Cisco Wireless :: WLC 5508 To Use Apple Bonjour Service For Apple TV And IPads
Oct 22, 2012
A customer of ours has the following access points and wireless lan controllers on site. They want to use the Apple Bonjour service with Apple TV's and iPads. I have enabled multicast feature of the 5508 globally and one the SSID.The Apple TV has an ethernet connection and the iPads connect over the wifi. The Apple tv is on the same subnet as the iPad's - the Bonjour features do work for approx 5/10 minutes then it stops working for some reason. The Access Points plug into a Cisco 2960 Layer 2 switch, the 5508 controllers plug are in LAG mode and plug into a Nortel Layer 3 stack which I have enabled IGMP snooping.I've read that the Apple Bonjour service isnt designed to work on a multi subnet network - but both the Apple TV and iPad are connected on the same subnet. Sounds like some kind of timeout but not too sure.

I am using an Aironet 1142 standalone AP and want to use Apples Bonjour Service between iOS devices e.g. iPad and Apple TV.I have found here some posts that suggest to disable igmp snopping but this didn't worked for me.All devices are in the same vlan/subnet. Do I need to configure something special?

I have followed the details here as closely as I can:URL
I've upgraded to 7.4. I've enabled IGMP snooping, increased the time out, decreased the query/hello interval, went into Controller> menu and set AP Multicast Mode to Multicast with the Bonjour multicast range of 224.0.0.251.
Went into my WLAN and enabled Multicast VLAN Feature, and enabled my Multicast Interface as the same VLAN as the WLAN range.
The Lantronix Bonjour device is on the same VLAN as the WLAN (13). Accessing the Lantronix device shows it polling printers on our wired VLAN. However, no iDevice that joins the WLAN/SSID can find these printers.

Can the WRT110 forward Bonjour packets? I have one WRT110 running my home wifi network with firmware version 1.0.07. I've spent hours trying to get my iPad to print to a wireless printer (HP D110a). I can print and scan from several wireless PC's on the same network but cannot see the HP printer. I started with the WEP 128-bit and then switched to WPA for a while but no luck so I switched back to WEP. I've read that other's have had similar problems with this and other Linksys routers.
From the iPad point of view I have iOS version 4.3.3. When I try to Airprint, for example through the Safari web browser, I see no printers available. I've tried many apps all with the same problem.

I am trying to use the apple finder/application to view all my apple mac-mini computers. I do have two asdm-5505 connected via a vpn tunnel. At this point I can view only the computers on the local subnets. I called AppleCare and they gave some possible ports that can be opened in the firewall to allow the Bonjour protocol to pass through the ASDM:ports 5297/tcp, 5298/tcp-udp, 5353/udp, and 5354/tcp.Bonjour is the equivalent of Microsoft Netbeui used in Windows to browse the local subnet computers using Network Place desktop icon.

how to setup the wireless interface to forward multicast packets? Basically I cant get the ipads etc.. to see the AppleTV to control it. I connected an AP and it works fine so its got to be something with the way the router handles the packets from teh integrated wireless interface. I've been searching the forum for about 1hr and haven't founf anything other than a breif mention of broadcast forwarding and multicast setup.

I'm seeing a problem with Apple IOS devices connecting from one SSID and then connecting immediately to another. I've tried to replicate this fault with non Apple IOS devices, but I'm unable.
Environment:
Single 5508 WLC running 7.2.110.0 AIR-LAP1142N-A-K9 AP's
WLC is in clients head office, MPLS to their branch sites. AP's are in Flex Connect mode, with AP and Flex Connect groups for the AP's at the branch. 3 x SSIDs; Corporate (802.1X), Guest (Web-Auth) & Non-Corp (PSK).
Scenario:
Client is connected to the Corporate SSID with his iPad (new model, running iOS 5.1.1). No problem with access, he is able to roam throughout the building with good SNR/RSSI. He wants to test the other SSID's, he attempts to connect directly to the Guest or Non-Corp and gets an error message on the client saying 'Unable to Connect' or 'Unable to Join'. Debugs on the WLC for the client shows no connection attempt, no errors. I can see the client disconnect from the Corporate SSID, but nothing for the Guest or Non-Corp SSID.
If the client then disconnects and forgets the Corporate SSID from the wireless profiles on their i Pad, waits 20-30 seconds (I can see the client disconnect cleanly from the WLC) and then attempts to connect to the Guest or Non-Corp SSID's - he doesn't have a problem. He immediately associates, and is able to connect. If he then tries to connect directly to another SSID, while still associated to another from the same WLC/AP – he gets the error again. Forget/wait 20-30 seconds, attempt to connect – no problem. We've tested with several i Phones (4 & 4S), i Pads (2 & new model) - all running the same Apple IOS (5.1.1).
I unfortunately can't do much troubleshooting with TAC on this as the client is no longer onsite, and I don't have a 5508 in our lab that I can currently test with. I've tried playing with beacon intervals, etc to no avail.

