Cisco WAN :: 2811 - Huge Buffer Misses And Automatic Tune Command
Oct 24, 2011
Our 2811 WAN router is experiencing a high volume for huge buffer misses with some failures. Should we look into the automatic buffer tuning command as our IOS supports it. Does the router need to be reloaded after? Has anyone experienced any issues with this command or having traffic dropped (even biped)?

I was wondering about command of Linkset subcommand at ITP7613.I have been using the Cisco7613 chassis for the ITP(SIGTRAN) service.
However, i know that the "tx-queue-depth" command is used for sctp multihoming buffersize that between primary and secondary path at the Link sub-command mode. but i can't adjust the changeover buffersize(retrieval buffer) that between link and another link at the Linkset subcommand mode.
It's above my comprehension.
My guess is that related to "plan-capacity-rcvd" command. it's right?I want to know command that adjust the buffersize of Link changeover.

This has been a problem for quite a while now, jumping from Shaw to Telus,I have completely exhausted, and I have no idea what's wrong.I live in a household with another family, and we share internet connections, Telus Fiber Optik, as of now. Me and my brother both have our own computer and are connected via wireless adapter, and the other family has one laptop with wireless connection.
The problem would be that randomly, the internet would slow down considerably, with pings going insanely high, like over 9000ms (not joking). At first,I thought I was just too far away from the router. So I moved to a room directly under the router, and the internet was completely fine for around 1 week, then the random ping spikes started to happen again. Now, I've tried tweaking wireless settings, and checking to make sure its just not my wireless adapter, however my brother's adapter is new, but it has the same problem too, so I doubt its the adapters fault.

I recently got a Static IP from my service provider, I'm working from home & configured a FTP server in my PC.
I have to transfer huge files say around 40 GB of data as I'm a Multimedia professional. I was using my web server, before for file transfers but there are lot of limitations to huge transfers.
My client, who is downloading using my Local Server says, it takes 3 mins to download a 9 Mb file, which took 17 sec before, when it was done with the webserver.
Does this have anything to do with my Internet connection speed as my speed is 1 - 2 Mbps. If not is there a possibility to increase my transfer speed ?

I administer a wired SOHO network at a business I own, which is nothing more than a XP Pro machine which doubles as a file server. Typically, there are only 3 or 4 work stations in use at any given time, with 3 printers being shared. Backups are done after hours through portable USB. I have a home quality Netgear router behind a cable modem, and unfortunately need to use two 8-port unmanaged switches due to limited cabling between the workstations and the server. Said switches/cabling could prove to be the culprit, except that it used to work nicely.
A few months ago, while browsing the shared folders where the bulk of the approximately 180 Gigs worth of largely graphics files...(browsing from ANY of the terminals)...I began to be aware of random delays of up to 30 seconds or more. It seemed to be a sudden change, but has grown worse over time.
The files in question typically reside under several subdirectories, ie My Network Places/GID/Designs/Stan/Photoshop Files/TeeShirts... and browsing to the actual goodies progresses nicely until the VERY LAST directory, then WHAMMO.....XP flashlight goes back and forth, back and forth, back and forth.....you might wait half a minute before seeing the actual filenames in the window.
Its exasperating, and can randomly happen even if I'm the only person in the building, and the "server" seemingly has nothing else required of it.

Since about 3 weeks ago my DSL has been getting totally random ping spikes, from under 40 to over 1500MS for minutes to hours on end. Nobody else is using my internet, I've verified this. There is nothing sucking up bandwidth on any connected device or computer, as far as I can tell through troubleshooting to the best of my ability. I tried switching to a Cisco X2000 modem/router combo and it did nothing, still totally random latency. Also, when I called AT&T about this, they didn't even know what ping was. They ran an upload/download speed test (which is still mostly consistent regardless of latency) and told me I was basically making the issue up.

If there is something that cant control the bandwidth of our internet.
The problem is that one person is constantly hogging our internet by downloading and such and making it impossible to play games.
So is there anything that can make it so he cant use that much bandwidth so we can play without constant lag?

So I used to use a Thomson TG585v7 modem router (wireless) as my means of connecting to the internet, the aerial cracked on it and I began getting dropped connections, so I went out and bought a D-Link DSL-2730B modem+router. I am hooked up wirelessly to the internet as there is no phone jack in my bedroom, and I experience massive and prolonged lag while playing call of duty 4 multiplayer, which I never had before with my old Thomson modem. My ping also shoots up to about 400 and then 999 while I teleport around the map.

Vista 64 Intel Pro 1000 with latest driver Here is a shot of the lagometer in COD Black Ops when all is good. I used to see this with my old WRT54GS and connected at 100Mbps Full Duplex or Half Duplex and I currently see this when connected through the E4200 at 100Mbps full or half duplex AND when connected via Gigabit via one of the 4 ports on the back of my cable modem, a Motorola SBG6580 [URL] This next screen capture is what happens when I try to connect via Gigabit thru the E4200. It either starts out like this right away or within 30 seconds to a minute this will start to occur. I believe the red spikes indicate packet loss. [URL]

I have a question for Cisco Cat.2960-s Flex Stack switches which are installing on our sties. Two of 2960-s Stack switches as access switch and two of Cisco ME 3600X Series as distribution layer switches are to be installed in our sites. In case of two stack switches, One is will be a Master and the other one will be a member logically, as you know. So, if the master fails, the other one automatically becomes the stack master following a well-documented election process.
Now, it is my question. How long takes to be a stack master from a member switch ? I cant find it on white paper of Cat.2960-s flex stack .
And also, I heard that sometimes a member switches don't election process when the master fails as a result, all stack members become
a panic. Is that really right ? In addition, I heard that the stack switches have many troubleshooting points than stand alone switches.
I really wanna know if the stack switches are good solution for resilience of huge network site. I'm waiting an answer from those who have experience of maintenance or installation.

