Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6509 Amber System Light On Both SUP32
Feb 20, 2012I have (2) Sup 32 configured in a 6509 chassis. I have 1 power supply plugged into the wall and 1 power supply that is not plugged into anything but it is in the chassis and has green light to show that it has been recognized.
My problem is the "system light" on both sup32 remains amber and does not turn green. I have done show modules and sh diagnostics and sh power and everything checks out OK. Also there is an amber light on "active" on the 2nd Sup32 which I am assuming means that it is in standby mode so that would be correct.
Q: My question is could it be the power supply that is not plugged into anything causing the "system light" to stay amber and not turn green?
Q: Will this amber system light on the Sup32 stop the 6509 from running as normal?

Sep 30, 2012I have 2 6509 chasis with one SUP720-3B in each and current IOS is s72033-ipservicesk9_wan-mz.122-18.SXF4 and 2 FWSM with version is 3.3.1 I need to upgrade FWSM system software to 4.1, after checking FWSM 4.1 release notes, I thought of upgrading IOS to latest version to 12.2(33)SXJ.I got new 2 CF of 512MB and downloaded the new IOS on them and need to upgrade 6509 IOS first to meet the requirement for FWSM upgrade.

Oct 3, 2007It is possible to detect situation when two neigbour routers involved in EIGRP routing are configured by mistake with different AS number ?I tried this situation practically. Two routers are connected together via Serial link network. One router has AS 1, other AS 10. I try to detect AS mismatch. First I check what EIGRP packet are comming debug ip packet detail show source <my neighbour IP address> destination 224.0.0.10 Ip protocol type 88. These packets are EIGRP Hello packet.
I try to go more deeply into details.debug eigrp packetsI see only ongoing EIGRP Hello packets. But I don't see any incoming packet from my neighbour (which has different AS number). It seems, because of different AS number router silently drop eigrp packet.Other debug eigrp command also doesn't show any info about AS difference.

Aug 2, 2012I have three Autonomous AP´s in a small office running voice applications, all of them are connected to the same infrastructure switch and they have same configuration, voice Vlan is configure to open authentication. I have two models of AP 1252 and 1262 and I paste Radio configuration below.
First issue: During calls users are facing problems when roaming between AP´s, and eventually calls are dropped.
Second issue: Sometimes one of these AP´s(1252) lose all transmit signal and when return I got authentication error on log.

I am keeping the four Sup720 modules and have purchased new versions of the others blades including two new 6509-E chassis?Can I take my stand-by Sup720 out of the production machine and insert it into the new chassis?

May 7, 2013I have a problem with DHCP. I have two 2960 connected with a port channel on ports 47 and 48 as trunk with native vlan 10. I only have this one vlan. In port 1 of sw 1, I have a C800 as DHCP server.
I have an AP autonomous with single ssid on vlan 10. When I connect the AP to sw1, I receive dhcp with no problems.When I connect the AP to sw 2, I’m not getting IP by DHCP.I have DHCP snooping working on vlan 10 on both devices.
The ports where I connect the AP are access ports on vlan 10 config as trusted.The trunk ports are also configured as trusted.The port 1 of ws 1 that goes to the C800 is also configured as trusted.
figure out why I’m not getting IP by DHCP when I connect the AP to the SW 2.The only I notice is that when I connect the AP to sw 2, I get on SW 1 the message of packet drop by option 82, but even after configuring ip dhcp snooping information option allow-untrusted on both switches, the problem persists.

Jan 14, 2013I've been experimenting with the 'vlan dot1q tag native' command on a switch and it seems as though tagging the native vlan breaks vty access to my access point.With the 'vlan dot1q tag native' commnand applied, I lose management connectivity to the AP with 'no vlan dot1q tag native' applied, connectivity is restored. Why is this? Is it safe to say that one can access the AP via vty lines using ONLY untagged packets?

May 27, 2013i recently bought a new Supervisor Engine 720 WS-SUP720-3B and 48-port 10/100/1000 RJ45 EtherModule WS-X6148A-GE-45AF. Once i fired it all up i got this error %C6KPWR-SP-4-UNSUPPORTED: unsupported module in slot 2, power not allowed: Unknown Card Type. the System image file is "bootdisk:s72033-ipservicesk9_wan-mz.122-18.SXE6a.bin".
I have a 6509 up and running the same mods and working fine BUT the System image file is sup-bootdisk:s72033-ipservicesk9-mz.122-18.SXF7.bin. Is the boot image what is causing my isses?

