2013

I am still new to wireless. I have been studing for my CCNA Wireless for about 6 months now so I still have a lot of questions.

Right now I have to deploy some new APs. We are using 3502e APs. I have a qustion on how to mount antennas for these access points. I have to make a mounting bracket the new installations. What was done with the previous APs was to mount a unistrut beam to an I beam in the building. There is 2 AIR-ANT-1728's and 2 AIR-ANT-5160V-R antennas mounted straight out on the unistrut. Then they put a T bracket on the unistrut and mounted a second bar 90 degrees from the main bar and connected the third 1728 and 5160 antennas on the second mounting bracket. So we have 4 antennas in a row, and two off to the side 90 degrees from the other 4 antennas.

My question, is this OK to have them this way, or would it be better to have all 6 antennas in a straight line when I fabricate my new AP brackets?

Here is a picture of what I am talking about. This would be looking at it from above.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: SG300-28P And SF200-24P Connected Via LAG Group / Configurations Won't Save

Dec 10, 2012

I have a SG300-28P and a SF200-24P connected via LAG Group.  SG300 routes.  I also have 2 VC240 IP Cameras.  They are connected on ports 18 and 19 on the SF300.  If I lose power, reboot or anything that makes the switches restart, the configuration is not saved.  I know this by the fact that after a reboot, ports 18 and 19 are placed in VLAN 4 Untagged.  If I put them back in VLAN 2 Untagged, save the configuration and reboot, they are placed back in VLAN 4 Untagged.

I read something on here about firmware the other night from my iPad so today, I upgraded both switches to the latest firmware, 1.2.7.76.  After the update, I could not access the IP Cams.  I went back into the configuration and they were in VLAN 4 Untagged.  I once again put them in VLAN 2 Untagged, saved the configuration and rebooted.  They went back to VLAN 4UP.

There was previous discussion also about xml version of files or something and that a factory reset and setting the switch up from scratch would take care of it.  I cannot do this, I am a seed corn salesman.  Is there a simpler way?  Like saving the config to TFTP and then uploading it after factory reset?  There is LLDP settings for my IP Phones too that if I lost them, I would have no idea how to regenerate them to make my switch work again.  Cisco tech support had issues with it when I first got them and they set it up via remote session so I am lost beyond this.  I just know that I cannot keep going into the switches to change settings and not have them saved.  I lose my security cameras and video recording.
