Cisco Wireless :: 5508 Can't Add 3600 Series AP To Group

Jul 22, 2012

I have an AP group on a Cisco 5508 WLAN controller.  Currently, it is populated with 13 Cisco 1142 lightweight access points.  When I try to add a Cisco 3602i access point to the group, I get the following error in NCS: Error: OfficeExtend requires primary, secondary, or tertiary controller management IP to be set.I am using DNS to allow my AP's to find the controller and they work just fine.  Is there a reason I can't add the 3600 series AP's to the AP group?

Cisco Wireless :: Adding 3600 Series To WLC 5508?

Mar 26, 2013

I have a 5508 controller with a bunch of 3600 Series APs. I did all the basic config on the controller and added all the APs through distribution port #1. Now I was trying to config a second interface ( port #2) and use it for the Guest SSID on a separate VLAN. After I rebooted the controller, it dumped all the APs. I would like to know if this is normal, If I need to enroll the APs everytime I reboot the controller.

Cisco Wireless :: Adding 3600 Series AP To 4404 WLAN?

Jun 3, 2012

I've got a client who purchased numerous 3600 series AP's (3602i to be exact) and would like to add them into their WLAN 4404 controller. They're currently on 5.x system code so I plan on getting them upgraded to the latest 7 code.

They currently have a number of AP's adding and working fine. Once the WLAN controller is upgraded, does anything specific need to be done within the WLAN gui to add in these new 3600 series AP's?

Cisco Wireless :: 5508 WLC Code Upgrade / WCS AP 3600?

May 8, 2012

i'm going to upgrade a 5508 wlc code from 7.0.116.0 to 7.1.91.0 to add 3600 series access points having it all manageable via WCS ver 7.0.230.0 it seems to be possible, as it is explained in the compatibility matrix found on [URL]now I have to download the file to the controller...

AIR-CT5500-K9-SPECIAL-7-1-91-0.aes
(direct update possible)

before doing that I'd like to know if I will loose my configuration on the controller i'm concerned about that because the release document is not clear:

- We highly recommend that you back up your controller's configuration files prior to upgrading the controller software. Otherwise, you must manually reconfigure the controller.

- For busy networks, controllers on high utilization, or small controller platforms it is advisable to disable the 802.11a/b/g networks as a precautionary measure.

- Step 5 Disable any WLANs on the controller.
- Step 19 Re-enable the WLANs......
- Step 22 If desired, reload your latest configuration file to the controller. (reload config after reenabling wlans?another controller  another question .....: a cisco wlc 2100

found 2 update files

AIR-WLC2100-K9-7-0-230-0-ER.aes
AIR-WLC2100-K9-7-0-230-0.aes

why 2 update files this time? what file to update first?

Cisco Wireless :: 3600 / 5508 - Access Points And Controller

Apr 11, 2013

We have an MPLS (layer 3) network 4 offices and a Data center. We are planning to install about 10 Access Points(3600 series) per office and have a controller(5508 series) in the Data center.

Questions:

1- Is this design possible, in other words, just one controller centralizing all Access point traffic in one controller in the Data center?

2- We would like to accomplish this in two phases:
A- install access points without controller handling authentication thru Microsoft IAS servers (current configuration with 1200 series)
B- Deploy wireless Controller in Data center and start migrating orphan AP to Controllers one office at a time.

Cisco Wireless :: WLC 5508 With 3600 And 2600 AP - Client Down / Session Timer Is Turned Off

Apr 9, 2013

I have a strange issue with clients connected to a WiFi network.I have configured AP in FlexConnect mode and 2 SSID's. After a reboot of the AP the network is stable for almost 45 mins. Then each client will go UP and Down, mostly with a delay of 5 mins.

What could be the source of this. The clients are Windows CE handheld with fixed IP adres. I already configure persitent client and have play arround with APR timers as well. Thereby an Windows desktop or an iPad has less connectivity issues but even they expert pakcteloss once in severall minutes.

Session timer is turned off

The iPad for example can play music, but each 5 mins you hear a little hickup and 2 subsecond ping are loss.

Controller version is 7.3

Cisco :: Design Will Include 5508WLC And 3600 Series Access Points?

Apr 11, 2013

We are re-designing our wireless network and are navigating the security options. Are design will include a 5508 WLC and 3600 series APs. We plan on breaking our wireless out into four VLANS.Is 802.1x the standard for wireless authentication? What EAP flavor would you recommend for wireless? We will be supporting an environment with a variety of mobile devices (iPhone, iPad, HP tablets, Dell laptops, etc.). We will also be supporting wireless Cisco VoIP phones. Someone suggested choosing between EAP-Fast or EAP-PEAP, does this seem reasonable? Also, if we want to authenticate users using their AD account, we need to have NPS running on the AD server and use the radius protocol from client to server, is that right?

Cisco Wireless :: Migrating 2 Standalone 5508 To One Mobility-group

Jan 23, 2012

for some reason our wlan-controllers were build up to be standalone instead of beeing one mobility-group. I would like to change this in order to use all features of HA.

let me describe our scenario: two WLCs 5508 running SW ver. 6

- same subnet

- both are running in master controller mode

- different hostnames, ip-addresses, etc

- all settings for WLANs and AP-groups (exept the APs themselves in these groups) are the same

- in total at this moment we are running around 100 LAPs configured one half on WLC#1, the other half on WLC#2

I don't know exactly why, but when that setting was installed, someone already configuredHA for each accesspoint... e.g.:

- AP#1 primary WLC#1, secondary WLC#2

- AP#2 primary WLC#2, secondary WLC#1 but without WLC#2 knowing the configuration for AP#1 it makes no sense, correct?

so my question is: how should I do the migration in the best way?
is it easy as:

- disabling master controller mode on WLC#2

- configuring both WLCs into one mobility group

--> WLCs are negotiating their configurations for the APs

Cisco Wireless :: 1042 LAP With 5508 Series Controller - AP Will Not Associate

Jun 11, 2012

I have a 5508 WLC licensed for 100 APs.  I have 1 - 1042 LAP connected for testing.  I have DHCP configured for the AP, and it gets an address of 192.168.254.100/24 - the controller's management interface is 192.168.254.99/24.  I can see that the AP is getting an IP and I can ping it from the controller.  However, I simply do not see the AP associating.  I enabled capwap debiugging and watched the events, but I didn't see anything crazy that clued me in.  What am I doing wrong?

