Cisco WAN :: 1720 Router Very Slow
Aug 31, 2011
I have just got a cisco 1720 router and set it up for my internet connection.I have a cable modem and when running on any previous cheap firewall I could pull about 15 meg download. Now I can only pull about 9.3 meg download. But saying that does not really explain it well as there is a serious lag when I go to a page even like google. When I go to my android phone and download updates, it downloads them one at a time - before putting in this router the updates would come in all at once - not one at a time.
The cisco has an addin 4 port switch which connects to my network.I am connecting the cable modem to the built in fast ethernet 0 interface.
I am not that good with Cisco so I may be doing something completely wrong but don't know where to look. Here is the interface commands I have used on the external FastEthernet0 interface, [code]
Oh by the way I have set the duplex and speed settings to auto but seems to make no difference.

I would like to define a general policy for our company to set the log buffer ("logging buffered xxx"). Currently, most of our configs use the default value of 4096, which does not store much of the history. I'd like to see more, when logged onto a router. We are using different router platforms (from old 1700 up to 39xx oder 72xx) Can you give me any hints, how large the buffer can be set on a platform? Which checks should I do to determine, how large I can set the buffer?
Here's an example of a Cisco 1720 router:
Cisco1720#sh mem
Head Total(b) Used(b) Free(b) Lowest(b) Largest(b)
Processor 81AECE9C 17803244 5548816 12254428 12010916 11815908
I/O 2B43000 4968448 1560416 3408032 3374144 3396668
Cisco says: "Total = the total amount of memory available after the system image loads and builds its data structures."So, in this example, the total bytes are 17803244, which is ~ 16.9 Mbyte. So, if I allocate 64000 bytes, my total buffer will decrease to ~16,3 Mbyte.
I my calculation above is correct, I see no problem in defining a standard value of "logging buffered 64000" for every router platform - even under high load conditions. Since 64 kbytes is a very small value compared to the total usable memory of a Cisco 1720, newer platforms should not have any problems either.

I currently am trying to program the config for a 1720 router however i cannot get the config to stick. I boot up to the command prompt put in all the configurations use the "write mem" command and then hard reset the router but when it boots back up I get the initial system configuation dialog.
I have tried booting to the rommon prompt and typing "confreg" and following the prompts keeping all options set to no except for this setting
"enable "ignore system config info"? y/n [n]: Y"
Is set to yes. but when i get to the end of the config it just loops and starts over with
"you wish to change the configuration? y/n [n]: Y"
If i choose yes it loops if I choose no it goes back to the rommon prompt.

I just did a clean install on sister's Dell Inspiron 1720 Vista Home Premium 32bit, and the WiFi will not recognize the connection. She is the second connection on this WiFi, and after the install, I can't get the ISP No. from AT&T! They keep telling me there is a driver problem, and the IOS says All Tests Passed.
I am not familiar with WiFi connectivity, I have LAN in my location, and am not familiar with this connectivity issue. How to get the ISP info w/o spending the next 4 hours on the phone with AT&T.

I am currently working on a project which requires extending a VLAN over WAN. The equipment I currently possess are:
-2 CISCO 1720 Series Routers (1 Serial & 1 10/100 Ethernet per router)
-2 Paradyne DSL Modems (1 Serial & 1 RJ-11 per modem)
The two sites are about about 1 KM apart.Trunking between the two sites is not possible since:
- Maximum available length of CAT 5, 5e and 6 are 100m.
- Laying a Fiber Optic cable of any kind is not possible since the terrain is extremely rough and would not allow it. Also, there is no existing infrastructure to allow re-using of old Fiber Optic Cables.
- Using a Microwave Transmitter & Receiver did not work. Atmosphere is too humid and too dusty to allow it. A minor success was achieved but only limited to small ICMP packet exchange. Data transfer failed immediately.
I am well aware which routing protocols are used to achieve trunking and inter-VLAN routing. Also, I am also aware that this question might not have an answer because a router would BY DEFAULT not forward any packet to the WAN whose destination address is currently connected to its LAN. It would either drop the packet or just won't pay any attention to it.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 and I can't get connected to the internet at all. Either wireless or hard wire. I have another laptop and desktop that are working fine, never any problems. This laptop has worked before, my brother in law had it before, and he said that he had connected before, but now nothing.

