Cisco Wireless :: 5508 Wireless APs Going Down Randomly
May 14, 2012
We have a situation where wireless access points are just going down randomly on our network. The situation is as follows:
We have 2 Cisco 5508 WLCs (licensed for 250 APs each, with more licenses en-route), both running software version 7.2.103.0. Then we have a large-ish number (±300) of Cisco AIR-CAP3502I-E-K9 APs connecting to these two controllers. The APs are either connected to Cisco WS-C2960S switches, or in "older" areas of the network they are connected to WS-C2950 switches. We do not have PoE switches installed yet, so all APs are powered by power injectors (AIR-PWRINJ4=).
Anyhaw, all the access points are in FlexConnect (previously HREAP) mode, and they all connect via trunk ports to the switches in order to get the VLAN per SSID working. Both controllers are in the same mobility group, and both are in the DNS as "cisco-capwap-controller" as they are load balancing. The APs are installed about 25m apart in most areas. There is one installation where two APs are about 10m apart, but this is due to the shape of the building in which they are installed. We have no autonomous APs deployed at all...
The problem is that some access points work for about a day, and then they just disassociate with whichever controller they were associated to, and then they just fall off the network completely. Both WLCs, the NCS, and the network monitoring system (WhatsUp Gold) show the affected APs as physically unreachable. Looking at the trunk port on the switch, it shows that the port is up and the line protocol is up, input rate is 0 bits/sec, and output rate is up to 70,000bits/sec. There are no input or output errors on the switch port. Here is the output from one such switch port: [code]
Connecting a console cable to an affected AP is fruitless, as the AP appears to be unresponsive while it is "down". Rebooting the AP, then connecting a console cable works, but then you've lost your syslogs. Looking at the Ethernet interface on the AP, it appears as if the interface is picking up a lot of errors, especially CRC errors, which would indicate a physical cable problem.
I got our cabling contractor out to do a cable test again, and it passes every time. We have them test both the Systimax and the Molex cable installations of affected APs, and all is OK. They use a Fluke MicroScanner² cable tester which certifies the Cat 6 cable from patch lead to flylead. No problems there, and I trust that the cable is 100% as tested.
So I swap the power injector of an affected AP (let's call it AP A) with an AP that is not affected by this (let's call this one AP B), and AP A goes down again after a day, or sometimes only a couple of hours. AP B remains operational as usual. If I swap AP A out with a new AP (AP C), then AP C starts showing the same symptoms after about a day, and then it also just goes down. When "suspect" AP A is installed somewhere else, then it works and stays operational for, well, 58 days now. Changing the switch/switch port also makes no difference.
This happens to one of the APs that are part of the "10m apart deployment", but it also happens to another AP that is completely on its own in a building far away from any other wireless source, so I cannot think that this could be the problem. I happens to an AP that is less than 100m away from its closest WLC, and it happens to an AP that is more than 350km away from its closest controller. All the other APs deployed in our remote campus (350km fibre link) are 100% OK. It happens to APs connected to the older WS-C2950 switches as well as the brand new WS-C2960S switches.
I am at wits end with this one. Where could the problem be? I trust the "Big Green" company that does our cable installations, and I trust the equipment they use. I also trust both Systimax and Molex to be very good products. And I do trust Cisco, as this is the only network equipment we deploy.

I am currently using a 5508 Cisco WLC with software version 6.0.196.0. It has been running smoothly for the past 1.5 years, but have recently discovered that the WLC will randomly restarts itself. I know this because I have seen the disruptions in our wireless network, as well as seen the Up time counter reset itself. I have tried looking at the trap logs to see if there is any significant network traffic that may be causing this, but from what I can tell there is nothing out of the ordinary. The restarts happen randomly at random times. I have never seen a Cisco device behave this way, not a switch, a router or security appliance for that fact. What may be causing the WLC to just reboot itself?

