Cisco Switching/Routing :: C3750 - Data Center / IP Routing

Feb 21, 2013

I have a problem to solve in our data center, see attached drawing. HW: Our core switches consists of two stacked C3750 with ip routing. What I want to do is probably simple but I haven't been able to figure out the best method.

VLAN10 and VLAN20 should not be able to communicate with each other. (ACLs?)VLAN10 will have it's own default route/firewall. Both VLAN10 and VLAN20 should be able to send server backups to server in VLAN30. All 3 V LANs come in on a trunk from a pair of stacked C2960-S. I need it to be able to scale if we have 50 VLANs for instance, hopefully without long complicated ACLs. I've been considering VRF's, PBR but can't decide what's the simplest solution to this problem. I have never done this before so I would prefer to start off on the right foot.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: USB Console Cable For 3012 Blade Center Switch Module

I have 6 of these WS-CBS3012-IBM modules that need to be configured but I cannot access the USB console port. I was told I could just get any DB9- to- USB cable and that would work.  I did buy a DB9-to-USB cable and it did not work. I looked up the installation guide for this module and it just said the console cable is  DB9-to-USB but with no part number.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Configuring VPC On The Nexus 3048

May 22, 2013

I'm looking for some input on configuring vPC on the Nexus 3048.I know that it's supported to use 1G interfaces for the vPC Peer-Link, but using 2x1G for the Peer-Link would make the Peer-Link a bottle-neck if the 10G ports are used in a vPC. What about using 2x10G ports for the Peer-Link and using the remaining 10G ports in one, or potentially two vPCs. Should that work or is it in any way not recommended? The reason I'm asking is that the 10G ports are called "Uplink" ports in the data sheets for the 3048.

We are planning to connect some servers to the 3048s using vPC with each server connected by 4x1G interface (2x1G for each switch), and then we want to connect a Netapp storage system with two controllers using 2x10G each (the controllers are active/passive, so you can think of it as two separate systems). We would connect controller A with vPC 1x10G to each switch, and controller B in the same way with vPC 1x10G to each switch.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Nexus 3048 VPC Doesn't Form

Jun 11, 2012

I am building up vPC on 2 x Nexus 3048 and found that it did not work properly. The current config as follows,

1. OS: n3000-uk9.5.0.3.U2.2.bin

2. Peer link: 10 x 1G (E1/1 - E1/10) on both devices (I am wondering that 1G interface supports vPC Peer-Link. I heard that upgrading to U3.2 image will work for 1G rather than 10G... )

3. They can ping each other via management IPs

4. Edge switches vPC have not been built yet (I am focusing on Peer-Link and vPC role selection)

Cisco :: 6509 WLC Should Not Be Placed On Data Center Segment

Jul 2, 2011

We are in middle of deploying WiSM2s on our network, from a design point of view i am confused on where to position the WiSM2s. We have 2 DCs and from best practice architecture view WLC should not be placed on the Data Center segment, but it seems that is the only option i have.

DCs host 6509s, i am planning to host 1 WiSM in each DC, all clients will be on seperate subnet. Do you foresee any issues with this deployment or any security issues? authentications are followed as per cisco recommendation, clients authenticated against AD through ACS so it is fairly secure.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Co Location Rack Network With 3750

Mar 25, 2013

I  am considering running stacked 3750 L3 switches as  the edge of the  network, which will connect to the ISP. The ISP would  hand off two  lines with one to each switch and two lines to each client  zone. Does running HSRP, running  port channels, or running routing protocols seem like the  best option  for redundancy?

Lastly,  will the 3750 provide all the QoS I should  need for restricting each  client zone's bandwidth both up and down?  Could I get away with a lower  model and still get these features?

Cisco Security :: Mini Data Center Design For 6500

I have some doubts about the best solution for the design of a mini data center. In the data center there is a 6500 with FWSM module installed, there are some vlans created, all of them in the fwsm module. For example, a back end server to communicate with a server in the front end must always pass through the firewall. My question is, all these flows passing in the firewall does not degrade the speed of communication? What is the best practice, just pass the communications with the WAN in the firewall, and the vlan communication between front end and back end is only set up in 6500?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6509 - Nexus 7009 Rack Concerns

Mar 5, 2013

I wanted to know if any has the Nexus 7009 chassis installed into a 600 wide rack with the sides fitted and if they are experiencing heat issues?

My client will be replacing their aging 6509 chassis with 7009 devices, but the physicals dont tally with the install guidelines for the 7009 series chassis.  The current install of the 6509s does not tally with the recommended install guidelines for those either, but they have not expereienced any heat issues...

