I would like to add a redundant supervisor to my core 6509. Is this tricky to do? I know they have to be running the same IOS. I am worried if I put the new supervisor in it will write over the exsisting running config.

we have 2 Supervisor IV modules in our 4507, i want to upgrade the IOS as its still on 12.2 and i am going to upgrade it to the latest.
my first question is, if i update the IOS on the bootflash will it replicate to the secondarybootflash?
secondly, can i force a reboot of the secondary supervisor, then the primary after the secondary is up? i'm just trying to minimise downtime and get a plan going.
is there a difference in 12 vs 15 that would impact my current config that i should be aware of?

There is a Cisco Catalyst 6513 in my office. Recently we decided to setup redundant Supervisor Engine 720-3B. When we did it, its became STANDBY COLD, and then it reloads. IOS is equal on both supervisors. It must be STANDBY HOT (SSO) redundancy. There is a configuration and show ver and show module outputs, and log of my actions.

The new SuperVisor engine for slot 1 came with CatOS 6.3 and was not syncronized auromatically after insertion. When the customer enter the command "Show boot" he get the output:

I know in the past on earlier models of the supervisors that you couldn't use all eight uplink ports(4 on each supervisor) simultaneously when you have two supervisors on the chassis. Is this the same case for the 10Gb uplinks on the supervisor 7-E on the 4500 chassis? I tried doing my research but couldn't find an answer.

If you upgrade the standby supervisor module to 8 GB of memory, you must then switch the active supervisor to standby and upgrade the new standby supervisor to 8 GB of memory.

We are trying to upgrade the IOS on one of our 6509 switches. We have two 720 10GE supervisors running in SSO. Our procedure is reload the standby supervisor with the new IOS. We understand that you can only use one console connection when in RPR mode so we rely on the active supervisor giving us information that the standby unit is up and running.
The problem we have is that when we do a "show Module" on the switch the online diagnostics for the standby supervisor comes back us unknown. [code] We believe the active supervisor can see the standby supervisor because when we save the configuration we get a message saying that the config is sync'd with the standby router. We have a TAC case raised to investigate. We are upgrading from 12.2(33) SXI1 to 12.2(33) SXJ3
I have configured the VSS in two cisco 6509-E series with only one supervisor engine, but if i configured with two supervisor engine. it is going to common mode. One supervisor engine is 3c and 3cxl.

At the moment the two supervisors are in SSO mode and after reading many articles it says that when the images are different on the two supervisors they are in RPR mode. When you then reload the active supervisor it will reboot all the line cards.
1. Is above correct? Will my line card reload?
2. We also have a FWSM installed, When/If the line cards are rebooted does the FWSM also reboot?

View 6 Replies View Relatedwe've had an issue with our network, we have 2 6509 connected with redundancy, which are connected with 2 x 4900 Switches, from which are connected to a ESX Chassis for visualization, the thing is that the ESX stopped working, and the 4900 switches, and the main core were suffering from overload, they hang on it very well, in order to stop the overload, one of the links to the ESX Chassis were disconnected from one of the 4900 switches. The CPU usage from the 4900 and the core(6509) went down below 40%, and then they started to migrate the virtual servers from the chassis to another 2 chassis that were added right after. They were actually working well, but suddenly the 6509 changed to the other supervisor after everything was OK. We were wondering what could have been the cause of this, maybe the virtual servers migrations, maybe the overload from the ESX ? We also had a few question, is there any need to reload the cores every few months as a planned task ? Because the cores have been up for more than 1 year. And also is there any kind of of tool to monitor the CPU status, or the status overall from the cores or the switches ?