Yesterday my father asked me to reinstall windows after making complete mess of his laptop. After formatting the hard drives and installing the Vista operating system a problem occurred. After installing the drivers from the Dell Drivers CD I can't make the wireless internet working. Windows keeps giving me the "Windows needs to install driver software for your network controller" message. I have goggled the whole internet, did everything from the "PLEASE READ FIRST" thread and still had no success.

I just reinstalled my Inspiron 1720 and everything works fine but the Bluetooth Peripheral Device which keeps reinstalling after every reboot.
In device manager Bluetooth Radios, "Dell Truemobile 355 Bluetooth + EDR" and "Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator" are installed properly but I have in "Other devices" a Bluetooth Peripheral Device which does not want to install.
I used Driver CD provided when I purchased my laptop but it does not find any drivers to solve the problem. I also went to dell.com drivers to fin the latest one and this neither does not work .

My computer used to work fine with wifi but all of a sudden the wifi is not working. At the bottom of the screen I get the bluetooth icon and the little icon with green tick that comes up when you plug in a usb keeps on flashing. The computer show wireless networks available but the next second they disappear. I have installed the driver from dell website, reinstalled the windows and the driver couple of time but the problem persists.
I tried to locate the driver and the hardware and when I go to Device Manager the list keeps on refreshing every 10 seconds.
Under the device manager Network Adapters I can see Broadcom 440x10/100 Integrated Controller and Microsoft ISATAP Adapter 2 (the later keeps coming and disappearing every 10 seconds)
Under the other devices I see yellow semi colon next to Base Sys Device (3 times) and Network controller.

The Bluetooth device driver keeps on turning off / on on its own. I'm using a wireless internet connection with a netgear router and it used to work fine for months. Problem started a week ago. I have Windows Vista Home Premium with SP2. Below are the items listed under the network adapters of device manager when my internet connection is fine:
1) Bluetooth Device (Personal Area Network) - (status is disabled)
2) Bluetooth Device (RFCOMM Protocol TDI)
3) Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller
4) Cisco Systems VPN Adapter - (status is disabled)
5) Intel (R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN
No signs of a conflict like a yellow exclamation mark or X.And here are the only ones listed when i lose connection:
1) Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller
2) Cisco Systems VPN Adapter - (status is disabled)
3) Intel (R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN
Here are the things I have done:
1) Reinstalled the network drivers downloaded from Dell specifically:Intel (R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller2) When the first 2 items are visible, i tried to check for updated drivers by right clicking on it and hitting Update Driver software but it gave me a message that its already updated.
3) Enabled items 1 and 4 to see if it will make a difference but not.
4) Tried the TCP/IP stack repair options by going into CMD running it as Admin and typing in the lines below: netsh winsock reset catalognetsh int ipv4 reset reset.lognetsh int ipv6 reset reset.logRestarted the machine but still got the same problem.
5) Already checked the switch from the side of the laptop and its ON.

I am on a home network.I have already reset my router and other computers on my network are not having any problems getting connected, and I've also re-installed driver.Dell Wireless WLAN Card Uitilty reports "Pass" on all Hardware Diagnostics, and passes all Connection Diagnostics up to Gateway IP Ping.Link Status shows Gateway IP address not available, and Client IP as 169.254.13.90.Setting manual IP info on the wireless adapter to match my network does not work either. After manually setting the IP information on the adapter, IPCONFIG shows the IP info I entered, however, pinging the Client IP returns "General Failure"Inspiron 1720 running Win7 with Dell wireless 1505 draft 802.11n WLAN mini-card.

Inspiron 1720 lost wireless connection after Service tech had me reboot Wireless router for other issue not relating to this computer. Now when I look for wireless connections can not find any. Hard wire works fine. Trouble shoot states there may be a problem with one or more of my network adapters. Not very computer savy....But did find a way to run a Ping test and pass. Clicked on my 1502 Draft 802.11n WLAN Mini card and it states this device is working properly. Opened Broadcom control suite and it shows a Red X on the intergrated controller and the wireless card. with option to run a test or explanation of the Red X.
Do I need a new card or is there something else conflicting with it.. I find it hard to believe the card crashed right when I rebooted the Router...ISP sent a tech out but was not able to find problem.

I have new Inspiron 1720 running Vista with the Dell wireless 1390 WLAN mini-card. I will be connected to the wireless network just fine, but it will then disconnect. My problem is I cannot re-connect to it without having to do a total restart. I go to the place to refresh the list, and it finds nothing. I ask it to repair the network, and it can't becasue it cannot find a network. I have at least 4 other networks in the area that I can normally see, and none appear when I hit the refresh button. But I totally restart the system, and everything works fine again (until it drops again).

