Cisco Linksys Model WRT160N V2 - Sporadic Internet Connectivity?
Feb 19, 2011
Here's my situation.I had an 8 year old desktop computer that I just replaced with a brand new one (Lenovo). Prior to replacing it, I assumed the slowness and occasional inability to connect to the internet were caused by the computer being so old. But once I replaced the computer I still had problems - in fact it was worse.
At that point I was reminded that the modem was also 8 years old so I had the cable company replace it (Scientific Atlantic Model DPC2203C). The connection improved for a few days but then it went right back to how it was.
I have a wireless router (Cisco Linksys Model WRT160N V2), which is hooked up properly. When I got the new modem I had to reset the router. My wife's laptop now sometimes has connection problems which it never had before, and on my (work) laptop I can access the wireless connection but not through the same entryway that I had before. I'm providing this information because I think it may be relevant. It seems like something has to be up with the wireless router since I reset it. Another thought is that possibly the problem is with one of the wires between the router and either the modem or the computer - not sure if the sporadic connection problems is an indicator of that.

Ive been running my computer on our home wireless internet connection with almost no problems, but about two weeks ago our internet went down and after it went back up a day later i had very slow internet speed and a very sporadic connectivity (random disconnects, dns timeouts etc) I used to get speeds up to 20-22 mbps but now i can barely push 4mbps, the other computers on our network has fine connectivity its only my stationary computer that has these issues

My daughters Studio 17 laptop lost all internet connectivity. Wired and Wireless. I have been searching all kinds of threads but don't seem to find a solution to this issue. I have done two systems recoveries to earlier dates when we know it was working to no avail. I have 3 other computers on this network and none are experiencing any issues. I did just change from DSL to cable broadband, but the computer was fine until Monday night. Not sure what is going on. Does a system recovery will undo Windows updates? The most recent updates took place on 1/4/2012, which is about the time the problem showed up. I am going to uninstall those updates, 2 Security Update for Windows, and see what happens. Stand by. No good. It didn't work. I see a lot of people who are having the same problem here recently so something must have changed.

We have about 20 of the above WAPs in our company network and are quite satisfied with the performance. However occasionally we need to manually reboot the WAPs in order to resolve sporadic connectivity issues that cannot be resolved on the client devices. In order to optimize the performance we would like to automatically restart our WAPs at a certain time (e.g. at night) on a daily or weekly basis. We are currently using WAP4410N-fw-2.0.0.5-K9.

I am experiencing - loosing network connectivity entirely (between the router and the cable modem) or loosing connection to some clients: 2 wireless laptops - one N and one G, and 4 wired connections. This requires a reboot of the router 2-3 times a day. Never experienced any of these problems with a Linksys WRT54G, a unit that this one replaced. Unless I can resolve it, the WRT54G is going back in, and WRT160N is going back.

I updated the fimware on my WRT160N v3 and followed it up with a reset of the router. I then restored the router settings that I had saved. All the settings appeared to be good, but none of my wireless devices would connect. I reneted the pass phrases (WPA2) but still nothing. Tried to change the passphrase, still no good. I then did a factory reset of the router from the setiings page and manually re-entered and save the settings, again nothing. All of my devices are able to "see" the network and the correct SSID.

I just bought a linksys 4200v2 router and I still get disconnects every so often.... usually disconnects for about 30 secs then comes back online. When it disconnects, it disconnects all devices on the wireless network router... laptops, iphones, etc..I have tried adjusting some settings in the router but I simply don't know enough to know what I'm doing
Network mode: Mixed (same as 5ghz)
SSID: different from 5ghz
Security Mode: WPA2/ WPA Mixed Mode (same as 5ghz)
Channel Width: 20 mhz only (40 for 5ghz)
Channel: 1 (auto for 5ghz)
SSID Broadcast: yes (same for 5ghz)
How can I stop being disconnected from the internet? I have inssider and I checked to see what channel my neighbors are using and all of them are using 6 or 11 so I decided to use channel 1 for 2.4 ghz.I have a ~3000 sq ft home with 3 levels (basement, first, second). We do some work in the basement and second floor... most is done on the first.

I just did a fresh Windows XP install on my desktop. I've been trying the past couple of days to get it to connect and it has randomly connected online sometimes but most of the time it won't connect. The times it has connected to the internet it has been fine, but then it will disconnect and won't reconnect.

I have a office that was converted from a older townhouse. The building has 3 floors with the distant of each floor expands no more than about 60 - 75 feet from end to end of the building. Not sure what's in the walls as the building is at least 20-25 years old. Total number of users is about 20 - 25.
Here is the problem..
I have a WRT54G wireless router setup to provide wireless coverage for this office, located on the 2nd floor, For some reason, about 10 - 15 feet from the opposite end of the building, the signal drops off big time. Regardless of the floor. So to assist with the signal, I installed a wireless 300N Gain extender on the same floor on the opposite end of the building where the signal was weak. At first, it seemed to work by boosting the signal, but then it seems to show the same issue as before.. sporatic signal loss, signal fluctuation, etc.
My question is should I replace the wireless booster with multiple wireless APs located throughout each floor... maybe 1 per floor? If so, is there a trick to configuring all 3 APs to have the same SSID and same encryptionsso it will be seamless to the users? Since the first AP works fine, I wanted to get 2 additional WRT54G units.

