Cisco Switching/Routing :: Enable Multicast On 2950 / 2960 Series Switches?
Dec 8, 2011How do you enable multicast traffic on 2900 series switches?
View 7 RepliesHow do you enable multicast traffic on 2900 series switches?
View 7 RepliesI am aware that private-vlans are not supported on edge switches like 2960 series - so my question is would it be possibel to ceate private vlans on say just the core switch which would be a 3570 or 4506 that supports private vlans and then just trunk these to the edge like normal vlans?what I need to achive is to have edge port not able to communicate to each other even across switches - which cannot be done using 'protected' port so need the private vlan feature?

how we can enable multicast on the Nexus 7000 switches in the simplest form so this will continue operating.
I have a design for my infrastructure and i'm thinking to choose 4 or 5, or more, 2960 series in a stack mode instead of one 4500 series?

I have a 2960G that I keep on the bench as a work switch. I assigned an IP address to it. The techs have had trouble imaging workstations using GHOST. Do any config changes need to be made to enable multicast to work? Everything is in VLAN1 at this point and the GHOST server is also the DHCP server.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am wondering if it has its own DHCP router and if theres a command to enable it?Also Random side question. it hands out ip addresses to other devices (the 2950 im using infront of a router) but when I hook up another switch to this switch it doesnt initialize the port or try to connect? why.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI need to enable multicast routing on 2960s but the command "ip multicast-routing" isn't available on my release (12.2.(55)).
From which release this command is available?
A 2960G switch is doing IGMP snooping and is configured as the querier. There is no multicast routing.
Port 1 - Video Set Top Box A
Port 2 - Video Set Top Box B
Port 3 - Multicast Source
Both Set Top Boxes A & B are set to receive the video delivered in the same multicast group.Every 60 seconds the switch generates an IGMP General Query message which is sent out all the ports in the VLAN.There is a 10 second timeout in the Query message. Devices that wish to join (or remain joined) to the multicast group have this amount of time to respond with a Join Message directed at the multicast group. Devices deliberately wait a random duration within the timeout time before replying.
For some reason (which I don't understand), if the switch receives a Join request message from a Set Top Box, it forwards that messages out of the port to the other Set Top Box. So, let's say Box A responded with the Join Message first. Box B now sees the Join message and now thinks there is another multicast receiver on its branch of the network, so it suppresses its Join Message to avoid sending an unnecessary message. If by chance Box A responds first 2 or 3 times in a row, the switch will not have seen a response from port 2 for awhile, so it prunes that port from the multicast. Eventually, Box B responds first and gets re-joined onto the multicast. It is now Box A that may get pruned if it is consecutively slower.
How do I prevent the switch from replicating the Join message out to the other Set Top Box? I have verified this behavior with Wireshark. But, I believe the Join message is only supposed to be forwarded to a multicast router (if there is one - and there isn't), not to other ports. The 2960 is running 12.2(58) SE2.
Attached setup i am planning for testing multicast output from different vendors using VLC and STB. This Setup made to test the picture quality between the vendors at the same time on the multi viewer screen.
1) Only a 2960 Gig port switch with only one L2 v lan with IGMP snooping enabled.
In this scenario where Source and receivers are in the same L2 v lan ( no L3 interface is involved) hope i would able to test all the multicast sources with out any additional configuration on the Cisco switch.
I am working on Multicast scenario, There is one 6513E switch one 2960 switch. Two VRF's are configured in core switch (6513) IPTV-SRV and Villa-VRF IPTV-SRV vrf has IPTV server and Villa-VRF has IPTV i.e. client.
V LAN 30 is mapped to IPTV-SRV vrf with subnet address 192.168.30.0/24
V LAN 12 is mapped to Villa-VRF with sub net address 192.168.12.0/24
I did the following configuration for VRF but its not working . i am not an expert in multicast design but seems i did most of the configs.
ip vrf IPTV-SRV
rd 30:1
mdt default 232.1.1.1
route-target export 30:1
route-target import 10:1

