Cisco Switching/Routing :: 4900 Capturing VLAN Traffic And Set Destination To GE Ports
Jan 24, 2012
At present we are having a 4900 series switch where we are running one monitor session.Additionaly we are in need of capturing VLAN traffic and set the destination to 2 * GE ports , both are in the same switch.Due to the limitation of two monitor sessions per switch , we thought of putting the destination ports as port channel but it looks like it is not supported.

We need to connect several DSLAMs on the 4900 switch, every DSLAM has 4 VLANs configured (VOIP service, MGMT, ADSL Private, ADSL Public), and sends the traffic for each service tagged with appropriate VLAN id according to the table:
VOIP: 608
MGMT: 594
ADSL PRIVATE: 2900
ADSL PUBLIC: 2930
On the DSLAM side it is very simple configuration, just a normal trunk with 4 VLANs transversing the link. On the 4900 I need to isolate the traffic for ADSL PRIVATE & PUBLIC service so DSLAMs connected to the same switch do not have L2 connectivity between them. For VOIP and MGMT they must communicate with each other. DSLAM acts also as a VOIP GW so it must communicate with other DSLAMs for VOIP service. Also VLAN 200 is configured on ME 4900 for switch management traffic.
This 4900 Switch connects to MPLS PE router, which offers L3 VPN service for VOIP & MGMT service, and L2 VPN for ADSL service (PPPoE traffic to BRAS). Fortunately we have ES+ linecard to support many ethernet features. I tried this config:
1) VOIP, DSLAM-MGMT, MPLS-MGMT configured as normal VLANs
2) ADSL PUBLIC & PRIVATE configured as isolated secondary VLANs, primary VLAN for ADSL PRIVATE is 2008, for PUBLIC 2308
3) Configure DSLAM facing ports on ME 4900 as private-vlan trunks
4) Configure ME 4900 uplink port to MPLS PE as a private-vlan promiscous trunk
5) Configure ethernet services on MPLS PE for each tag that comes from ME 4900 (ES+ cards are awesome, i love them:D )
6) Apply L3 VPN service for VOIP and DSLAM-MGMT, and L2 VPN for ADSL service.
But at least this last command should list on spanning tree forwarding state also the ADSL VLANs or not?
Here is the output of the show interface switchport.

I have configured Span port on our 4510. We have an application 5view server to monitor trafic connected to G9/17 Since we have changed the network connection from physical Giga port and add a Port-channel instead, we don't see any more trafic from the new Port-channel to G9/17
We have the configuration below on our 4510 :
monitor session 1 source interface Gi4/6
monitor session 1 source interface Po20
monitor session 1 filter vlan 311 - 312 , 375
monitor session 1 destination interface Gi9/17
From the commands show, we don't see the trafic duplication from the source to the destination port :
Port Source
4510-5567#sh int po20
Port-channel20 is up, line protocol is up (connected)
Hardware is EtherChannel, address is 0016.9de2.a818 (bia 0016.9de2.a818)

I am aware that the 3750 switches are not able to support Netflows, so I have created a SPAN port and spanning traffic from a specific port. I would like to create a seperate VLAN and trunk the traffic from the SPAN port down to the 6509 switch and then capture all the traffic for that VLAN on the 6509.

I want to know if there is way to tag traffic with DCSP tags without having to do all the other requirments of QOS setup. All i want to do is just tag traffic at different DCSP values via source and destination IPs. We do not have a need to be priortizing traffic on out internal switches. We just want to tag the traffic so our MPLS provider can distinguish the different types of traffic.
Our environments is primarily 3750s in all offices.

We have 2 6513 switches with SUP720/PFC3A and various POE modules and a 6748-GE-TX facing our servers. Additionally, we have a 4Gbps portchannel trunk interconnecting the switches. We have approximately 300 Nortel IP 1140e phones in use between the two switches. For the purpose of call recording, we've attempted to mirror the voice vlan using various approaches and have been met with limited success. We mirrored the VLAN using tx, rx, and both. When using both we appear to get duplicate packets at the destination interface. We seem to lose packets completely going in one direction or another for a given call. Packets are lost before they get to the destination interface?

We have a Cisco 2811 running ITP IOS. On that router we run the SMPP service. A client on the network connects to this service, and we need to capture the traffic for debug.
I've tried traffic-export, but I cannot see any outbound traffic.I'm guessing that this is due to the fact that the outbound SMPP traffic is not transit traffic as it is generated by the router itself.
Is there any way to capture the outbound traffic?

