Linksys Wireless Router :: E1000 Dies After Streaming From Mac To Apple TV
Dec 5, 2012
I got an Apple TV a few weeks back and we've been using it a lot, especially to stream Netflix. However, another application that I got it for was for streaming iPhoto slideshows and iMovie stuff to the Apple TV with Airplay's screen sharing. This event scenario has played out several times..... Screen sharing is up and going and it'll be working great. All of a sudden the TV will go back to the main Apple TV menu on its own. Upon further review at this point, NONE of my WiFi (iPhone, iPad, etc.) devices will connect to the network and I have to power cycle the router. Router lights are on, but no one's home. At this point, it'll boot back up and then everything will be fine, at least for a while.Tonight, I was showing vacation pictures to some family and this same process happened twice. Since I can't seem to figure out how to stop playing a slideshow in iPhoto and then start it again in the middle, it's very annoying. Here are some relevant troubleshooting points to consider:
1. This network problem (or something similar to it) has happened in the past, but whatever it is, streaming a slideshow really seems to aggravate it. This seems to be the only scenario that I can do to actually INDUCE the issue. Periods of long uploads or downloads are fine. Streaming audio from one device and similar usage seems to be fine, but this scenario fails pretty much every time, and not necessarily right away.
2. After having this issue tonight multiple times, I stopped trying to stream an actual iPhoto slideshow and just went into the album and scrolled through the pics one by one. I did this for at least an hour with no issue. But with an actual slideshow, it failed twice in 30 minutes or less. And it's happened before tonight as well.
3. It doesn't appear to make a difference what application I'm streaming from on the Mac. Whether it's iPhoto, iMovie, or even Facetime.
-MacBook Pro Specs - OS X 10.8.2 - Late 2011 Model
-Apple TV - MD199LL/A, v5.0.2
-Router - Linksys/Cisci E1000 - Firmware v2.1.02
I've got a fair amount of devices in my home that use WiFi, but there was nothing irregular going on in the house to generate an excessive amount of internal network traffic or anything like that. My gut says the problem is with the router, but it's only a few months old, and I've updated the firmware to no avail.

I am facing issues with my router EA4500 and my apple TV. When I am watching a video from my itunes library at my PC, sometimes stop playing waiting to receive data. Is that a way to conect my apple tv to my router to prioritize this video streaming from my PC to apple TV?

New Router - Setup went easy. Create a folder named Media - copy a few formats in only 6 files all less than 2gb in size, 2 x avi (divx/xvid), mp3, mkv, mp4 and flv. All excited I scoot over to the PS 3 - righto we can do this!! Only to see no titles found. Great stuff Go to router - media server - scan - database updated - awesome let's try again! No titles found. Ok?!? Reboot router - reboot ps3. Still frowning - no titles found?

I have just upgraded from an E1000 to the E3000 and have run into a couple of problems with my iphone 4s.There are a few applications, BBC iplayer, Sky Go, BBC News and ITV player that wont allow me to watch any of the online video through the iphone. I have iplayer on two other computers running through the same router and they work fine.Every thing worked fine with my old E1000 so I'm taking it that it must be a setting in the router itself somewhere that needs to be altered to allow it to work.

Been noticing this lately, thought a few times it was just random internet drops outs, but completely crushing bandwidth when streaming is normal for this router.
Its completely obvious when playing a game on xbox live or playing wow or diablo 3 on the pc, when streaming from youtube in 720p or higher the bandwidth is completely crushed. I downloaded a game yesterday also through games for windows marketplace on the pc yesterday and my brother couldn't play diablo 3 while I was downloading. I tried media prioritization and that doesn't fix the problem.
Interestingly enough I still own an E4200 so I hooked that router back up just to see how that handled things. I set my extension on chrome to always play youtube videos at 1080p if availible, and there was no lag or bandwidth crush. I logged onto xbox live while my brother was playing diablo 3 and downloaded a video trailer of a game and no bandwidth crush. Hmm I thought.... So I tried the EA6500 again and the bandwidth crush comes back and my brother can no longer play online games while Im streaming.
At this point Im just gonna suck it up and start using the E4200 again until EA6500 gets a good software update and can perform standard tasks. I have a 20mb download and a 2mb upload should this be happening with a router this expensive?

Basically the problem is that the HD media steamed through the E4200 router has a significant lag on the TV. So details..I have the Linksys E4200 wifi router and want to stream the HD video from my computer to TV.The connection schema is pretty straightforward:Computer with 10/100 mbit network adapter-----(network cable)-->E4200----(WIFI)----->TV with 802.11n WIFI adapter. Also 10(ten) mbit Internet connection cable is plugged into WIFI router. The questions are:
1) Can the 10 mbit internet connection affect the speed of the media content being streamed through the E4200 router?
2) Does it make sense to buy the WIFI 802.11 n adapter and use it instead of the network adapter / cable in the connection schema mentioned above?
3) What can be other possible reasons of the lag?