The 7009 will be fitted with 2xSUP2E, 3x48portSFP-F2E cards and 2x10GSFP-M2 cards with 2x6K PSUs.  I am genuinely concerned they may cook these devices, but space restrictions look like vetoing the upgrade to 800 wide racks.  Likewise moving to 7010 chassis may prove tricky due to existing other installs within the racks limiting vertical space.

SG300-10MP / Fiber From Home Office Switch To Equipment Rack?

Nov 10, 2011

I just installed a 10 port Cisco SG300-10MP in my office, 9 of the ports are already in use. Connected to it are

PC
Laptop
Notebook
WIFI AP
B&W laser printer
Color inkjet printer
IP camera
Squeezebox SB3

Cat5e connection to basement HP 1810G-24 switch All of these devices are connected via a single Cat5e cable that was installed when the house was built. I had to re-terminate both ends of it when I moved in because the existing terminations were done very poorly. I have no idea how or where the cable is routed, nor what the quality of this Cat5e cable is. It did pass a test using my cable tester.

This single Cat5e is connected to my main HP switch in the basement equipment rack. Both of these switches have mini-GBIC ports that can utilize SFP transceivers and fiber. I priced out 2 MGBSX1 compatible modules along with a 30M multimode fiber patch 'cable' online at under $150. Although it would require at least a couple hours of work (including digging around in the attic and crawl space and drilling some holes), but running the fiber to the basement is very doable.

My question to my far more experienced forum members is if the performance gains would be worth the effort? My server is in the basement, and despite having an Intel GB NIC in my PC I am seeing read speeds of ~23MBs and writes of ~49MBs to/from my it. My server has teamed GB NICs (802.3ad LACP Layer 2) connected to trunked (LACP) ports on my HP switch.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Can't Configure Data T1 On 1760 Router

Nov 18, 2012

For the past few days I've been attempting to configure a data T1 on a Cisco 1760, but I'm stuck at:

Serial0/0                  <our ip address>    YES NVRAM  up                    down

To provide a bit of background. This router used to be configured with a T1 via Frame-Relay; which worked fine. Now we recently change offices and providers, and the provider did not offer any information as to which encapsulation type to use, and if Frame-Relay which DLCI to use, etc.

Now I've been trying to setup the T1 connection and testing various settings such as encapsulation HDLC and PPP, but no luck. I also played around with the line codes and framing; which resulted in the following framing sf int down, line prot down, framing esf int up, line prot down. Regardless no luck.

Now I've been following several guides and examples mainly the following: [URL] In this guide they make mention of a WIC-1DSU-T1-V2, but as you can see in the show diag snippet at the bottom; we have a WIC-1DSU-T1 version 1.5. I dont' know if this poses a problem for us.

Throughout the entire process I've seen a few irregularities for example:

1. Router(config-if)#service-module t1 cablelength short 110ft
^
% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.

The IOS doesn't recognize any command with service module t1 ca , and the only recognized command with C is clock.

2. If I enter the following list of commands under the serial interface:

!
interface Serial0/0
ip address 10.0.0.51 255.0.0.0
service-module t1 framing esf
service-module t1 linecode b8zs
service-module t1 timeslots 1-12 speed 64

[code]...

And I do a sh run all I get is the following:

!
interface Serial0/0
ip address 10.0.0.51 255.0.0.0
load-interval 30
!

Although i can do a show service-module s0/0 I can see all of the configured parameters (see below)

Module type is T1/fractional
Hardware revision is 0.128, Software revision is 0.2,
Image checksum is 0x73D70058, Protocol revision is 0.1
Receiver has no alarms.
Framing is ESF, Line Code is B8ZS, Current clock source is line,
Fraction has 24 timeslots (64 Kbits/sec each), Net bandwidth is 1536 Kbits/sec.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3750-X Data Stack And StackPower Able

Nov 26, 2012

We recently purchased two 3750-X 48-port switches.  We are in the process of connecting the Data Stack and StackPower cables.  The question we have is what is the recommended Data Stack and Power Stack cable configuration if you only have two switches?  All of the documentation that we have seen is for three or more switches.

Data Stack: Our assumption is that we will go from Stack 1 on the top switch to Stack 2 on the bottom switch.  Do we need to then connect another cable from Stack 2 on the top switch to Stack 1 on the bottom switch?  We would think not, but figure we should check.  We plan on adding another three in the next budget year, which starts in May.

StackPower: Our assumption is that we will go from S-PWR on the top switch to S-PWR XPS on the bottom switch.  Do we need to then connect another cable from S-PWR XPS on the top switch to S-PWR  on the bottom switch?  We would think not, but figure we should check.
