Cisco Switching/Routing :: 300 Series Switches To Build A New Network

Feb 19, 2012

I have to use 9 Cisco 300 series switches to build a new network. I will use one of them (core switch) in L3 for routing between Vlans (3 Vlans) and the others in L2. Is there a software to centralized all switches configuration, operation and monitoring?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Using 6509 Series As Core Switches

Jun 2, 2012

we are using cisco 6509 series switches as core switches. and Cisco 4510,4507 series switches as edge switches. all the vlans are created at core switches and propogating to edge switches through VTP. we are using OSPF as routing protocol at core switch for internal routing. till now we are using 4510,4507 switches as layer 2 switches. Since, 4510 & 4507 switches are hign end swithces i want use them as layer 3 switches instead of layer 2.if i change these switches from layer 2 to layer 3 does it make any impact on our network or better to keep them as layer 2 switches.if i change these switches to layer 3 is there any advantage i will have.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Power Series Cabling On 3750 Switches?

Oct 22, 2012

I am connecting power cable (series power cables) on 3750 stacks. i have connected them the same way the stack cables are connected i.e. fo rexample on a stack with 3 3750s:

1- fitst slot on fist switch connected the second slot last switch in the stack.

2- second slot/ port on the first switch to the first on second and seoncd on teh second switch to first on the third switch.

this how they are alway been stacked. Now, I need to connect power cables and I have followed the same method for stacks up to 4 switches. it seems that if a stack has more tham 4 switches, then the cabling will be dofferent!?I was wondering what will be on the cabling scheme for stacks more than 4 switches.

I understand that it is good to connect to the MSFC3 via console and upgrade this first, is this correct?

I also have to upgrade some 6509 but I only can test it on one 6509-E, how to get everything up to date. [code]

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3750 Stack Switches Compared To 4500 Series

Dec 30, 2011

I'm thinking about using a 3750 stacking around 4 or 5 switches intead of using one 4500 series switch.

1-My first argument was concerning the budget (one 4500 instead of four or five 3750 in stack mode) ---- Here i think 4 or 5 stacked 3750 is cheap than one 4500
2- My second argument was about harware redundancing that i don't have with one 4500 and that i have with stack mode ----Here i have more hardware redundancing with 3750
3- The bug that we notice today in 2960 and 3750 and not in 4500
4- Simple to manage a 4500 compare to 3750 stack design
5- I was looking also for the one with best backplane ----Here i didn't have any infos concerning the best backplane between 4 or 5 stack 3750 and a 4500.
6- I'm also looking for power redundancing.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Location Of FIB And Adjacency Table In Both 6500 Series And Fixed Ports Switches

Apr 28, 2012

I am little confused about the location of FIB table and adjacency table in both cisco 6500 series and fixed ports switches .In case of 6500 series switches

"Central CEF mode:The CEF FIB and adjacency tables reside on the route processor, and the route processor performs the express forwarding. Use this CEF mode when line cards are not available for CEF switching, or when features are not compatible with distributed CEF."

If line cards do no support CEF, then FIB and adjacency tables are built and are located on route processor( control plane ). Data plane operations are implemented in software and route processor performs those operations.

Some Cisco switches actually use different hardware to control the different planes. For example, the Cisco Catalyst 6500 is a modular switch that uses the Multilayer Switch.Feature Card (MSFC) for control-plane operations, and the supervisor Policy Feature Card (PFC) for the data-plane operations.

Supervisor module has  has MSFC and PFC. MSFC implements control plane operation where as PFC implements data plane operation. But the first paragraph says in Central cef mode, both data plane and control plane operations are implemented by route processor. [code]

Do these switches implement the Central mode cef in same way as mentioned above. i.e

"Central CEF mode:The CEF FIB and adjacency tables reside on the route processor and the route processor performs the express forwarding. Use this CEF mode whenline cards are not available for CEF switching, or when features are not compatible with distributed CEF."Or  fixed ports switches such as 3750 implement data plane operation in hardware where FIB tabe and adjacency table are maintained on Data plane.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Possibility Of Purchasing Few 3750 To Build Switch Stack

Jan 7, 2013

I'm looking at the possibility of purchasing a few 3750 to build a switch stack to replace my current core and access switches. I'd like for the stack to support server, SAN, and user traffic, as well as provide simple switch management, redundancy, and failover. I've also been looking at the 4500, 6500, and Nexus series switches (although the Nexus switches maybe a bit too much for my network).

My current environment consists of 3560's as the core/distribution/access switches, a mixture of Hyper-V and VMWare environments (although we're slowly migrating to Hyper-V), an HP SAN (P4500), and about 100 users. Any issues going with the 3750's or have an alternative, more efficient solution?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3560 / 2851 - Build LAN Resiliency With Spanning Tree And Bridge Groups?