Jan 11, 2012we've had an issue with our network, we have 2 6509 connected with redundancy, which are connected with 2 x 4900 Switches, from which are connected to a ESX Chassis for visualization, the thing is that the ESX stopped working, and the 4900 switches, and the main core were suffering from overload, they hang on it very well, in order to stop the overload, one of the links to the ESX Chassis were disconnected from one of the 4900 switches. The CPU usage from the 4900 and the core(6509) went down below 40%, and then they started to migrate the virtual servers from the chassis to another 2 chassis that were added right after. They were actually working well, but suddenly the 6509 changed to the other supervisor after everything was OK. We were wondering what could have been the cause of this, maybe the virtual servers migrations, maybe the overload from the ESX ? We also had a few question, is there any need to reload the cores every few months as a planned task ? Because the cores have been up for more than 1 year. And also is there any kind of of tool to monitor the CPU status, or the status overall from the cores or the switches ?

Apr 11, 2012The have around 80 staff and I think the current infrastructure is overkill for the size of the company. The current kit is old and they have no GB ethernet ports. They currently have:-
Core Switch:
1x Cisco c6509with a 48 port fast ethernet module (WS-X6248-RJ-45)
and an 8 port fibre module (WS-X6408A-GBIC)
I'm looking to replace this with something with 72 ethernet ports and 8 fibre ports
Access Switches:
2x 3500Replacement needs at least 48 ports and 2 fibre modules each
and 2x 5500Replacement needs at least 72 ports and 2 fibre modules each.

I know it's possible to do a route-map match ip-address ACL list. But is it possible to match on gateway?
Some info about hardware and config:
6509-E in VSS (IOS 12.2(17r)SX5) withVS-S720-10G supervisor.
All routes are static, IP for 192.168.64.9 is on SVI vlan.

Mar 6, 2012I have two ISPs. Each is on it's own subnet connected to the 6509 MSFC/Switch. FW1 is on 100.1.100.0/30 and FW2 is on 200.1.200.0/30 subnet. My goal is route all traffice going to the Internet from subnet 10.133.3.0/24 to FW1 and all other subnets across the organization to FW2. I am not sure if I need to use ACL / Static route combo, or just a static routes or ACLS?

Maybe I can explain better:
I've got a Cisco 6509 with 4 configured vlan interfaces
Int Vlan 10 10.10.1.0/24
Int Vlan 20 10.10.2.0/24
Int Vlan 30 10.10.3.0/24
Int Vlan 40 10.10.4.0/24
Vlan "10" is the phone voip Vlan and it must not talk with the others Vlan. The others Vlan can comunicate normally except with Vlan "10".
Pratically Vlan "10" needs to be isolated from the others.
This equirement comes becouse Vlan 10 is wireless and has the WEP key encryption (very weak protocol). Some Phone couldn't support the WPA2 key and I need to avoid an unauthorized external client, cracking the WEP key and connecting to this WiFi, could have free access to the others Vlan.

Nov 14, 2012I have a problem on my catalyst 6509 on which I would like to do the following things :
I have some Vlans in which multicast is enabled.
In tose Vlan theres is a router which is default router for equipements.
I had enabled multicast routing because some Vlan needs to exchange multicast informations, but I wolud like to make difference between Multicast traffic. For example I have 5 vlans:
Vlan 1 and 2 need to exchange Multicast informations but the don't need multicast information from Vlan 3 and 4
Vlan 3 and 5 need to exchange Multicast informations but the don't need multicast information from Vlan 1 and 2
Vlan 5 is independant Vlan but doesn't need to have multicast information from all others vlan.
Last problem, equipement on differents vlan can use the same Mulkticast group address. In this case, Multicast routing is not working between Vlan 1 to Vlan 2 and Vlan 3 to Vlan 4.

Dec 7, 2010Recently I faced 1 issue in MLS 6509.MLS had all Gig modules in slots 6,7,8 taking System detected CRC error rate on port ASIC data bus exceed fatal threshold, ("System detected CRC error rate on port ASIC data bus exceed fatal threshold".) causing the module reset by the SUP. After this active SUP causing it to failover the standby. This process was continuing every few minutes resulting in the SUPs on MLS rolling.what could be the issue for Sup rolling reset?
