Cisco :: PVST+ And STP - Use These Together?
May 29, 2012i have a 3560 cisco switch that supports PVST+ and another switch wich supports just STP, can i use these together? if yes, is there any special configuration ?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6509 - Changing From PVST To Rapid-PVST
Dec 15, 2011As a part of a major network cleanup/standardization project I have been working on for several weeks, I am now looking at spanning-tree and trying to get my company into line with Cisco Best Practice. I currently have 3 switches in the data center that are spanning-tree root for different vlans. Before I changing vlan priorities in spanning-tree, I feel that I should change from PVST that everything is on now to Rapid-PVST. To minimize the momentary network disruptions from making the change, should I do the edge switches first and do the switches in the data center at the last ?
Related to this process is something that I want to do probably after the PVST to Rapid-PVST change. I am going to manually set the vlan priorities for each vlan on the main core switch. Assuming I set the vlan priority for each vlan on my main core switch (6509) to 4096, should I set the switch I want to be the backup to 8192 for each vlan and then set the edge switches to something like 12288 to keep them from getting up in the spanning-tree hierarchy and for general principle to leave nothing to chance ?

Jan 23, 2013Currently I'm with a pure Cisco shop, running every LAN Switched infrastructure (even in the HQ datacenter) with PVST+, I'm noticing in the documentation I've read and labs I've created that RSTP is... great, and I've observed that even the uplinkfast functionality seems to be build in by just enabling rapid-pvst. Of course I'll propose a migration plan, document the network, diagram it entirely and provide effective steps to implement the change, but that's assumed from any get'go.

Mar 14, 2013I have an alcatel 6850 switch connected to a 3750. Two connections (cables) are used between the switches. The two connections from the alcatel are in different vlans 10 and 60 , but the cisco ones are in the same vlan ie 1 (I know not best practice but keep with it ). The cisco cables are connected into port 1 and 4. Port 1 is forwarding and 4 is blocking. The 3750 is configured with basic default pvst configuration.The alcatel is the root bridge. As can be realised traffic from alcatel on vlan 10 cannot pass traffic to the 3750, This was established by the spt seeing the same mac from the root bridge therefore blocking port 4.To stop this from blocking in this scenario I was going to use bpdufilter.

Jan 18, 2012We have two L3 3750 switches running HSRP and routing for various Vlans on our corporate network. Rapid PVST is running across our entire WAN. We are introducing a third party solution for remote communications over MPLS. When interconnecting this equipment to our core network, we have experienced less than desirable failover times of 32 seconds and recovery times of 60 seconds. The vendors engineers are telling is that the interoperability between IEEE spanning tree and Rapid PVST is the culprit.
They are suggesting two scenarios - either converting our corporate network to MST (which I prefer not to do but provides us the fastest fail/recovery times) or adjust the timers on our Rapid PVST forwarding timer to 4 seconds. What would the implications be to change these timers on our network, and if I choose to do this, do I only do it at the core (on the two devices that would become root bridge)? I have been doing some reading that says to not mess with the timers, but nowhere do I see reasons why.
Cisco Switching/Routing :: STP Stops Loops But R-PVST Goes Flapping 2960
Feb 22, 2012Stange problem which I encountered today, I have a Cisco 2960 which is connected to a netgear. The switch started showing itself in CDP and was running STP. I checked the cables physically today and noted 3 uplinks to the netgear, all port on the Cisco active and forwarding and green lights.
The Cisco was running STP, I changed it to R-PVST and the lights on the Cisco went crazy and I got the message port flapping on the switch but the switch did not block any ports (all ports on same vlan).
There after I changed it back to stp and the switch blocked the other up links apart from one.
Sure R-PVST is far superior than STP?

Apr 1, 2013I have two locations DC and Corp connected to each other via Point to Point Circuit. I have forced the two core switches setup as GLBP pair to be primary and secondary for certain VLAN's including VLAN1.I have a switch in our Corporate office 3750 which is where the point to point circuit terminates. VLAN1 SVI is manually shut on that switch. Also the priority on VLAN1 is increased manually like this, "spanning-tree vlan 1 priority 28672".
Now the issue is that the Primarey Root Bridge in the DC is the root bridge for VLAN 1. But this other switch 3750 in our corporate office also is a root bridge for VLAN1. [code]

The initial authentication succeeds fine and the wireless connection works ok using WPA2+CCKM and LEAP with a Cisco ACS radius server.The problem is that the client does not attempt to preauthenticate with the other AP because the RSN Capabilities IE in the AP beacons and probe responses do not set the RSN Preauthentication capable bit. I can't figure out what it takes to get the APs to indicate to clients that it can do preauthentication. I'm been crawling through all the documentation I can find, to no avail.