Oct 26, 2012

I have a site that is very dense, but not high throughput. I have 4x48 port switches all 3560 and 1 2851 router. The switches are pretty much full to the brim but the site is never completly lit, they just like to move around a lot. However i wanted to provide this site with as much redundnace as possible. So my first thought was to build redundant pathing with the switches so that they could loose a switch and not have a single point of failure. So therefore I built a ring. SW1 to SW2, SW2 to SW3, SW3 to SW4, SW4 to SW1.  To make this even more redundant against port hardware failure, i used two uplinks for each and built an etherchannel. is it good practice to use Etherchannel and Spanning Tree together? So i now have a good redundant LAN switching topology. I have multiple VLANs at the site so I am using Rapid-PVST. I did not set priorities on the switches as I don't think that is really truly necessary, but correct me if I am wrong!Ok so next step is to make sure that my WAN connection for all of these switches is redundant. I have a 2851 router, with 1 of the built in interfaces dedicated to our ethernet hand-off WAN connection (MPLS in this case using BGP routing). The other would be used as an uplink. I also got an additional card for the Router so that i can have redudant local LAN connections. I then built up some IRB bridges so that I could uplink the Router to SW1 and SW3.   Is it good practice to use IRB Bridging on a Router to provide redundancy? So at this site i have the first part running, and it works pretty well but I have had 1 strage issue, which has to do with after a failure and re-convergence of spanning-tree, it seems that DHCP starts failing to work. I actually had to go into each of my switches make a dummy VLAN interface and put on helper-addresses to get them to work. They are not L3 switches (programatically speaking) so they should just forward the broadcast packet onto the router, which DOES have the helper-addresses programmed,Also at another site I have the bridge router setup configured, just without so many switches, and no etherchannel between the switches. This seems to work flawlessly, but the site is very small so performance issues would be difficult to spot since they are just thin-clients coming back to a Citrix server over a single T1.

So the SG300's have STP on them and prevent network loops when other switches on the network also support STP too. However, if someone plugs in a non-managed switch that doesn't support STP with a network loop, is there anything within the SG300 switches to isolate and/or prevent that from happening?

Cisco Switches :: Dynamic VLAN Assignment And Layer 3 Switching On 300 Series?

Jul 11, 2012

I have a SG300-28P switch. I just read in the Administration Guide that, when in Layer 3 mode, the switch doesn't support MAC-based VLAN or Dynamic VLAN Assignment.

So, in order to assign a client to a VLAN based on their MAC or based on the response of a RADIUS server, we have to disable layer 3 features. Without layer 3 switching, the switch is unable to act as a default gateway and forward packets between VLANs. As a result, the VLANs can't communicate in any way, or access the internet, unless a separate router is connected to every VLAN. Right? Doesn't this limitation significantly reduce the usefulness of the DVA feature?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3750 Switches Doesn't See Traffic From Other Network

we have three separated network segments going to one Cisco 3750 switch all is L2 .. from this switch is 100 mbit uplink.we need to apply some Qos mechanism not to saturate line by traffic from one network.. Configuration from various reason CANNOT be done on switch where 100Mbit line is terminated.. so all must be done on SW1,2,3..Correct me if iam wrond but as switches doesnt see traffic from other network iam affraid only think we can do  is limit bandwidth on links going into SW1,2,3 to 33 Mbit.I found commad srr-queue bandwidth limit. But links going to SWs are 1Gbit so if i force bandwidth to 10% (minimum what command allows) its  100 Mbit..If I force speed on those links to 100Mbit and than apply  srr-queue bandwidth limit to 30% doest it work.??. Will  srr-queue bandwidth limit speed to 30Mbit?? Or srr-queue bandwidth limit is calculated from maxim speed of interface?

The objective is to route specific VLAN traffic and the caveat is that I have multiple VLANs with the same network address.

For example:

VLAN100 10.10.10.0/28 VLAN101 10.10.11.0/28 VLAN102 10.10.12.0/28
VLAN103 10.10.12.0/28
VLAN104 10.10.11.0/28

I need traffic going from VLAN100 with a destination of 10.10.11.0 forwarded to VLAN101 and NOT VLAN104.

This task is currently being completed by a multi context firewall and we're trying to decommission the asset.

Build 1 Home Network Using 2 Wifi Connections?

Sep 7, 2012

setting up a single home network in my apartment that will be able to connect to and use 2 separate wifi internet connections to provide stability and reliable bandwidth for a home network.

Situation: I have recently moved into an apartment complex that has 2 separate wifi connections that are available to the residents free of charge. (yes i am authorized to use both) I do have the option of paying for and having my own personal DSL line installed but I would much rather use the free wifi and not have the monthly bill.

The Problem: My apartment is located far enough away from each of the routers (One wifi at each end of the building and I am in the middle) that my signal strength is poor most of the time and sometimes heavy traffic on one wifi requires that I disconnect and connect to the other. Wifi A is farther and has very low signal and low or no connectivity. Wifi B has good signal most of the time but gets very slow during peek usage times of the day.

I understand that I need one or more high gain antennas in order to receive adequate signals from either Wifi connection.

Between me and my son we have 2 laptop PCs, 1 Desktop PC, 1 network printer, 1 Xbox, 1 HDTV and my smartphone. I don't want to try to equip each device with its own high gain antenna and try to figure out which device should be connected to which Wifi depending on available signal and bandwidth. Rite now I do not have a Home network set up at all and we are only using 1 laptop and the Xbox and each is directly connected via wifi (usually to Wifi B).

If I could connect to either Wifi A or B with decent bandwidth and reliability and then be able to network or connect all my devices via wireless or wired to my own router/extender etc. I would be happy. However.. Given that I must share bandwidth with the other residents and at times one Wifi has heavy use while the other does not. I have been trying to research how to connect to both wifi signals for load balancing, reliability and hopefully greater bandwidth.
