Cisco Switching/Routing :: WS-6509 / VoIP Phones Random Outage?

Jan 2, 2012

All of our VoIP phones bounced (re-registered) in the middle of the work day and we do not know why. There is no maintenance going on at this time. The phones came back up right away. Upon further investigation, I only found one error message on our core switch (WS-6509 running IOS ver. 12.2(18)SXF13) and I'm wondering if that was the cause:

Jan  3 13:51:04.030: %SIBYTE-SP-5-SB_OUT_OF_RX_DSCR_CH1: Out of RX descriptors on mac 0 - channel 1 (count: 299)

I cannot find any other instances of this error message from the internet.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 2975 Not Handing Out PoE Power To Phones And Access Points At Random Times

Oct 22, 2012

We currently have around 150 2975 switches and have had problems with it them not handing out PoE power to the cisco phones and access points at random times.  There is plenty of power left for the switch to use.  We have at least 15 that will be running fine for about a week and then all of the devices that use PoE power will shut off and will not come back on until we reload the switch.  If you console in there aren't any messages that pop up and if you look at the port it just shows on connected or will show IeeePD in the power inline.  We have contacted Cisco TAC and they just RMA them.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6509 / 720 Sups Random ROMmon Boots

Dec 27, 2012

Got a long lingering, year long issue that has spanned about 8 supervisor cards and a complete chassis swap. The 6509 acts as a ITN in our facility. The active sup card at random points of pipe usage boots into rommon mode, seriously inhibiting our company. I'm able to swap the 2 fiber pairs that we had going into the active supervisor card into the secondary and usually this works for another random amount of time, however, today it occured within minutes of hooking up the fiber links. Sitting there for about 5 minutes it booted into ROMMON. When this happens, I'm able to boot the sup card back to good status. Previous remedial actions, other than replacing sup cards/chassis, was checking the config register and making sure it was x2102. Previously, it was not, and we corrected and reloaded and it took, we thought this would fix the problem, until today.

2620 - 79xx Series VOIP Phones

Jun 10, 2012

I have some 79xx series VOIP phones that are acting VERY strange ... if you are familiar with these series phones once plug them into the PoE switch they look for a TFTP server with the call manager files to acquire all the info they need to work .... i have them set up on a 2620xm router running IOS c2600-ipvoicek9-mz.124-15.T14 along with call manger 4.3. My router is my TFTP server and i have hooked up and fixed over 50 of the same series phones with out a problem.

Now here is my issue ... when you goto press the SETTINGS button on the phone you are allowed to go into the settings of the phone to change all the ROUTER,TFTP,ETC info to allow you to connect your phone to the CALL MANAGER or you can set up DHCP and it will acquire the info automatically. When i press the SETTINGS button nothing happens .... i can reset the phone to factory defaults by holding the # button then 12345678*0# then 2 not saving the info and i can hit the restart buttons which is * 6 SETTINGS buttons together and that will let me restart the phone but i cannot manually set up this phone to do anything .. it will not acquire info form my DHCP server and will not find my TFTP server at all =( the phone SETTINGS BUTTON does not respond at all ..only when restarting the phone.

Cisco Routers :: Voip With SRP547W And SPA303 Phones?

Oct 28, 2012

I have an SRP547W hooked up as the office router with the standard office phones connected via the telephone ports at the back of the unit using 2 SIP lines as well as the PSTN by dialling hash first. We have just added a new staff member and bought an SPA303 with the intention of connecting it through registered SIP lines on the SRP547W, and hopefully have the facility to use the PSTN line when the SIP lines are busy.

The problem is, it connects to VLAN100 and gets its IP address and initializes fine however no lines show as configured and it can't make or receive calls. What do I need to configure on the SPA303 to tell it to use the SRP547W as its SIP Server/Proxy (not sure of the terminology).

Time Outs On LAN - VoIP Phones Have A Delay Internally?

Oct 6, 2011

A couple of users on my network complain about timeouts. They access the same server which runs a SQL server. People from outside world can access it without a problem but internally it keeps timing out. I have also noticed that VoIP phones have a delay internally. So if i pickup my phone and dial an extension the other person can't hear me sometimes but i can hear him.

I have experienced the VoIP problem but have never had any time outs on my machine. I tried packet capture on a couple of computers but i cant see anything out of the ordinary. Alot of ARP, some STP which i think shouldn't reach the machines, dropbox traffic etc.