I have reconfigured the router from scratch using all sorts of methods and can not work out whats wrong, basically when the client is going to their bank the login screen takes upto a minute to load, and the same with hotmail. However using a cheap billion router these login screens are instant
Checking the CPU usage shows the CPU is hovering around 5-20% at the worst of timesThere is about 10 machines behind this router and they do not do that much intensive work over the link besides Outlook Anywhere (HTTPS)I have put a ACL on the LAN connection to only allow 1 machine in and still no luckI have also updated the IOS to c870-advipservicesk9-mz.124-24.T4.binAll other traffic runs fine over the link and there are no complaints on standard HTTP traffic

We are in the process of setting up an Amazon S3 network backup of the NAS server we have in our office. We are using a Synology NAS to backup to Amazon s3, and we use a Cisco PIX 501 to secure our network. The backup from the NAS to Amazon is going painfully slow, so I contacted Synology to resolve the issue. After they examined everything, they think the router is filtering outbound traffic, and this is causing the upload to slow down. I was told the upload should happen over HTTP and HTTPS, and I made sure these ports where open through the Access Rules. There are no rules defined in the Filter Settings.
I looked at the settings with the PDM, and I can't find where the filtering would be. I'm not too familiar with the PIX or all the network settings involved.

I recently set up a router to have wireless internet at my house, and I've been experiencing very slow internet speeds. My internet specs are below:
ISP: Comcast
Plan: BlastPlus, which supposedly gives speeds of up to 40 mbps
Modem: Ubee D3.0
Router: Cisco/Linksys E1200
Before we got the router we used a wired connection which could only have one person connected at a time. That connection was a good speed, though I don't know exactly how fast. It never gave us any trouble. Now that we connected our router, we can't even stream youtube videos or anything. Emails take a long time to open, and navigating web pages in general is very slow.

I have brand new Cisco E4200 and WD Passport 500Gb.When it connected to router wireless (802.11n 300Mbit/sec) file transfer speed is around terrible 3 MB/sec. Same hard drive directly connected to my Mac Book Pro Unibody produce 30MB/sec. However my internet connection thru the router fairly shows 12MB/sec.It sounds funny, but for me is 4 times faster to download file from the Web rather the from hard dive that I'm holding in my hand.

We have a 861 router for our small office with 15 people. We have been experienced download problems for several months, but we have suspected the internet supplier to be the bottleneck as we have a new 861 router with the default configuration from the "Cisco Configuration Professional Express".
The sympton is that the download speed over http starts fast, but drops after a few seconds from 10MB/s to 3KB/s and stays there. The internet supplier came here today and made some tests. So we downloaded some huge files over the direct cable, and it was staying at constant 10MB/s. When we connected over the router it started at 10MB/s and dropped down to 3KB/s.
Is there something that has been forgotten in the "Cisco Configuration Professional Express"?

I have a new 861 router which I have connected to my home broadband cable modem. Got it all working okay and I have access to the Internet but its not as fast as it is if I connect my laptop to the modem.
My Internet is 60mb (was 100 but I downgraded). When I cannot my laptop directly to the cable modem, I get 60mb download speed on speedtest.net If I connect the router's WAN port back to the modem then I roughly get about 40mb, sometimes even 50.
I do not have any IOS firewall configured on the router, just basic ACLs to stop SSH and TELNET from public networks. If I do enable firewall then my Internet connection halves itself. I have read around that this is the case with ios firewalls on these small routers so I've disabled the firewall but I still don't know why I cannot get full Internet speed.

I have a Netgear Router at home, and both my Laptop and Tablet connect to it via WiFi. Now on both the Laptop and Tablet, Internet has recently become VERY slow. I contacted my ISP and they said everything on their side is fine, so it has to be on my side. What can cause this? I've checked for Malware but the fact that both the tablet and Laptop has slow internet points to the router. I also flushed my DNS on my laptop and booted into safemode with networking, internet still ridiculously slow.Note, both the laptop and tablet travel with me and did connect to other networks sometimes.

decided first of all to connect an old router to the master (but not test) socket together with different cabling & splitter/microfilter - everything starting working almost perfectly (apart from downstream data rate was considerably lower than expected each time I connected - between about 1400 & 1600 Kbps - I have max. 8 Mbps).when I connected back my current router everything continued to be OK (apart from low downstream data rate) - until I would restart the current router and everything went back to very very slow.
