Cisco Switching/Routing :: 2960 Is Shutting 2 Ports Down On Network

We have a 2960 switch  which is connected to the core via a VLAN trunk. We have disabled broadcast port suppression but, the 2960 is shutting  is shutting 2 ports down on the network and this looks like excessive braodcast. How and why would the switch start dropping traffic when the default is don't do anything? It had to be rebooted to get the port active again

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 2960 Switch Ports Using POE?

Feb 5, 2013

I have a statck of 4 2960s switches, with POE powered access points on 2 of them. All of the access points appear to be functioning normally. For some reason, on 3 interfaces connected to access points, I get the following when issuing show interfaces status:

Gi3/0/9                      connected: T 7          a-full a-1000 10/100/1000BaseTX

My question is regarding the "T" in the status field. I can't find any documentation on this.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 2960 Set Ports To Untagged VLAN XX

Aug 6, 2012

I have two questions for a Cisco 2960 (WS-C2960-24TC-L)

1. I am working to setup a few Cisco 2960 switches for HP iLO access to our servers. We are going to segregate the iLO network (VLAN 40) from the data network (VLAN 10) by using a different VLAN. All of the HP servers will be configured with static addresses. My question is, how do I set all the ports to VLAN 40 so that untagged devices will automatically go onto VLAN 40? I don't want to have to configure the VLAN on each iLO port on the server. I tried to set the port to: "switchport trunk native vlan 40", but that didn't work.

2. Also, how do you access the web GUI for these switches? I get a login box, but putting in the enable password doesn't work. I have the following commands in the config: [code]

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 2960 Storm Control On Trunk Ports

Feb 9, 2012

We have around a dozen Catalyst 3560 and 2960 switches in a ring topology. We are considering adding storm control to our trunk ports. Up until now we have only used it on edge ports with default values and without error-disable.I am proposing that we also add storm control to trunk ports at a lower level and that we error-disable only the redundant links that make up our loops.

-storm-control broadcast level 25.00 20.00
-storm-control multicast level 2.00 1.00
-storm-control action shutdown [only on redundant links]

In a storm all links will restrict broadcast which should work accessing remote switches, but the redundant links should errdisable and block the redundant path. It is important that the action line is not applied to links that are not redundant as we could isolate parts of the network. Any reason not to use storm control on trunks?

Protocols / Routing :: Machine Refusing Untagged Ports

Mar 14, 2013

Our College uses Ethernet connexion for its students with the IPv4 Address of each machine configured using DHCP (not manually). In order to prevent students from playing certain online videogames some ports are blocked for all machines on the network, but they can be manually untagged (ie for competitive play). The problem occurred when we tried to untag the ports to allow online games on this machine. After the allowed ports were modified, the machine refused to assign an IP adress to itself - no matter how many times we try to renew the DHCP Lease. Restoring the previous set of allowed ports fixes the problem, but doesn't allow for online play.

config: OS X 10.8.2 with nothing fancy. Other machines on the network do no experience this problem.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 2960 G / 1941 - Network Design

Jun 14, 2012

I have been recently asked to design a network. What I have for equipment is four 2960G's and one 1941 router. One switch is a root switch and the other three will have end devices on them.I have decided on three V lans to go with: VLAN20 Data, VLAN30 ISCSI, and VLAN99 Management each with seperate trunk links and redundancy (see picture below).

I have a seperate trunks for each V lan using the switch port trunk allowed. With exception to the Data V lan.My design has the Data V lan as the native because it is going to be receiving untagged traffic from the external network. I have set up inter v lan routing on the 1941 via sub-interfaces to allow them to talk to each other (or because of allowed they cannot?). I have one port coming from my router to my switch via Ethernet cable which is my bridge out. I have my external port doing a NAT translation for my inside addresses and a Default route set up ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 gig0/0. I am using rapid- PVST to prevent loops and provide my zero downtime convergence when a link goes down. As it stands right now I cannot talk out of my network or inside of my network.

You can see it is highly redundant and I do not want to change it. This network is going to be deployed but there will never be anybody physically there to manage it which is why I made it as redundant as humanly possible.

