Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3560 - Cannot Ping With Large Size
May 17, 2012
I have the Cisco 3560 switch. I can ping both from switch to server or from server to switch. However, I cannot ping with large size, for example,
ping 192.168.1.1 size 10000 (failed all).
I can ping 192.168.1.1 size 5000
(the size allow between <36-18024>)
It's normal or a problem with the cable or something else? Because I have the error about working with MSSQL server 2008 R2, the error is:
[DBNETLIB][Connection Write (send()).]General network error. Check your network documentation
OS: Microsoft Server 2008 R2 Standard

A few days ago this was working properly, but I must have changed some things that adjusted some settings because I am unable to ping between 2 devices that are on the same switch, in the same network, in the same VLAN. I am able to ping to the VLAN interface on the switch.
This is my configuration (Catalyst 3560 Layer 3 switch):
ALGSWI01#show vlan
VLAN Name Status Ports
---- -------------------------------- --------- -------------------------------
1 default active Gi0/3, Gi0/4, Gi0/7, Gi0/9

We have a couple of Cisco switches and connected a (Windows 7) laptop to one of them and it gets its IP address from a DHCP server.I can now ping the IP from all of the switches, no problem, also not when I log on to the core switch in the same VLAN as both notebooks. But from my (Windows 7) laptop, which is in the same VLAN as the target laptop, I cannot ping it.
I checked, default gateway is good on both sides, as are DNS servers.
Target notebook ---- Catalyst 3560 V2 switch === Core Catalyst 3750 switch (stack) === Catalyst 3560G switch --- My notebook

I have two branch offices connected with cisco routers(WAN link, leased line 2mbps). I am the NetAdmin for branch A. Sitting on branch A router or from systems behind the router, i can ping my branch B router or systems upto packet sizes of 1450bytes only. If i make packet size as 1500bytes, i cannot ping any of my systems in branch B and vice-versa.With packet size 1500 bytes, i can ping upto the serial interface of my branch A router. NetAdmin at brach B says they are no QoS configured which prevents ping at packet size of 1500 bytes. I don't have rights to access my brach B router and check the configuration. I am not able to pin point whether it is some configuration issue at my brach B router or ISP issue.

I have VLAN X with MTU 9216 on Switch-A. I also have VLAN Y with MTU 9216 on Switch-B. But not their SVIs are MTU 9216.They are not communicating to each other on packet size of above 1500. This is because SVI VLAN X and SVI VLAN Y connect to each other through SVI VLAN Z (Point-to-point Layer-3 connection between two switches). Although SVI VLAN X and SVI VLAN Y communicate through SVI VLAN Z, this inter-link port is a trunk port carrying other VLANs but VLAN Z is a native vlan for which SVI VLAN Z is defined. In order to make it work.
1. Do I need to change SVI VLAN X and SVI VLAN Y to 9216?
2. Change MTU for VLAN Z and SVI VLAN Z to 9216?
3. DO I need to change MTU sizes for other VLANs that are on TRUNK port?

I have an existing site-2-site VPN between a Cisco 2621 router (IOS 12.3) and Cisco 1841 (IOS 12.3) and I can ping packet size of 17000 over the IPSec tunnel without any issue:c2621#ping 192.168.230.254 source f0/1 repeat 20 size 17000,Type escape sequence to abort.Sending 20, 17000-byte ICMP Echos to 192.168.230.254, timeout is 2 seconds:Packet sent with a source address of 192.168.208.254!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Success rate is 100 percent (20/20), round-trip min/avg/max = 144/146/148 msc2621#I replaced the Cisco 2621 with a more powerful ASR 1002 running IOS version asr1000rp1-adventerprisek9.03.01.00.S.150-1.S.bin. However, I can not ping packet size larger than 9200 over the IPSec tunnel:Feb 24 02:42:52.362: %IOSXE-3-PLATFORM: F0: cpp_cp: QFP:00 Thread:015 TS:00000015834854465792 %IPSEC-3-PKT_TOO_BIG: IPSec Packet size 10072 larger than maximum supported size 9216 hence dropping it.Success rate is 0 percent (0/10)asr1002# Why is not working? I am trying to determin if Jumbo frames are enabled on out Nexus 7000, and I am getting mixed info back from the swtich.I looks like the system jumbo MTU size is 9216 by default, but the interfaces all say the MTU of the interface is 1500 bytes. According to this article, the interface MTU should read 9216 is the jumbo frames are enabled globally. Is this correct. Is there a way to verify if Jumbo frame support is turned on? [code]

