Cisco Wireless :: AP Direct Connection To 3850
Feb 13, 2013
APs must be directly connected to the 3850 for it to work in MA or MC mode. But if we add some switches and configure it to work transparently (without CDP/ VLAN tagging /LDP ) ? Do you think this is really not possible to make it? What impact CAPWAP tunnel gets from this transparent switch ?

I received a 5508 WLC, that I wanted to configure as a guest anchor for our DMZ. I stepped through the console configuration. Now that the setup is complete, can I attach my laptop directly to the copper SFP, and access the WLC web portal? I gave my laptop an IP address, in the same subnet, but still can't connect to the portal, or ping the WLC IP address.

I have been using a WRT610N router for several years. A couple of weeks ago I purchased an iPad 2. I am not sure if its a limitaion of the iPad 2 or a wireless connection speed issue, but when watching You Tube music videos the video stops frequently and I have to hit the play button again to resume. This occurs more often if I am using Blue Tooth connected headphones than direct connected headphones, leading me to the initial conclusion that I am witnessing the limits of the iPad 2 processor. However, I recently downloaded the Speed Test app and have discovered that the wireless download speed varies from about 11-15Mbps, depending on the location (normal vs next to router). If I go to that web site and run the speed test there from my direct connected PC (connected to 1Gbps port), I get a download speed typically of 36Mbps (inflated I know because Comcast speed supposedly is limited to 25 Mbps).

So from a security standpoint... PPTP through Windows RRAS then RDP to the server?,Open port 3389 to the server and rdp direct? would think that having a VPN out front would block people from attempting a connection, but if the VPN username and RDP username are the same, I feel like its about the same.

Dell Inspiron 518 I have a problem with my internet going direct to modem, it a constant problem with my internet. I use Internet Explorer 9 for my web browsing. I contact my ISP and they send in a technician to see if it was a problem with my modem, while the tech work on my modem he explain to me that there wasnt a problem with the modem. He showed a comparison with my computer and his laptop. when he used his laptop it show outstanding speed, and my computer was showing time out or webpage can't be displayed the only way i can use my computer for internet is if i boot up my computer and hold down F8 to go under safe mode with network and my internet works prefectly fine, i even try a ping testing under command prompt and website that test my ping, download speed and upload speed.

I just got another DCS-930L. I have set these up to work wirelessly before but my question is why can't I connect it directly to my ethernet port and be able to get into the web interface by typing the default IP address without using a utility or installation software? I have tried to assign a manual IP to it but that didn't work. So here is what I want to do: Plug the camera into the ethernet port of my MacBook Pro and just view what the camera sees.

Currently, my customer has 2 units of Cisco PIX 515E running on Active/Standby mode. As for the heartbeat link, there are 2 dedicated switches placed in between both the Cisco PIX 515E i.e. FW1 --> SW1 --> SW2 --> FW2.
My customer will be changing both the Cisco PIX 515E to Cisco ASA 5510. Now, they are asking me, since they will be using Cisco ASA 5510 eventually, can the heartbeat link be a direct UTP cross cable or must the 2 switches in between still exist?
I remember I have tested this before, few years back, in the event I were to pull out the UTP cross cable that's connecting both the Cisco ASA 5510 Firewalls directly (without any switches in between), the Active/Standby mode still works fine. It doesn't go bad whereby both the Cisco ASA 5510 suddenly becomes Active/Active, and causes network issue.
Are switches required for the heartbeat link in a Cisco ASA environment or can a direct UTP cross cable connection be adequate.

Currently have two laptops: one is a MacBook using OS X, the other a Gateway PC running Vista Home Edition. A Dell Inspiron 17R notebook running Windows 7 Home Premium is in process of delivery. Current laptops linked on a home Wi-Fi network with AirPort Express router. Anticipated use of new Dell notebook requires its direct connection to Internet outside of current network configuration. Is it possible to have both accesses available in my setup utilizing my one cable high speed service connection? If so, what are the steps needed to accomplish the required setup?

We have FIOS at our home. All the wall connections for ethernet are wired to the control panel in our house which are then connected to a wired router. We have another wireless router in the upstairs which gets internet through the wall port and it works fine.We had another downstairs wireless router in the living room that was working fine as well, but I reset it for certain reasons and it no longer works properly. All the proper lights light up: internet, port, power but the computer can only connect to the network and not the internet for some reason.

