Cisco WAN :: SPAN Session On 2960 Switch Capturing Only Control Traffic
Nov 21, 2011
I have configured SPAN session on 2960 switch, source port being a VLAN and destination being one of the fastethernet ports. All I see in the capture is control traffic (HSRP, RIP, Syslog, DNS..etc). However I dont see any real data traffic being captured. Below is how I have SPAN configured..
monitor session 1 source vlan <vlan_id> both
monitor session 1 destination interface fa0/42

I have configured Span port on our 4510. We have an application 5view server to monitor trafic connected to G9/17 Since we have changed the network connection from physical Giga port and add a Port-channel instead, we don't see any more trafic from the new Port-channel to G9/17
We have the configuration below on our 4510 :
monitor session 1 source interface Gi4/6
monitor session 1 source interface Po20
monitor session 1 filter vlan 311 - 312 , 375
monitor session 1 destination interface Gi9/17
From the commands show, we don't see the trafic duplication from the source to the destination port :
Port Source
4510-5567#sh int po20
Port-channel20 is up, line protocol is up (connected)
Hardware is EtherChannel, address is 0016.9de2.a818 (bia 0016.9de2.a818)

On a Catalyst 6500, we configured a SPAN session with VLAN 300 as a source. We configured the session bi-directional ("both" keyword). We connect a sniffer on the SPAN destination port.
Strangely enough, we only see the traffic from the VRF to the firewall, but not the reverse traffic ! What can be the problem ?

Im trying to span a trunk port and capture the dot1q headers on the destination. I'm positive I have it configured right (encap replicate) but wireshark just isn't seeing them. Im trying to capture them on a seperate NIC on my Windows 7 64bit pro box. The NIC is a realtek RTL8169 and it just won't capture the headers. I've also tried the built-in motherboard NIC (which is also a realtek) with the same results.

We have a Cisco 2811 running ITP IOS. On that router we run the SMPP service. A client on the network connects to this service, and we need to capture the traffic for debug.
I've tried traffic-export, but I cannot see any outbound traffic.I'm guessing that this is due to the fact that the outbound SMPP traffic is not transit traffic as it is generated by the router itself.
Is there any way to capture the outbound traffic?

I have a need to capture some traffic but my core 6513's are already using the limit of 2 span sessions. I can't edit any of the sessions either because I want to source traffic from vlans and you can only do one or the other. Is using a VACL with 'switchport capture' on the destination interface an option ? E.g. I want to source traffic from vlan 10,20,30,40 and send the all to interface Gi10/10 ? Is there any caveats ? I dont need to be too granular with the ACL's but just capture all traffic in those vlans.

If I monitor a trunkport on the rootbridge in both directions I get Duplicate Multicast Packets on the perticular VLAN. The first guess is, that this is worked as designed and not a IOS Bug (Platform CAT6500 SUP720 IOS 12.2(33)SXI9 ) Until know I only found an old Cisco press link from 2002 with this subject.

Quick question. I have a site - site tunnel that is up and running between a Pix 515E and a 3050 appliance.Tunnel is up and running but on the pix side I dont see traffic from a couple of subnets behind the inside interface. On the vpnallow access list there are no hits So I setup a capture on the inside interface to see if the packets is making it to the inside interface and nothing. There is some traffic making it thru the tunnel that would have to hit the inside int first and even that doesnt showup in the capture.

I am monitoring 2 or more source interfaces which are running 1G traffic on each interface. Destination is 10G interface. There are 2 kinds of traffic running through the source interfaces: icmp and regular IP traffic. I am only interested in capturing icmp traffic. How can I achieve my goal?I don’t have any vlan traffic at all. Router is c6500.

At present we are having a 4900 series switch where we are running one monitor session.Additionaly we are in need of capturing VLAN traffic and set the destination to 2 * GE ports , both are in the same switch.Due to the limitation of two monitor sessions per switch , we thought of putting the destination ports as port channel but it looks like it is not supported.

I am aware that the 3750 switches are not able to support Netflows, so I have created a SPAN port and spanning traffic from a specific port. I would like to create a seperate VLAN and trunk the traffic from the SPAN port down to the 6509 switch and then capture all the traffic for that VLAN on the 6509.