Mar 10, 2011I currently use a device called the Access Enforcer which runs OpenBSD. I have 3 stable, working VPN tunnel's where the other side's device is a Cisco ASA 5520 or 5540. I was setting up my 4th VPN where the other side used a Cisco ASA 5520 and ran into issue's. The Cisco side can bring up the tunnel. Once the tunnel is up each side can talk to the other side. However, when the tunnel is dropped, the OpenBSD side cannot bring up the tunnel. The error received is on the OpenBSD device is "isakmpd[29581]: transport_send_messages: giving up on exchange from-XX.X.X.0/24-to-XX.XXX.XXX.240, no response from peer XX.XX.XXX.141:4500". I have been trying to figure this out for weeks now and can't seem to find the cause.

Dec 5, 2011I am trying to configure a 3750G that has been sitting on the shelf for several months and am getting the following error -
% Error: Unable to create flash:/microcode_update% Error: It must not already exist
Normally, getting an error during POST isnt a good thing. My first thought was that flash was corrupted or flagged RO somehow. I did fsck flash: with no change. I next tried fsck /test flash:. It tested 77 blocks and performed 0 erasures. It had been running for about 15 minutes with no problems reported so far. Multiple reboots of the switch still report the same error.
I have reviewed the history of what I have done on this switch and finally think I found the problem. I noticed a microcode_update directory that I am not used to see on a 3750. Deleted the directory using the rmdir command and rebooted the switch. On reboot, I noticed that a front_end/ directory was listed as being created as well as fe_type_1 and fe_type_2 were created. The switch now boots up without any errors.

Jan 3, 2013I have two Cisco Aironets 1401 connected to a Cisco Catalyst 3560 Switch. When users log onto the Wifi the APs authenticate with a Freeradius that then authenticates with LDAP.
Recently users have been getting kicked off of the network but I'm not sure why.If so how do I set these APs to roam with my setupd?For all I know there could be an issue with the switch I'm just not sure where to start when it comes to troubleshooting this issue.

My issue is can i just create two DMZ's for both interface Gi0/0 and Gi0/2 without creating an inside zone and Gi0/1 as outside zone as my internal traffic is mostly server based and the users connect remotely through terminal server to access resourcess using RDP, secondly how do I open the relevant ports.I have checked alot and all I have seen is just basic process on using the wizard I have no idea how to go about this issue.

Aug 8, 2012We're currently evaluating Cisco Prime LMS 4.2.Something we've been trying to achieve for the past couple of days is to have LMS notify us when a Microsoft Host is Unreachable, and then to notify us once that alarm has cleared (the Microsoft Host is Reachable again).
We're at the point where the Microsoft Host was discovered, LMS incorrectly identified it as a Cisco Call Manager, so we changed it's identity to non-cisco device > microsoft host > microsoft host. LMS currently has the device listed as being in the 'Questioned' state. SNMP timeout has been set to 15 seconds, and the SNMP community is correct.
Being new to LMS Prime, and having not received any training on the product to this point, we turned to the admin guide, but we couldn't find anything that goes into detail for how to manage the notification for non-Cisco devices.
Is what we're trying to achieve possible with Cisco Prime LMS 4.2? We just want to be able to receive simple 'host unreachable' notifications for Microsoft servers, and the corresponding 'cleared' notifications once the server is back online.

(Since CEF is layer 3 processes in ASICs) How can we check if a router is capable of CEF? Does anyone know a good link/graphic that shows how much faster CEF is than software-based layer 3 processes?

Aug 29, 2012Basically, I have a network which has a LAN and a DMZ. I need to isolate a few servers and users from the LAN so I created a VLAN on the switch. I assigned it an IP address in a different subnet and assigned ports to the VLAN. Port forwarding is configured on the switch.For testing purposes, before this goes live, I connected a computer directly to one of the switch ports (ge4/5) and assigned it a static IP in that subnet, the gateway being the VLAN IP. I can ping the VLAN IP but I can’t ping the router or get to the Internet,I tried setting the gateway to the ASA VLAN interface (e0/1.4) with the same result.The 1st step is to get Internet access. The next step will be to allow access to the Exchange server on the LAN.There are many devices not shown on the diagram but the important ones are there.
