Cisco Switching/Routing :: 7609 / Interface Traffic Is Far Less Than Its Capability

Feb 24, 2012

The top device of my network is cisco router 7609. There are two part subnet of my network, each part use same device type, same running-configs and same network topple: sw6506(to campus)--->sw3560(to buildings)<--->linksys sr324(to offices). IP addresses for manager vlan is 192.168.1.0/24.Suppose we name two part subnet as A and B. the problem is from 7609 I can telnet to every device of part A quickly, but when telnet to  each sw3560 of part B,it responses very slowly. And only sw3560 of part B are response slowly, other devices of part B are ok.If I telnet to linksys sr324 first, then from linksys sr324 telnet to the current sw3560, it's ok.I try to capture packets of manage vlan, but there seems no strange things in it.No users of part B report problems, it seems the network is running well. Compare two sw6506s, the only diffirent thing is, there are "overrun" count at each interface in use of  part B's sw6506. Each interface traffic is far less than it's capability, but it's "overun" count still increasing at working hours everyday.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 7450 / ASR901 Only Support MSTP In The EVC Configuration?

Jun 20, 2012

I have RSTP rings consisting of Alcatel 7450's and Foundry FES switches.  I want to insert Cisco ASR901's into these rings and have been testing in the lab.  It appears that the ASR901's only support MSTP in the EVC configuration.  So I would prefer to keep RSTP on the Alcatel and Foundry's and enable MSTP on only the ASR901's.

Topology is:7450-2 <=> Foundry-2 <=> ASR901-2 <=> Foundry-1 <=> ASR901-1<=> 7450-1 with a VPLS between the 7450's.

If I enable MSTP in the Foundry's, Alcatel and ASR901 everything works fine.  If I keep RSTP on the Foundries and 7450's, then STP also works, with the exception of a Foundry-2 switch running RSTP, that is located between 2 ASR901's running MSTP.  This switch does not seem to interact with the other switches (i.e. thinks it is the root bridge).Since there are mulitple MSTP boundary's, do the ASR901's need to be in different IST's/instances?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3750 - MSTP Design And Network Diameter Limitation

Jan 25, 2011

I am just browsing and looking for a solution to converge my multi-vendor switched network and bring some redundancy to it as recently
we managed to get a redundant links. I have a need to change core switch to Cat3750G, which has Per-V LAN-RSTP+ on board, but tests have shown that it won't be compatible with some other proprietary per-V LAN RSTP solution other vendor's switches use currently.

So, I thought maybe standard-based MSTP design might do the trick. I've made some tests and got some weird and unstable switching result. I have two topology rings with a core switch in the center. Every ring has about 10 switches, so practically network diameter may vary from 5 switches (when spanning-tree converges in the center and I have a blocking port somewhere int the middle of the ring) to about 10-11 switches (if a I have link failure on any of ports right at the core switch). I disconnected one port from core switch to eliminate a possible switching loop while I will be configuring new MSTP design. Then I started enabling MSTP on all the switches staring from core Cat3750G to MSTP, one by one, placing all switches to the same MSTP region, and placing all V LAN's to default MSTI0(CIST) cause I don't need to organize any separate MSTP instances for every V LAN or for group of V LAN s. When I turned MSTP on on 7th or 8th switch in the chain (cause I had a physical chain when I disconnected one port out of redundant ring) I got all switches "flapping", storming and flooding the network with broadcasts. Even when I had one redundant port disabled.

I have no idea what I am doing wrong. I noticed that Cat3750G has an option that defines a possible network diameter which actually automatically changes some hello, max age etc. attributes according to diameter specified. When I defined a maximum network diameter of 7, if didn't change anything: I still have hello timer of 2 sec etc. I've been wondering if the maximum network diameter has something more than just a "variable" to fine tune hello timers etc? Maybe I won't be able to use MSTP in my network which might have diameter more that 7 switches. Or maybe it was a mistake of placing all the switches to the same region and all the v LAN s to the default MSTI0 (CIST) and I should configure one MSTI per V LAN or per some group of V LANs and subdivide my switches to few MSTP regions?

My topology briefly looks like this:

+--SW1----SW2----SW3---CORE---SW4---SW5--SW6---+
|                                            |           |                                         |
+---SWxx---SWxx-----------+           +------SWxx-----SWxx----+

As I said, each "ring" has about 10 switches connected side by side.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 7609 For Switching / Based On LAN (VRRP / HSRP) Feature

Oct 18, 2011

I am facing an isssues with 7609 for LAN switching , based on  LAN (VRRP/HSRP) feature.Actually  we are having ES+ cards (on 7609) and we are using multiple groups(say  350 vrrp groups) running on the router . the routers are connected as router 1>>> mux(which is working as switches)>>> router2

my questing are

1.  does their will be "multicast packets" (for VRRP/HSRP group) "from backup  router to Master router", when in stable state( ie when Master and  backup are already chosen) , or the packet from backup to master should  be unicast.I know for sure, the packet from master to back is multicast packets denstination to Multicast IP packet and To MAC address.I am not sure but I think from backup to master it should be multicast

2. what is frequency of these packets( from backup to master)

3.  As i have multiper group on a single interface ( we are using q-in-q),  when the connectivity from router's is broken, then does all the groups  will muticast their active roll in the lan sengment "at once" or it will  be in a groups say 100 groups at once, and after few ms few 100's and  sone ( as is on OSPF or RIP)

we are in between troubleshooting I hope we get the ans( Actul problem we are seeing in the router's that we have 2 ports on active routers and 2 ports on standby router , but we are not seeing muticast on 1 port on standby router where as all other 3 ports are seeing multicast packets) [code]

Cisco WAN :: 7609-s Switching And Routing Path Not Match

Jun 13, 2012

I've Cisco7609-S with IOS 12.2(33)SRC2 met an issue is that "show ip route x.x.x.x" and "show ip cef x.x.x.x" shown next-hop is not actual switched next-hop.