I am at one of our remote offices and I am noticing my laptop, despite excellent signal strength is periodically losing IP connectivity on the wireless network. When it drops, all of my IP connectivity stops (pings fail, RDP sessions "await reconnection", etc...). The lower right corner still shows I'm connected to the hidden WPA2 Enterprise SSID. The only way to reconnect is to select disconnect on it, then click connect again. Immediately everything IP based starts working.
There is a 5508 controller in the headquarters. The site I am at has a 30mbps fiber point to point WAN to the headquarters. This site has 2 x 3300 series LAPs which are very good coverage. H-REAP mode is on so traffic terminates at the local office because it is more efficient than traversing the LAN twice for things like local file and print sharing, dhcp, proper active directory sites and services mapping, etc.

I have two notebooks, one smartphone, and one blu-ray player that connects to my wireless network. My gaming PC is hard wired into the same router that broadcasts my wireless network. About 5-6 times, my wireless network will drop and everyone connected to it wirelessly will lose their connection for about 1-2 minutes. While my gaming PCs internet connection is undisturbed, all of my wireless devices can no longer "see" the network SSID and therefore connect to it. The problem has been happening consistently for many months.

I've tried two different brands of wireless network adapter now: a Netgear and a Belkin. They've both had the same issue.I'm running Windows 7, and the network connection will just randomly drop out. If I unplug and plug in the adapter, the network will reappear and it will connect to the internet just fine, until the next time it drops out.

I tried setting up the wireless at my mom's house, and she has the following hardware:Motorola SB4220 Surfboard ModemNetgear RangeMax WPN824 RouterAll computers run Windows, XP or VistaAlso, when I go to Control Panel -> Network Connections, under "Local Area Connection" it says "Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC". I guess that's a driver, but I don't know what that means. The wireless works, but it turns off and on randomly every couple of seconds, so anyone using it has to keep refreshing pages until it catches a signal. Here's something I think might show where the cause is: when I go to Control Panel -> Network Connections, it usually shows "LAN or High Speed Internet", but sometimes it also shows "Internet Gateway", and the following:

About twice a day (that I notice) my wireless loses its internet connection. All the wired machines continue to be connected to the internet but any wireless ones lose internet, though they maintain a connection with the router.

My wireless adapter keeps turning off randomly on my HP G60 120EM.
It will have my connection strength icon on the icon tray and then just randomly display an adapter with a red cross through it.I have made sure that the adapter is not set to turn off on power save but still the problem persists.I thought it could be the adapter being loose inside the laptop but if i give the laptop a small shake it doesn't disconnect and I opened up the laptop and everything seems fine. This is where it gets a bit strange. If I close the laptop lid then open it again, the wireless is fine, but will drop off again about a minute later.

After many weeks of working well, with no problem, the router started to randomly disconnect 2 days ago and since then it happens few times during the day.I haven't changed anything in the setting for more than 1 month so I really don't understand why it happens.Yesterday, my fiancee was using the laptop and me the desktop when the connection dropped only for my PC, because hers was still working.Today it happened already 2 times and I would like to know how can I solve this issue. I must remind everybody that I a beginner when it comes to configuring the wireless router.

I am currently picking up off a friends internet connection. Every day it seems to randomly kick off. I have tried a few troubleshoot fixes and none have worked. This has only happened with my friends connection before my wireless worked just fine. Is there a way to fix it from crashing?

My wireless internet will randomly shut off, roughly every other day. It will shut up and say that my wireless router needs to be reset, but all other wireless devices continue to work throughout the house. I could run any amount of diagnostic but it will not fix. The only time it fixes it when it says "repair as administrator" as one of the options in diagnostic test which does not always appear. I went to school yesterday, and my laptop would not connect to the wireless network there at all, but everyone else around me connected fine.

We have a situation with 20 4410N's They are connected through a 2960 switch. They runned for about a year with no problems. We use the WiFi system with 10 cisco wireless ip phones, several workstations (5-10) and a few mobile devices.
Three weeks ago we took 10-15 iPads in commission (almost equally divided over the AP's), since then the trouble started. Several accesspoints stop randomly responding a few times a, day. We updated to the latest firmware (2.0.4.2), but that did not solve the problems.
Were using 3 SSID's WPA2 encryption and fixed IP's for the AP's. If we can't get a hold on this we have to replace all the AP's by other ones.