I have a strange error on my home network that I cannot find a solution to.I have an Huawei SmartAX MT882 from TalkTalk acting as a modem connected to a D-Link DSL-G624T acting as a router/switch. Connected to the D-Link I have a Windows 7 Pro machine (64-bit, SP1) and an XP (home i think) machine (sp 2 i think). The SmartAX modem is set up to perform DHCP and DNS relaying and the D-Link has DHCP turned off and DNS relay turned off.The Win7 machine can access the network, get an IP address and access the internet without problems, regardless as to the status of the XP machine. The XP machine can access the network, get an IP address and access the internet with no problems ONLY of the win7 is powered up. When the win7 machine is off, the XP machine seems to drop about 25% of the ping packets between it and the D-Link router and has no internet access (because of this i assume). [code]

Installed Network Printer On Windows 7 Machine / Now XP Machine Won't Print To It

Jul 20, 2011

New Win-7 machine set up. I used the printer set-up wizard to install a networked printer in the new machine with absolutely no problem. Proved it would print from that machine. Now, I get a call informing me that her old XP machine, which had been printing to the network printer with no problems, will no longer print.Documents go into the print queue, but they don't get printed. No error messages show up.I did some messing around via remote access, and finally removed the printer with the intention of reinstalling it.Scanning for network printers turned up several redundant instances of the same printer with different names. Some are identified as "invalid" some a "access denied". Bottom line. I can't get any of the selections to install. On the Win-7 machine I did find a window that indicated that the printer is designated as being shared, but I didn't explicitly set it for sharing when I installed it. Also, I somehow got to a window that told me that for printers that were to be shared with other versions of windows I could optionally install drivers to support such machines. Didn't have the driver disk handy and took the window down. Now I can't even find it again.I need sorting this all out.Part of the problem is that out there in "network land" there are redundant remnants of previous installations that are being remembered inappropriately.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 5510 Isolating Switch Ports For A Separate Network

Feb 2, 2012

I have to configure failover Active/Standby on my ASA 5510.I am wondering how i could do for the outside interface, i mean, actually the ASA1 outside interface is linked directly to our Internet router. So now if i have to add ASA2 connecting to that router i will need a switch between them.I have already a switch for DMZ & LAN.The thing is that i will have to allow 3 switchs ports to communicate with each others.

- 1 for ASA1--outside
- 1 for ASA2--outside
- 1 for Internet router

How could i isolate these 3 ports to make them communicate alone ? Should i use VLAN for that ?And if i use VLAN, will this require to make any change of configuration on my firewalls (ASA1 & ASA2) outside interface ?I am a bit lost with this, if i am correct i will not have to do some "vlan tagging" on the firewall itself ?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 2960 / ME 3600 - Stack Switches Are Good Solution For Resilience Of Huge Network

May 8, 2012

I have a question for Cisco Cat.2960-s Flex Stack switches which are installing on our sties. Two of 2960-s Stack switches as access switch and two of Cisco ME 3600X Series as distribution layer switches are to be installed in our sites. In case of two stack switches, One is will be a Master and the other one will be a member logically, as you know. So, if the master fails, the other one automatically becomes the stack master following a well-documented election process.

Now, it is my question. How long takes to be a stack master from a member switch ?  I cant find it on white paper of Cat.2960-s flex stack .
And also, I heard that sometimes a member switches don't election process when the master fails as a result, all stack members become
a panic.  Is that really right ? In addition, I heard that the stack switches have many troubleshooting points than stand alone switches.
I really wanna know if the stack switches are good solution for resilience of huge network site. I'm waiting an answer from  those who have experience of maintenance or installation.

I get the list of mac addresses connected to the switch ( Both access point's mac address & the clients addresses) by "show mac-address table dynamic" command. However, i am unable/confused to get the output of the following scenarios:

1. I would require to export the mac address from the switch to the local machine in any format (May be by using an SNMP tool, if available) so that the same needs to be used in my C# for development. What would be the way for the same ?

2. The mac address in the mac address table doesn't get updated dynamically. (Eg Scenario: A wifi client gets connected to an access point which inturn is connected to the switch, the mac address of the client shows up in the switch table. However if the client is disconnected, the client's mac address would still be displayed in the switch table )
