Cisco Routers :: RV016 10 / 100 16-Port VPN Router - IPsec Is Not Working?
Oct 14, 2012
Problem: IPsec VPN setup seems ok (Client to gateway) but is not responding from client requests. However, remote manage works, PPTP works.
My environment:
Hardware: RV016 10/100 16-Port VPN Router
Firmware: v4.2.1.02 (Jan 18 2012 14:10:55)
Clients: Mac OS X 10.8 (integrated VPN client) , Windows 7 (build in VPN client) OR both with NCP-E VPN client.
None of the above works with IPsec. I have tried all kinds of combinations. I don't think the problem is wether I use Group1 or Group2 or DES or AES...It must be something else... Neither of the built-in VPN (IPsec) clients in Mac OS X or Windows can be configured in an easy way. BUT the NCP-E client can. I have tried to set it up to exactly meet the settings on the server but no progress...How do I setup an IPsec VPN group so that I can use any of my VPN clients to work?
PS. I have also tried the client that comes delivered. 1- It does not work and 2- it's only available for Windows.

We are deploying a new batch of RV016 with the latest firmware (4.0.4.02). We are using 3 WAN ports for internet access (WAN1, WAN2, WAN3)The WAN ports connects to Cicso 800 series adsl modem with DHCP.The RV016 WAN1 port setting regularly resets to 0.0.0.0 despite that the modem dhcp is still up and running. A cold boot, resets all the configuration and WAN1 port start working againg a new ip.
All three WAN ports are set to automatically obtain ip from the modems.We have tried several modems, and even swap WAN ports, but the error is persistant to WAN1 only.
WAN2 and WAN3 are up and running without any errors. This error is persistant with WAN1 only.We have also configured a manual ip on WAN1, and after a few hours of operation on all 3 ports, traffic on WAN1 comes to a halt.We have the same error on 3 units we received last week.All there modem are configure on different subnets.It does not seems to be a configuration error with the modem as they work perfectly well with the WAN2, WAN3 ports.We also tested a RV016 out of the box using the wizard setup, without any extra setting/configuration, and we got the same error after a few hours of operation.

just purchase this RV016 and the firmware has been updated to 3.0.2.01-tm.
Almost every download I try through the router leads to a curruption somehow, even though the download manager gets it all. If I go straight from the cable modem I have no problems. I use a cat5 lead from the front ports on the router to my PC. A few small downloads under 512kb work.
I haven't change much from the default setup apart from the IP address to 192.168.12.10
It's a 4mbps upload and 0.8 downlink from what speedtest shows. I have tried diff DL managers, and get the same result on different connected PC's when through the router. The great thing about the RV016 is it speeds up the connection on this cable modem.
What can I change to get downloads working?

We have 3 internet links from different providers connected to configured WAN 1,2,3 in RV016. A remote client needs to connect to a internal VPN Server behind RV016, so we use one-to-one NAT to publish the internal server ip to a Valid IP from WAN3 and setup protocol binding in Multi wan to all trafic (TCP and UDP) from the internal VPN address exits with WAN3.
So, the remote client tries to connect to VPN using this ip Address from WAN3 and sometimes work and sometimes not. It's clear to us that the problem lies in the response from RV016 not coming always from WAN3, because if we disconnect the two other links (WAN1 and 2) Its works flawless.

I was wondering how does failover works on Cisco Small Business RV016. Specifically, I am interested when one WAN line stop working, and all the computers in the LAN start using another line. Does it means that IP addresses of the computers in the LAN will change, or they stay the same? If they change can I set it up that they always stay the same no matter which input WAN they are using?

I'd like to setup a WCCP in those routers, but as I read, it's not possible.
Another way to circumvent this limitation is to foward a request to the router from the LAN port 80 to a LAN IP, something like:
LAN 1 192.168.1.100:80 -> router -> LAN 2 192.168.1.101:80

RV215W router port forwarding not working.Port forwarding works for a short period of time, then stops working. Reboot router, works again for short period of time, then stops again.
I have updated firmware to latest. I had seen other similar bugs posted for 220 and I think 180, not sure if this router has similar bugs and waiting for fix release to firmware.I had recently purchased two, one deployed, will hold off on other now because of issues, and may have to move to different unit if a resolution not found this week.

We have 2 RV220W Routers installed in seperate offices. We are attempting to setup a IPSec tunnel between the two sites. So far we have been unsuccessful in getting this to work.On both sides, we are getting a successful connection established, but netiher site is recieving any packets. Both sides are transmitting packets though. We have exhausted our resources trying to figure out why.