My internet works fine but after a random period of time, usually 20-30 minutes the internet stops responding. I have ran a diagnostics test using the Intel PROset/wireless tools program and it states on the ping test that there is no response from the default gateway and the DHCP server.

My wireless connection randomly drops, or has no Internet connection, or says it has connection and Internet but no web pages load. Usually, what happens is it says I have no Internet connection. I have to disconnect and reconnect to get the Internet back. My ethernet connected computer never loses connection.
I am running Windows 7 with a Realtek wireless card. I have updated the driver to the latest. The wireless router is a D-Link 615 e1 using DD-WRT. The router is hooked up to a Brighthouse Arris TM402G/110 modem for internet access (note: this is my second modem. I had the same problem with another modem. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name.)
When the router is connected to a U-Verse 2Wire 3800HGV modem/wireless router (with the wireless turned off) I have no Internet disconnections. Everything else is the same (I just move the Ethernet cable between the two modems). Of course, one is just a modem and the other is a NAT router/modem.
I noticed that the wireless connection has a weaker signal when connected to the Brighthouse modem then when connected to the U-Verse modem. I therefore tried to up the TX signal strength on the router. This improved the situation (and the signal strength) but I still get disconnects. I also tried setting the MSS to 1492.

I have a 2Wire 2701HG-B modem/router provided to me by AT&T for my DSL service. I have one issue and a seperate question sort of related to it.The issue I'm having is that whenever a laptop gets online with wireless internet the modem will randomly reset connection. Some times it will do it every 30 seconds, some times it will be once an hour or even more.It works perfectly fine on any laptop when plugged in with Ethernet cable but only with wireless it will glitch out. It does this whether it is the only computer online on the network, and also when there are a few others online so it's just the simple fact of the wireless resetting it somehow.I've done lots of google searching and some people say changing the line pair settings fixed it for them. Some say changing from b/g mode to just g mode fixed it. I've tried every thing that I've come across and nothing has worked so far. Apparently this is a very common problem for this model I just can not find the right solution that has worked for other people, to work for me as well.
if I were to want to make this modem/router just a modem and hook up my own router for N wireless would this be possible? I know I've read ways about putting combos in DMZ mode or something but I don't really know what I'm looking for because everything is worded different in this modem's settings. Can any one provide any insight as to if this is possible, and if it's even worth it to do so? Mainly worried about the first thing I mentioned though, this is just a side note.

I have a DIR-625 router that has been acting odd lately. Several times a day at random my devices (laptop, android phones, PS3) will lose internet connectivity from my wireless network. They say they are still connected to the network but I am unable to access the internet or even the router config page. Everything works fine on Wired LAN computers. The only way I can fix it is by unplugging the router for a few seconds. I have had the router for over a year now without this problem. Seems like it may have started when we got our android phones.

Up until recently (4 months ago) my network was fine. However, all of a sudden the network began to drop randomly. Now, the network drops about every 30 mins. Its quite an inconvenience, especially as there are two laptops, a desktop and 2 games consoles running off of the network (not all at once though). I have a Belkin Wireless G Plus MIMO router.

Wireless router started randomly not allowing any wireless devices to connect to the network. A wired cable worked fine, but not wireless. So we had to unplug the router and then it would work fine. You could see the device, but not connect. We moved our wireless phone a little farther away from the router thinking it was interfering, but still no luck. It didn't matter if it was an iPod, our BluRay player, or a laptop.

Yesterday when I got home from college my computer randomly could not connect properly to my wireless modem. It tells me the SSID etc but when I connect to it, it becomes an unidentified network and has no internet connectivity. This problem only occurs on my laptop via wifi, wifi still works fine on other computers and my phone so I assume it is a problem on my laptops end. Also my laptop can connect to other wireless networks, ie my schools public network, and they work fine. I'm running windows 7 home premium.

