Cisco WAN :: 5510 Two Router Branch Routing Design With T1 MPLS And ADSL

Feb 29, 2012

I'm looking for Routing Design scenarios to complete our configuration needs for remote branches.  We will have two 1921 routers in each location, one with a T1 from our MPLS carrier, the other with a DSL connection from an ISP.  The T1 router will have an assigned AS and use BGP to router back to head quarters.  The DSL router will have an IPSec tunnel back to an ASA 5510 at head quarters. I envisions a GRE tunnel from the DSL router back to head end routers connecting to MPLS at head quarters.  Not sure yet how to manipuate the routing between head quarters and the branches such that the T1 router is the primary route to and from the branches and the DSL router is for failover/backup.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 4500 CAT Layer3 To Access Layer And MPLS Design Considerations

Mar 29, 2012

We are about to install a new network consisting of Cat 4500s with Sup7E at the Access Layer, with Nexus 7000 at the Distribution and Core layers. We have 14 floors with at least three 4500s on each floor. Within the office block where the Access Layer and Distribution Layer reside we need to support secure borderless networking using 802.1x to place users from different parts of the business into segregated networks at layer 3.All switches will have the feature sets to support MPLS/ VRF / OSPF / EIGRP / BGP etc.We quickly dismissed the idea of using VRF-Lite due to the sheer number of Vlans we would need to managage and maintain,  the point to point links alone just to get one additional VRF on each floor required far too many Vlans. As a result we are now considering deploying MPLS. The obvious benefits include scalability and manageability, the fact that all switch to switch links can now be routed, instead of having to using SVIs.

Cisco WAN :: Catalyst 3750 / Switching Branch To P2P Fiber From MPLS?

Sep 13, 2011

We recently switched two of our branches to point-to-point fiber connections to our corporate office.  Previously they were using MPLS connections.  For branch A, the ethernet handoff of the fiber is connected directly to a Catalyst 3750 gigabit port.  That port has no configuration on it.  The other end of that fiber is connected to a gigabit port on the 3750 switch at our corporate office.  That port is configured with an IP address that is within the subnet of branch A, and is operating at layer 3 due to the no switchport command.

Branch B currently has a Cisco Express 500 ethernet port (with no configuration on it) connected to the fiber hand off there.  At first we setup a port on the 3750 at our corporate office that is connected to Branch B via the fiber in the same manner.  This resulted in us receiving DCHP leases at Branch B from Branch A.  Obviously not desired.  Now we have the port on the corporate 3750 that is connected to Branch B's fiber configured with switchport vlan 64.  I also configured interface vlan 64 on that switch at corporate with an IP address from the branch B subnet.  We then set that IP address as the default IP address for devices at Branch B.

We are having trouble with both an ATM and a phone system not communicating properly at Branch B.  At Branch A we are experiencing the same oddity with the phone system, but the ATM is able to communicate fully.  At branch B, when configuring a Windows Vista or Windows 7 laptop with a static IP address that is known to be available, you get transit failures when trying to ping.  Essentially everything seems to be able to route fine, but some traffic even after a full tcp hand shake seems to not transmit properly.

When you configure a point-to-point fiber connection from a layer 2 switch at a location without a router to a location with a Cisco Catalyst 3750 switch as the endpoint, what is the best way to configure both sides?

Currently we only have vlan 64 configured on the port mentioned on our switch at corporate, and then the switch at Branch B is essentially operating as an unmanaged switch at the moment with all ports in vlan 1.

Cisco WAN :: 2951 / MPLS Branch Site Setup On T3 Line

May 24, 2013

setting up MPLS on a single T3 line. A client has contacted us to set up a 2951 at a branch location. There are 5 locations connected with MPLS.They will split off 4meg of the T3 for mpls. The rest of the 45meg would go to the internet. They have two 1841's currently set up with a T1 line in each. One 1841 connects to the MPLS and the other to the internet. When the T3 is turned up by the provider, everything, internet and MPLS, will go through it.  I asked for the current configurations, but I have not received them yet and this setup is due in a couple days.Given I've never configured MPLS before and I have a rudimentary understanding of how it works, any tips or configurations? I'd hate to be stuck on site and not equipped to complete the job.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 5510 / 2811 - MPLS Options At Company HQ

Apr 30, 2012

I've studied and labeled out MPLS and MPLS VPNs several times.  The situation I'm presented with is a little different from most of the case studies I've seen in my MPLS books.  I've attached a diagram.