I am beginning to get many emails from users who have recently upgraded to OS6 and saying now they cannot connect to our open access wireless network. We use a separate server that users must agree to a user agreement page and they say they get it, but after agreeing, it goes blank and they cannot connect. I am using mostly Cisco 3502's with the 5508 controller using 7.0.112.0 IOS version. Nobody in our IT department has yet to test OS6 yet.

I am setting up a new Guest network with a captive portal and it seems to all work fine except when Apple devices go to sleep. When they come back on it isn't just a case of logging in again as it just indicates to the client that it is still connected and won't present the login page again. The Controller will show the client as auth required. So far the quickest way has been for me to delete the network on iPads and re-enter my settings or create a new profile on a Macbook and join again. I have also had some success when doing a manual DHCP refresh on my Macbook which sometimes seems to kick the Controller into action so it presents the login page to the client again. Whether it is related to the timers on the Controller (5508 running code 7.0.235.3) or - as I just read in another post by Leo - the 20 minute timeout that all Apple devices have built in to conserve battery life

recently purchased the Wireless N D-Link Router DIR-615. After a few hiccups the router works with all of our computers, blackberry's, wireless printer and Ipod touch's however my Apple TV 1G will not connect to the network. The Apple TV will just give the error code -6 after the password for the network has been entered. I double checked that the password for the router is only WEP 10 hex digits and that it is correct have tried reseting the Apple TV to the factory settings and using the DHCP Reservation in the network settings of the router and manually configuring the TC/IP settings on the Apple TV (Not quite sure what I am doing with this though so put everything back). I have also tried switching the 802.11

I am having a trouble with using iTunes, iPhones and iPads on our Wireless LAN. We have the 2112 WLC and 10 1142N WAPs. If I do a network scan, I can see the Apple TV and see that port 5353 is open, which is Apple's Bonjour service. However, if I try to play music/video in iTunes, or on an iPhone/iPad, I do not see the Airplay icon. If I plug into the LAN, the Airplay icon appears immediately. I have created an allow all rule in the ACL but still no dice.

I recently installed a WAP4410N for a customer without any problem, but a few days later I received a call requesting assistance as the customer could not login to the web admin page.
The login screen was showing, but it wasn't acceptingthe username and password that I had set. Today I visited customer to investigate.
I discovered that I could login without any problem using my Windows laptop, but that customer could not use any of their Apple MACs to login.
Apart from one Windows PC, all customer computers were Apple OS. Customer could login using their Windows PC without any problem.

Running 7.0.220. There are several 'unknown' users every day reported in WCS. Investigating the connections on the WLC I find the clients are in a run state and passing traffic but there is no username listed on the client detail. (hence the unknown on WCS)
(mcm-189jsoc-wlc1) >show client detail 60:c5:47:07:b6:5a
Client MAC Address............................... 60:c5:47:07:b6:5a
Client Username ................................. N/A
AP MAC Address................................... 00:1e:13:42:16:a0
AP Name.......................................... mcm-208dorm-wap1

Clients in this state are usually Apple products. From initial investigation it looks like the do authenticate with the ACS. r debugs to run, or fixes on the WLC? Perhaps there's a bug on this behavior?

I've got 3 WLC 4402 controllers and the wireless is working perfectly except for 1 issue. We are trying to connect an apple tv, so we can stream picture, videos etc from ipads and Macbooks to a large display for media teaching. The setup works at home, but not at work. The apple TV is on the same network as the wireless apple devices, (we use a 10.6.4.x-10.6.5.254 range), both are dhcping the addresses (have tried fixing but that made no difference). I've enabled multicasting and igmp snooping and set the multicast address as 239.0.0.0 and it still doesn't work.

