Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3560-C Series L3 Switches Support OSPF?
Jul 16, 2012
OSPF normally only comes with IPservices image and not IP Base image. The 3560-C series data sheet says that it only suport IP Base image, yet it mentions that support for OSPF in included. Are there any restictions in the OSPF support?.

I believe the answer is yes, but incorperating more layer 3 features of our 3750's, I want to know if they fully support EIGRP or OSPF?
Also for a small business of 4 locations, each with a 10mbps fiber and a 1.5mbps mpls... wouldn't you say EIGRP would be easier? Want to look at making the failover automatic if the 10mbps fiber goes down between a site, then the network fails over to 1.5mbps mpls. When the fiber returns in service then the network automatically preferr the fiber again.
Currently we use static routes and if there is a provider outage we have to manually edit the config to flip flop the routes.

I am beginning to implement OSPF into the network I work on. I have a network which consists of multiple 4500, 6500 series routers and 3560s. Each switch has its own set of VLANs. In other words VLAN X on one switch is not the same as VLAN X on another switch. I had envisioned connecting each switch via trunk links and then routing via the loopback addresses on each device. That didn't work. Then I created a VLAN 100 on each switch. Each one was configured with an IP in the same subnet range (10.3.0.1 and 10.3.0.2). I added these addresses to the OSPF process in area 0. It worked. However, this is not desired. I have not seen many examples of 4500 layer 3 switches configured with OSPF. The examples I have seen show the interfaces configured with IPs.

The 6509 Series Switches support the scenario VSS Active-Active Chassis, I would like to setup both switch's as one virtual switch but working at the same time, not with Active - Stand By Chassis.
My plans it to create PortChannel accross both Switches 6509 in order to have 2 links one connected to one slot/switch and the other connected to slot/switch in the second 6509 for servers redundancy.

We have our network setup as displayed in the attached. We have 2 HQ offices and 1 branch office. The branch office needs to connect to resources located at both HQs but taking the most effecient path. We have ethernet circuits connecting from each HQ to 2 x Cisco 3560 switches in the branch. HSRP has been configured on the 3560 switches with SW1 as active and SW2 as standby. OSFP has been configured in a single area 0 and the path cost on the link between HQs has been increase to allow 3560 SW1 to route to HQ1 directly and HQ2 via 3560 SW2.The 3560s are connected with a trunk with a L3 SVI for OSPF. This seems to work ok but I have noticed that the branch could become transit if the HQ1 to HQ2 link breaks. How can this be avoided? I realise that if we configure the branch subnets and SW1 to SW2 link in a stub area (area1) then all traffic will route from SW1 to HQ1 and will never share over SW2. I'm assuming that this is because OSPF chooses inter-area routes over intra-area.

If i look at the Feature Navigator , it says that IP Base Supports OSPF and EIGRP. But if i look at the Cisco Link it contradicts the Cisco Feature Navigator.

I acquired a 3560X-24P-L Switch which I wanted to use at our datacenter. However, I need a switch that supports OSPF. It came with a Universal IOS but there was no "Router" command under conf t. I downloaded and applied the latest "IP Base" IOS, but still no Router OSPF. Based on the matrix here > [URL] I thought "IP Base" supported OSPF, but what exactly is "OSPF for routed access" ? Do I actually need an "IP Services" IOS? From my download options, I do not see an IP Services IOS for the 3560X-24P-L so I'm left to assume that the switch does not support L3 / OSPF. So my question is this particular switch supports L3 / OSPF and what is Universal IOS?

I'm trying to work out if I need to order the "IP services" image for a couple of C3750-X. I need to run OSPF on these switches, but find the IOS image requirements on Cisco contradict.
At the top of the data sheet it says: • Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) in IP Base image
On the product info page it says: IP Base: Enterprise Access Layer 3 Switching, including OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) for routed access
But in lots of other places it says you need 'IP services' for OSPF.
As the IP services IOS is quite a bit more expensive I would like to avoid buying it. What image do I need to run OSPF?

Is there reason why WS-C3560C-8PC-S and WS-C3560C-12PC-S is not supported in Cisco Network Assistent? According to the data sheets for these switches CNA should be supported. I saw another forum post stating that the Gigabit versions has been added to the supported list as of version 5.7."The Cisco Catalyst 3560-C and 2960-C Series compact switches offer both the traditional Cisco CLI for detailed configuration and Cisco Network Assistant software, a PC-based tool for quick configuration based on preset templates."