We have a IPsec site to site tunnel from our main HQ router to a Cisco ASA 5510 in the core network in the colo.  This allows our HQ office to reach the private sub nets in our core without using a Cisco VPN client.  The problem we are running into is that this seems to be putting undue strain on the Cisco 2811.  I feel like the 2811 should be able to handle it but doing any kind of upload or download through the tunnel spikes the CPU/Interrupts and makes the router CLI basically stop responding until the traffic transfer is stopped or completed.  During this time, certain Cisco SCCP phones on our Broad works platform cycle while the SIP phones on the same platform are OK.  We are trying to alleviate the load on the 2811 by setting up a VRF from the HQ network to the private VRF used in the Core for private sub net communication.  The problem I'm having is the the HQ also has some public traffic that I do not want to include in the VRFs and would like to have it travel through the P2P circuit we have and access the internet or other public devices through the core public IP Internet routing table.

The flow would be this:
-going to a public address use the public internet routing table
-going to private address in the 10.x.x.x or 172.x.x.x - use VRF to core Private network.

This is a little different of a set up from most of the VRF VPN examples I've seen.  Most of those the CE devices is completely private.  This is not the case at our HQ.

Cisco VPN :: 5510 Unable To Ping Any Off Private IPs At HQ From New Branch

Jun 25, 2012

We have had a successful site to site vpn working for several months now. It is an ASA 5510 at HQ to a ASA 5505 at a branch office in another state. We just added a second site to site vpn in another state this time from HQ to a Sonicwall TZ100. After plugging in the Sonicwall to the Qwest modem in bridge mode the tunnel came right up. I was unable to to ping any off the private IPs at HQ from the new branch, but was able to use remote desktop into the servers and workstations at HQ. Also all the computers show up when browsing the network from the new branch.

At the first branch we are able to ping both ways and use remote desktop both ways. When using packet tracer in ASDM on the HQ ASA and pinging from one of the IPs in the HQ protected network to an IP in the new branch network NAT-EXEMPT looks good, but when it hits the first NAT it matches on the "dynamic translation to pool 10 (10.1.255.254) [Interface PAT]" (which is the default route for all the vlans to get to the Internet.)The next NAT (subtype - host-limits) looks better and this one going to the IP address of the outside interface of the HQ ASA 5510, but then the third NAT (Subtype - rpf-check) reverts back to the "10 (10.1.255.254) Interface PAT]" and the packet is DROPPED. Also there is no VPN step in Packet Tracer after NAT.[code]

Is the problem possibly due to the fact that my 2 new ACLs for "encrypt_acl-30" fall after "access-list global_mpc extended permit tcp any any" in the config and it is running into the implicit deny all?

Cisco VPN :: Creating GRE Tunnel Over ADSL Between ASA 5510 And 2901 Router?

Jul 6, 2011

I've been looking to see if its possible to create a GRE tunnel between a Cisco 2901 with 3 adsl WIC cards and a Cisco ASA.The Cisco 2901 is at our remote office and we have 3 adsl lines for resillience as they tend to go down alot. The Cisco ASA is at our Head Office sitting behind our ISP's managed router.

The desired end result would be to have three GRE tunnels, 1 for each DSL line terminating on the ASA at head office and use EIGRP routing protocol to move traffic across to another tunnel should one fail, and encapsulate all of that with IPSEC.

Cisco Firewall :: How To Design ASA 5510 Failover For Process Control Network

Mar 19, 2013

I'm currently working on setting up 2 ASA 5510's with redundancy/failover. I'm not an expert when it comes to the ASA's so I'm not 100% sure if I can do what I need to.I have 2 inside networks that need to remain separate, a DMZ network, and an outside network. Since each network connects via ethernet to one of the 4 ethernet ports on the ASA 5510's, all 4 ethernet ports on the ASA 5510 will be in use. If I wanted to setup one firewall as Active and the other as standby, how would I go about doing that? Do I need a direct ethernet connection between the 2 firewalls to use something such as HSRP? Or would the Standby firewall be able to tell if the Active firewall is OK since they would both be connected on each of their interfaces to the same networks?