We found out that only local multicast ip address range is not passing between the sites, any other range is passing, local range is 239.0.0.0 and above.
We have two different datacenters, the internal switch is 2960S (Stacked) with 1-10 vlans and the external switch is 3560E, the external switch is adding another tag (qinq, dot1q), vlan 611, and send the packets to metro line to the other site.
on the other site we have the same configuration.
internal switch from site A is configured with igmp querier and the internal switch port on site B connected to the external switch is configured as mrotuer port.
multicast and igmp is passig between the sites, but the local multicast range is not passing, igmp filterring is configured on all port but no profile is defined and no ports are filterred, on the external switch igmp snooping is disabled.
Is it possible to run VTP V3 on 2950 and 2960 switches. If so what version of IOS supports V3? Our 2960s are running 12.2(25r)SEE1, and 2950s are running 12.1(22)EA4a. Neither of which supports v3.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a number of class-'c's as a hand-off from my data center fiber to my 2960, which then sprawls the racks with about many 2950 switches, mostly 20 machines per switch. To allow machines on one 2950 to push data to another 2950 without routing back to my ISP's router(which costs money for bandwidth) isn't is possible to trunk one port on each 2950 to another 2950 and adding a addititional vlan8 to them. Then data jumps from 2950 to 2950 without going back to the 2960 or mainly not going back to my ISP's router. Is this the correct way to accoplish this with extra vlan and trunking the 2950's to each other or am I looking at this all wrong?

I have tried to allow all vlans or vlan 1 specifically and the output of the above doesn't seem to change. I am wondering if there is something in the config-register that is preventing trunking, but I don't really know enough yet!
The output of my second switch is identical to this one, the only difference is that I have it configured as a vtp client.
I have more than 20 Cisco switches in my office which is basically a soap manufacturing factory. The switches include Cisco 2950, 2960, 3560, 3750 etc. We have routers also which include 2821, 2951 etc. We also have Cisco WLC 2125 and LAP 1262 series. Sometimes all these devices management comes very tough to us.
We need to log on to different devices for troubleshooting/network management which sometimes becomes very tough to us. So I wonder if there any Cisco applications or tools by which we can centrally manage all these devices.
I have a Cisco Catalyst 2960 series switch. When I connect another switch or a VMWare Esx server on one of the ports, the port blinks for few seconds and then goes off. When I connect a desktop or laptop or a windows server the ports stay led and I can access resources on the network. However, when connect another switch or a vmware esx server, the port is disabled.
What config in the switch can I check to make sure the ports stay on regardless when I connect a desktop / laptop, switch or vmware server?
I am looking into the possibility of using private vlan's for some dmz implementations however I do have what may be some very rudimentary questions. It seems straightforward how to configure the primary/secondary vlan configuration as well as associating them. However in my case I would be looking to configure the PVLAN on a 6500-vss platform acting as the router while all of the hosts which I would desire to have in the isolated vlan would be spread out across a number of older Cisco switches which only support "protected port" setup or Procurve switches all of which I do not have budget to replace with something newer. So in my scenario I would have a 6500 connected by trunk to multiple switches which only support a protected port setup such as a Procurve (top of rack) or a Cisco 2950. As the Procurve or 2950 would not support Private VLAN setup, do I then just configure the secondary vlan to be allowed across the trunk from the 6500, configure that vlan on the Procurve or 2950 (as vtp will not foward the info for the secondary vlan) and assign that vlan to the host port as well as setting it as a protected port and this will communicate just fine across the trunk to the router as well as stopping the protected port in top of rack switch 1 from being able to communicate to a protected port in top of rack 2,3,etc? If the above scenario is what needs to be done, do I just use a regular trunk or do I have to use a PVLAN trunk?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a 2x Cisco 3750G switches (Stacked) that are part of an IP Video Surveillance System .All network is set to 1 VLAN (VLAN 1 default). The Cisco SWs ( Core ) are configured with IGMP Querier + Snooping .Connected to the Cisco SWs are 4 Fiber Rings(Loops) for redundancy . RSTP and IGMP Snooping are enabled on all the network SWs .Network Architecture Figure :
When all Fiber Rings (Loops ) are connected , the Cisco and Ring SWs spanning-tree tables show the blocked and forwarding ports properly .I am able to connect all my IP Cams + Encoders to the Ring SWs and connect my Servers + WorkStations to the Cisco SWs to record and view the multicast ip streams .All streams from Rings 1 ,3 and 4 are getting normally to the Servers + WorkStations through multicast ( IGMP Snooping are filled correctly on the Cisco and non-Cisco SWs ) . All multicast streams are joined normally except for Ring 2 .The Multicast streams passing through Ring 2 will operate normally for around 2 hours then after that the Fiber SWs begin to flood their multicast traffic causing the cams on the same switch to drop off the network .
I checked the Configuration of all the SWs on Ring 2 but all are are the same .
What is weird is that I have to set all the streams to unicast to stop the flooding just on Ring 2 (All other rings are not affected ) then after some time if I enabled a video multicast stream on one of the SWs of the Ring it will be streamed properly to the Servers + WorkStations ( All IGMP tables along the way will be filled properly ) then again after 2 hours or so , the flooding will start again suddenly and all IGMP table entries for the SW on Ring2 will be empty . No problem occurs on the other Rings which have more multicast streams .