None of the 4 wired ports on the back of the WRT160N router give me wired internet. The only way I can get internet is to connect the wire to my internet modem

specs: linksys router wrt160n v3, verizon modem gt701c, windows xp service pack 3, verizon DSL, southern california.I have been able to connect to the internet directly through the modem only...but i need my wireless back working. I've reset my router a few times recently trying things i've read on forums from people with similar problems. The most recent thing i did was RESET the router -> connected modem/router/computer properly -> turned them all back on in the proper order -> check to see if websites would open. They didn't so i tried doing this, which was suggested...i plugged the router into the computer and enabled MAC address and then pressed the Clone MAC address button and saved....then I tturned everything off again and rebooted everything again in the proper order and still couldn't load any web pages. Here are my IPCONFIG/ALL read outs for both when i'm hooked up with the router & modem (which isnt working) and directly to the modem (which is working) this is the one with the router & modem:
C:Documents and SettingsOwner>ipconfig/all
Windows IP Configuration
Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : shakas
Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown
[code]....
My modem and wireless were working fine for years...and then recently without me doing anything my modem kept dropping connection and the internet and dsl lights kept flashing and then going back solid....so i'd be connected for a few minutes and then they'd start flashing again over and over all the time. I finally called verizon and then had me fiddle around with stuff...followed all their directions...but ended up only being able to connect while directly connected to the modem. Even then, the modem was still losing connection and getting it back. (i was supposed to schedule a house call for a tech to check it out, never did) Over a couple weeks the connection ended up getting better on its own, so now it pretty much never drops out anymore. (almost) i've reset my modem, i've reset my router....i just still cant seem to get websites working with my modem and wireless router connected.

I recently changed the security mode on my router from WEP to WPA2 Personal. However, since that change, I've noticed that the wireless devices, 2-laptops, are intermittently loosing their connections. . I don't know if it has anything to do with the security mode change, but I don't want to go back to WEP for obvious reasons.

I've recently purchased a WRT160N router, and I'm using it in conjunction with a WMP54G wireless PCI card. I've set the router up to my requirements, and can get a stable wireless connection.. but internet speed seems excessively slow. While I'm able to get up to around 4MB/s transferring files over the network, running speed tests, it consecutively shows my download speed to sit around 400KB/s, whereas I'm able to get a steady 1.1MB/s on another desktop that is wired. Disabling the LAN adapter on that computer, and connecting via wireless, brings down the speed that that computer is able to get to around 400KB/s as well. Hence, I don't think it's my wireless cards, but something to do with the router itself.I'm also experiencing lag spike issues in online games, which I can only attribute to the current wireless setup, because I've previously had no issues with it. All relevant ports are forwarded, so that is not an issue. After doing some Googling on the subject, someone had suggested running SpeedGuide's TCP Optimizer, and changing the RWIN - I ran it, and set it to the 'optimal' settings, and after a reboot the wireless seemed fine - I was getting just a tad under what I should (about 950KB/s).. but after a short while, it just went back to 400KB/s. After further investigation, it seems that Vista automatically changes that RWIN value to optimize network traffic.. but I never had this issue with my old wireless gear, so I can only assume that the way Vista is reacting is based on the way the router is interacting with it.

I had an old MS DSL1000 that was upgraded by Qwest to an Actiontec GT701 (not wireless) modem. If the GT701 is plugged directly into the PC, the internet works fine. If it is connected from the ethernet port into the WRT160N router, the LAN works but not the internet, even though the internet light is a solid green on the GT701. I've read about port forwarding and DMZ, but still not positive if I should do one or the other, much less on how to go about setting either of them up correctly.

I have a Wrt160n router and a Motorola sb120 modem (provided by comcast after my original modem got fried by lightning, no I didn't have my router hooked up when that happened), I have been having trouble trying to get the modem to send the internet signal to my router. I have tried mac address clone that was suggested on this forum for someone with a different router but still no internet to my computer, its all hooked up through Ethernet cables, the computer I have it hooked up with a hard line is running windows seven. When I plug the modem straight to the computer it works and I have internet but when I hook up the router between them it has no internet.

i bought a WRT160N router
I connected the Router to the modem, and all the wired connected PCs were working perfectly. But then, i went to the setup page to configure the Wireless settings, and as soon I changed the SSID name, the connection internet connection droppedThe only way i had to fix this was by making a Hard Reset.after that, I also tryed changing values and settings from all the configuration tabs, and the wired connection was working properly, but as soon i changed any value from the Wireless tab, the internet connection dropped (even, in the diagnostics section, i could not do a ping to google. It says unknown host).

