Cisco WAN :: Unexpected Routing Behavior On 7609 Router

Dec 14, 2011

We have a lab network set up with a 7609 router as the central core.  Scenario:  Laptop with a SIP client.  In the lab is a session border controller that will route signaling and media to a SIP gateway with a call agent (172.23.112.201) and a media "handler" (172.23.113.6).  The call processing device will forward packets to an RF network (108.x.x.x) where an NCS cable modem sits.Call signaling works perfectly fine.  However, RTP traffic from the laptop to the NCS phone is getting routed incorrectly.  RTP traffic from the phone to the laptop works fine. [code]

Packet captures show the laptop to phone RTP packets are being routed back towards the corporate router.  These time out with ICMP TTL exceeded packets.  There are static routes for 172.23.113.0/27 to the optical interfaces that go to the SIP gateway.  Interestingly, I can ping an IP on the SIP gateway (not used for media, but is pingable) in that static range (172.23.113.1) just fine from the 7609 (i.e. it's not getting routed to the corporate router).  Unfortunately, the IP for the media endpoint on the SIP gateway is not pingable.  Config for the 7609 is attached.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: C3560 / Unexpected Behavior With SSH?

Feb 5, 2012

I have a weird situation with some switches.

Switch .55 can ssh into Switch .57 but cannot ssh into Switch .56.
Switch 56 can ssh into Switch 55 and ssh into Switch 57
Switch 57 can ssh into Switch 55 and ssh into Switch 56

The software on .56 is:

C3560 Software (C3560-IPBASEK9-M), Version 12.2(55)SE3, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

I noticed on .56, when I do a show ip ssh I get: SSH Enabled - version 1.5. It doesn't say version 1.99 like the others even when I configure version 2. Is this a bug I am running  into?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 2960-S Possible Switch Behavior When QoS Is Not Enabled

Document at url... is quite interesting,One of these goes about the behavior of a switch (2960-S and 3750G) when QoS is not enabled vs the one when QoS is simply enabled with "mls qos".What additional commands, beside "mls qos", would be needed so as to simulate as accurately as possible the switch's behavior when QoS is not enabled?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6500 Unexpected Packets On Port

Apr 17, 2012

i have several cisco 6500 switches, and user switched connected to them.in my example i have a global service vlan, where some access ports are directly connected on the 6500, and this vlan is also allowed on the trunks to the access switch.

now i am connected with ma laptop on a access switch, where my port is in the same vlan. when i do a show mac address-table on my access port, i can see my own mac-address, nothing else.when i start wireshark to see the traffic, all i should see is traffic from or to my MAC, or broadcasts/multicasts.

But i can see other unicast traffic with different source/destination mac than mine.It seem slike these packets get broadcasted over the whole VLAN, but its no broadcast MAC nor IP.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Unexpected Traffic On Nexus 5000 Trunk Port?

Feb 6, 2013

So I took a laptop with wireshark and plugged it into a nexus 5000 port that is configured as a trunk with 3 vlans allowed on it. The laptop was seeing all kinds of traffic on the wire, most of it was not involving my laptop.

For example: Server A VLAN 10= 10.10.10.1  Server B VLAN 20= 10.20.20.1 and wireshark laptop is plugged into a trunk port which is allowing those vlan's. The vlan's are routable.

10.10.10.3 is seeing the entire conversation when 10.10.10.1 backs up 10.20.20.1 even though it has no reason to see it. It is as if the trunk is spanning traffic to the laptop port. No span is setup however. It's really weird. This is not just broadcast traffic, but actual tcp taffic between Server A and B. Why would a trunk port see traffic between 2 other servers talking to each other on the vlan.

Trunk port configuration below:

Interface Ethernet 141/1/3
switchport mode trunk
switchport trunk allowed vlan 10, 20

Linksys Wireless Router :: EA3500 - Unexpected Error 2120?

