Cisco Switches :: Dual Stacked Series 500 Switch?

May 10, 2012

I am about to buy 2x Series 500 switches but before that I have a design to be sure :I want to create a redondant network so it is the reason why I want to stack 2x Series 500 switches. Each server on my network (ESX and Windows 2008) are connected with two NIC (one port on the first switch , one port on the second switch), with trunk mode + etherchannel for LACP.

First question : I saw that the limitation is up to 8 etherchanel groups, can I have a mix of multiple servers on the same etherchannel group or should I create one etherchanel group for one server with only the two NIC inside?

Second question:I want to use the series 500 to do intervlan routing and want to be sure that if the the ports are in trunk mode with some vlan set on the card itself that the default gateway for the vlan will be propagated on the two switches (in stack mode) and will not cause any issues when both switchs works fine and if one switch crashes?

Cisco WAN :: 2811 Non-stacked Dual Switch Failover

Jun 6, 2012

I'm trying to see if I can use both ethernet ports on a 2811 to run hsrp for non-stacked dual switch fail over.  Then link the the NM-32A ports to L0, so the remote access server trying to use them can use the l0 ip and failover much faster (it's programming is limited).  This is on IOS 12.4(25)f, though we are moving to 15 soon.

Cisco Switches :: SG500 Stacked Switches Getting Errors?

Dec 16, 2012

We have 3 SG500-52 switches that are stacked and configured for layer 3 that replaced a couple of SG2010 switches a month ago. Switch units 1 and 2 are for servers and unit 3 for the workstations. The switches are connected with stacking SFP+ copper cables, 1 1M and 2 7M cables. The problems are occurring between the workstations and servers resulting in slow traffic on some links and connection failures. A repeatable failure occurs doing a backup from a PC on unit 3 to a server on unit 1 and 2 (2 port LAG). Moving the workstation to a port on unit 1 results in successful backups every time.

Initially I was able to confirm packet loss between my PC (on unit 3) and the servers using ping (ping -f -c 100000 -s 1460) of about .1%. The iperf program in udp mode also showed some packet loss and in tcp mode showed slow connections. A week ago I then upgraded the switches from v1.2.0.97 to v1.2.7.76 and rebooted. After that the ping and iperf tests show no problems although there are still slow connections to samba shares and the backups still consistently fail.

I suspect there is a problem with the stacking connections and have searched for traffic statistics on the stacking ports to look for errors but have not found anything. Doing a snmpwalk didn't reveal anything that I recognized. There are interface counters for all the ports except the stacking ports.

Cisco Switches :: Routing Between Two Vlans On An SG300 Series Switch

Oct 22, 2011

I've seen lots of posts from people having problems routing traffic between two vlans with some complicated examples.  Any simple step-by-step example for an SG300 switch (in layer 3 mode) to configure two vlans and sending traffic between the two vlans without an external router?

-VLAN1 10.10.10.0
-VLAN2 10.10.20.0

I've tried to do this through the GUI and can't seem to make it work. I'm missing something in the GUI.

Cisco Switches :: SA520 Lack Of HW Resources / ESW Series Switch

Jun 5, 2011

Updated formware of a partners ESW224  to the current GA code.I tried to add a ACL to a ESW switch.  The switch was connected to a SA520.

I setup a guest network on a AP541 and propogated that guest VAP VLAN  down through a ESW224 and down to a SA520.

On the SA520 I disabled IP routing between VLANs.  All worked OK.
Guest and corporate clients could get differeing IP addresses deopending on which VAP they connect to.

But the wireless  guests could still ping the management interface of the SA520.  This is a security violation for the partner.Tried to setup a ACL on a ESW224  to deny traffic from getting to the normal corporate vlan or 192.168.75.0.

But received a popup on the ESW when i tried to create a ACL.  It suggested there is a  lack HW resources.

I disabled ESW advanced QOS.Tried to add a ACL , but still have a error message saying lack of HW resources. Why do I get a message saying lack of HW resources ?

Cisco Switches :: Series 200 Smart Switch Not Communicating - DHCP Blocked

May 29, 2011

I have a small, simple small business network.  There are 2 switches - an 8-port switch connected to my main Windows server (which is the DHCP provider for the network), and a 24-port switch which is plugged into the 8-port switch.

I replaced these switches (Dell unmanaged switches) with the Cisco 200 series smart switches (the 8-port and 26-port models).  When I plug the 26-port switch into the 8-port switch, it is unable to get its DHCP address from the Windows server.  Also, any device plugged into the 26-port switch cannot communicate with any other device, and all of the ethernet port lights flash at the same time at the same frequency - quite a light show!

If I plug the Windows server DIRECTLY into the 26-port switch it receives a DHCP address.

I have tried a 2nd Cisco 26-port swtich and it does the same thing, so I assume it is not a hardware issue.

Cisco WAN :: 3750 / Licensing Upgrades For Stacked Switches?

Nov 15, 2011

I have a 4 member stack of 3750's. We would like to take advantage of wccp and we understand that we will need to upgrade our switch licensing from IPBase to IPServices. My question is do we need to pay for a license for each member in the stack or does one IPServices license upgrade cover the whole stack?

As per my Knowledge it is 4 and as below..