In s SPAN session , normally the destination prt is used for monitoring purpose only. But could destination port be used to access the equipement or PC connected to that port , for a 2960 LAN BASE image switch .

Been dealing with a strange problem for several days now. It started out with a problem that I thought was VTP related but ended up being something else. I setup a span port on a 3750 that I am connected to that was mirroring the trunk connection coming into the switch.
Never saw an VTP traffic come across the connection but doing a sh vtp status indicated the traffic was arriving and getting processed. When I found some debug commands (debug sw-lan vtp), I was also able to see the packets go between switches. Seeing this issue concerns me that there is other traffic that isnt showing up during a span session.
I know that doing a span on a switch, especially using a trunk port as a source, isnt a good idea. Since I didnt have a TAP at time, this was my only choice. I have since borrowed a NetOptics TP-CU3 tap from a good friend and was able to confirm the VTP traffic was going across the trunk connection between switches.
All of my 3750's are running 12.2.55.SE.

I have pair of 5596 switches in vPC. One host say "HOST A" is connected to the primary vPC peer and other "HOST B" on secondary vPC peer. Both are in same VLAN 10. Both hosts are vpc orphan ports as their NIC is configured in active/standby mode.I have configured span session on both vPC peers with span source as VLAN 10 in rx mode.Span destination is connected to secondary vPC peer. The issue here is that I am not able to capture the traffic originating from HOST A destined to HOST B which is traversing vPC peer-link.Same issue occurs for the traffic in reverse way and span destination on primary vPC peer. In a nutshell, any traffic which crosses vPC peer-link is not getting captured.
What could be the issue and is there any solution for it. Below mentioned is the span config and relevant interfaces. [code]

I am seeing the following behavior when computers move from one switch to another with dot1x ONLY when there is a 'stupid' switch in between.
computer -------- 'stupid' switch ------- 2960
dot1x is working fine but when the computer is disconnected, the port still shows the authentication session id so when the computer connects to another port or switch, authentication succeeds but traffic doesn't pass. While I'm almost certain that the culprit is the 'stupid' switch that doesn't clear the session id, I have already tried another one and the problem remains so I'm actually just asking for a confirmation that all these 'stupid' switches present this behavior and if there is a workaround in this case.

I am having some problems creating a SPAN port on my Cisco 871 (running IOS 12.4-11T). My 871 is connected to a DSL modem, and uses "IP Negotiated" to get its dynamic ip address.I want to monitor the WAN port (FastEthernet4) using SPAN, but when I type "monitor session 1 source interface FastEthernet4" into the cli, it is rejected. I can successfully use any of the other FastEthernet ports, as well as Vlan1 as a source for the SPAN session. I have tried to use Dialer0 instead of FastEthernet4, but it still doesnt work.

[url]... I cannot find and obviously not figure out how to use the SPAN command. My main objective is to simply setup a port mirror on one of my TenGigabitEthnet interfaces and from what I read SPAN is the best way to setup a tap interface on a cisco switch.

We have around a dozen Catalyst 3560 and 2960 switches in a ring topology. We are considering adding storm control to our trunk ports. Up until now we have only used it on edge ports with default values and without error-disable.I am proposing that we also add storm control to trunk ports at a lower level and that we error-disable only the redundant links that make up our loops.
-storm-control broadcast level 25.00 20.00
-storm-control multicast level 2.00 1.00
-storm-control action shutdown [only on redundant links]
In a storm all links will restrict broadcast which should work accessing remote switches, but the redundant links should errdisable and block the redundant path. It is important that the action line is not applied to links that are not redundant as we could isolate parts of the network. Any reason not to use storm control on trunks?