Wireless clients drop off Netgear router - Running a Netgear router in home. Have one desktop PC, 2 printers, 1 Mac and 3 Windows laptop connected. The devices that connect wirelessly will drop of the router in a random way. One printer, an HP all in one, will no longer function and I have to pull the plug to de-energize and restart it. My wireless network is a mess. I have called Netgear and for the first two months they had me change channels and adjust other settings which seemed to work at first but then these symptoms all came back.

My TD-W8970 freezes randomly, sometimes several times a day, sometimes less, but now the problem it's more frequent and I suppose it could be generated by some internal component that could have a abnormal behavior.Anyway, this happens in different situations, either using all the functionalist, or being only on and in idle state. Last time was few minutes ago, when all the system were shuttled down and only router was on.

I recently purchased the Linksys E1500 and at first, had no problems with it. The last few days I've had issues however. I tried logging into the internet and my WIRED computer would not connect. My wifes WIRED computer next to mine didn't have any trouble connecting. Resetting my computer didn't work. I had to cycle the router by unplugging it! Then today, my (2) kids are using Pandora on their (2) computers wirelessly, and same set up with my wifes computer and mine, and again only my computer looses access from the router and all other computers stay connected.

My computer is a desktop in a differet part of the house, away from the main computer. My computer is hooked up with an AE1000 Wireless USB. This USB is wirelessly connected to a Netgear Extender (Repeater) for a better signal strength. This Repeater is wirelessly connected to the router on the other side of the house, plugged into the main computer.
So my problem is, when im working on my computer or gaming on my free time, it randomly disconnects. My signal has a (!) inside of a triangle at the bottom right of my screen. I run the automatic troubleshoot on my Win 7, and it says either "DNS server not responding" or "Your computer is working properly, but some of your devices are not responding". Other times it works just fine and i run troubleshoot alot and it doesnt find a problem. Some days its running at 144 Mbps others 6.5...
I have checked that all of the devices are uptodate. .I've contacted GeekSquad and they said there was no problem. But obviously for them to connect to my computer the wireless has to be working, so they didnt find anything because it worked for the time being.I'm just woundering are there any capability issues with my wireless? Or any other problems im not aware of?

About a month ago, my E2000 Cisco Router stopped working, just after warranty expired (how awesome!) where as either WiFi worked or Wired but not both. I know Cisco will normally grant you a grace period (from experience) but sending it to the Czechs and pay for postage.. wait 4 weeks and then have internet again.. is not an option (did that last time)So this time.. I spend a bit more and bought the E4200. 4 weeks later, the IP changes from a 192 to a 17x .. pretty anoying when being abroad and needing to access the NAS since you do not know what IP it took.. I restored the config upon return.. and all seemed normal again and I left for the next trip. One day later (today).. again.. no connection.. wife has internet she says.. so again the same issue.. the **bleep** thing took another IP.

First a bit of background. At the end of December, my centurylink modem finally had enough problems with disconnects(was 6 or 7 years old), and Centurylink sent out a new router/modem. The new modem/router, a Zyxel, worked great, and all was good in my house hold. Then I got the bill and found out that unlike the previous modem they had sent me, this one I was paying a lease payment for. At which point I returned the Zyxel which gave us the best service we'd ever had, and bought this TD-W8960N. The reviews were glowing, setup was easy, but we started rather quickly to have disconnects. A call was made to Centurylink and they confirmed service was working, and since the modem/router was not theirs, referred us back to you. I called and after considerable time on the phone, all I was basically told to do was a hard reset to the modem. When the unit finished booting back up, internet was restored. Of course it was restored everytime we reset it for a while. At that point I was told that since the unit was working, that there was nothing left to be done. Since that time, it has disconnected us from time to time, and then in the last 2 days, sometimes it won't stay connected for more than a couple of minutes. My wife is very unhappy-she is a gamer, and a disconnecting internet is very very bad for an online gamer.
It seems that the further it gets away from a hard reset, the more it disconnects. After 6 soft resets (unplugging) today, I had to do another hard reset to get back on to register here and post this message. Is this a known problem for this unit? Is there a fix for this unit? Or, do I just need to return it to Newegg and try another manufacturer?
Again, the "leased" Zyxel gave us no problems for the month or so that we used it.