Cisco Switches :: SG200-50 VLAN For VoIP Phones Connected To SRP541W Router

Apr 15, 2013

I am new to VLANs although I generally understand the concept.  I have a small office with 25 desktop/laptops and 15 VoIP phones connected with a SG200-50 switch and on Port 1 I have the Cisco SRP541W router for DHCP and Internet access.  My goal is simple: 1) Segregate the VoIP phones (voice) from the computers (data) and 2) Prioritize the VoIP phones traffic.

I believe this can be accomplished by setting up a second VLAN and maybe a third (if the default should not be used) and then identifying those ports as Voice VLAN ports.  I guess I just need to know how to flag each interface and each port so that they all can talk to the router on Port 1 yet the voice and data will be in different broadcast domains.  Also, do I need a management VLAN??

Is this setup correct? VLAN 1 - default (data) Port 1 (Trunk) (Tagged)Port 2 - 30 (Access) (Untagged)VLAN 2 - voice Port 1 (Trunk) (Tagged)Port 31 - 48 (Access) (Untagged) What should the interface settings be on each port (General, Access or Trunk)? What should the port VLAN membership be on each port (Tagged or Untagged)??

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3560G-48PS-S - PoE Lockout After Power Outage

Oct 27, 2011

We had some problems with 3560G-48PS-S switches and PoE for our phones. IOS is 12.2(50)SE3. There were some problems after power outage. The switches didn't reboot because we have two eletric circuits. But after the problems we had no PoE on all ports.

The switches logged to following syslog message:

%ILPOWER-3-CONTROLLER_PORT_ERR: Controller port error, Interface Gi0/17: Power Controller reports power supply VDD under voltage

I can't find any informations in the error message decoder for that. But there was another thread here with quiet the same message, but another problem regarding RPS2300.

After reloading the device all works fine again. The workaround with the commands "power inline never" and "power inline auto" I didn't know till today.

Some information about that syslog message?

My guess is that there was a voltage swing and the switch powered down its supply? Is that possible?

I put back the old router and all is fine which eliminates any cable or switch error. I have the router totally disconnect. I notice the configuration is in place.  My question is there any diagnostics that I can run to see if there is any hardware failure. It seems to boot up fine.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 400 Some IP Phones Are Not Getting Registered

May 13, 2012

I am  working in Private IT company. The facility is having 4000 users and it is a high resliency site having two core switches and nearly 40 access switches. All core and access switches are 4506E switches and odd vlan is taking core-1 and even vlan is core-2. We are having cisco ip phones 6921 connected as daisy chain.( Phone is connected to access switch and the desktop is connected to ip phones). The Ip phone are getting registered cisco call maneger server. The call manager one leg is connected to one core switch and another one is core 2 same like my DHCP server.

For all vlans the the default gateway is my firwall. The voice needs to hit the call manager, hence we have implemented a source routing to call manager for the voice vlans. the problem is once we down the Core-1 some of the IP phones are not getting registered no matterit is on odd or even vlan. The same issue for Core-2. We suspect that there might be some issue in the DHCP server for voice vlan routing. But server team is saying that there is no issue with the DHCP server.Now network is vulnerable that if any core switch is down my voice ip phones will be down.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 802.1x Clients Behind IP Phones

Jun 5, 2009

I have some Catalyst 3560 PoE switches running the latest 12.2(50)SE1 image.  I have a working configuration for STP, QoS, Voice & Access VLANs, Port-Security & IGMP snooping - I stress this is working PERFECTLY.  Now I have been playing with wired 802.1x port authentication for a while which again I have sucessfully deployed on ports without IP Phones.  I did some more testing with 802.1x clients behind some Cisco IP Phones and after understanding the issues and workarounds I thought I had a working environment.  The environment is XP SP3 with the new separate wired 802.1x supplicant, workstations are all in a 2003 AD Domain and the wired 802.1x settings are configured through group policy.  I had issues with Windows Server 2003 SP2 not working behind IP Phones but this I put down to the supplicant being different from the new one in XP SP3.  MS don't have any plans for Server 2003 SP3 (or XP x64 SP3?) nor can I find any hotfixes to resolve this so it's a 'caveat'.Anyway I have tested this many times and with XP SP3 and the new supplicant it all seems to work well (only the access VLAN is using 802.1x Authentication, I am not authenticating the IP Phones via 802.1x).

