Cisco Switching/Routing :: 7609 Slow RSTP Convergence

Nov 22, 2011

I have a 7609 with two LAG groups (Etherchannel not LACP) going to two separate devices that DO NOT participate in spanning-tree (Occam gear if you must know). I'm running 802.1w across the LAG groups but the convergence time is terrible! In essence, the 7609 is running spanning tree against itself (between the two blades). What can I do to fix my configuration?

If I disable the ports on the equipment connected to g1/17 & g1/18, it takes ~30 seconds for spanning tree to start forwarding on g2/17 & g2/18.When I bring the ports back up on the other side of g1/17 & g1/18 which are in a lag group, g2/17 & g2/18  immediately go into block mode while g1/17 & g1/18 start learning for another ~30 seconds!! Cisco Switching/Routing :: 4948 - RSTP Poor Convergence Time 30 Seconds

Dec 26, 2011

What's wrong with my config? If I shutdown a port or pull a link it takes ~30 seconds to converge.

I have set spanning-tree portfast default on the 4948's. Is it proper to set my uplinks on these switches (g1/1) to shared or does that disable RSTP?

Switch 1 & 2 are 4948's running 12.2(54)
Switch 1 & 2 are connected on port 43

Switch 1 port 1 is connected to the 7609 12.2(33) SRD5 on port g1/2 Switch 2 port 1 is connected to the 7609 on port g2/2

I have a host on Switch 1 port 42 for testing.

Cisco WAN :: Slow BGP Convergence With Catalyst 6500 Quad

I set up Catalyst6500 Quad-SUP VSS system.I have a problem with slow BGP convergence(80sec) on VSS switchover. Each chassis has a bgp peer and "bgp graceful-restart" is disabled.I investigated BGP behavior with "debug ip bgp events" and "debug ip bgp update".I found that BGP process waited a peer to reply until timeout and after the timeout BGP table was calculated.I guess this timer makes the convergence slow. How can I adjust this timer value ?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Catalyst 3750X Stacking Convergence Time?

Nov 14, 2011

convergence time in case of stack master will be switched over to other switch. In my understating, when the stack master will be switched over to other switch based on election algorithm, convergence time will be less than 10 second.

I tried to calculate concersion time during fail over testing but convergence time was 21 second. I think it is too long...

Expected reasons

・I configured Rapid Spanning tree protocol between L3 and L3. (But RSTP's convergence time is 2~3 second..)

but there is no spanning-tree support. this causes many more problems. so it is important to solve spanning tee at first.is it possible without downgrading this device?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 7609 For Switching / Based On LAN (VRRP / HSRP) Feature

Oct 18, 2011

I am facing an isssues with 7609 for LAN switching , based on  LAN (VRRP/HSRP) feature.Actually  we are having ES+ cards (on 7609) and we are using multiple groups(say  350 vrrp groups) running on the router . the routers are connected as router 1>>> mux(which is working as switches)>>> router2

my questing are

1.  does their will be "multicast packets" (for VRRP/HSRP group) "from backup  router to Master router", when in stable state( ie when Master and  backup are already chosen) , or the packet from backup to master should  be unicast.I know for sure, the packet from master to back is multicast packets denstination to Multicast IP packet and To MAC address.I am not sure but I think from backup to master it should be multicast

2. what is frequency of these packets( from backup to master)

3.  As i have multiper group on a single interface ( we are using q-in-q),  when the connectivity from router's is broken, then does all the groups  will muticast their active roll in the lan sengment "at once" or it will  be in a groups say 100 groups at once, and after few ms few 100's and  sone ( as is on OSPF or RIP)

we are in between troubleshooting I hope we get the ans( Actul problem we are seeing in the router's that we have 2 ports on active routers and 2 ports on standby router , but we are not seeing muticast on 1 port on standby router where as all other 3 ports are seeing multicast packets) [code]

Cisco WAN :: 7609-s Switching And Routing Path Not Match

Jun 13, 2012

I've Cisco7609-S with IOS 12.2(33)SRC2 met an issue is that "show ip route x.x.x.x" and "show ip cef x.x.x.x" shown next-hop is not actual switched next-hop.

