Cisco WAN :: 7204 - Small Packet Size And Full BGP Table

Feb 7, 2012

I'm looking for a Cisco device to run a full BGP table with a 60Mb link. And one of the main restrictions is that my traffic is almost 100% real-time (voip). So the average packet size is small. Today we own a Cisco 7204 NPE400 with 512Mb RAM. I think even though I upgrade it to a G2, due to the small average packet size, the router will be near to its limit. Maybe a Cisco 7300 NSE-150? Or should I think about a switch?

Cisco WAN :: 2911 512Mb DRAM BGP Full Table Packet Loss?

Jan 26, 2013

I have recently installed a Cisco 2911 ISR G2 with the default 512 Mb DRAM intending to eBGP peer. I ordered the 2GB upgrade RAM however due to time constraints on backordered parts, I fired up this router and eBGP peered without it. The Peer advertised the whole route table with 400,000+ routes. The BGP session came up then the router crashed due to not enough memory. The router disabled IP CEF due to insufficient memory. I disabled IP CEF permanently and have been running the router in this condition for 3-weeks with a stable eBGP session. This resulted in no CEF, 25% CPU during light traffic, 89% memory, and 50% CPU when traffic is around 30 Mbps through the router.

I am experiencing a hit to the throughput resulting in a lost packet and practically a brief traffic stall roughly every minute. This hit is so quick that it does not always result in packet loss and IP traffic sessions are not reset. I do see this on my live bandwidth graphs that the traffic takes a dive every so often, roughly 1-minute.

I initially thought this problem could be L2 to the upstream eBGP peer but all interfaces are clear of errors. I also thought this could be the BGP session going down, however, It is always up. I thought this could be duplex mismatch on L2, however its solid and no logs on either end. Funny thing is pinging thr router from both the LAN side and the WAN side results in the same packet lost every minute or so.

Even though the CPU and memory always stays the same at under 20-50% CPU and less than 89% memory, do you think this could be the BGP Scanner walking the routing table every minute?

Cisco Switches :: L3 ARP Table Size In Sg300-24?

Oct 28, 2012

This is a bit of an odd question because it's about a problem I ran into a year or so ago, but I wasn't aware of these forums at the time, so I thought I'd run it past you all. Unfortunately that means I can't reproduce the problem right now, so it's kind of a theoretical question.

A while ago I tried to deploy an sg300-28 in L3 mode as the "core" switch in our ~70-person office, with static routes across 5 vlans. There were probably around 250 devices on the network in total when you include phones, virtual machines, mobile devices, and so on. Over the deployment weekend things worked fantastic; when everyone came in on Monday, network performance was terribly slow.

So my theory at the time was that the switch's (L3) arp cache was full -- if I pinged  a host on another vlan, the switch would send a new ARP request every  second ping. We scrambled a Linux box to act as a router and disabled the L3 functionality on the switch, and it's been fine since. However, in the months since then, we've observed some STP misconfigurations, which leads me to wonder if it wasn't an ARP table size issue, but rather a topology issue. But moving routing to a different box did solve the problem immediately.

The switch has been fine as our core switch. The MAC table on that switch right now has 358 entries (we've grown since this happened). It was just on level 3 that it wasn't keeping up.

Does this ring a bell? How many arp table entries can an sg300-28 retain?

Cisco WAN :: 2821 MS Group Policy Failure / ICMP Size Too Small On Router?

Nov 29, 2010

When you use Group Policy to determine whether a link is fast or slow, fast links may be incorrectly flagged as slow links.

This problem may occur when a network that you are trying to detect a slow link to is configured to control the size and flow of Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) packets. For example, if a router allows for only ICMP ping packets that have a size of 1,024 bytes, the slow-link detection feature may flag the connection as a slow link. This is because the router discards ICMP packets that are larger than 1,024 bytes. If the router discards the packet because it exceeds the allowed size, fast links may be reported as slow links.

According to Microsoft, the default ICMP ping packet size of 2048 is used.Microsoft recommends changing every single Windows machine's ICMP size...but my customer would rather just change the router. It is a 2821 router, running 12.4(24)T4, using MLPPP to bundle two T1s.

Cisco WAN :: ASR1002 With Full Bgp Table(s)

I've inherited a project building an internet connectivity solution for a large corporate. It has its own AS and its own PI space. They are putting in 100Mbit connections from 5 different Tier1's , taking full internet routing from each. Cisco ASR1002's have already been specified and purchased for the job. I'm not familiar with the ASR platform at all - is it up to the job with full routing tables? multiple instances of full tables ? (not likely to put all 5 into one box!)

It seems like there is a limited number of entries that you can put in the table,10, and I need to configure about 5 more IPs. Any way to expand the NAT table, or alternatively recommend a different router. I would also be willing to add another router to the network, but I have little experience doing that.

Cisco WAN :: 7204 VXR - GRE Tunnel Max Bandwidth

Feb 28, 2010

We have point to point metro ether net link terminating on 7204VXR router. On this point to point link we are configuring GRE over ip sec. Problem is when the traffic exceeding 8mbps we started getting packet drops. from the Cisco documentation it seems the tunnel bandwidth is by default 8mbps and there is parameter like Inherit/receive but those actually not change the tunnel interface bandwidth. If we just give tunnel bandwidth with bandwidth mentioned it allows me to give option of 100mbps but again the tunnel interface bandwidth remains 8mbpos only and probably that 100mbps is useful only for routing decisions.

i am using advance security 12.4.15T12 image. Whether this is a limitation or any other way to go beyond 8mbps for the tunnel interface (7204VXR-NPEG1 processor)

Cisco WAN :: Securing SRDF Between Two 7204 Routers

Jan 3, 2011

We have a leased line from one office to a DR site which we use to back up our data. We are using Cisco 7204 and and OC3 circuit. The data is sent in blocks (SRDF) and we are sending changes only. However, we are getting requests from compliance to further secure this connection since it is a leased line. I guess I need to know how secure SRDF traffic is and then if required, how to secure it.

Can we create a simple VPN between the two routers without having to use a VPN concentrator or Firewall? If so, what IOS would be required? How much impact will the VPN have on current bandwidth?

Cisco WAN :: 7204 / Moving T1 Branch Office To Metro Ethernet?

Jan 31, 2012

I am preparing to move two branch offices from a point to point T1 connection to Century Link Metro Ethernet.Currently my branch locations connect to my HQ 7204 router via a channelized DS3. I have a 4507R at HQ that I will connect the ME circuit to.We will also be moving our Internet connection on the ME circuit. Our service provider Clink will hand me a single Ethernet handoff for the Internet and branch office connections. For the first phase I will connect one branch office using ME. Once that is in place and tested we will move another office and so on. Then our final step is to move our web connection to the ME circuit. Each branch office has their own unique voice and data subnet. They each have a 2801 router and a 3560 switch. The routers are MGCP gateways with only one PSTN connection, a POTs 911 line on a FXO port.

So my questions are;

1 - Should I connect the ME directly in to the 3560 at the branch offices or use the Fa0/1 on the 2801? Fa0/0 is currently connected to the 3560.

2 - On my 4507R at HQ how will I configure the ME switch port? As a dot1q trunk port?

3 - Given that ME is basically a LAN connection will I have to re IP the branch office? HQ is 10.10.1.x/24. Branch is 10.10.166.x/24 (data) 192.168.166.x/24 (voice).

4 - On the 4507R will I need to configure a vlan interface for each branch subnet?

I attached two network diagrams. One represents our current topology (MEexisting) and the second represents the new ME circuit changes (MEprojected).