The controller is v6.0.199.4

Every time I have set these up in the past they have been pretty straight forward.  I haven't gotten too deep into the config on the WLC becuase I don't want to cause more issues.

Cisco :: 5508 Separate RF Group For Every Location

Mar 5, 2012

I'm looking for some input on RRM.  I personally have NOT used it in a LONG TIME, since probably the 4.0 days and then very shortly due to massive issues it was causing and admittedly, in part due to my ignorance at the time.  So, every since that point, I have always set all my channels and power manually but now feel I am getting to some points where RRM may be required / beneficial.  So, I've invested some time and have begun researching and trying to get the ends and outs on it but I'm forseeing a potential issue in myworld anyways and am hoping for some clarification.  Lets take the below example:

-WLC5508a and b - (2 100ap license controllers) - these hold the majority of the AP's for the main hospital.Lets say, 140AP's.

-WLC5508c and d - (1 100ap and 1 50ap licensed controllers) -  These tend to hold our smaller sites and and buildings, not all connected and some a few miles from each other

-WLC4402a and b - (failover ready)

So, with RRM, I can set setting it up on the 5508A/B with out issue as this is one big large building. However, what about C and D?  I suppose I can make them a separate RF Group, but how would RRM respond when it has16 AP's in Building X and then 3 AP's in Building Y 30 AP's in Building Z and sporadic buildings with 1's and 2's?  Everything I've read so far, leads me to believe if these devices are separated it probably won't be an issue, however, I just don't want something causing a change in Building Z and Building X be affected because RRM decided it would try to fix it. My point is, I can't afford to have a separate RF Group (meaning separate controllers) for every location.

Cisco :: WLC 5508 AP Group - Clients Using Wrong VLAN

Feb 14, 2011

I have a network setup as live-ssid.  It is using the Interface for VLAN 14.  All APs under the default-group AP Group obviously allows clients to DHCP an address from VLAN 14.  This is working fine.

I created a new AP Group called 3rd Floor.  This has the live-ssid setup, but instead of using the Interface for VLAN 14 it is setup for the Interface for VLAN 50.  I have all the APs on this floor moved to the 3rd Floor AP Group.

The problem is that 95% of the clients on 3rd Floor are still picking up DHCP addresses from VLAN 14.  I checked and all the clients are connected to the APs on the 3rd Floor.  Only 4 Clients are getting an address from VLAN 50.

I'm not sure if something is configured wrong or not since some devices pick up the new VLAN and the rest don't.  I've manually reboot the APs on the 3rd floor to see if that would fix it.

Cisco :: 5508 - Mobility Group To Match On Internal WLC?

Feb 1, 2012

I am setting up officeexten. I have placed the officeextend wlc in the dmz with an mgmt ip of 192.168.10.2. in the process of anchoring this to the internal wlc. Also the ip on the firewall for this interface is 192.168.10.1

1. does the mobility group need to match the same on the internal wlc ?

2. Now do i need a NAT transnational on the firewall for the external WAN ip (AP primed address say 66.10.10.10) to NAT back to 192.168.10.2 ?

3. The 5508 WLC is running on ver6.0.199.4 (license level base) - will this support office extend?

Cisco :: Getting Disconnected Randomly - 5508 Controller / 3300 Series LAPs

Jan 7, 2013

I am at one of our remote offices and I am noticing my laptop, despite excellent signal strength is periodically losing IP connectivity on the wireless network.  When it drops, all of my IP connectivity stops (pings fail, RDP sessions "await reconnection", etc...).  The lower right corner still shows I'm connected to the hidden WPA2 Enterprise SSID.  The only way to reconnect is to select disconnect on it, then click connect again.  Immediately everything IP based starts working.

There is a 5508 controller in the headquarters.  The site I am at has a 30mbps fiber point to point WAN to the headquarters.  This site has 2 x 3300 series LAPs which are very good coverage.  H-REAP mode is on so traffic terminates at the local office because it is more efficient than traversing the LAN twice for things like local file and print sharing, dhcp, proper active directory sites and services mapping, etc.

The following image was downloaded: ap3g2-k9w7-tar.152-2.JA

The release notes say: Site-Survey Only Mode for 3600, 3500, and 1550 Access Points You can install Cisco IOS Release 15.2(2)JA on Cisco Aironet 3600 and 3500 Series access points and on 1550 series outdoor access points to perform site surveys. This release runs on these access points with limited functionality. You can manually adjust these settings on the site-survey access points:

• Channel on each radio
• Transmit power on each radio
• Enable and disable the radios
• Manually set basic and supported transmit rates
• Enable advertised cell power in beacons to client to enable DTPC for doing active surveys
• Enable and disable SSID broadcast in beacons
• Enable open authentication

My Question is: Where can i find a instruction for downgrading an AIR-CAP3602i to Autonomous 3600 AP? Is it complicate to get the AP running, or what do i need for "downgrading"?

The below is the sample topology. But real topology contains nearly 200 AP's(3600 series) and 20 access switches and so on.....So there is a chance of 200 AP * 350 Mbps can flow on the distribution layer. So ,