I have 2 devices which need to communicate through Logical Link Control. Each device functions like this: they have a built in network switch that allows their internal components to communicate with TCP/IP which is then encapsulated inside LLC frames and sent out a special port. The LLC frames from each device all come from a single source MAC address and are broadcast out the network. The receiving deivce receives the LLC frames, unencapsulates the data and uses it directly.
Using it this way through a single 2960 (such that device 1 is connected to fa0/2 and device 2 is connected to fa0/23) with its own dedicated VLAN and no other traffic on the switch (all other ports shutdown), the two devices are unable to "connect". Using a SPAN session, I can clearly see them exchanging LLC frames, but if I connect my computer to the internal device switch and try to ping the other device through the LLC encapsulated link, I get anywhere from a 25% to 100% loss with response times between 2ms and 15ms.
When I connect the special ports of each device together directly with a straight through cat-5e cable, they can connect and I can successfully ping through the link with sub-millisecond response times. The same goes if I connect them through an old unmanaged Linksys switch. I have toggled everything on the 2960 I can think of, including STP, CDP, LLDP, storm control, keepalives, IGMP snooping, management interface VLAN1, and QoS. In general, the more of those that I turned off, the faster the ping responses became, but nothing seems to stop the data loss.

We are an A/V integrator and AMX shop and provide our clients with support through the use of VPN tunnels from our RV042 router to their mostly RVS4000 routers.Support is provided through access of remote site equipment using VNC, Telnet, FTP, etc. from multiple PC's at our main office.Netbios is not turned on, but the remote sites have the ability to access equipment on our local LAN should they know our private IP address range. Is there any way to limit the acces from the remote sites back to our LAN while maintaining our access to the equipment on their LAN?I know that one can limt the IP address range on on end of the VPN, but I would like to limit the ability of remote sites to gain "any" access to our LAN. If there's any way to just prevent all traffic from an IP address range on the remote site, that would also do.

We have a data center with servers set up for different projects, some servers from partner companies and several small LANs. The traffic between all those needs to be controlled and firewalled. The servers and LANs are divided into different subnets and VLANs. Physically, their traffic is aggregated on a couple of 4506 and then sent to a FreeBSD server, where the logical gateways are set up and traffic is filtered between them. The BSD server is dying and having it there is incorrect in the first place, so we are planning to replace it with two ASA (5520) in failover. The question that arises is how to correctly implement firewalling between VLANs. Originally we thought to set up the firewalls in transparent mode and logically terminate VLANs on a stack of 3750 switches behind them, but would that filter the traffic between the VLANs? Then we thought to perhaps terminate the VLANs on the ASAs, use routing mode, and do filtering there, as well. Or should we implement multiple contexts? We have about 20 VLANs and all of them differ in rules of what should go there. None of this can be concidered an "inside" - trusted - zone, nor "outside". Internet and external links are connected and filtered in a different place.

We have 3 sets of applications. The first does not require much bandwidth but is very critical, the other two is more bandwidth consuming but less critical. I would like to know if it's possible to reflect this priorities on the router configuration. Is it possible to set the ports 10000, 10001 and 10002 of the external IP have higher priority to be handled, for example? Also, is it possible to limit the bandwidth that goes through a set of ports?
I must prevent the 2 sets of less critical applications to strugle the critical ones. What router can provide this capabilities? Is the 1921 able to do this job?

My issue is creating an access list to DENY traffic from entering the network connected to Fa0/1 but ALLOW traffic to exit from that network. I am using one class C network which is subnetted 7 times to provide me with the required LAN's.

I've been digging into some performance issues on a LAN that has a couple of 2960s. The monitoring software I'm using has indicated a high amount of discarded outbound packets (up to 5%). The suggested resolutions were to enable flow control.
My question is does enabling flow control on all ports interrupt network traffic at all? this is a production network so I had already planned on doing it during off hours but also wanted to know if I should be prepared for any significant drop in traffic.

I have an ASA pair configured to replace a router that hosts a collection of IPSec Tunnels. Tunnels appear to work. I am lab'ing some additional controls that I would like to implement. On the Production Router that i plan to replace with the ASA's the current Tunnels are all wide open (all traffic allowed to pass). I was hoping to lock things down a little without having to reconfigure all of the Tunnels. My though was that an ACL on the Inside Interface blocking selected traffic Out (so into the LAN) should not impact the stability of the Tunnels but allow me to restrict some traffic from entering the LAN. One port that I was attempting to block is RDP 3389. When this ACL is applied to the inside interface it does not block Port 3389 at all. What am I missing? Is it that the trffic is being allowed because it is coming through one of my 'open' Tunnels?
Shouldn't IPSec Tunnel traffic be processed by the Inside Interface ACL just like all other traffic?