Jan 16, 2013

Couple weeks ago installed my ea3500. Am loving its ease of use and features. I also created a smart wifi account. yesterday I tried to remotely log in and got password errors. I have tried all my small arsenal of staple passwords. No go. Today I called Linksys for support. After getting transferred around then having to explain the difference between router local and online passwords, the customer service rep had me create a new account telling me I had not previously done so. Also said if I had, then I wouldnt be able to create another since a router can only have one account associated with it. What the heck, worth a try.

Now, when I try to log in to the web based settings I get 'Unexpected Error 2120.' If i try to log in from my SmartWifi iphone app I get 'No associated networks. the linksys smart wifi account specified does not have associated networks.'

Just to clarify, I can log in locally to the router, but cannot via my smartwifi account.

Cisco WAN :: 7609-s Switching And Routing Path Not Match

Jun 13, 2012

I've Cisco7609-S with IOS 12.2(33)SRC2 met an issue is that "show ip route x.x.x.x" and "show ip cef x.x.x.x" shown next-hop is not actual switched next-hop.

For example, "show ip route 192.168.1.1" and "show ip cef 192.168.1.1" shown correct next-hop is 10.1.1.1, but the traffic destine to 192.168.1.1 actually not through 10.1.1.1, but always through the default route next-hop. Everything works normal after rebooted the router. Suppose it should caused by a bug? BTW, my Cisco7609 is runing BGP with ISP which received about 10K routes.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 7609 / Interface Traffic Is Far Less Than Its Capability

Feb 24, 2012

The top device of my network is cisco router 7609. There are two part subnet of my network, each part use same device type, same running-configs and same network topple: sw6506(to campus)--->sw3560(to buildings)<--->linksys sr324(to offices). IP addresses for manager vlan is 192.168.1.0/24.Suppose we name two part subnet as A and B. the problem is from 7609 I can telnet to every device of part A quickly, but when telnet to  each sw3560 of part B,it responses very slowly. And only sw3560 of part B are response slowly, other devices of part B are ok.If I telnet to linksys sr324 first, then from linksys sr324 telnet to the current sw3560, it's ok.I try to capture packets of manage vlan, but there seems no strange things in it.No users of part B report problems, it seems the network is running well. Compare two sw6506s, the only diffirent thing is, there are "overrun" count at each interface in use of  part B's sw6506. Each interface traffic is far less than it's capability, but it's "overun" count still increasing at working hours everyday.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 7609 Slow RSTP Convergence

Nov 22, 2011

I have a 7609 with two LAG groups (Etherchannel not LACP) going to two separate devices that DO NOT participate in spanning-tree (Occam gear if you must know). I'm running 802.1w across the LAG groups but the convergence time is terrible! In essence, the 7609 is running spanning tree against itself (between the two blades). What can I do to fix my configuration?

If I disable the ports on the equipment connected to g1/17 & g1/18, it takes ~30 seconds for spanning tree to start forwarding on g2/17 & g2/18.When I bring the ports back up on the other side of g1/17 & g1/18 which are in a lag group, g2/17 & g2/18  immediately go into block mode while g1/17 & g1/18 start learning for another ~30 seconds!! Cisco Firewall :: 5520 - Different DMZ Behavior After Upgrade To ASA 8.4(4)

May 23, 2012

I upgraded a pair of ASA 5520s from ASA 8.3 to ASA 8.4(4) this week and now my DMZ hosts cannot reliably communicate with eachother. I have a DMZ network of 10.20.20.16/28 configured. 10.20.20.17 is the ASA/Gateway and 10.20.20.19 is one host and 10.20.20.20 is another host. These two hosts had no problem communicating with eachother before the upgrade. Now, they usually cannot communicate with eachother. Occasionally they can communicate, but only for a few minutes. What is strange is I never had any access lists for these hosts to talk with eachother before the upgrade (because their traffic to eachother should have never reached the firewall) but now I needed to create an access list on the DMZ interface allowing these two hosts to talk. ICMP works fine, but only if the ACL is in place. TCP rarely works.

