Cisco Switching/Routing :: Setup TwinGig Converter To Use GLC-SX GBIC In 4900?

Jun 17, 2012

I am having problems configuring a 4900.  I have entered the following commands:

hw-module module 2 port-group 1 select gigabitethernet
hw-module module 2 port-group 2 select gigabitethernet
hw-module module 2 port-group 3 select gigabitethernet
hw-module module 2 port-group 4 select gigabitethernet

However no matter what I try, it never sees the GLC-SX gbics I have in the TwinGig converter.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 4900M Twingig Converter Module SFP

I am little confused with all these SFP types.

Can I use GLC-LH-SM, GLC-LH-SMD and SFP-GE-L with Twingig converter module? When I used Cisco configuration tool, the only option is GLC-LH-SMD for 1000BASE-LX.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: WS-X45-SUP6 Not Detecting On Twingig Converter Module

Apr 8, 2012

I have a 4506-E with the following supervisor module:WS-X45-SUP6-E

It currently has 2 TwinGig converter modules installed. I want to upgrade the 2 1Gb connections to 2 10Gb connections. First I took out the converter modules and installed 2 X2-10Gb-SR's, but it didnt recognize ("No X2 GBIC")???

Then, I put the converter module back in and put two SFP-10GB-SR's in them, but they don't recognize either...???? I"m running IOS

According to the 10Gb matrix, they should work:

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6509 / 4900 - Network Down Cause Switching Supervisor With Redundancy

Jan 11, 2012

we've had an issue with our network, we have 2 6509 connected with redundancy, which are connected with 2 x 4900 Switches, from which are connected to a ESX Chassis for visualization, the thing is that the ESX stopped working, and the 4900 switches, and the main core were suffering from overload, they hang on it very well, in order to stop the overload, one of the links to the ESX Chassis were disconnected from one of the 4900 switches. The CPU usage from the 4900 and the core(6509) went down below 40%, and then they started to migrate the virtual servers from the chassis to another 2 chassis that were added right after. They were actually working well, but suddenly the 6509 changed to the other supervisor after everything was OK. We were wondering what could have been the cause of this, maybe the virtual servers migrations, maybe the overload from the ESX ? We also had a few question, is there any need to reload the cores every few months as a planned task ? Because the cores have been up for more than 1 year. And also is there any kind of of tool to monitor the CPU status, or the status overall from the cores or the switches ?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: L3 Routing With Catalyst 4900 Series?

Mar 19, 2013

I have peculiar challenge ahead of me and would like to get new perspectives.

The objective is to route specific VLAN traffic and the caveat is that I have multiple VLANs with the same network address.

For example:

VLAN100 10.10.10.0/28 VLAN101 10.10.11.0/28 VLAN102 10.10.12.0/28
VLAN103 10.10.12.0/28
VLAN104 10.10.11.0/28

I need traffic going from VLAN100 with a destination of 10.10.11.0 forwarded to VLAN101 and NOT VLAN104.

This task is currently being completed by a multi context firewall and we're trying to decommission the asset.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: ME 4900 Private VLAN Config

Feb 9, 2012

We need to connect several DSLAMs on the 4900 switch, every DSLAM has 4 VLANs configured (VOIP service, MGMT, ADSL Private, ADSL Public), and sends the traffic for each service tagged with appropriate VLAN id according to the table:

VOIP: 608
MGMT: 594
ADSL PRIVATE: 2900
ADSL PUBLIC: 2930

On the DSLAM side it is very simple configuration, just a normal trunk with 4 VLANs transversing the link. On the 4900 I need to isolate the traffic for ADSL PRIVATE & PUBLIC service so DSLAMs connected to the same switch do not have L2 connectivity between them. For VOIP and MGMT they must communicate with each other. DSLAM acts also as a VOIP GW so it must communicate with other DSLAMs for VOIP service. Also VLAN 200 is configured on ME 4900 for switch management traffic.

This 4900 Switch connects to MPLS PE router, which offers L3 VPN service for VOIP & MGMT service, and L2 VPN for ADSL service (PPPoE traffic to BRAS). Fortunately we have ES+ linecard to support many ethernet features. I tried this config:

1) VOIP, DSLAM-MGMT, MPLS-MGMT configured as normal VLANs
2) ADSL PUBLIC & PRIVATE configured as isolated secondary VLANs, primary VLAN for ADSL PRIVATE is 2008, for PUBLIC 2308
3) Configure DSLAM facing ports on ME 4900 as private-vlan trunks
4) Configure ME 4900 uplink port to MPLS PE as a private-vlan promiscous trunk
5) Configure ethernet services on MPLS PE for each tag that comes from ME 4900 (ES+ cards are awesome, i love them:D )
6) Apply L3 VPN service for VOIP and DSLAM-MGMT, and L2 VPN for ADSL service.

But at least this last command should list on spanning tree forwarding state also the ADSL VLANs or not?

Here is the output of the show interface switchport.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: GBIC On 6509

Nov 7, 2011

I have an interesting problem. I have a 6509 that I'm trying to swap the GBIC on. The switch is already using a GLC-SX-MM GBIC and it is up/up and passing traffic, but we are getting some errors and suspect it may be faulty.