We have a brand new 2 x 3750-X stack running 15.0(1)SE3 with C3KX-NM-10Gs installed in each switch. An HP C-Class server enclosure with Virtual Connect Flex-10 modules is connected to each of the 10G ports using twin ax cables and they seem to behave OK apart from some random packet drop which appears to be within the enclosure and not without.
However, when we were investigating this, we found a little oddity ... even though we have jumbo frame support enabled on the 3750-Xs, we are getting a significant "Valid frames, too large" received count on the interface, and a "Too large" transmitted count. I've looked around and can't find a definitive reason for this count to go up - it doesn't seem to be a jumbo frames thing, more an unexpected-additional-field-in-a-header type thing, like when you have a V LAN tag in a DTP frame. Any thoughts as to why I might be getting these from a new server enclosure?

I have an 1841 and started to run into an issue which can be resolved but looking to see what you guys prefer to do in this situation. We allow users to connect the laptop via ethernet and wireless to our network at the same time as well as an iPad or any other wireless technology. With that said, for the most part each user has two IP's at any given point. The issue comes in is that I have a large amount of IP exclusions for servers, printers, switches, etc on the exclude list. I am starting to see that the 255 address are not enough to make a long story short. I am also using the 1841 to handle another range for the voice network, which has no isues. What is the best way to fix this issue? Can I run a virtual VLAN off that 1841 for everyone to use and then have the servers, switches, printers, etc on another one? I want to assume no, as both interfaces are used on the back of the 1841 for the two VLANS running now. Or is the only way to handle this with this device to say that as a policy you can only connect assigned company hardware to the network?

We are migrating from Catalyst 6509 IOS platforms to Nexus 7009. There's the normal differences in commands which is well doucumented. We do have some quite large files containing ACLs varying from 10's of lines to several 1000's of lines. Our normal upload would be done using tftp and then issuing the command 'conf net' on the the 6509. This is no longer the way to do this on NX-OS. I've tried copy ftp: running-config which works fine for small files but for big ones it takes a long time, in some cases I've see it takes 20-30 minutes. The initilal tftp uplaod to the 7009 seems OK but the copy into the running-config is the bit that takes time and initially I thought I'd killed the 7009!! It did finally come back to the prompt. Are the 7009's simply not designed for large ACLs? I did try the configure session (Session Manager) but I couldn't see a way of uploading a file. I tried creating a new session and then exiting it, copying in a file of the same format and then commiting it but it didn't seem to acknowledge the file (checksum?).

A question concerning the use of REP for IE-3000-4TC switches:
In figure 14 of REP pdf URL can you explain why this creates a loop in the system? From the document, I thought REP and RSTP could talk to each other so why does this create a loop if they are exchanging information between each other? Also, if, in figure 14, the two switches in the STP domain that connect to the REP ring, were also connected to each other, would there still be a loop in the system?
Also, what is the recommended max diameter a REP ring should be. I thought I read some place 130 nodes is ok, but I'm looking to confirm this.

we have two 6509E, as our core switches. Recently I noticed that on some connections I have a high output queue drop rate.
These 4 x 2 interfaces (gigabit) are connected to our blade encolure, consisting of 4 x WS-CBS3120X-S. The utilization of the links is really quite low, when I see the increase of the drops. (~=60Mbps). All the links are fiber (SFP) and the distance between the core switches and the enclosure is about 15-20m.
I am not aware of any service degradation on the part of the servers. No CRCs, collisions etc, on the interfaces, apart from the drops.
The line card is a WS-X6748-SFP, but other interfaces don't seem to be experiencing any problems.

I have a new 3560G to set up a small network for a remote site. I configured the vlan and an SVI as the gateway. The switch is also the DHCP server for the LAN. I configured Gi0/2 as L3 port, connecting to the nearest neighbor. My network runs EIGRP so i advertised the routes into the EIGRP process. The switch forms EIGRP neighbors and learns all routes in the enterprise network. The problems I'm having now are: 1. The switch learns all routes in my enterprise LAN and can ping devices in the enterprise LAN, but I can’t ping any interface on the switch from the enterprise LAN. 2.

I set this up and I can ping all the gateways but never the hosts. I was hoping I could make these links between 6500's a mix of L2 and L3. Check it out. They are connected in a linear fashion R1--->R2--->R3. I can ping from R1 to R3's SVI4 gateway but I can never ping a host on that SVI4. I was hoping that I could use the port-channels between 6500's as routed links or as trunk links depending on the type of traffic....thought it would ease the migration. I suppose I could always get rid of the port-channels and just make separate L2 and L3 links between the 6500's.