I bought new Lenovo IdeaCentre H430 pc and I'm having problem with high pings. Windows 7 with on-board realtek NIC. Fresh install, fully updated, drivers installed from included CD. When I start pinging router (direct 1Gb ethernet connection, 1 hop), pings start at <1ms (which is fine) and after a while they jump to 300-1000ms.
I loaded up live ubuntu to test if the problem might be in HW. It's not, in ubuntu pings were always <1ms.I also noticed that when I start using connection somehow, pings go down to 1ms, but go back up when I stop using it (tested by accessing live camera feed on LAN).
Power Options set to max performance. I disabled Interrupt Moderation on the NIC, didn't work.I tested it in the safe mode with networking, same problem there.
It slows down our client-server based programs, what's causing it. All I could google up was that disabling Interrupt Moderation would work, it didn't though.Computer is giving high pings to router when idle and normal pings when network is under load, it slows down our software significantly.

I am read this cisco document Cisco Catalyst 3850 Switch Services Guide
[URL]...
which describe that
L2 roam occurs when the user roams from an access point connected to its controller to a different access point connected to another controller, where the two controllers are L2 adjacent to each other.
L3 roam occurs when the user roams from an access point connected to its controller to a different access point connected to another controller, where the two controllers are L3 adjacent to each other.
so what exactly this mean the two controllers are L2/L3 adjacent to each other , what is the different between them.

I understand that Cisco *wants* the APs to be directly connected to the new 3850.I have a few questions. Unfortunately, I think I know the answers. I just want to confirm.
a. When MA/MC is enabled on the 3850, does the 3850 start intercepting *all* CAPWAP packets it sees (much like CDP)? Even non-Cisco CAPWAP packets?
b. If I have a WLC 5500 upstream from the 3850, would APs hanging off a downstream 2960 be able to register to the 5500 through the 3850 when the 3850 is NOT in MA/MC mode?
c. If I have a WLC 5500 upstream from the 3850, would APs hanging off a downstream 2960 be able to register to the 5500 through the 3850 when the 3850 IS in MA/MC mode?
What I'm afraid of is:
a. yes, yes
b. yes
c. no
From the Q&A page:Q. Does the Cisco Catalyst 3850 support indirectly connected access points?A. No. The Cisco Catalyst 3850 switch will always terminate the CAPWAP tunnel locally. Pass-through mode or indirectly connected access point is not supported at this time.

We are looking at doing some switch replacement. These switches will be in for ~7 years. We need POE for a VOIP phone system, and 10gb uplinks back to the core. We want to have the ability to go POE+ in the future.
We were quoted from our vendor for:WS-C3850-48P-S with 2x715w Power supplies. It looks like the data sheet says that to get POE+ you need 2x1100w or 1x1100w & 1x715w. Do we need to step up to the WS-C3850-48PF-S?

I'm trying to do password recovery on a Catalyst 3850 switch..I've read the section in this: url...where it says that I need to have physical access to the switch (I do), and that I reset the password if I issue a break command and interrupt the boot procedure. I've tried to do that... it gives me the "switch:" prompt, so I think I've interrupted the boot procedure successfully, but, what do I do next?I've successfully done recoveries on Catalyst 2950s, 3550s & 3560s, but the procedure for this one, if I'm reading the link above right, sounds like it's completely different.

I am trying to use the directv ipad app to watch/control my directv service. I am not able to see the DVR that is on my system. It is plugged directly into the router and the other receivers (and ipad) are wireless connecting through the same router.Direct TV says:
"For added security, some brands of routers treat Wi-Fi as separate from an Ethernet cable connection within the same router. If your HD DVR is connected to the router by Ethernet cable, and the iPad to the router via Wi-Fi, they may not see each other. Check your router manual as you may need to configure your setup."Can someone tell me if the WRT160N considers them as two separate networks when connected via wireless vs plugged in?

What is the preferred access switch for new deployment. Choosing between 3850 and 3750x. I have to say that the 3850 wireless features will not be used in this deployment and 4 switch for stack is enough... Looked and read everything that I found in the press, I can not make an informed choice. I bow to 3850, but I was apprehensive following circumstances:1) not too positive reviews2) to long list of open caveats3) to long list of features are not supported in Cisco IOS XE Release 3.2.0SE4) IOS XE : (With regard to the first three points - yes, I understand that the product is new and it has not gone further stage of "childhood diseases" ...Regarding the fourth point - I understand correctly that this is the direction to be moving Cisco Systems and soon all products migrate from classical IOS to IOS XE and so on?

With my brand new Cisco 3850 Switch, I got it configured with a LAN IP. Then, on my PC I opened up Cisco Network Assistant (version 5.8.5.1 which supports the 3850). I went to add the 3850 to the community by discovering the device, and was prompted with the user/pass box. The password I set was not allowing me to connect, and I realized it's because a username was required and I had not set up a username on the switch. So, I then configured an admin user with level 15 privileges on the switch. However, now when in CNA I try to add the 3850 to the community, it doesn't even prompt me for user/pass, it just says "unable to connect".
What do I need to do to add this 3850 to my community?