I am having issues figuring out how i can make AppleTV,Airprint, Airplay, etc show up on Ipads that are connected to the wireless network. The controller is at a main site which is seperated by 2800 series routers at the remote sites over 100Mbs links. Ipads connect and tunnell back to the main site. I've tried enabling FlexConnect but the devices still get the main site's addressing so i'm guessing they are still tunneling unless the AP loses connectivity to the controller. I have two SSIDs (staff and students). I have tested with just setting the staff to FlexConnect. Do I need to set both SSIDs to FlexConnect to make them dump data locally? AppleTVs are connected wired to the local networks and get addressing associated with that building.

We are experiencing some issues with the Apple TV and WLC. We currently have a Apple TV and iPhone same sub net connecting via Lightweight AP (different sub net) which connects to a Cisco3750 running IP Base. This connects to WAN routers managed by third party over a WAN and connects to far end Managed routers, these connect to other Cisco3750 IP Base and onto a 2504 Wireless LAN controller. We have used the the following document for WLC configuration; [URL]
We turn on Multicast globally, with IGMP snooping enabled also enable Multicast Multicast under controller (only option available on 2504) and give the device M Cast address 239.21.1.150 . The P2P blocking action is disabled. Going to Monitor Multicast we can see the Report for 224.0.0.251 and MGID. However the issue is at the Sender Receiver side the iPhone cannot see the Airplay on the iPhone that should be seen if the end to end stream is working. My focus is now on the Cisco3750's, although I do not totally understand why the device needs Multicast enabled as the Multicast Join and Group Traffic is encapsulated in the CAP WAP Tunnel is it not? Anyway I have enabled the only option "ip multicast routing distributed" and under the V LANs that connect to WLC and AP the only option available is the "ip pim passive" there is no "ip pim sparese-dense mode"
I am sure the WLC is configured correctly, but I suspect that this will not work due to the IP Base image on the 3750's not being able to run full multicast or we need to use uni cast for this solution that the 2504 does not support.

I got an Apple TV a few weeks back and we've been using it a lot, especially to stream Netflix. However, another application that I got it for was for streaming iPhoto slideshows and iMovie stuff to the Apple TV with Airplay's screen sharing. This event scenario has played out several times..... Screen sharing is up and going and it'll be working great. All of a sudden the TV will go back to the main Apple TV menu on its own. Upon further review at this point, NONE of my WiFi (iPhone, iPad, etc.) devices will connect to the network and I have to power cycle the router. Router lights are on, but no one's home. At this point, it'll boot back up and then everything will be fine, at least for a while.Tonight, I was showing vacation pictures to some family and this same process happened twice. Since I can't seem to figure out how to stop playing a slideshow in iPhoto and then start it again in the middle, it's very annoying. Here are some relevant troubleshooting points to consider:
1. This network problem (or something similar to it) has happened in the past, but whatever it is, streaming a slideshow really seems to aggravate it. This seems to be the only scenario that I can do to actually INDUCE the issue. Periods of long uploads or downloads are fine. Streaming audio from one device and similar usage seems to be fine, but this scenario fails pretty much every time, and not necessarily right away.
2. After having this issue tonight multiple times, I stopped trying to stream an actual iPhoto slideshow and just went into the album and scrolled through the pics one by one. I did this for at least an hour with no issue. But with an actual slideshow, it failed twice in 30 minutes or less. And it's happened before tonight as well.
3. It doesn't appear to make a difference what application I'm streaming from on the Mac. Whether it's iPhoto, iMovie, or even Facetime.
-MacBook Pro Specs - OS X 10.8.2 - Late 2011 Model
-Apple TV - MD199LL/A, v5.0.2
-Router - Linksys/Cisci E1000 - Firmware v2.1.02
I've got a fair amount of devices in my home that use WiFi, but there was nothing irregular going on in the house to generate an excessive amount of internal network traffic or anything like that. My gut says the problem is with the router, but it's only a few months old, and I've updated the firmware to no avail.