Now today it stopped working and 802.1x clients behind the 7970 IP Phones no longer authenticate.  I have spent an hour or so looking at this and the IOS is the same, as is the configuration on the IAS (Radius) server, as are the XP clients.  I was scratching my head a bit and then looked at the IP Phone - the software on the phone has been upgraded to 8.5(2) - previously it was 8.4(4).  I managed tp downgrade the software via CUCM to 8.4(4) and it now works.  I have retested it several times so this is obviously an issue (either a new feature or a bug?) with the latest code for the 7970.  I have checked and it's the same codebase for all the latest IP Phones - 7906, 7911, 7931, 7941, 7942, 7945, 7961, 7962, 7965, 7970, 7971 & 7975 which was released on 1st June.  I have looked through the release notes and EAP-FAST has been added but this is an update to the EAP supplicant on the phone and not a feature of the 802.1x pass-thru from the attached device.  I can find no other 802.1x or EAP references.

These switches have an embedded PoE module and would previously give power to all IP phones on all its ports. Now all of a sudden over the past few months 6 of these ports have stopped powering phones. The phones are the same ie. 7911 and they take less than 15.4 W. We believe that the PoE module has started malfunctioning and has stopped giving power to all the ports. The port 'grants' power and then removes it. Below is a link showing all the messaged we receive on the terminal session. It is NOT a hardware fault with the PoE: [code]

Cisco Switching/Routing :: IP Phones 7960 / 7940 Getting Data VLAN IP

Apr 9, 2013

I have a Cisco 6500 which has two VLANs defined

VLAN 31 for Voice VLAN

I have two Cisco 3750 switches.both switches are connected to IP Phones.the configuration of Cisco 6500 Trunk Port to Cisco 3750 is [code] On Cisco 3750, the trunk port to 6500 has the configuration [code].The IP Phones connected to the Cisco 3750 are 7911,7979, 7940, 7961.

All phone are working fine, the phones get their ip address from voice vlan, and systems connected to phones get from data vlan, except 7940/7960.

These two models of IP Phones remain on Configuring IP, and when you check the IP Settings, it gives Data VLAN IP, which does not have a TFTP.once you manually enter TFTP address in the field, it registers instantly, due to ip routing in the network.

these phones were working fine before, but suddenly few days back they went out of the network, and still are in Configuring IP state.I also tried to convert these ports connected to 7940/7960 to access ports [code] but still the IP is taken from the Access Vlan (30). Even If you configure a single VLAN on these ports, the IP phones then never get the IP.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: IP Phones Do Not Start After Rebooting (Switch 4510)

Oct 23, 2012

I'm having some trouble with a 4510 Switch Line Card. I need some recomendations for troubleshooting it.We have some PoE phones connected to the card number 3. When those phones were restarted, they did not go up again. In order to discard wiring issues, we connected the phone directly to the card 3, and the phone did not go up. If the phone is connected to a different card, it goes up correctly.

Additionally, to restore the service, these phones were migrated to other cards, but when we disconnect the equipment, ports in line card 3 remain in an up / up state (and nothing is connected to those ports!!), and only reflect the actual state after restarting the port.What steps could I do in order to troubleshoot this issue?. What should I look for, or how do I discriminate the problem? Might it be a hardware issue, a PoE issue?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 2960 / SG 300 Switch - VoIP Setup - Asymmetric Routing Not Working

May 21, 2013

I have a Cisco SG 300-20 as the core switch, layer 3. It is 192.168.4.6 on VLAN1 and 192.168.5.1 for VLAN2 (VOIP). All the ports are set in trunk mode. DHCP relay is setup on this switch.

The phones connected into a layer 2, Catalyst 2960-S switch. All ports are set in trunk mode. Default gateway on it is set to 192.168.5.1.

DHCP for both VLANs is provided by a Windows Server 2008 R2 server (the relay IP 192.168.4.15).

There is also an ASA 5510 in the mix which is 192.168.4.1. It has a route added to it for the 192.168.5.0 network to go to the SG 300 (192.168.5.1).

Just the two switches can ping each other on the 192.168.5.x network when I "add vlan 2" to the trunk port that is connected between the SG 300 and the 2960. The phones don't get DHCP on the 2960 switch. And I cannot ping 192.168.5.x from the ASA or anything else on the 192.168.4.x network.

After a bit of reading on intra-vlan routing for the SG 300 switch, I am thinking the SG 300 has to be the "center" of things so I need to make it 192.168.4.1 to be the gateway for both VLANs and change the ASA to 192.168.4.2 for VLAN1, etc. And I really can't do asymmetric routing with this switch.
