Cisco Wireless :: AIR-WLC2106-K9 Configuring Wireless LAN Controller
Mar 13, 2012
I bought 6 air-lap1042n-a-k9 for our business. They are mounted. I bought a Cisco POE switch for them. I hooked them up and realized they needed a Wireless LAN Controller. I have never dealt with these before. From my research, I need to buy AIR-WLC2106-K9.Can I just connect my POE switch to the LAN Controller to configure all 6 access points that are connected to the POE switch?

I am in the process of building a small educational lab. I just want to make sure that I am not going to have any AP registration/join issues due to regulatory compatibility with a AIR-WLC2106-K9 controller and a AIR-LAT1142N-N-K9 access point. Will this work and if so, will I then be in the clear as far as having devices like my computer and phone attach to the SSID?

We have recently installed Cisco for our wireless solution. We are an education and are looking to let staff and pupils bring their own devices. The route that we are planning to take to let them join the school's WiFi is to implement a RADIUS server so that they can authenticate with their Active Directory username and password. I have tried to test the solution but so far without any success. I am using a Windows Server 2008 R2 as my NPS server, I have setup the Cisco controller as per below:
Security Tab | RADIUS | Authentication - I added my windows server there and the preshared key, the Network User and Management is ticket and the server responds to a ping command,In the WLANs Tab, I selected my test WLAN and under Security | AAA Servers I selected the RADIUS server that I configured in the Security TabI then try to logon to my test WLAN and on the Cisco WLAN controller I get the following error: AAA Authentication Failure for UserName:test User Type: WLAN USER
Before trying to tinker with policies on the Windows Server I was wondering if the RADIUS is correctly setup on the Controller or have I missed something obvious?

We have 4 1142N LAPs that I want to divide between an internal wireless and a guest wireless network using the controller. Currently all of the APs are on an established internal network, but I want to migrate one over to a test guest network before buying more LAPs to augment the networks further. Currently the port connecting to the WCS from the 3560 switch is configured as an access port using VLAN 10. Whenever I make it a trunk port carrying VLAN 10 as well as the other ports we will be using for the guest and ap-manager networks, I lose connection with the controller. To me this implies that the port on the controller is configured as an access port as well. In the documentation I found for the controller it states that by default the ports are al configured to be trunks, but it appears as though something was changed by the previous tech. All of the APs are connected to other switches, not to the controller itself.
1) How can I get the port on the controller back to being a trunk port
2) Can I use the internal DHCP server for the guest network if the subnet is different than the management subnet, or will I have to use another external server and relay/proxy it through the controller to give guest clients IP addresses?

I've just bought an AIR-WLC2106-K9 and 3 x AIR-LAP1142N-E-K9 and I'm having a problem getting the AP's configured.
Firstly, the controller did not discover the device when it was on the same sub net, I had to plug it straight in which is no good for wireless-n due to the 100Mbps port speed on the controller. Secondly, when I am editing the AP through the controller webpage, none of the details are saved after applying changes (static IP etc).
I followed the Cisco quick start guide for the controller to get the basic config, radius server details etc in. It is running software version: 4.2.61.0

we have the WLC and 2 x Aironet AP's that is powers over PoE. The other day is was reloaded and since then the AP points are Blinking Red, according the the Aironet manaul this means some sort of boot error? They are also not appearing on the WLC from the GUI or CLI running a show ap summary. Interesting though I can see them via CDP, however they are not picking up IP's as they are listed as 0.0.0.0. After checking with colleagues I was told these were set statically.
Is it possible that the points not having IP addresses is a sign of a corrupt boot environent? I would have though they would not have appeared in CDP if they were corrupt?
I did not set this up in the first place so a little puzzled at the moment? Nothing has changed on the config bar using a different NTP server on the network?

I have a WLC2106 and AP3502i. The issue that I am having is the radio for 5GHz is not showing up in "Wireless > 802.11a/n" (see attached screenshot) I am not exactly sure what was the problem. When I went to 802.11b/g/n I do see an entry for 2.4Ghz radio, but nothing on 5GHz.
I have the AP plugged directly to my 3550POE, and when I used the command "show power inline" it says that the switch is providing 15.4W and there is still 345W remaining on the switch. The LED on the AP is solid green. I issued a no shutdown on dot11radio1 and the status is up/up, but there is still no entry under "Wireless > 802.11a/n"

These are only occuring for clients that are disconnecting....
They can reconnect after a WLC reboot....
We have swapped APs.....
I have seen this error in other forums but it says not to worry about it. There has to be a connection between this and clients getting disconnected. We have anywhere between 10-50 clients on the system at any one time.Is this a client issue (nic firmware, version) or is this an error in the controller??

I know that the 3600 series APs are not supported on the 4404 WLC. However, would the following scenario be supported? I would like to use the 4404 (software rel. 7.0) as a guest anchor with a 5508 (software release 7.2) as the foreign controller supporting series 3600 APs. I ask because the APs do not need to join the guest anchor.

Will there be any issue if the anchor controller is not the same code as the foreign controller? Do I also have to upgrade the acnhor controller to 7.0.240.0?

We are trying to navigate the waters in choosing between a in-house, controller-based, wireless network solution or a cloud-based solution. We have been presented with the usual suspects in cloud-based (Aerohive, Meracki, etc) and with Cisco (5500) and Aruba on the other side. We are a multi-campus organization with approx. 200 APs.Any hard reasons why go with a controller-based vs. cloud-based solution? If we must keep the conversation limited to Cisco, why go Meracki over Cisco's WLC solutions or vise versa?