Cisco Firewall :: ASA 5510 Connected To MPLS And LAN Via 6506-E Core Switch

Apr 19, 2011

I am attempting to install an asa 5510 at my hq.  Our MPLS network is provided by our ISP and the routers are managed by them.  They will be working with me to add the needed routes to the routers. Using version 8.4.1  That said, here is my challenge:

I am connecting the MPLS routers and WAAS device to my core switch(also performing inter-vlan routing) in VLAN 2. There are 3 connections needed for the mpls equipment and they are all in vlan 2 on my core switch.  The firewall (ASA 5510 with security plus licensing) also has an interface (outside) in vlan 2.

e0/0
shutdown
no nameif

[Code]....

configuration guides or suggest TAC as they have been a bit inconsistent with this issue thus far.  What am I missing because I cannot get to where inside interface of the firewall is pingable by the lan and the outside interface of the firewall is pingable by the lan.

VPN Routing To Branch Office?

Apr 11, 2012

I am trying to set our VPN connection to route to our branch office from a VPN Client. So far I did not succeed and at this point I am stuck. At our office we have a VPN Server which enables VPN Clients to connect to our main office with an IP Range of 192.168.104.0 with subnet 255.255.248.0 and a branch office with a IP Range of 192.168.25.0 and a subnet 255.255.255.0Internally on the LAN the routing is done by our firewall, which acts as DHCP and Default gateway. It connects the 2 LANs by a leased line. When I ping an IP address in our branch office from our main office I get a reply.

Now when a VPN client connects it gets a IP Address in the range of the main office from our firewall and the client can connect to all computers in the main office network. However if i try to connect to a computer in the branch office it does not work.I tried a static route in the Routing and remote access Server (which is Windows Server 2003 R2) and I tried adding a static route to the DHCP settings on the firewall. In both cases it does not connect from the VPN Client to the branch office.Searching the internet, since the examples are all based on a setup with a RAS Server on both networks. The LANs are already "integrated"/"physicly connected" trough the routing on our firewall and its leased line.

I also tried settings on the VPN Clients machine. Settings like "Use gateway in remote network" on or off and tried adding static routes. This did not work, since the Default gateway I must use is not on the same range as the home network and returned an error trying that. What I noticed is that the VPN Client gets a route which uses the VPN CLient IP as default gateway. Makign a static route like that will work (I think), but since the IP addresses for the VPN clients are obtained through DHCP and can vary each time, there is no way (i think) to automate adding a route with, for example, a batchfile that I could give to the employees connecting trough VPN because of the variable IP.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 4506 Resilient Routing Design With OSPF

Aug 27, 2012

We have 2 sites, each with 2 x 4506 switches which will be connected togther using an etherchannel. The switches will provide access ports for client devices and will be configured with HSRP to provide gateway redundancy. SW1 will be HSRP active.2 metro ethernet links will be installed in each site which will connect back to our HQ sites. OSPF will be used over the backbone to provide resiliency and to allow shortest path routing to each HQ and to prevent traffic over the HQ to HQ link.

The 4506 will be trunked togther with an SVI for providing OSFP adjacency. For the traffic flow from SW2 to HQ2, traffic will hit SW1 and then route back to SW2 and then to HQ2. Is this the best way to do this? Should a second link be connected between switches just for routing or should something like GLBP be used?

So on 2921 router i created 6 sub interfaces for each vlan and assign them to their specfic vlans. Then I have trunk connection to switch 1. Now switch 1 connects to all other switches in the network. As our company design all layer 2 switches should be transparent mode. i tested them i can ping from one switch to all other switches.