I use to could be able to watch videos and listen to music, and download at optimal speeds, I could even watch HD if I wanted to, but now all of a sudden (starting at least 3 weeks ago) videos, downloads, and music seem to run super slow no matter what quality I have it on. It takes 5 minutes to buffer a 3 min video, and if I want to watch a show, it take like 2 or 3 hours to fully buffer. My internet still goes fast, and I have trendmicro antivirus, as well as ccleaner, i updated my drivers, i have ie9 and adobe flashhplayer 11.1, i updated everything in windows update, i unplugged the modem for awhile and shut down more often, and opened it up and blew all the dust out. I don't know what else to do. I do have a cisco E2000 wireless router if that's a problem, and both my ps3 and my computer are on the connection, but my computer was working fine with both on the same connection for a year. I go on the http:192.168.1.1 cisco place, and i renewed ip settings, and nothing worked.

About a week ago, without any change to my network settings, I began having a problem with streaming 1080p content from my media server to a router, wired to a switch that serves a few devices in my home theater (including a HTPC, my Boxee Box). Every 15 seconds movies have to buffer. After a while, I narrowed it down to the switch, since wiring the Boxee Box straight to the router caused the movies to run perfectly.Logically, I thought the switch was the problem, since I really made no changes on my network/DD-WRTRouter other than running a Minecraft server (which shutting that down made no difference in network performance).
I ordered a brand new gigabit switch, same problem. Pinging the BoxeeBox returns 0 packet loss whether it's connected to the switch or router, but movies still play perfectly fine when directly connected to the router. Different cables didn't work. Ok, well, I thought maybe the other devices on that switch were causing some sort of conflict.. changed the BoxeeBox's static IP just in-case, unplugged every other device from the switch so that only the BoxeeBox and Router were connected to the switch. It worked fine! Yay! Tried a different cable, still worked fine. Great, I thought, so the problem was never my switch... plugged the old switch back in, then the problem returned.
Changed back to my new switch (each time power cycling all of the network devices) and the problem persisted, even with the SAME EXACT setup I just had a few minutes previously that worked fine. Tearing my hair out at this point.Since that moment I still haven't been able to reproduce a perfect stream unless the BoxeeBox is directly connected to the router. This doesn't make ANY sense as I had this setup running perfectly fine since November 2010. I am COMPLETELY out of ideas other than running multiple ethernet wires to that drop or running all the other devices on wireless.

I would like to define a general policy for our company to set the log buffer ("logging buffered xxx"). Currently, most of our configs use the default value of 4096, which does not store much of the history. I'd like to see more, when logged onto a router. We are using different router platforms (from old 1700 up to 39xx oder 72xx) Can you give me any hints, how large the buffer can be set on a platform? Which checks should I do to determine, how large I can set the buffer?
Here's an example of a Cisco 1720 router:
Cisco1720#sh mem
Head Total(b) Used(b) Free(b) Lowest(b) Largest(b)
Processor 81AECE9C 17803244 5548816 12254428 12010916 11815908
I/O 2B43000 4968448 1560416 3408032 3374144 3396668
Cisco says: "Total = the total amount of memory available after the system image loads and builds its data structures."So, in this example, the total bytes are 17803244, which is ~ 16.9 Mbyte. So, if I allocate 64000 bytes, my total buffer will decrease to ~16,3 Mbyte.
I my calculation above is correct, I see no problem in defining a standard value of "logging buffered 64000" for every router platform - even under high load conditions. Since 64 kbytes is a very small value compared to the total usable memory of a Cisco 1720, newer platforms should not have any problems either.

I have a 2851 and a 1841 both serving as hub routers in a GRE multipoint configuration. They are both receiving buffer misses and failures on startup. I will post the output of show buffers below:
LAB-HUB-RTR#show buffers
Buffer elements:
607 in free list (500 max allowed)
9071 hits, 0 misses, 618 created
Public buffer pools:
Small buffers, 104 bytes (total 71, permanent 50, peak 71 @ 00:11:33):
68 in free list (20 min, 150 max allowed)
7083 hits, 74 misses, 0 trims, 21 created
55 failures (0 no memory)
[code]....
I have tried increasing the small/medium buffers initial size and permanent size, however there is no change. The buffer failures for small and medium buffers are always around this many every boot.I have also changed the IOS versions between 12.4.24(T4) to 15.1 with no luck in stopping the failures.

We're having some issues with a 3560 CPE. It's uplink is a GE fiber link, customer port is FE RJ45. We see a lot of TX-frames being dropped at the FE port, but none at the GE port. Even when the customer is only at ~50Mbit/s downstream traffic. When customer sending ~50Mbit/s upstream, there are no TX- drops at the GE link. Is this a normal behaviour? From what I know the physical medium shouldn't have any inpact on this since drops occurs in the port- asic, and not in physical transmission.Do the buffer-sizes between GE and FE differ? What could we do to optimize the flow and reduce drops? QoS is set to off and no modifications on the queues have been made on the interfaces.

Is there any way to check how much of the total buffer size is utlized at any given moment out of the total space or memory allocated in Cisco 4500 switch For eg - show logging output is as below for a 4500 switch
Syslog logging: enabled (0 messages dropped, 1 messages rate-limited, 0 flushes, 0 overruns, xml disabled, filtering disabled)
Buffer logging: level debugging, 31644 messages logged, xml disabled, filtering disabled
Exception Logging: size (8192 bytes)
From above is there any command to check hw much size is currently utlized , by 31644 messages ..or how much of the located buffer size is utilized.