I have two questions for a Cisco 2960 (WS-C2960-24TC-L)
1. I am working to setup a few Cisco 2960 switches for HP iLO access to our servers. We are going to segregate the iLO network (VLAN 40) from the data network (VLAN 10) by using a different VLAN. All of the HP servers will be configured with static addresses. My question is, how do I set all the ports to VLAN 40 so that untagged devices will automatically go onto VLAN 40? I don't want to have to configure the VLAN on each iLO port on the server. I tried to set the port to: "switchport trunk native vlan 40", but that didn't work.
2. Also, how do you access the web GUI for these switches? I get a login box, but putting in the enable password doesn't work. I have the following commands in the config: [code]

I’m working with a managed switch that has three V LANs setup on it. Recently the domain changed and the wireless V LAN can no longer access the internal website. I found access rules, in the switch that allowed the wireless V LAN to use the DNS server on the private/staff V LAN. Their DHCP scope is on the switch and DNS is set there. The Website is also on the V LAN with the DNS server. This configuration totally cuts out external DNS usage. It stopped working though. It is as if when things switched on the Domain the wireless users were denied DNS requests. The switch was not touched at that time. I’m looking at it though and it seems that I may have conflicting rules.
The version is 12.2. I believe its a Catalyst 2600~
DHCP scopes: ip dhcp pool INSIDE network 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0 default-router 192.168.1.1 dns-server 192.168.1.6 192.168.1.4 domain-name saline.lib.mi.us
ip dhcp pool WIRELESS
network 172.16.0.0 255.255.255.0 default-router 172.16.0.1 dns-server 192.168.1.6 192.168.1.4
Here is the V LAN Setup:
Interface Vlan1
ip address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0
[code]...
Here are two access lists that should be allowing the traffic from 172.16.0.0 into the list IPs/Ports. These do no work.
ip access-list extended WIRELESS-PRINT
permit tcp 172.16.0.0 0.0.0.255 host 192.168.1.12 eq 30044
permit tcp 172.16.0.0 0.0.0.255 host 192.168.1.12 eq 21326
permit tcp 172.16.0.0 0.0.0.255 host 192.168.1.12 eq 6987
[code]...
During my testing I removed the Deny rule and everything worked. deny ip 172.16.0.0 0.0.0.255 192.168.1.0 0.0.0.255
However, the “ permit ip any any “ rule, makes all the port rules pointless because when this rule is in place solo, I can ping and access everything on the 192.168.1.0 network. Is there a way to deny everything, except what I permit? Because when I remove the ip any any, then they cant even get out. Perhaps there a better way to say, the wireless users can get out but only get into the sub net over specific ports? I have a feeling it may have not be thought out entirely when initially created. However, the big mystery is that it worked before secondary domain controller failed.

we've had an issue with our network, we have 2 6509 connected with redundancy, which are connected with 2 x 4900 Switches, from which are connected to a ESX Chassis for visualization, the thing is that the ESX stopped working, and the 4900 switches, and the main core were suffering from overload, they hang on it very well, in order to stop the overload, one of the links to the ESX Chassis were disconnected from one of the 4900 switches. The CPU usage from the 4900 and the core(6509) went down below 40%, and then they started to migrate the virtual servers from the chassis to another 2 chassis that were added right after. They were actually working well, but suddenly the 6509 changed to the other supervisor after everything was OK. We were wondering what could have been the cause of this, maybe the virtual servers migrations, maybe the overload from the ESX ? We also had a few question, is there any need to reload the cores every few months as a planned task ? Because the cores have been up for more than 1 year. And also is there any kind of of tool to monitor the CPU status, or the status overall from the cores or the switches ?

I have peculiar challenge ahead of me and would like to get new perspectives.
The objective is to route specific VLAN traffic and the caveat is that I have multiple VLANs with the same network address.
For example:
VLAN100 10.10.10.0/28 VLAN101 10.10.11.0/28 VLAN102 10.10.12.0/28
VLAN103 10.10.12.0/28
VLAN104 10.10.11.0/28
I need traffic going from VLAN100 with a destination of 10.10.11.0 forwarded to VLAN101 and NOT VLAN104.
This task is currently being completed by a multi context firewall and we're trying to decommission the asset.

Planning to implement HSRP in layer 3 switch.
We have two numbers of Cisco 4900 ME Switches. Basically want LAN failover from these devices. There are about 400 users in our network. I have attached rough network topology for your reference(I am not good at Microsoft Visio). Need to know implementation of the HSRP in these switches. Two distribution switches(Cisco 4900 ME Switches) are connected to 4 Access switches and these are connected to the LAN.