A customer of mine has two RV082 in different locations. The "main" router is providing a gateway-to-gateway VPN tunnel, and is also used by a few road warriors for VPN access. We've had some issues with the "main" router lately, so we've decided to exchange it for a brand new device (v3). The old RV082 was a hardware revision v2 device, so I had to manually rebuild the config on the new router. The new router is working fine so far - connectivity and gateway-to-gateway VPN are fine. IPsec Client VPN, however, doesn't work at all. The config of the new router is identical to the config of the old one, IPsec Client VPN used to work fine on the old router.
The router is running the latest firmware (v4.0.4.02-tm). I've been trying to make IPsec VPN work with "QuickVPNplus ver: 1.0.6" and the "Cisco QuickVPN Client v1.4.2.1". From what I understand, both programs first connect to the routers external IP and download some sort of VPN config file. The info in that file is then used to create the actual connection. The problem is that the config file is invalid. It contains HTML code instead of config data. This is the code: "<HTML><HEAD><meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0; URL=/cgi-bin/welcome.cgi"></HEAD><BODY></BODY></HTML>". The URL is the same I see when logging in to the admin interface of the router. The Cisco client tells me in its "wget_error.txt": "rwConnStart message=All 1 wget requests did not return a valid vpnserver.conf". Both clients connect to the router fine, and the config download itself is working - only the returned data is invalid.
I've already tried lots of stuff to make the problem go away - enabling/disabling the firewall, VPN passthrough options, and other things. I'm beginning to think that there may be a bug in the firmware I'm using, or that the way Client VPN works has changed in a way that makes connecting with a client implementing the "old" method impossible. By the way, PPTP is working fine, so we're using it as a temporary workaround. My client, however, isn't happy with this workaround - he bought a relatively expensive router so he can make use of its advanced features, after all.

I am trying to setup an RV016 router to do "1 to 1 NAT". I am starting with setting the external IP address of my RV016 to 10.8.58.219 on the WAN1 port, and LAN IP 10.10.20.254. Simple enough. When I connect my laptop to port1 on the router's LAN side I can ping the router's external AND internal IP addresses fine; But I can not ping from outside when connected through WAN1 port.I am performing a simple local test with an external hub, I put a patch cable from WAN1 port to the hub, another patch cable from port 1 on LAN side to the same hub, and from my laptop to the hub. When I use my laptop's IP address with the internal schema (10.10.20.100 for example) I can ping both WAN1 and LAN IP's; but when I use on my laptop the external IP schema (10.8.58.100 for example) I can not ping it. Therefore is not working when I connect my router to the real network.I went into the web setup pages of the router and dissabled: firewall and basicaly all security "blocks" it has, and leave it open for my testing.

i have a WRVS4400N Router and behind that router i am running a OPENSWAN Server. I know that the WRVS4400N has a VPN Service on board, but for specific reasons i'd like to use my own ipsec server.
The problem is that i cannot forward the IPSEC Paketes (4500 and 500) coming from the internet interface to the LAN. All other port forwardings like SSH works. I think the reason is that the IPSEC Services (Pluto, etc.) are already running on the router and therefore the pakets cannot be forwarded. The log shows all forwarded port (e.g. SSH) but does not show any IPSEC traffic.
I'd like to turn off the VPN Service on the router, but I cannot find any configuration switch that allow my to do so.

I have a setup with 2 RV220W at 2 locations.Both with the latest Firmware (1.0.3.5). I configured portforwarding for RDP at one site. Works perfekt. I also configured an IPSec VPN between the 2 sites. Works too.
Configuration overview:
Site_1:
- IPSec VPN to site_2
Site_2:
- IPSec VPN to site_1
- Port forwarding for RDP to a local server (server_2)
My first problem is that i can ping server_2 through the VPN from a pc within site_1 but i can not access this server via RDP. As soon as i disable the Portforwarding for RDP at site_2, RDP via VPN works! I assume, that the RV220W mixes up portforwarding and VPN.I tried to set up an additional firewall rule at site_2 allowing the traffic between the local networks of both sites without restrictions and place this rule at toe top. But here is my second problem: I can not add any destination network to the firewall settings (firewall-->access rules). I only allows me to define a host to redirect the traffic to.

I'm trying to setup a simple port forward in the RV 120W Router, but can't seem to get it to work.
I created a custom service called RDP for TCP port 3389-3389. I added a Port Forward to Always Allow the service RDP, from any source IP to destination IP 192.168.50.23. I have tried it with "same as incoming port" and also specified port 3389 for forward from and to.
Firewall access rule is enabled and set to Inbound, Always Allow, RDP service, Any source & destination IP, DNAT IP is 192.168.50.23.