A customer of ours has the following access points and wireless lan controllers on site. They want to use the Apple Bonjour service with Apple TV's and iPads. I have enabled multicast feature of the 5508 globally and one the SSID.The Apple TV has an ethernet connection and the iPads connect over the wifi. The Apple tv is on the same subnet as the iPad's - the Bonjour features do work for approx 5/10 minutes then it stops working for some reason. The Access Points plug into a Cisco 2960 Layer 2 switch, the 5508 controllers plug are in LAG mode and plug into a Nortel Layer 3 stack which I have enabled IGMP snooping.I've read that the Apple Bonjour service isnt designed to work on a multi subnet network - but both the Apple TV and iPad are connected on the same subnet. Sounds like some kind of timeout but not too sure.

how to setup the wireless interface to forward multicast packets? Basically I cant get the ipads etc.. to see the AppleTV to control it. I connected an AP and it works fine so its got to be something with the way the router handles the packets from teh integrated wireless interface. I've been searching the forum for about 1hr and haven't founf anything other than a breif mention of broadcast forwarding and multicast setup.

I am very pleased with my purchase of the E3000 so far. However, one function seems to allude me. One of the main reasons for purchasing this router was because of its Media Server functionality. I wanted to be able to stream to my UPnP devices (ps3, xbox360, etc) without having to keep my power hog of a PC running. I have set up the HD using the Storage tab of the Advanced Router Settings, and created several Shares on the Media Server tab. The good news is that I am able to access the share on my PS3. The bad news is that I can't on my Xbox360s. As the Xbox360s has built in wireless N, I would really like to be able to stream to that system.

I purchases a Hauppage USB TV tuner and bought the software that allows live TV signals to be streamed to my home PC or android phone. Once I installed the software and ran a test, the remote access failed. The error message said I need to check the router's configuration. I know very little about configuring routers, but the model is WRT54Gv3.

When we stream movies in two different rooms at the same time we drop our netflix or vudu connections. Can I enable or disable any settings on my router that would work. I love this router have 35 Mbps on internet speed so I don't think that is the problem. Range runs from 35 up to 45 Mbps all the time. I know how to access my router settings and navigate where to go and what to change if I can. I have 3 laptops, 1 wireless printer, two blue-ray devices attached.

I upgraded my E3000 to a new E4200 several months ago. I use an SSL VPN to connect to work which worked fine on 1.0.01 and 1.0.02 but I upgraded to 1.0.03 to fix an issue where the router constantly reboots when I stream Netflix or Hulu and now the router reboots with Netflix, Hulu AND the SSL VPN tunnel initiation.

The new firmware is killing the video streaming performance I have to revert to the old firmware Ver.1.1.28.146072 to be able to stream videos from the media server. I have been waiting a long time for a decent Firmware that will fix the multiple issues with this router but this is ridiculous every new firmware update brings more issues to the table I am feed up with the Cisco developers I have a WRT610N router that is performing better than this lemon router that Cisco just introduced in 2012.

I just got a linksys after years of using a single netgear, this is the second we've gotten in the last month... But each time we have the same problem, the thing resets constantly while doing streaming from netflix, over wifi, and resets the entire router. I've updated to the latest firmware but i'm ready to just throw this out and put our old netgear back up.

Before upgrading I was able to do this without a problem. Any suggestions for improving performance with streaming music at home? Internet/access to files on Buffalo NAS wirelessly works fine.

I've just signed up to a local Irish Internet provider and was supplied with a Cisco router EPC3925. Wireless is working fine for laptop and iPad. However I cannot share my iTunes library with Apple TV. I connected the Ethernet cable and it worked perfectly. However as soon as I disconnect, so too does the home sharing. I've disabled windows firewall and completely uninstalled macafee firewall. Im using windows vista and have the latest version of iTunes installed.

I'm about to return my E3000 because I can't figure this problem out. As you know a new Apple TV was released and along with it you now have the capability to send music and photos from iTunes on your laptop to your Apple TV which you can then play on your TV. These two components communicate through your wireless router. However this is not happening because (I believe) that the E3000 is blocking something (a port, some rouge firewall setting, etc.). I would be happy opening every frigging port this thing has and blocking all it's internal firewalls just to see if I can get these two devices working correctly. The software that allows this to all occur is called Airplay via your homeshare g network. Any success in getting your Apple TV and your iTunes and perhaps your iPhone to call communicate together or how the E3000 works.

Can the WRT110 forward Bonjour packets? I have one WRT110 running my home wifi network with firmware version 1.0.07. I've spent hours trying to get my iPad to print to a wireless printer (HP D110a). I can print and scan from several wireless PC's on the same network but cannot see the HP printer. I started with the WEP 128-bit and then switched to WPA for a while but no luck so I switched back to WEP. I've read that other's have had similar problems with this and other Linksys routers.
From the iPad point of view I have iOS version 4.3.3. When I try to Airprint, for example through the Safari web browser, I see no printers available. I've tried many apps all with the same problem.