Cisco :: Behavior Of Routers When Overhead Is Added On Packet?

Jun 5, 2012

I am researching on the behaviors of routers when MTU is increased beyond the MTU set in the routers. Also, when I use jumbo frames instead of normal MTU, how does it affect the network. So, what I plan to do is

LAN_A -- > blackbox --> WAN --------> WAN --> blackbox --> LAN_B

All the traffic coming from LAN_A will be of size 1500 Bytes or less. The blackbox in the center will add an overhead of 4 bytes, recalculate the CRC and transmit the packet on the WAN side. I wanted to know that:

1- if my LAN router and WAN router, both are set at 1500 MTU, then will WAN router drop the packet if it receives a packet greater than 1500B ?

2- If i keep my LAN side to 1500 MTU and I switch my WAN router to Jumbo frames, how will this configuration affect the complete network ? Will it work or not ?

3- I want to add the overhead on every packet coming in from LAN side, so, what options do I have to achieve this goal ?

PS. All types of traffic can come from LAN side.

Cisco VPN :: ASA 5520 - Different Behavior For Web Deployment Of AnyConnect Essentials

Apr 16, 2012

We have instructed our user community to start their VPN sessions by connecting to our ASA 5520 with a browser to download (if necessary) and initiate the Anyconnect essentials VPN client.  Everything was working fine until a few days ago.

We have had several people report the same problem.  They connect with the browser, enter their login information and are greeted with our "authorized use only" message by the ASA.  Then, instead of downloading (if necessary) and starting the VPN client software, the web page just goes back to the login prompt without displaying any error message.  The client software is never downloaded or started.

We've been able to work around this by installing the client software manually (where necessary) and starting the VPN client from the start menu.  However, this isn't our preferred solution because this method won't have them automatically picking up updated versions of the VPN client.

We have seen this behavior before when there was a pending Java update that had not been applied.  However, that doesn't seem to be the case this time.  Clients have recently updated to IE9, but I have personnally been running the Anyconnect client and launching through IE9 for months.

Cisco Firewall :: ASA 8.2 Security-level Default Behavior

Nov 16, 2012

I'm trying to implement some best practices for ASA running on Software Release 8.2 and had a question about the default security-level behavior. Let's say I have 3 interfaces...

-inside (security-level 100)
-dmz (security-level 50)
-outside (security-level 0)

I have an ACL on the inside interface allowing http access to anywhere. Because of the ACL, the implicit higher to lower security level access is nullified. Correct?

I do NOT have any ACL on the dmz interface applied. So, would the servers in the dmz be allowed outbound access to the Internet due to the default higher to lower security level behavior?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 7609 For Switching / Based On LAN (VRRP / HSRP) Feature

Oct 18, 2011

I am facing an isssues with 7609 for LAN switching , based on  LAN (VRRP/HSRP) feature.Actually  we are having ES+ cards (on 7609) and we are using multiple groups(say  350 vrrp groups) running on the router . the routers are connected as router 1>>> mux(which is working as switches)>>> router2

my questing are

1.  does their will be "multicast packets" (for VRRP/HSRP group) "from backup  router to Master router", when in stable state( ie when Master and  backup are already chosen) , or the packet from backup to master should  be unicast.I know for sure, the packet from master to back is multicast packets denstination to Multicast IP packet and To MAC address.I am not sure but I think from backup to master it should be multicast

2. what is frequency of these packets( from backup to master)

3.  As i have multiper group on a single interface ( we are using q-in-q),  when the connectivity from router's is broken, then does all the groups  will muticast their active roll in the lan sengment "at once" or it will  be in a groups say 100 groups at once, and after few ms few 100's and  sone ( as is on OSPF or RIP)

we are in between troubleshooting I hope we get the ans( Actul problem we are seeing in the router's that we have 2 ports on active routers and 2 ports on standby router , but we are not seeing muticast on 1 port on standby router where as all other 3 ports are seeing multicast packets) [code]