I am using a RV110W with the latest firmware 1.0.1.6 I have some port forwarding configured, which normally work. But sometimes, all port forwarding stop working. Everything else continues working normally, just all port forwarding don't work any more. I tried disabling the port forwarding and enabling them again, this doesn't work. Also disabling the firewall completely does not work. You have to reboot the router, then everything works fine again. When I make a portscan from outside with a "fresh" started router, the forwarded ports are open. When the error occurs and I make a portscan from outside, all ports that should be open (and have been open before) are closed.

when opening SSH service to a Database Administrator within my LAN, that has a RV016 as the default gateway. So confidence, I just set up a port forwarding in Setup > Forwarding and everything works fine, cool.
However, I do not want this to be a public access, I need a specific firewall rule for a specific external IP address (only the DBA fixed IP Internet might connect to my database server through SSH).
O noticed that when a port forwarding is created within RV016, it bypass the firewall default rules and wide-opens the service (port) to the web. Conceptually, this is correct, as port forwarding is a network translation, but I expected that my firewall had work over this.
My current solution was to create a "Deny from all" rule at port 22 and then create one additional rule that allows traffic from an specific IP at port 22.

I have a RV042 router on a single WAN and an internal LAN. I have configured port forwarding as follows: HTTP[TCP/80~80]->10.0.0.6HTTPS[TCP/443~443]->10.0.0.6IMAP[TCP/143~143]->10.0.0.5IMAP SSL[TCP/993~993]->10.0.0.5SMTP SSL[TCP/587~587]->10.0.0.5
Everything works just fine when I have the firewall DISABLED. However, when I enable it the behaviour is erratic. 1 out of 10 attempts to connect to ANY port forwarded works. Almost all attempts time out. Notice that this happens even if using only the default firewall rules (which should be bypassed by the port forwarding as I read in other posts).
My second try was to create firewall rules manually, overriding the default ones. I tried adding rules from source WAN1 (where my connection is) to ANY and to SINGLE IP's on every port. Nothing seems to work.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong, this is really bugging me. I had to turn the firewall off so we can access our servers from outside the office. This shouldn't have to be done.
Just found out that my firewall is getting LOTS and LOTS of Blocked - SYN Flood entries. I think this is why we are having trouble with the firewall. Could this be the problem? I have no idea where all these SYN packets are coming from since they appear with spoofed IPs or come from different bots all over.

I have a rv016 that's been in 24x7 operation since I bought it a few years back. It is out of warranty. It is connected to three cable modems on WANs 1-3. Behind it are a bunch of PCs getting IPs via DHCP. There is a gateway to gateway vpn tunnel setup on wan3 to a rv082 at another site. There is a forwarding entry for http to an internal http server. Everything else is pretty much default.
The router is primarily used to aggregate bandwidth for uploading large numbers of photos. The systems behind the router initiate the uploads and the router automatically load balances the outgoing bandwidth.
This was all working fine until just recently. The ISP is Knology who is upgrading each of the 8m/768k cable modems to 25m/5m. They are also moving from DOCSIS 1 to DOCSIS 3. They are currently in the middle of this upgrade and have upgraded the modems to DOCSIS 3 as well as the speeds to 12m/2m. The problem is that the rv016 Network Service Detection, which is set to "Default Gateway" indicates that the modems fail randomly. Usually only one will be failed, but up to two will fail the Network Service Detection simultaneously.
Knology insists that there is nothing wrong with their modems. I have removed a modem from the rv016 when Network Service Detection indicates it is in a failed state and connected it directly to a computer. It will work, but it has a different IP address and default gateway. As soon as I connect it back to the rv016, it works there too, but on the original IP address and gateway. I've only tried this test this twice so far, so it is a bit inconclusive.
Speed tests behind the rv016 are the same as directly connected to one of the cable modems. The router works normally as it has for years. Nothing else is acting funny.
So my question is, is the rv016 failing or is the ISP having problems?

this router (RV016v3, Firmware: v4.1.1.01-sp (Dec 6 2011 20:03:18)) in regards to it not properly directing UDP packets out of the right WAN, as per the settings stored in Protocol Binding section of [System Management, Multi-WAN].I use the section to direct all traffic from desktop computers (192.168.5.100 ~ 192.168.5.199) through WAN4, and all VoIP related traffic (192.168.5.200 ~ 192.168.5.239) through WAN2(PPPoE).Everything seems to be working well except for some of the UDP traffic from 192.168.5.200 which is seen in the log going out of WAN4 instead of WAN2.I have even created a new entry for [UDP/5060~5060]->192.168.5.200~192.168.5.200(0.0.0.0~255.255.255.255)WAN2, and placed it at the very top of the list.Here are a few lines that I've observed in the log: (Refreshed the registration of two SIP Trunks configured in our PBX)
Feb 23 18:11:47 2012 Connection Accepted UDP 192.168.5.200:5060->184.72.227.214:5060 on eth4

Feb 23 18:11:46 2012 Connection Accepted UDP 192.168.5.200:5060->50.56.59.168:5060 on ppp2
There are no static routes configured, so i'm baffled by what could cause some of the UDP packets to go through the wrong WAN.All TCP Traffic from 192.168.5.200 is seen going though WAN2 as it should.