For example, "show ip route 192.168.1.1" and "show ip cef 192.168.1.1" shown correct next-hop is 10.1.1.1, but the traffic destine to 192.168.1.1 actually not through 10.1.1.1, but always through the default route next-hop. Everything works normal after rebooted the router. Suppose it should caused by a bug? BTW, my Cisco7609 is runing BGP with ISP which received about 10K routes.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 7609 Slow RSTP Convergence

Nov 22, 2011

I have a 7609 with two LAG groups (Etherchannel not LACP) going to two separate devices that DO NOT participate in spanning-tree (Occam gear if you must know). I'm running 802.1w across the LAG groups but the convergence time is terrible! In essence, the 7609 is running spanning tree against itself (between the two blades). What can I do to fix my configuration?

If I disable the ports on the equipment connected to g1/17 & g1/18, it takes ~30 seconds for spanning tree to start forwarding on g2/17 & g2/18.When I bring the ports back up on the other side of g1/17 & g1/18 which are in a lag group, g2/17 & g2/18  immediately go into block mode while g1/17 & g1/18 start learning for another ~30 seconds!! Cisco Routers :: RV180 - Subnet Calculation In Static Routes And Routing Table

Jan 3, 2013

I've been playing around with the Cisco RV180s for a while now and have come across a problem with the subnet calculation in the static routes and routing table. Essentially, if I configure up a static route for a /16 it's entered in the routing table as a /13. If I add a /24 it's entered in the routing table as a /16. I haven't tested every subnet size and combinations but this looks like a fairly fundamental maths bug.

As a side note, I notice that the 1.0.1.9 release notes state the removal of SSH Server, however, I can not find any reference to it's existance prior to 1.0.1.9, did/does it exist in 1.0.0.30 and if so where? .

Screenshots are below and an extract from the configuration file for reference.

From the config file:

route = {}
route[1] = {}
route[1]["active"] = "1"
route[1]["dstIpAddr"] = "8.8.0.0"
route[1]["gwIpAddr"] = "192.168.1.250(code)

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3750E / Applying ACLs When Routing Between SVI And Routed Interface?

Mar 12, 2013

Quick question here. Using 3750E series switches with multiple VLANS configured. These switches serve as our 'core'. I have SVIs configured for the different VLANs and add inbound ACLs in each of the SVIs to control traffic between VLANS. This switch also terminates a P2P Ethernet link which connects to our Colo facility. The port used for this is configured as an L3 port. I noticed today that I was able to send traffic across this L3 link that I thought should have been blocked by an ACL I had in place but it wasn't. So the traffic flowed from a port in say VLAN 20 across this L3 link (assigned with an IP address). Would this traffic flow not cause traffic to be checked against an ACL applied in the inbound direction on the SVI of VLAN 20 (int vlan 20)? Traffic does get checked when routing between SVIs. Why would it not get checked when routing between SVI and L3 interface?

Cisco WAN :: Unexpected Routing Behavior On 7609 Router

Dec 14, 2011

We have a lab network set up with a 7609 router as the central core.  Scenario:  Laptop with a SIP client.  In the lab is a session border controller that will route signaling and media to a SIP gateway with a call agent (172.23.112.201) and a media "handler" (172.23.113.6).  The call processing device will forward packets to an RF network (108.x.x.x) where an NCS cable modem sits.Call signaling works perfectly fine.  However, RTP traffic from the laptop to the NCS phone is getting routed incorrectly.  RTP traffic from the phone to the laptop works fine. [code]

Packet captures show the laptop to phone RTP packets are being routed back towards the corporate router.  These time out with ICMP TTL exceeded packets.  There are static routes for 172.23.113.0/27 to the optical interfaces that go to the SIP gateway.  Interestingly, I can ping an IP on the SIP gateway (not used for media, but is pingable) in that static range (172.23.113.1) just fine from the 7609 (i.e. it's not getting routed to the corporate router).  Unfortunately, the IP for the media endpoint on the SIP gateway is not pingable.  Config for the 7609 is attached.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Interface Counters On 881

May 15, 2012

I notice strange input rates on the interfaces of a 881 router:

show int fa4
..
  MTU 1500 bytes, BW 100000 Kbit/sec, DLY 100 usec
..
  30 second input rate 85000 bits/sec, 11 packets/sec
  30 second output rate 16000 bits/sec, 9 packets/sec
     221434 packets input, 287889736 bytes
..
..
   142286 packets output, 15683576 bytes, 0 underrun

How can 11 packets/sec be 85000 bits/sec -- average packet size of 8KB?. The total packets input (221434 packets versus 287+ MB) also shows this kind of a 10KB+ average packet size.  There is ahardly any traffic through the router when the above snapshot was taken so 11 packets/sec sounds right, but not the 85Kbits/sec.

The router is running c880data-universalk9-mz.151-4.M4.bin and config is simple with a single Vlan (inside NAT) with a public IPs on fa4 and a couple of IPs for dynamic NAT. Everything works fine except for these interface counters that look worng.

I've tried to create a management profile to 'allow all from everywhere' basically, but still no luck.I'm completely stumped.  I've tried to reset to firmware defaults, and I'm now runinng the latest firmware. I woudl suppose that the switch would allow itself to be managed via the web interface from all subnets by default. Any thoughts?  The fact that the switch can ping internet hosts makes be believe it's own default gateway and IP are all ok and working.. (and I can ping it from anywhere in my network).
