i recently deployed cat4507e switch along with 3 nos of WS-X4748-RJ45V+E - 48 port gigabit PoE modules. I am using polycom IP560 phones.
I am facing issue of some switch ports (randomly) stops supplying power to phone at random time. So far there are about 4 incident and i have been plugging those connection to different - usused ports. I am planning to RESET the switch module during weekend and i think it might fix issues with those ports.
But what would be quick and easy way to fix this issue when the issue is faced? How/what to check on switch port interface wrt to power? If switch module is falling short of overall power requirement, is there a way to boost the power?

A client asked this question. Below is how I responded:
Q: Will the NFFC for the 4500 series work with a SUP6-E/SUP6-LE?
A: NO.
I have never attempted to install one on a SUP6-E, but there is no documented capability of that SUP to do netflow, either natively or with a daughter card. I can NOT however find any explicit documentation stating it will not work – only lack of documentation stating it will.
Specifically, it will or will not work? I suspect "no" based on how difficult it is to find either component on the same page, but I simply don't know.

I have a 4506-E with the following supervisor module:WS-X45-SUP6-E
It currently has 2 TwinGig converter modules installed. I want to upgrade the 2 1Gb connections to 2 10Gb connections. First I took out the converter modules and installed 2 X2-10Gb-SR's, but it didnt recognize ("No X2 GBIC")???
Then, I put the converter module back in and put two SFP-10GB-SR's in them, but they don't recognize either...???? I"m running IOS
12.2(54)SG1.
According to the 10Gb matrix, they should work:
Catalyst 4500 series

I have a problem with x4648-rj45V+E module, which is not forwarding frames/packets in my 4507E switch. I have done the diagnostic and the module test is passed. When i try to ping from one PC to another in the flat network, icmp is not forwarding. Even i cannot see the mac addresses in the mac address-table. But i can ping to my management port in the sup module?

I have cisco 4510R L3 switch with installed 2 Sup on slot 5 and 6. the current active Sup is in Slot5 i want to make active Sup6 in slot 6 which is currently standby sup in chassis. Is there any way to make standby Sup to ACTIVE without reloading any of the Supervisor. however there is two way as per my understanding -
1. we can reload the active Sup so that standby Sup will take charge. - (redundancy reload shelf)
2. we can focefully switchover the state of Sup's by (redundancy forcefully swithover) but in above both cases reload will be performed by one of the supervisor. which i don't want.

A customer wants to get the back-plane load of a cat4506-e chassis with a sup6-E supervisory card.A would like to check how many bus are used on the backplane and if the command "sh envi chassis" is the good and only command to be used ?I'm not sur that there is only one bus on the cat4506-E as with a sup7 card the backbone speed can change.

How to replace a defective redundant sup. I read on several articles that inserting new redundant sup should not be an issue as the active sup will always send its configuation to the standby. We are running SSO on the Sup720. Should I switch it to RPR before I install the redundant sup? I read a case wherein they switched it to RPR from SSO before inserting the new redundant sup. My concern is the IOS mismatch since Cisco doesn't always send the same IOS on RMAs.What I am planning is this.
1. Save/Backup configuration
2. Remove the redundant sup on slot 8 (since it is a 6513)
3. Insert the new redundant sup on slot 8.
4. Check if all the configurations were synced from slot 7 to slot 8.
5. Copy the IOS from sup-bootflash to slavesup-bootflash. (if the IOS are not the same)
6. Check show bootvar to see if the boot variables are correct.
7. If bootvar is the same, reload slot 8 to boot the new IOS.
Is this a good plan or am I missing something? I am worried with this document if the redundant sup has a different software. If i insert the card in slot8, according to Cisco, it will revert to RPR. If slot 8 boots and it has a different OS, then slot 7 will switch to RPR even if it's active. Would I still be able to access the slavesup-bootflash of slot 8? Is it going to boot 100%? I read that doing a force switchover will cause a flip and RPR would cause the line cards to reinitialize and I don't want that. Well I am not going to do a force switchover since i want slot7 to be active and retain slot 8 as hot.

we have 2 Supervisor IV modules in our 4507, i want to upgrade the IOS as its still on 12.2 and i am going to upgrade it to the latest.
my first question is, if i update the IOS on the bootflash will it replicate to the secondarybootflash?
secondly, can i force a reboot of the secondary supervisor, then the primary after the secondary is up? i'm just trying to minimise downtime and get a plan going.
is there a difference in 12 vs 15 that would impact my current config that i should be aware of?