I have a 3750 acting as the DSW, with a few 2960's (asw's) attached to it going to different buildings.
One building has been complaining of random 15 second to 1 minute outages. Its rare though. Happens anywhere from once per week to maybe 4 times per week. The times of the day it happens is random also.
I've had them ping the gateway when it happens, and the ping fails for a few seconds then starts to work.
One of them ran a continuous packet sniff, and sent it to me after it happened. Nothing weird going on in the sniff, except for the obvious failure of getting traffic. When it happens I see a crap ton of arp requests to the gateway, which makes sense I suppose since the hosts can't get past the gateway anymore.
They've replaced the fiber to LIU, the sfp, and then even the 2960. Its updated to latest code.
I'm guessing the problem is at the 3750. We havent touched it yet. CPU/memory looks fine (when checking the history). No input/output errors on any interface. Logs don't show anything, not even a flapping interface. But we are always looking at this after the fact, since by the time they email or call us, it has already passed...
Other buildings that are fed from this 3750 haven't complained though, so I'm not sure if they are experiencing problems or not.

My house was in the middle of a lightning storm today while I was out and I came back to no internet. Figgured it was just the phone lines down, but connectiong directly to the modem I found I had connectivity. The WRT54GL (flashed with DD-WRT) doesn't pick up the WAN IP, I've checked with multiple ethernet cables, 2 different modems (all of which work fine with our computers, providing connectivity) and am currently using the router that the WRT54GL displaced ~8 years ago. I'm assuming it's just dead, but wanted a second opinion... kinda odd that a surge would have come through the phone line, through a DSL modem and killed the WAN port of the router instead of taking out the modem?

Recently I upgraded the wireless infrastructure in my campus and deployed WISM2 controllers and Cisco 3502i APs throughout the campus. Until now all my users were using 802.11b/g/a speeds without any issues. However, now I am trying to enable 802.11n speeds in a test group of users by enabling AES encryption and I am seeing lot of issues. These test users sporadically loose wifi connection and an asterix appears in the WIFI icon in the task bar. Interesting part is that all the manually configured wireless networks in the laptop stop displaying. The broadcasted SSIDs continue to show up though. All these users are using "Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6200 AGN" wireless cards with driver version 13.3.0.24. I had upgraded one of the client drivers to the latest 15.1 version. However, he still complained about wireless disconnection (I am not sure about this problem as I didnt personally attend his laptop to know the cause of diconnect).
One another interesting incident is that 2 people from this test group were having a meeting in a conference room once and surprisingly both dropped at the same time with the same symptoms. The only fix was to reboot their PCs.
I have done following changes in my controllers hoping that the problem would get fixed, But still no luck.
1. Enabled client band select.
2. Checked EDRRM for A as well as B/G
3. Changed Channel allocation from freeze to auto.
4. Enabled "avoid persistent interferers".
In my calls with Cisco support we also ran debugs in the controller and sniffer captures in the client machine. All we see in the controller is that the client dropped without any reasons. Also, didnt find anything significant in the sniffer captures. At this point not sure what to do. If upgrading the client driver is an option, then I need to produce some proof or document to the management which says the current 13.3.0.24 has known bugs to run 802.11n speeds. Scanned the entire internet, put a post in intel support site but no luck.

I have an EA4500 router. It's the latest in a long line of Linksys routers I've owned and I'm pretty familiar with setting one up and making changes. But the EA4500 seems a bit more picky than previous routers. Last night I tried to enable port forwarding for ports 53, 80, and 88 for my xbox. I already had port 3074 forwarded. When I did that and applied the change, I lost all Internet connectivity. I tried cycling the power on the router with no luck. I finally got connected again by going to 192.168.1.1 and disabled those ports. The status page then said I had Internet connectivity but I really didn't at least right away. It took a couple minutes before I was actually able to to connect to the Internet again. What else should I check when it says I don't have internet connectivity?

We have a home use WRT160N router linked to a PC desktop and two wireless laptops, Yesterday bought a new I-Phone, but could not link to my network (entered the security key many times). I accidentally connected to computer fix it firm that linked to my PC and wanted a large sum to fix the problem which he said was due to large number of temp?? internet files and once removed he would change the IP address of the desktop computer? Is this diagnosis logical and can I do it on my own. The router is definetely working - both laptops access the internet and I was recently able to hook up a Samsung Blu-Ray player using the same security code I used for the I-Phone.

The issue is that one Dell laptop is experiencing slow or no internet connectivity at all using wireless. Sometimes 1 to 2 minutes to load a page, other times the dreaded 'not able to display webpage' message. It's fine using Ethernet. I have another laptop (same exact brand/model) and it has no problems. I also have a Macbook Pro and other Apple IOS devices (iPod/iPads) that are fine. Several Ethernet connected devices are fine as well. The laptop in question had no issues with my previoius Linksys devices, which are a BEFSR41/WAP55AG as well as a WRT-54GS v2. This one laptop was fine the first day or two on the EA4500 but something happened which is causing this issue. I had to add the WAP55AG back onto my network so my son is happy again, but my plan was to decommission the other devices.