I am looking to configure a wired and wireless guest network. I have industrial barcode scanners that connect to one SSID and then there is the business network on the office SSID (no vlan seperation for these devices just different SSIDs). There is not really a need to seperate the business network from the scanners in any case. However, there are needs for a guest network and this needs to be seperated. At the bare minumum I would like to have the wireless guest network. Here is what I have: 2125 Wireless LAN controller managing 18 LAPs (1 indoor and 17 outdoors)Cisco Cat 2950 switches (2 x 24 port and soon to be replaced with 2 x 48 port 2960's with 802.1x capability) Sonicwall TZ210 firewallOne existing wired and trunked vlan for PLC infrastructure. One ESXi hosting Windows server guests (soon to be 2 with vMotion) The reason for the wired guest access network is tp prevent anyone from plugging into the wall jack in the office with thier home laptops or anyone else from being on the same subnet as our domain machines. Granted they would be unathenticaed but there would be no layer 2 seperation and that is what I think would be best.
How would I go about doing this on the wireless controller without an anchor controller just using my existing hardware? I would like to have the Guest SSID only availible in the front office. Is it possible to offer a guest network while still servicing the business network SSID on the same access point? Then might I be able to have the guest network be treated as it should at the controller? However this might present another issue altogether as the guest traffic will be over the same wire as the business SSID until it hits the controller for management.

I have been trying to get Airprint to work in our network. Topology is a 255.255.255.254.x network that has mostly wired with wireless all under the same subnet. Airprint will not discover printers if on the WLC2106 WiFi network but if the iPad or iPhone is connected to some small Linksys WiFi router, it works.
What should be enabled or disabled on the WLC2106 to get Airprint to work?

I'm considering purchasing the "Cisco Linksys - E1200 Wireless-N Router with 4-Port Ethernet Switch". Before I do, however, I want to know how to configure it as a wireless bridge to my existing wireless network.I have a hardware device with only an ethernet connection (no wireless option avaialble). I want to connect the device to a wireless router / access point, in this case it would be the e1200, and then connect to my existing wireless network. The e1200 would be acting like a client of the existing network.I found this article but Step 8 is causing concern. I do not want a wired connection. The two routers must connect wirelessly.

Due to lack of wires we decided to extend our network by using WET546 bridge by linksys. Ideally we looking to create topology like this:
(Computer)--eth--(WET546)---wireless----(AP/WLC2100)---(router)---(Internet)
WET546 successfully authenticates and looks pretty healthy on controller (see below) , however neither of computers plugged to WET546 was unable to obtain ip address from dhcp server , nor working with static ip. I was under impression what it might be related to some default policies on WLC2100. Logs (warning) on WLC2100 looks clean.

We have a 2504 Wireless Controller and it works great! We currently have 6 Access Points (Aironet 1252) connected. We just added the sixth one a few weeks ago and with a properly configured and fully functioning Wireless Controller, it was super easy. Now, I have been assigned to add another Access Point, but at a remote site. The plan is to have up to three or more APs at this remote location and we want them to talk back to the Wireless Controller. We have plenty of licences on our current Wireless Controller.Do do not want to spend the funds for another Wireless Controller and more licenses.
1. How does one manually add a Aironet 1252 to the 2504 Wireless Controller
2. If the AP is on a different subnet than the Wireless Controller, how does one get it registered?
3. The best for last: Can a Aironet 1252 talk to a 2504 Wireless Controller over a WAN link?

** Unable to read "linux.bak.img" from ide 0:2 **
And it is taking me to the BootMenu. I selected option 4 to Clear Configuration and the controller seems to restart the system but I still get the same error. I checked the LEDs status and Sys is Amber and Alarm is OFF which according to the documentation is a System Crash.

We have two 4400 WLC's. We have around 20 access points in our network. If we assign controller1 as primary for half of the access points and controller 2 as primary for the other half, does this mean the association of the ap's indicate load balancing by the controllers. Does this mean wlc does load balancing as different ap's associate on different controllers. or does it only server as active-standby wlc.

I setup cisco wireless controller 2500 connecting 2 Aironet APs, with windows 2008 NPS as radius server (server certificate installed), via
[WPA2][Auth(802.1X)], MAC Filtering
Now I have domain computer (laptop) connected to SSID which provides direct to the LAN dhcp server. That means my notebook got same ip range as when it connected to LAN.
The user used cached domain logon info to logon the computer, then the wireless profile started to connect with radius server which has User group policy.
Problem is the notebook (logon as normal domain user) browse \"domain name" or any \hostname will take 10 mins or more to pop up with "enter network password" or sometimes "The specified netwrok name is no longer avail". However ever if I simply \192.168.2.x which is the host's ip address, I got list of share folders instantly.
And when I disable the wireless and connect to the LAN cable, I had no problem to browse any shared folders.

I'm using two cisco 1242 AG access points to configure WDS feature. I've named the accesspoints as AP1(acts as WDS) and AP2. Since I've only two accesspoints, I've configured the AP1 to act both as a WDS and as a regular accesspoints.Further I'm using the local radius server within the AP1 to authenticate both clients and infrastructure accesspoints. And both APs are connected to a router (which act as a dhcp server) via a unmanageble switch and both accesspoints are getting registered with WDS.But the issue is when I tried to connect to the configured SSID, it promts me a "authentication window" but after entering the configured username and password, i'm not getting authenticated by the AP.
I've attached the configurations of both APs to for your reference and I've used the following cisco document as a guideline to crate the WDS. [code]

2) Do I need to configure Mobility groups for this HA Cluster?

I've created two configurations. One for the router side and one for the AP point side. However, I am having trouble getting the internal AP to bridge to the router properly. It is my understanding that the Wlan-GigabitEthernet is the internal interface connecting to the AP and the BVI1 together. I can't ping any ip address on the router side from the ap and the radio is active and we can see it but it seems that it doesn't give an ip address. [code] Is it a VLan issue or an ip issue but I could use a second opinion. I've included both configurations.