I'm fairly new to networking and need to migrate an old core to a new core. I have a 6509-e Switch that I had an RMA on one of my 720 sup cards. After receiving the sup card I swapped my slave out with the new one, expecting it to boot into ios. It booted into Roman. I tried to boot the image manually and it did the same thing. I also tried to boot from my flash and, again, booted into ROMmon.
Question: If i configure and change the boot to boot from image it tells me i need to reset or power cycle first. Will this reset the entire switch? As this is production I'd rather not.
I am at home now, but I can supply any logs/hardware model/configs tomorrow. I thought I would see if this is an easy fix.
we have Supervisor Engine 720 10GE (VS-S720-10G) in slot 5 on Catalyst 6509-E. Slot 6 is free. We need to replace VS-S720-10G. Is it possible the following scenario
1. we will insert new VS-S720-10G into the slot 6
2. then we will remove the faulty VS-S720-10G from the slot 5

I have recetly upgraded our core switches (6509E) to SUP 2T from 32. Each core has 2 SUP's (hot/standby). out of 4 SUP engines, one is defective. i had received the new SUP from cisco. Currently my core swicth 2 is running with single SUP. Can i directly insert the new SUP engine in slot 6 (free)? will it automatically load the existing IOS from active SUP? what will happen if the new SUP has a different IOS other than the active SUP? Also is there a way to find out the IOS version without inserting in the chasy?

We have a 6509-e (WS-C6509-E V04) with (4) (WS-X6148-GE-TX) 48 port modules and a supervisor 32 (WS-SUP32-GE-3B).We purchased a supervisor 720 (WS-SUP720-3B) and (2) (WS-6708-10G-3C) 8 port fiber modules and (1) WS-X6748-GE-TX)48 port module to add to the switch. My question is what is the best way to swap out the supervisor module? Can the SUP720 be added as a standby module so that the config can be transferred? Probably a long shot. Is there anything in this swap that I should be concerned with? The other three modules should be pretty straight forward.

I'm currently in the process of evaluating potential equipment options for a Core Router/Switch that will be running BGP with several Tier 1 ISP's, the table download from each ISP will be full (300,000+ Routes). I was looking at a 6509-E with dual SUP720-3BXL supervisors but after reading the below link I'm a little concerned by the maximum routes table: [URL]
Do I have to go to the VS based 720 supervisor as a minimum to support full BGP on a 6509-E? Does any experience of the above switch + supervisor combination under a full BGP table, how well does it work? I'm looking at long term using this as a consolidated core (i.e. a VRF for the Global Internet routing table + a VRF for internal data center traffic, plus maybe some more shared VRF's).
Would I be better keeping a Core switch by itself and just buying edge routers to run BGP?
How to replace a defective redundant sup. I read on several articles that inserting new redundant sup should not be an issue as the active sup will always send its configuation to the standby. We are running SSO on the Sup720. Should I switch it to RPR before I install the redundant sup? I read a case wherein they switched it to RPR from SSO before inserting the new redundant sup. My concern is the IOS mismatch since Cisco doesn't always send the same IOS on RMAs.What I am planning is this.
1. Save/Backup configuration
2. Remove the redundant sup on slot 8 (since it is a 6513)
3. Insert the new redundant sup on slot 8.
4. Check if all the configurations were synced from slot 7 to slot 8.
5. Copy the IOS from sup-bootflash to slavesup-bootflash. (if the IOS are not the same)
6. Check show bootvar to see if the boot variables are correct.
7. If bootvar is the same, reload slot 8 to boot the new IOS.
Is this a good plan or am I missing something? I am worried with this document if the redundant sup has a different software. If i insert the card in slot8, according to Cisco, it will revert to RPR. If slot 8 boots and it has a different OS, then slot 7 will switch to RPR even if it's active. Would I still be able to access the slavesup-bootflash of slot 8? Is it going to boot 100%? I read that doing a force switchover will cause a flip and RPR would cause the line cards to reinitialize and I don't want that. Well I am not going to do a force switchover since i want slot7 to be active and retain slot 8 as hot.
Can 2 Cisco 4507E switches with redundant SUP6-E modules be connected togther using the the standard 10GB CX4 modules and CX4 copper cables? Are there any special modules or cables required.