I'm looking at implementing a new DMZ and wanted Netflow capability for security monitoring. The architectural principles I have to adhere to dictate that the switches within the DMZ are layer 2 however to get Netflow I need a minimum of a 3560/3750X, Network Services module, IP Base IOS with ip routing and CEF enabled. To do this and still keep the switch functioning as a layer 2 device the intention was not to configure SVI's or any static/dynamic routing protocols. Will Netflow still work in that scenario?

I heard that the WS-C3560E-24PD-S and the WS-C3750-48PS-S have a limitation on the number of 7945s supported (ie i can only run 10 or 15 on each switch before the power runs out). Any knowledge with these pieces of equipment verify the maximum supported? I'm having trouble finding documentation showing any maximums.

Does it depend on how the FEX is connected to the parent 55xx?

Was building a small network in Cisco Packet Tracer and ran in to an issue. I have 4 routers running OSPF, and off one of the routers I have 5 3560 Multilayer switches. The router that the switches hang off of, I have a sub-interface with dot1q encapsulation, set for vlan 10 and an IP Address. 10.14.16.1/24. The switches have interface vlan 10 configures, and have IPs in the same subnet. From that router, I can ping/telnet to all the switches without issue. My problem arises when I try and reach those switches from any other router. OSPF is set to redistribute static and connected subnets. The routing table is populated correctly on all the routers. When I ping and trace the packet, it looks like it makes it all the way to the respective switch, but the packet never makes it back. I've played with the default route on the switches to no avail. Am I trying to implement this incorrectly, or am I just missing something?

we are using cisco 6509 series switches as core switches. and Cisco 4510,4507 series switches as edge switches. all the vlans are created at core switches and propogating to edge switches through VTP. we are using OSPF as routing protocol at core switch for internal routing. till now we are using 4510,4507 switches as layer 2 switches. Since, 4510 & 4507 switches are hign end swithces i want use them as layer 3 switches instead of layer 2.if i change these switches from layer 2 to layer 3 does it make any impact on our network or better to keep them as layer 2 switches.if i change these switches to layer 3 is there any advantage i will have.

We have 7 3560's in 7 different locations connected to our providor for wan access. Our provider has given us a copper cable at each point and we have connected it directly to our 3560 switch at each location. Each port is configured the same way at each location. Each switch is running eigrp. All of the switch ports on each switch are configured as a trunk and vlan 299 had the ip address for the eigrp connection: [code] This setup is working as each switch see's all of the other switches as an eigrp neighbor. We have also made sure that the switch at our head office has spanning tree priority for vlan 299.
So the problem is, if there is a change in the topology at one of the locations it usually causes one or more of the other connections to go down for some reason. We just cannot pinpoint what is causing this change. There are no log's or anything other than an eigrp hold time expired message.?

We have a couple of Cisco switches and connected a (Windows 7) laptop to one of them and it gets its IP address from a DHCP server.I can now ping the IP from all of the switches, no problem, also not when I log on to the core switch in the same VLAN as both notebooks. But from my (Windows 7) laptop, which is in the same VLAN as the target laptop, I cannot ping it.
I checked, default gateway is good on both sides, as are DNS servers.
Target notebook ---- Catalyst 3560 V2 switch === Core Catalyst 3750 switch (stack) === Catalyst 3560G switch --- My notebook

I have a Cisco 3560 connected via fiber to a Nortel 1612G. The connection is up/up, the V LAN's on the switch work as needed, but I can not ping the switch from the Nortel, and as a result I can not remote into the Cisco for management. I see in the configuration for the trunk that it is configured for a native v LAN, but I don't see it defined which v LAN's are allowed, could this be the issue? I will provide some of the config information for the Cisco side, I understand the issue may be on the Nortel end but if the Cisco part looks OK?
Port config for the trunk:
interface GigabitEthernet0/49
description port_6_1612G
switch port trunk encapsulation dot1q
switch port trunk native v LAN 120
switch port mode trunk
Native v LAN config:
interface Vlan120ip address 172.16.120.11 255.255.255.128