In the company we have two SSIDs for corporate and guest networks respectively when I try to connect to any of the SSIDs it doesn't happen until 5 retries. The only log I get that seems to be related to it is the following:
*Jun 11 11:48:09.062: %APF-1-DISCONECT_MOBILE_DUE_TO_WLAN_SW: apf_policy.c:541 Disconnecting mobile 00:23:32:73:d7:15 due to switch of WLANs from 1(femsawl) to 2(visitas)
Here it shows a switch between SSIDs but if you just turned on an apple device and try to associate for the first time to any of the SSIDs the scenario is the same, several tries to connect.I am running a 4402 wlc with 6.0.202.0 software version.

We are experiencing problems with Apple Ipads on a large scale network that we install and maintain, the Ipads seem to join the network with no problems (bit slower than laptops etc) but will then disconnect for no apparent reason at random intervals. We have ran laptops on the same AP's and in the same area and no similar probems occurred, we are using IOS Cisco 1041's and 1042's, we have seen one of the Ipads's sitting quite happily on a 1042 2,4ghz radio and then it disconnected and went to the 5ghz radio. We are getting similar disconnects on the single radio 1041.

I have two Cisco 1200AP.
I have it configured with two SSIDs, one corporate (802.1x) one using WPA2 Personal.
I have no issues on the corporate, but I have found that Apple devices appear to detect it as a WPA2 Enterprise, and request a username and password.
If I enter the network manualy as WPA2Personal the devices joins the network ok. Then ocasionaly the device looses its link to the network and fails to pass traffic.

Do I have to enable some setting for this to work. It used to work in my very old Buffalo router with tomato firmware.
If I connect the Apple TV to wired network it works fine. Instantly it shows up in i Phone Remote app, but not if its on wireless network.

I'm about to return my E3000 because I can't figure this problem out. As you know a new Apple TV was released and along with it you now have the capability to send music and photos from iTunes on your laptop to your Apple TV which you can then play on your TV. These two components communicate through your wireless router. However this is not happening because (I believe) that the E3000 is blocking something (a port, some rouge firewall setting, etc.). I would be happy opening every frigging port this thing has and blocking all it's internal firewalls just to see if I can get these two devices working correctly. The software that allows this to all occur is called Airplay via your homeshare g network. Any success in getting your Apple TV and your iTunes and perhaps your iPhone to call communicate together or how the E3000 works.

I recently upgraded my Linksys wrt120n router firmware & had to reconfigure settings. Subsequently, some (but not all) of my apple devices are having intermittent wireless connection problems. Specifically, my ipad1 & ipad2 never lose their connection but a mac book pro (~ 2 years old), iPhone 3g, iPhone 4, older iPod touch & very old i book g4 all work for a period of time (usually 1/2 day) & then lose their connection. When I attempt to reconnect these devices I receive the following error..."unable to join the network xxxxxx....". I also have a Dell laptop (1 1/2 yrs old) that generally does not have the connection problem. Finally, when the devices do lose their network connection all I have to do to reconnect is go to the Linkys router setup webpage & click on save & the wireless connection works again (almost like this is just refreshing the connection for these specific apple devices). I was not having any problem prior to the firmware upgrade & from what I have read the older firmware version is no longer available so going back to the old firmware does not appear to be an option.

I’m having issues with enabling Apple’s AirPlay services on a relatively simple network consisting of a Cisco 881 (Advanced IP Services) and an autonomous Cisco 1142 AP. I’ve attached a diagram explaining the connectivity. I believe I have to enable IP Multicast at the router, but I’m not really sure the best/right way to do it. Also I’m not sure what/if any commands would be needed at the AP.All of the wireless clients are confirmed to be in the same subnet, so no real routing is happening etc. Also regular Internet connectivity/routing from the wireless clients is fine.

For the past year my wireless has been working great and I have being playing games/doing homework with no hassle. Yestetday my internet connection became very slow. After countless restarts, router/modem resets nothing has changed and I only get like 5kb of download speed. Since my internet connection was lost naturally I unplugged the wireless card and re-plugged it, didn't change anything. After that I restarted my computer, but nothing changed. AFTER THAT I unplugged my router, then reset my router to factory settings, which did not change anything. Since everything was backed up I thought I would reinstall Windows 7 to nuke any hidden problems. After 2 reinstalls of Windows 7, nothing has changed. Next I had Comcast reset my connection with them which did not work. Though it did work with my brothers desktop. After some more time just fiddling around my connection went back to lightning speeds. no.....4 hours later my connection went dead.At all times my computer will see my network but it either will not connect to it or it is really really slow now.