I have 2 hosts, 1 plugged in fa 0/21 in VLAN 101 and another in fa 0/22 in VLAN 101 on our L2 Cisco 2960. If I try and transfer files from either host the gig 0/1 trunk port on the 2960 leading tot he 3750 fa 0/1 port hits 100mb (using a real time bandwidth monitor tool), but why? This VLAN is on the same switch, why does it go one way up the trunk to the L3 3750 switch? The L3 3750 is the VTP server and the 2960 is a client. I would of thought the traffic stays local. The 2 hosts don't even have a gateway set.To sum up the typology the 2960 and 3750 are trunked using a single cable. The 3750 hangs of a ASA firewall using SVIs.Here is whatthe traffic looks like when copying a file between hosts (2gb file).

interface FastEthernet1/0/4
description Trunk to Cisco 2960 Gig 0/1

Have a quick question regarding inter-vlan routing on a 3750. Overview of network is ISP --> ASA --> 3750 (acting as my core and default gw). I have 5 vlan interfaces on my 3750, all w/ 192.192.x.x subnets, a 6th w/ 192.168.100.x, and a 7th w/ 192.168.200.x. I have enabled "ip routing" on the switch and can successfully ping from subnet A to subnet B as long as both devices are using the correct DG for their vlan, which is the switch. I have a few ports that are trunked as well that go to ESX hosts which break out the vlans according to the subnet the vm should be attached to. The ASA is set to nat internal traffic for all the vlans.
Now my question: short of applying an ACL to each vlan interface to block traffic from other 192.192.x.x subnets is there a better way to accomplish this? I want my 192.168.10.x subnet to be able to reach all the subnets, but don't want 192.192.10.x to be able to talk to 192.192.20.x for example. I was thinking to create an acl like this:
access-list 120 permit ip 192.192.10.0 0.0.0.255 access-list 120 deny ip 192.192.0.0 0.0.255.255 192.192.10.0 0.0.0.255access-list 120 permit ip any 192.168.100.0 0.0.0.255 192.192.10.0 0.0.0.255
and then applying this to the interface for the appropriate vlan.

I have problems in my Cisco network until I connected some Moxa devices. This Moxa are models EDS-316 and EDS-208
My principal trouble is the traffic UDP. Suddently the network don't permit the traffic UDP in VLAN where are connected Moxa devices.
During an hour the Moxa can send TCP traffic, but can't send UDP. If a Moxa device is unplugged from network, all devices connected to him can work offile from principal network, but if I plugg again the Moxa is like disable.
After one hour (more or less) the system restart all functions and work fine.I catch the logs from TXerrorsInPorts and all the ports where is connected a Moxa have errors all time.
I don't know which is the problem, but I think that problem is in negotiation from Moxa to Cisco. This is the configuration from a port where is connected a Moxa: [code]

Quick question. I have a site - site tunnel that is up and running between a Pix 515E and a 3050 appliance.Tunnel is up and running but on the pix side I dont see traffic from a couple of subnets behind the inside interface. On the vpnallow access list there are no hits So I setup a capture on the inside interface to see if the packets is making it to the inside interface and nothing. There is some traffic making it thru the tunnel that would have to hit the inside int first and even that doesnt showup in the capture.

I have a requirement to monitor all traffic going from the internal LAN to the cloud. The LAN is a layer 2 VLAN which spans multiple Cisco 4507 switched and other smaller switches.
The VLAN has an IP address which the hosts use as the default gateway.
The exit port is on a Cisco 3600X switch connecrted to 4507 #1 via a 10G fiber link. 4507 #1 connects the rest of the LAN. Those switches interconnect via 10G fiber and 1G copper links.
Currently the monitor host is connected to a 1G copper port, configured as a monitor port, on one of the backside 4507s The switch manager says he has the switches configured so that I can see all traffic on the VLAN.

We have a switch gc2960. It has ports configured on vlan 27 and vlan 29.It is connected to switch ch3550. It has presence of vlan 27 vlan 29 and also vlan 18 and several other vlans. Our internet firewall is connected to ch3550. It is a fortinet product, so this is not indicated on the diagram.
When the two switches were connected on vlan 29 access ports, pc's on vlan 29 on gc2960 worked as expected. vlan 27 clients of course did not work. When we switched the connecting ports to trunk ports, some weird stuff happened. Clients on gc2960 on vlan 29 could ping and resolve dns, but not browse the intenet. The same was true for clients on gc2960 vlan 27. We verified that packets from the web were coming in through the firewall. What we were thinking, is that they somehow were not being tagged to vlan 29 even though we were trunking.
When we set native vlan 29 on the trunk, then clients on gc2960 vlan 29 operated as expected. However, clients on gc2960 vlan 27 are still having this problem, we can ping and resolve dns but not browse.Consider the other switch ch2960-jstreet which has presence of vlan 18 and vlan 27. It is also connected on trunk to ch3550. We are not using native vlan on this trunk, and traffic works as expected. Is the lack of presence of vlan 18 a factor as to why gc2960 is not receiving the tagged packets correctly? Should the interface vlan18 on gc2960 have an ip address on the vlan 18 network?

I've been looking into IGMP snooping and have read that a L2 switch will forward multicast traffic to all ports connected to an interested receiver AND all mrouter ports. In a L2 'V' topology this results in all multicast traffic routed onto a VLAN being forwarded to the 2nd distribution switch. My question is how should a 6500 Sup720 deal with this unwanted multicast traffic? Both a Local SPAN of the RP and a Netdr capture suggest that this traffic is punted to the RP and ultimately dropped. Is this expected behavior or should the traffic be dropped in H/W?