For example, "show ip route 192.168.1.1" and "show ip cef 192.168.1.1" shown correct next-hop is 10.1.1.1, but the traffic destine to 192.168.1.1 actually not through 10.1.1.1, but always through the default route next-hop. Everything works normal after rebooted the router. Suppose it should caused by a bug? BTW, my Cisco7609 is runing BGP with ISP which received about 10K routes.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 7609 / Interface Traffic Is Far Less Than Its Capability

Feb 24, 2012

The top device of my network is cisco router 7609. There are two part subnet of my network, each part use same device type, same running-configs and same network topple: sw6506(to campus)--->sw3560(to buildings)<--->linksys sr324(to offices). IP addresses for manager vlan is 192.168.1.0/24.Suppose we name two part subnet as A and B. the problem is from 7609 I can telnet to every device of part A quickly, but when telnet to  each sw3560 of part B,it responses very slowly. And only sw3560 of part B are response slowly, other devices of part B are ok.If I telnet to linksys sr324 first, then from linksys sr324 telnet to the current sw3560, it's ok.I try to capture packets of manage vlan, but there seems no strange things in it.No users of part B report problems, it seems the network is running well. Compare two sw6506s, the only diffirent thing is, there are "overrun" count at each interface in use of  part B's sw6506. Each interface traffic is far less than it's capability, but it's "overun" count still increasing at working hours everyday.

Cisco WAN :: Unexpected Routing Behavior On 7609 Router

Dec 14, 2011

We have a lab network set up with a 7609 router as the central core.  Scenario:  Laptop with a SIP client.  In the lab is a session border controller that will route signaling and media to a SIP gateway with a call agent (172.23.112.201) and a media "handler" (172.23.113.6).  The call processing device will forward packets to an RF network (108.x.x.x) where an NCS cable modem sits.Call signaling works perfectly fine.  However, RTP traffic from the laptop to the NCS phone is getting routed incorrectly.  RTP traffic from the phone to the laptop works fine. [code]

Packet captures show the laptop to phone RTP packets are being routed back towards the corporate router.  These time out with ICMP TTL exceeded packets.  There are static routes for 172.23.113.0/27 to the optical interfaces that go to the SIP gateway.  Interestingly, I can ping an IP on the SIP gateway (not used for media, but is pingable) in that static range (172.23.113.1) just fine from the 7609 (i.e. it's not getting routed to the corporate router).  Unfortunately, the IP for the media endpoint on the SIP gateway is not pingable.  Config for the 7609 is attached.

How To Calculate Network Convergence Time In OSPF

Feb 2, 2012

I want to measure the the ospf convergence time on the given network topology (assume 5 nodes - partial mesh topology).I am using quagga software as routing software on linux box. Quagga is runnign fine and network is converged, able to see all the routes.. Quagga software is logging all the osfp information includign packets, state machines, etc.I am going to disconnect a link between node a to node b. and i want to measure the convergence time of the network. What is the network convergence time?My answer is, The time taken to reflect the topology change (link down/up, network condition change) to all the routers on the topology. Some routers(close by routers to the topology change) will get converged fast, and some routers(far away from the topology change) will have the higher convergence time. we have to take the highest convergence time of the router on the topology and we can says thats the ospf network convergence time.

Cisco :: Moving PVST To RSTP / LAN Environment?

Jan 23, 2013

Currently I'm with a pure Cisco shop, running every LAN Switched infrastructure (even in the HQ datacenter) with PVST+, I'm noticing in the documentation I've read and labs I've created that RSTP is... great, and I've observed that even the uplinkfast functionality seems to be build in by just enabling rapid-pvst. Of course I'll propose a migration plan, document the network, diagram it entirely and provide effective steps to implement the change, but that's assumed from any get'go.

Cisco :: RSTP Configuration - 14 Switches Interconnected In Ring?