I know that the 6500 with a Sup 720 reserves power for a redundant 720. If there is no plan to install that redundant Sup, is there a means of releasing that reserved power? I know that one approach would be to insert a card into that slot to cut the reserve down, but I need to reclaim all of that power.

How ever there is no RPS in the system. At least not that I know of. There is only one power supply.

Nexus5k

Servers, hosts, etc..
We would like to add another Nexus5k to this topology. However, it has to be a zero downtime infrastructure add-on. When setting up the keep-alive, peer-link, vPC and vdc domain, will there be any upset in network traffic on the current N5k?Also, are the Nexus5k configurations synchronized or are they independent from one another? Before setting up the new 5k, should i configure it to teh 6509's, and vPC's to the Nexus2k's before setting up peer-link?

I have 2 6504's running HSRP as my core. They are each etherchannel'd to my Datacenter switch (3750 Stack) -- see image below. The problem i a having is with the etherchannel status:
Core1 PO11 status w (waiting)
Core2 PO11 status P(bundled)
DC11 PO48 status P -- but only to Core2 - the interfaces to Core1 are suspended. (See attached configuration documents) None of the devices have any information in the logs. I run this same configuration in my central location, but we are running Nexus 7000's. With the 6500's, do I need to split the port channels on the 3750 to allow them to negotiate the etherchannel? If I split the portchannels, are there any concerns? Should I expect to see the etherchannel status as P (Bundled) or H (Hot-Standby)?

There are two Cisco 4900M L3 switches and two Cisco 2960 L2 switches. I need to configure the two L3 switches to operate as a redundant pair, as the servers connecting to them are connecting using bonded interfaces, which can only have one default gateway. So these two L3 switches need to have the same Vlan interface 1, 2 and 3 IP's set onto them. How are the two L3 switches made aware of each other? via a normal trunk? Is there some special configration for configuring a mated/redundant pair of switches? or are they both just configured as though they were the same switch, but linked?

I'm fairly new to networking and need to migrate an old core to a new core. I have a 6509-e Switch that I had an RMA on one of my 720 sup cards. After receiving the sup card I swapped my slave out with the new one, expecting it to boot into ios. It booted into Roman. I tried to boot the image manually and it did the same thing. I also tried to boot from my flash and, again, booted into ROMmon.
Question: If i configure and change the boot to boot from image it tells me i need to reset or power cycle first. Will this reset the entire switch? As this is production I'd rather not.
I am at home now, but I can supply any logs/hardware model/configs tomorrow. I thought I would see if this is an easy fix.

I know in the past on earlier models of the supervisors that you couldn't use all eight uplink ports(4 on each supervisor) simultaneously when you have two supervisors on the chassis. Is this the same case for the 10Gb uplinks on the supervisor 7-E on the 4500 chassis? I tried doing my research but couldn't find an answer.

setting up VRF-lite on redundant 6509-E chassis to account for chassis failure? Let's say I have 2x 6509-Es configured with HSRP for 2 vlans, ServerA and ServerB. So
6509-A#
!
interface Vlan10
description ServerA VLAN
ip address 10.10.10.2 255.255.255.0
ip flow ingress
standby 1 ip 10.10.10.1
standby 1 priority 105
[code].....
I now need to create an environment where the Server VLANs can be provided for two customers and they need to be wholly separate. On 6509-A, I make VRF CustomerA and VRF CustomerB and I assign Vlan10 to VRF CustomerA and Vlan20 to CustomerB. Do I create the SAME VRFs on 6509-B with the same logic?

Does a portable RPS device either from Cisco or another manufacturer exists, that would allow you to move primary power for a switch without causing an outage? I realize that for the Catalyst 3560 for example, you can get an RPS 2300 or 675, but my understanding is that these are made for a more permanent installation, not to mention rather costly.
It looks like the RPS 675 is rather inexpensive after all, especially in the secondary market, but still rather large for toting around.