Router vtp mode i set to transparent mode and from all switches i can ping the router sub interfaces.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Configuring NAT On 1920 Router With Dual WAN (ADSL)

Jun 7, 2013

Basically I have a simple LAN of 30 users and 2 servers that sit on a private address range (192.168.1.1 - 254). I have a Cisco 1921 router with 2 Gigabit Ethnet interfaces and have installed a 2 port Ethernet module to expand interfaces,I have Two Internet providers that provide me an Optic connection to a converter and then a CAT 5 cable. On both of these connections have private public assigned IP addresses.I have a email server and webserver on the LAN (192.168.2 and 192.168.1.3) and with to port forward various ports to these servers - 25, 80, 443 3389, and 2222.

In my external DNS I have two MX records for the mail server (mail.globalhomegroup.com) that point to 2 A records - one record for the publicly assigned IP address of one ISP and another IP address for the other ISP.  Ideally what i would like is for mail to be delivered to the first ISP Ip address - the one with the lower MX weighting and then if that line goes down, through the IP address of the second MX record - the backup ISP we are using.

So I guess I am port forwarding to the inetrnal server IP addresses via one of the two external interfaces. At the same time I need to allow internal users to access HTTP, HTTPS etc.So I have managed somehow to configure the external interfaces of the routers to connect to the ISPs and have managed to assign IP info to intenral LAN interface. I can telnet to the router from the Internet via Dialer0 or Dialer1. Other than that I am totally stuck - I have tried to configure and debug NAT etc but cant see wood for the trees now. Basically the port forwarding is not working and i am not sure if the config I have done is in anyway correct.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 1700 ADSL Router - Connecting 2 Sites Together

Jan 23, 2012

We currently have a main network running through a static broadband connecting using a Cisco 1700 ADSL router, everything is working fine locally.

We are looking to rent some space in an office nearby so im going to order another business adsl connection with static IP for this site and i currently have a spare 1800 router. My question is can the cisco routers connect up like a VPN connection so both sites work together and will the connection remain online constantly so from the remote office we can access all our servers from the main network?

Also how does the IP addressing work on 2 sites. The main network uses 10.120.21.x and DHCP is assigned from a cisco router. Does the remote network assign from the same DHCP server or would the remote sites cisco router need to be setup to give out DHCP to local machines. If so what would be the best IP setup to use.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: LAN Segmentation Design 6509

Apr 25, 2012

I've been tasked to come up with a design to segment our internal network to reduce broadcast domain size.  In addition, we are running out of DHCP available DHCP addresses.  I need to have a solution that will give me more available IP's, but reduce our broadcast domain.

We are Cisco VoIP shop.  Our current environment consists of dual 6509 chassis in a VSS config.  We have 10 access switches that are model 3750's.  Each 3750 has dual 1Gb fiber links to the VSS Core in an etherchannel configuration.  We have 2 VLANS (data and voice) that spread throughout every switch.  Both VLAN's have their own DHCP scope.

Our current broadcast domain is a 255.255.248.0, so we have over 2000 potential broadcast devices.  Cisco recommends not having larger than 512.  So my research has brought me to a design as follows:

          MY DESIGN:
>  Have individual voice and data VLANs for each closet switch.
>  We have 10 closet switches so this would require 20 new vlans
>  With every separate VLAN we would need a different DHCP scope.
>  Configure 20 new DHCP scopes for the 20 new VLANs.
>  Each DHCP scope would have a 512 available addresses.
>  Enable IP Routing and configure EIGRP on the VSS Core and 3750's.
>  I'm tossing around the idea of have each 3750 be an EIGRP Stub.  Not sure yet.

          QUESTIONS:
1.  How to verify what I described in my design?
2.  Any alternative solution that might be less complicated than configuring Layer 3 on all my access switches?
3.  Any thoughts on configuring EIGRP Stub vs. having the VSS Core do all the work?
4:  Any template that I could base my 3750 config from?

I therefore need to re-configure our 887 router to work as a conduit from our servers back to the Cisco 1841 as its gateway.

I have asked from our ISP and they told me that i need to configure the 887 to use IP address 176.35.140.65 255.255.255.248 and its gateway should be 176.35.140.70. That's great advice in theory but I don't know how to configure this correctly

Our internal network is using subnet 192.168.42.XX which will need to be retained for local devices.