I need to setup a layer 2 network consisting of 14 switches interconnected in a ring. Obviously, the design of 14 switches in a ring network is dumb, not here to debate that. Unfortunately, it HAS to be a ring. I've been researching the best way to configure RSTP for this. From everything I've read all I really need to do is configure Primary/Secondary root bridge in the center, and change the Maximum Age field to at least 16 seconds? From what I've read you want a minimum of 3 second buffer + 1 second for each hop due to message age being added by each switch hop?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3750E RACL Slow To Load

Apr 16, 2012

I am seeing on my 3750E series switches (WS-C3750E-48TD). I have multiple VLANs configured on here, one which is used as a 'workstation' VLAN. I have an inbound ACL applied to the VLAN interface *(int vlan 50 to be exact). This list is admittedly long at roughly 6000 ACE's. Now I just recently installed these switches as they replaced some 4507R switches which we moved to our new centralized DC. Here is the issue I am having. This same ACL was applied to the same VLAN interface on the 4507s when they were doing the work of the 3750s. What I used to be able to do was actually edit the ACL by removing it with no ip access-list extended WS-In and then followed up by the ip access-list extended WS-In ......and the lines I wanted in the ACL. I know I could use the line numbers to edit the ACL but this worked OK for me. When I would do this on the 4507R, the ACL was still applied to the interface but traffic never seemed affected by the removal and re-adding of the ACL. I did this by copying and pasting the ACL into a terminal window. It seemed as though on the 4507 the ACL was not compiled until the entire thing was in loaded in and therefore traffic was not processed by the ACL until the load was done

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Traffic Within 3750 Slow / But Fast Outside Of It

Jul 15, 2012

I have 2 new 3750g devices in a small environment.  switch1 acts as our collapsed core and has ip routing enabled, and is connected to a ASA 5510. There are 3 HP l2 switches connected to switch1 as well.   switch2 is simply a server switch.  switch1 and switch2 have a 2port etherchannel between them, and a vlan trunk carrying 4 vlan's.  traffic between any 2 hosts on switch2 (same vlan) are slow. (average 300Mbits/sec)  If I move one of those hosts to switch1, speeds increase by 3 times.  (average 900 Mbits/sec).  Additionally, traffic between any 2 hosts on switch1 are quick. testing is done with iperf as well as timing 1gig file transfers.

I don't see any errors or drops anywhere, and there are no other symptoms other than slow transfer beteween hosts on switch2. I just got 2 more of these 3750's to put in a 2nd site that we have, put a quick configuration on them, and have the same result.  Other than switch1 having ip routing enabled, the configs are pretty much identical.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 861 Router - Slow Internet Performance

Jul 21, 2012

I have a new 861 router which I have connected to my home broadband cable modem. Got it all working okay and I have access to the Internet but its not as fast as it is if I connect my laptop to the modem.

My Internet is 60mb (was 100 but I downgraded). When I cannot my laptop directly to the cable modem, I get 60mb download speed on speedtest.net If I connect the router's WAN port back to the modem then I roughly get about 40mb, sometimes even 50.

I do not have any IOS firewall configured on the router, just basic ACLs to stop SSH and TELNET from public networks. If I do enable firewall then my Internet connection halves itself. I have read around that this is the case with ios firewalls on these small routers so I've disabled the firewall but I still don't know why I cannot get full Internet speed.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 5020 - Slow Throughput Between Two VLANs

Feb 14, 2012

When transferring traffic between two VLANs my throughput rate seems to drop to about 1.5 - 3.0 megabits / second.

My setup is like this...

Two Nexus 5020 switches. (switch01 and switch02)
Two Nexus 2232PP fabric extender switches. (switch03 and switch04)
Two Dell R815s with Chelsio and Intel NICs. (host1 and host2)

The servers run Xenserver 6.0, but as part of testing with this I've tried installing RedHat 6.2, VMware ESX 5.0 (vsphere 5).

The issue occurs when using trunking and transferring data from one VLAN to another. Example...

VM1 is in VLAN401 with an IP address of 10.100.40.40. The VM is on Host1. VM2 is in VLAN402 with an IP address of 10.100.50.50. The VM is on Host2.

I've been using a network throughput tool called iPerf to test and I find that I can only get a throughput rate of about 3.0megabits.

If I switch VM2 to be in VLAN401 with an IP address of 10.100.40.41 I get a throughput rate of about 6.7gigabits/sec.

In the above scenario, I'm using a Layer3 interface on the Nexus 5020, but in production we use a Vyatta virtual firewall.

I worked with Citrix for about 3 months and that was a dead end.