I have been searching the message boards and wasn't having much luck. I am running some monitoring sessions on my 6509 and on the VLAN I am monitoring, I am experiencing a really large packet loss. If we hook up a laptop to the destination port and run wireshark we are seeing between 80% and 90% packet loss. I dont see the packet loss on the show port command, but I do on the show int vlan command.
The config is as follows:
Session 2
---------
Type : Local Session
Source VLANs :
RX Only : 500
[Code].....
I was doing some reading on Egress vs Ingress and I am wondering if the Egress SPAN replication state could be causing the packet loss that we are seeing or does the ingress & learn command override that?

The last few days I've been exploring options in getting rid of some old routers accross a wan connections. I have a cat 3560 to play with and I thought I would try and use the no switchport command test out routing with switch. I've got some type of route issue and I tried a few things which I thought would fix the issue but had no effect. I'll post the config and a few commands so you can see what the basic setup is.
Here we can see in the arp that it knows about both 10.7.1.2 (PC unable to ping 10.3.3.254) as well as 10.3.3.254 (ASA).I tried adding in a ip route of 10.7.0.0 255.255.0.0 10.3.3.110 as well as 10.3.3.254. Neither produced the results I wanted allowing 10.7.1.2 (PC) to ping the ASA (10.3.3.254). [code]

I have an environment of 3 X 3560G of which I have 1st switch-CORE(f0/10) connecting to the VPN router(CE) interface-f0/0. Remaining 2 Cisco 3560's(Access) are connected to Gi0/1 and Gi0/2 on the 1st switch-CORE via gi0/1 . On all three switches I have created multiple VLANs and assigned ports to these VLAN. The switch to switch connection is trunk allowing all VLANs created on all these 3 switches. Now the issue is how I am going to have all these VLANs routed through single interface on the routeri-e f0/0, as all these subnets will communicating to remote site over VPN. What should be default gateway on the 2 Access switches and the CORE switch, also what static route should be on router to reach all subnets(VLANs) created on these 3 switches.
I have read inter-VLAN routing i-e creating sub interfaces on router but dont want to proceed with that and looking for any other way to have my VLANs talk on all three switches and then are accessible to remote site ove VPN?

I have tried to make policy based routing on Cisco 3560. I use ipservices ios (SW version 12.2.(50)SE3 and SW-IMAGE C3560-IPSERVICESK9-M) For below configuration there is no problem and pbr is working.
“Access-list 100 permit ip host 1.1.1.1 host 2.2.2.2
Access-list 101 permit ip host 1.1.1.1 host 3.3.3.3
Route-map pbr1 permit 10
Match ip address 100
Set ip next-hop verify-availability 1.1.1.2 1 track 11
interface fasthethernet 0/1
ip policy route-map pbr1”
But when i add another sequence to the "pbr1" with another sequence number like that.
“Route-map pbr1 permit 11
Match ip address 101
Set ip next-hop verify-availability 1.1.1.3 1 track 12”
pbr is not working. Switch gives message "PLATFORM_PBR-3-UNSUPPORTTED_RMP:Route-map pbr1 not supported for Policy Based Routing”"ip policy route-map pbr1" command not shown in the running config. And "show ip policy" output is blank.Configuration guide says you have insert many sequence to the route-map with the same name. And also this command is not in the unsupported command list.

We recently purchased Cisco 3560X Layer3 Switch. We need to perform simple Inter VLAN routing. We have configured VLAN1 (name-server_vlan) and VLAN2 (name- user_vlan). We have also assigned the Ports and IP address to both the VLANs. After assiging this if we plug Laptop A into VLAN1 then it doesnt communicates with Laptop B (btw, Laptop A is able to Ping VLAN2 Gateway ) in VLAN2 but on the other hand Laptop B is able to communicate with Laptop A and ping everything i.e. Gateway of VLAN1.

I know the catalyst is L3 but I am needing nat functions to get outside to the internet. From my 2800 series router I am able to ping out to the internet, also I am able to ping the vlan interfaces on the catalyst switch. Problem is from the catalyst switch I can ping the inside and outside address of the 2800 but I cannot get any further then that. I cannot ping the 2800 router gateway. Not sure what I am doing wrong as far as routing.
I've attached my 2800 and 3560 configs.