Switch 1 to Switch 2
Switch 2 to Switch 3
 Switch 3 to Switch 4
Switch 4 to Switch 1

If yes then, is it mandatory to do the "Switch 4 to Switch 1" stack. why am I asking this is because this stack requires a long cable and the cable which comes with the Switch is only 0.5M.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Running-configuration On Stacked Switches (C2960S)?

Apr 2, 2012

My company is beginning to have a lot of sites were we are stacking 3 to 4 C2960S-48 switche. This is making "show running-config" very very long because of the 4 x 48 interfaces.I can’t find a CLI command that show me the running-config of a ranges of interfaces. If I for example would like to see running-config for switch 3 (interfaces 3/0/1-52)The Show Running-config will show all the interfaces (for the two first swtiche = 104 interfaces), which take a time before I reach to switch 3.I miss a CLI command like: show Running-config switch 3, or module 3, or show running-config interface range x/x/x-x ?I’m well aware of the CLI command show running-config interface x/x/x, but this will only show me one interface.

Cisco Switches :: Multiple VLANs And Relaying DHCP On Two Stacked SGE2000-G5

Nov 17, 2011

We have been set the task of securing a small managed office system which is currently set up with a standard switch allowing each of the offices (containing different companies) to see each other, and in some cases, access each others documents across the network.

Obviously this is a far from adequate set up and our aim is to isolate each office using VLAN's but share a common internet connection provided by the managed offices.  We have two Cisco SGE2000-G5 layer 3 switches but we are new to Cisco equipment and VLAN's so we are not quite sure on how to implement this.  DHCP would need to be provided by a Router, there is no Server.  We are open to suggestions on the Router as we have yet to purchase one.

Although in the configuration I have both a console username and password and an enable password, when I try to log onto the initial switch that I entered the configuration on, I am prompted for a username and password, which works fine, but when I try to enter enable mode i get an error stating that no password has been set. However when logging onto the other switch I am not prompted for a username or password but when I try to enter enable mode I am prompted for a password and can access it with no problems.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 2800 Series - Dual ADSL Links?

Jan 31, 2012

In a site we currently have 1 BT provided ADSL link which is currently terminated using their device which I believe is some kind of 2wire device, which is extremely slow due to distance from the Exchange (4Mbps)...We have a growing number of users here and want to install a second ADSL line from BT to give them increased performance.

We have a Cisco 2800 sat not doing much so I was wondering if I could use this to load balance the link? I know BT do not support MPPP so therefore the maximum any user can get will be the speed of a single link (4Mbps)...But basically how can this be done..

Can I leave the two BT routers in place and place the Cisco 2800 behind them, or do I need to purchase two ADSL modules for the 2800 and terminate the connection there? Also once done, what do I need to do regarding actually setting up the load balancing? I have seen this:

[URL]

But am unsure as to how relevant it is? I am not sure I understand what the ACL's are being used for? I just want all users on the LAN to load balance out...

Also I am unsure of this statement:You potentially need to add policy-based routing for specific traffic to ensure that it always uses one ISP connection. Examples of traffic that require this behavior include IPSec VPN clients, VoIP handsets, and any other traffic that use only one of the ISP-connection options to prefer the same IP address, higher speed, or lower latency on the connection.I do not understand why a established session such as a VPN client, would ever traverse the second ISP connection anyway?

Cisco 300 Series Switch Internet / Intranet?

Dec 29, 2011

I just set up a new Cisco 300 Series Switch to replace an old switch on our network. We have probably 6 switches around our facility, all of them working fine (except for this one).

We have Windows SBS 2008. If I plug a PC directly into the switch that is NOT configured for SBS (in other words, it hasn't joined the domain) I have no problems accessing the internet. However if I connect PCs configured for SBS that have joined the domain to the switch, they can only access our intranet and not connect out to the internet.

The switch is currently configured for a static IP address and the client PCs are all dynamic.

Cisco Switches :: Dual SG 300-10 Mounting And Cascading?

Oct 31, 2011

SG 300-10 user manual states to not mount the switch on either side (I'm assuming this means the right or left ends as you face the front) and that they can be mounted either face-up or face down or flat). The specs further say that a 5" space must be "around all sides" of the unit. Silly question is what does "all sides of the unit' really mean? (of course given you must mount is somewhere). Also, given the little feet supplied with the unit, it is implicit to me the bottom needs to be only about 1/32" from the horizontal surface it is placed on. If this is true, can this unit be mounted face down on a shelf such as the Leviton 47612-UBK (it's allowing the mounted units to have airflow between the unit and the cabinet back) and have a second SG 300-10 mounted in front of the first that is seperated from the first by either the dual feet or use separation spacers that will fill the available shelf space and maximize the distance between the units - all without degrading the inherent reliability of either?

Lastly, The two SG 300-10's are reaching the internet through a LINKSYS E4200 router. Is it better to have each SG 300-10 occupying its own dedicated port on the router OR to cascade one SG 300-10 to the other SG 300-10 then one of the LINKSYS E4200 router? If the answer is each occupying their own dedicated LINKSYS port, then would it be prudent to load one SG 300-10 with the most active ethernet lines to allow the other SG 300's port power management to shut it down?