I recently upgraded my Linksys wrt120n router firmware & had to reconfigure settings. Subsequently, some (but not all) of my apple devices are having intermittent wireless connection problems. Specifically, my ipad1 & ipad2 never lose their connection but a mac book pro (~ 2 years old), iPhone 3g, iPhone 4, older iPod touch & very old i book g4 all work for a period of time (usually 1/2 day) & then lose their connection. When I attempt to reconnect these devices I receive the following error..."unable to join the network xxxxxx....". I also have a Dell laptop (1 1/2 yrs old) that generally does not have the connection problem. Finally, when the devices do lose their network connection all I have to do to reconnect is go to the Linkys router setup webpage & click on save & the wireless connection works again (almost like this is just refreshing the connection for these specific apple devices). I was not having any problem prior to the firmware upgrade & from what I have read the older firmware version is no longer available so going back to the old firmware does not appear to be an option.

Basically I use the WDTV to stream movies from my PC and external harddrive (which is plugged straight into the router) to my TV. The WDTV has a "Network Shares" section and my PC and harddrive usually appear here.
The only way I can get them to show is to reboot the router each time I want to use the WDTV player.
Is there a setting on the router which I need to enable/disable which will prevent the network shares drop?

Had an E4200 for a couple of months now and have not been able to resolve an issue with the router dropping an Apple iPad 2 at random times. The E4200 is replacing a Cisco Aironet 1200, which never dropped any clients, iPad 2 or others, and never displayed any of the issues below.
TECH DETAILS:The E4200 is being used purely as an access point. All extras are not in use and are disabled.
Firmware 1.0.03
Hardware version 1.
BASIC ISSUE:The E4200 drops an Apple iPad 2 off the 2.4 Ghz Mixed (B, G, N) network. The user must then select the network to rejoin. Rejoining occurs without incident. The same issue occurs when the network is restricted to B, G. The drops occur at what appears to be random intervals - sometimes 10 minutes apart, sometimes hours apart. We can have as many as 6 drops in an hour. A ping to the apple ipad shows the device stops responding to pings about 10 seconds before the user is prompted to rejoin a network. Meanwhile, a ping to the E4200 itself from a laptop connected via the E4200 on the same radio as the ipad continues to work without fail during this incident.
1. The iPad 2's cannot connect to the 5Ghz radio. I believe iPad 2's are supposed to support 5Ghz.
2. Both our Apple TVs do not connect to the 5Ghz radio: they fail with a "There was an error connecting to the network. Check your settings and try again. (-3914)" error. Apple TV supports 5Ghz.
3. The admin interface for the E4200 is very slow sometimes. Probably over 20 seconds to render some pages when it gets really bad. As a comparison, Internet-based pages on fast sites that delivered via the E4200 itself load in less than 2 seconds.
4. The HTTPS version of the admin interface can only be connected to via Safari browers. Both Internet Explorer 9 and Chrome 16 fail to connect with a "Connection reset" error. In Chome, it says "Error 101 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_RESET): The connection was reset." This is across multiple devices. There is no issue with straight HTTP.
All other devices - including Macs and PCs - connect fine with the E4200 on both 5Ghz and 2.4 Ghz radios, even if they cannot access its admin interface via HTTPS.I've presented quite a few issues above, but the main one is the drop outs for the iPad 2 devices. I'd present logs on drops, but the thing doesn't record any useful logs.
Basic wireless config:
5Ghz:
Network Mode: Wireless-N Only
Channel width: Auto (20 or 40 Mhz)
Channel: Auto (DFS)
SSID Broadcast: Enabled

I've recently purchased an E4200, and while it works great, I'd like to use my Apple Airport Extreme (2nd generation) to extend my network to another part of the house that doesn't get as great of a signal. I've become very frustrated trying to accomplish it, and I'm not sure if the problem is more from the Linksys end, the Airport end, or if it's just me.

I am using a EA4500 and use Linksys Smart Wi-Fi to manage the device. In the household we have multiple Apple i devices. Somehow the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi combined two separte i devices (iPhone 5 and a 4th generation iTouch) to one user. The devices actually have different names, but the Smart Wi-Fi is combining them into one device. Got my E4200 a month ago, and have since been experiencing problems with movie streaming between my server and my Popcorn Hour A110. All kinds of movies stutters randomly and becomes unwatchable. Streaming of the same movie from my server to my laptop (connected wirelessly) causes no stuttering.
I have been doing some troubleshooting and determined that it is not the server's fault (it achieves transfer speeds of 60+ MB/s through Samba). I have also ruled out the possibility that the Popcorn Hour is the faulty component.
Lastly, I just tried switching from the E4200 to my old D-Link DIR-655. This has effectively removed the stuttering, leading me to conclude that it is the E4200's fault.