However I am presented with the Express Setup page and even if i fill in all of the details again and click submit then nothing happens and this is all I can get.
I have version 03.02.01SE software.

We have a new stack of two Catalyst 3850-48T's running IOS XE 3.02.00 (we are upgrading to 3.02.01 this weekend.)We noticed the CPU usage is around 30% even when there is almost no traffic going through the switch. We haven't seen any indication that it is causing a problem, but is this considered a normal baseline?I attached my config (with passwords sanitized,) show ver, show controllers utilization, and show process cpu history.
I noticed this behavior is normal on 2900XL/3500XL switches, but I didn't find anything relating it to 3850 switches. Does the same thing apply to the 3850 switches? [code] url...

I just completed installation of a stacked pair of 3850s in my datacenter. While I was installing them, I noticed that the lights on ports 1-8 on one of the switches were on solid even though there were no cables connected to that switch. I don't see anything in the logs or anywhere else in the CLI that indicate a problem, however the lights remain on. This only happens on switch 1, not switch 2. Once I plugged the cable into port 1, it flashes normally with activity, but 2-8 remain on solid even though nothing is connected to them.
Before I put the switches in place, I had configured them at my desk with the console connection, and those lights were not lit up.
The indicators on the front of both switches are set in STAT mode. I thought initially I had hit the button and flipped it to a different mode, but that is not the case.

I have a network coming up for a switch refresh. Management is pushing for 2960s and I would like 3850s. We are running Cisco Voice and Video over the network. I saw a few things that seemed to be in favor of a Layer 3 switch vs. a Layer 2 switch. Some items like better performance due to switching based on IP vs. switching based on MAC. Some information that will show the 3850 to be a better choice or that the 2960 is capable.

I pulled a brand new Cisco 3850 Switch out of the box yesterday. Following the Quick Start Guide, I put in the power module, powered it on, and waited for it to complete POST. Then, I plugged in an Ethernet cable between a laptop and the switch on a port in the front, and went to the web interface at https://10.0.0.1. I got to the Express Setup, and attempted to change the IP address of the switch to an IP on my LAN, along with other options. When clicking submit, it didn't appear to take. Upon refreshing in the Express Setup, the IP config was blank, so I once again configured it. This time clicking submit brought up a message that it was changing the IP address. I waited for it to finish, and when it looked done, I powered the switch off and took it to a different room to hook it up to the LAN for further configuration.
When plugging in the power at that point, the switch starts through the normal light process (System LED blinks green slowly), and then eventually the System LED blinks green very fast and never stops. It doesn't get to the point of having the system loaded and ready to log into. There's no amber lights, just the System LED flashing green fast. On the back, the Power module and all bay lights are green, and the Console light is green, but the Management port light is off.
I've tried using the reset button on the back of the switch two different times to reset it to default configuration, thinking I hosed it somehow, but it never goes past the fast blinking System LED.

Just updated my DTV to a HD receiver which has the ability to access movies/shows via internet so I hard wired my belkin router to the TV receiver and I can't get it to connect. The router light does not go on showing me I am not connecting to the TV receiver. When I go into the DTV receiver it reads all my IP address and has an OK behind them, but says there is an error and the internet is not connected. When I plug the same cable into my PC or my laptop the light on the router does come on. Also my iphone does receive WIFI via the same router. I called DTV and they said everything on the receiver is correct. I called my router folks and they said everything is correct and that it must be the DTV receiver. I've been using this router for several years and their tech guy sounded like he knew what he was doing. how I can get the router to recognize the TV receiver?

I have a client that is trying to use an ISP hosted web filtering and content management gateway, the ISP wants to use and L2L ISPEC VPN from the site to their gateway to control traffic. We got the tunnel up today with a test ACL for test client side devices to go down the tunnel, but they are blocking all traffic that isn't being scanned. The problem is they are on an ASA 5510 with 8.2.2. You cannot add tcp ports into the nonat ACL, it errors out when you try to apply the nat (inside) 0 access-list nonat statement. We can define ports to go down the VPN in the interesting traffic ACL with out issue, but there is no way to send just the web ports down the VPN, and allow other ports out the regular overflow interface NAT. I have been looking into 8.4 and seeing if it allows a policy NAT (twice NAT for the VPNs) to define a port on an IP range (IE: nat (inside, outside) source static WEBINSPECT WEBINSPECT destination static any any ) but define that as web ports only.I don't have a test ASA to use, but i'm guessing that l2l vpn will be by IP only and I can't define a port to tunnel.