I want to replace the GBIC with one of the identical model - a GLC-SX-MM. It was brand new, never been opened. When the new GBIC is plugged in the link light on the switch goes completely off (not amber) and the port goes into a down/down (not connect) state. There are no messages in the logs at all. It's like it doesn't even see it. If you plug the old GBIC back in then the link comes back up. I tried a different port with the same results.Thinking that the new GBIC may be faulty (even though it was brand new) I tried a second GLX-SX-MM, also new. That one does the same thing.

At that point I thought there might be a problem with that switch, so I tried the GBICs on the other 6509 in that pair. The other 6509 is running the same hardware and software. The GBICs will not work there either. If you move the old, suspected faulty GBIC from 6509-2 to 6509-1 then that it works.

The solution would seem to be that I have two faulty GBICs, but I'm having trouble persuading myself that I have two new ones, straight out of the package, that are both bad. Are there any other things to check on the switch? Here's the pertinent information:

Cisco Switching/Routing :: FSM726S - GBIC Compatibility

Oct 22, 2012

I've inherited a network. It looks to have been setup as 10/100 originally, using Netgear FSM726S switches with fibre connecting the switches. The fibre to copper conversion is mainly achieved with 10/100 media convertors rather than GBICs - not sure why - though there are some GBICs in use. Some of the "key" switches have been upgraded to Cisco Catalyst 2960G switches, but nothing else has been touched, so most of the network still runs at 100MB.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Does CVR-X2-SFP10G Converter Support 1000Base-T SFPs

Jun 14, 2012

To do that I would like to be able to sniff the traffic traversing our 7k. However, as the 7k doesn't support remote span we have to span locally. This means that I have to connect a pc to the Nexus and sent the span output to that port. However, our 7K is only equipped with N7K-M108X2-12L modules, which contains X2 10G ports. I found the CVR-X2-SFP10G X2 to SFP+ convertor module, but I wonder whether this supports a 1G copper SFP. If it doesn't it would be wasteful to buy one. On the page concerning the module I only found 10G fiber sfp's which are supported.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3560G Routed Port Connected To E1 Converter?

May 25, 2013

I have made a routed port on 3560G Switch and defined a pool 172.28.4.62 255.255.255.192 and connected to E1 converter RAD (4E1 to 4 FE) the E1 media is through Microwave on the other end same E1 converter is connected through layer 2 switch and defined a pool as of routed port configured in 3560G switch.

The port is generating lot of giants and after a while it also distrubs other routes ( Port1 to Port 16), configured with Vlan11 and port 22 as routed port.I have checked the routed port through wireshark the maximum frame size is 1514 and configured the MTU to 1514, giants are not showing any more but after 10 to 12 hours switch gets hang. Either to shut the port or to reload the switch to get switch and other layer routes to be normal.

I have checked speed and duplex settings same as E1 converter. Full duplex. 100 Speed. Why switch is not behaving normal. If I shutdown the routed port it is normal.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 2960 / SG 300 Switch - VoIP Setup - Asymmetric Routing Not Working

May 21, 2013

I have a Cisco SG 300-20 as the core switch, layer 3. It is 192.168.4.6 on VLAN1 and 192.168.5.1 for VLAN2 (VOIP). All the ports are set in trunk mode. DHCP relay is setup on this switch.

The phones connected into a layer 2, Catalyst 2960-S switch. All ports are set in trunk mode. Default gateway on it is set to 192.168.5.1.

DHCP for both VLANs is provided by a Windows Server 2008 R2 server (the relay IP 192.168.4.15).

There is also an ASA 5510 in the mix which is 192.168.4.1. It has a route added to it for the 192.168.5.0 network to go to the SG 300 (192.168.5.1).

Just the two switches can ping each other on the 192.168.5.x network when I "add vlan 2" to the trunk port that is connected between the SG 300 and the 2960. The phones don't get DHCP on the 2960 switch. And I cannot ping 192.168.5.x from the ASA or anything else on the 192.168.4.x network.

After a bit of reading on intra-vlan routing for the SG 300 switch, I am thinking the SG 300 has to be the "center" of things so I need to make it 192.168.4.1 to be the gateway for both VLANs and change the ASA to 192.168.4.2 for VLAN1, etc. And I really can't do asymmetric routing with this switch.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3560G - How To Setup Per Vlan Routing

May 14, 2013

I'm trying to set up per vlan routing on a 3560G switch but it's not performing as I would expect. I've got a server on the 109 vlan with a 10.1.9.100 address and a default gateway of 10.1.9.1 this address is an HSRP gateway and currently resides on 10.1.9.7. When I traceroute through to my user PC on the internal network it receives a response from 10.1.9.7 However, it is then denied by an ACL on the internal firewall which has been applied to interface Eth0/0. It should arrive at the firewall on Eth0/2.109 as it has the 10.1.9.4 address.

My goal here is to route traffic on the 101 vlan to a seperate interface on the internal firewall from 109 vlan traffic. I'm either doing something wrong or these routing commands aren't designed to work in the way I'm expecting (I couldn't find any documentation on the ip route command where it is followed by different gateways for different vlans)

interface GigabitEthernet0/12
description Internal-FW Eth0/2
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport trunk allowed vlan 109
