I just got my laptop (Inspiron 5100) I would like to set it up so it is wireless. But the trouble is that I have NO idea how to even start to achieve this. I am clueless about wireless. I don't even know if my notebook has the hardware it needs to start this goal of mine.
View 29 RepliesI have a wireless card that causes my Inspiron 5100 to lock up about once a day. I have tried 3 different types of cards (Netgear, Microsoft, Dell) all with the same result. I have a laptop cooler because I thought that the heat might be causing the problem - not the case. If I leave the wireless card out the lockup does not happen.
On a side note...I have tried to update the BIOS on my computer. When I download what seems to be the appropriate file, it tells me that I don't have the appropriate file.
I have an Inspiron 5100 with a Conexant D480 internal modem. When I'm on-line on dialup to a V90 telephone line, if a telephone call comes in, the caller hears rings but the on-line session is not interrupted. On my desktop system, the on-line session IS interrupted by incoming calls, and that is what I want my notebook system to do. I have re-installed the driver from the system CD, which addressed this issue when the desktop had this problem, but this has not worked for the Inspiron.

The Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller driver (I've tried both the download and CD) works fine for the Card itself, but it doesn't work for the Network Controller. When I first restart after running the installation program included with the driver, XP tells me that a new Network Controller device has been found. As I go through the driver installation for that device it fails, and I receive a message telling me that the Hardware Update Wizard "Cannot Install this Hardware...The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software." The device then appears in the Device Manager under the Other Devices section with a yellow question mark and exclamation point indicating trouble.

This started happening gradually, then became more and more frequent. I tried reformatting my computer, and this still is happening. When I use a wireless USB adapter, the computer has no problems using the wifi.

I have tried everything I know of. Uninstalled/Reinstalled the driver - I have an Intel 5100 AGN wireless driver installed. I disabled and enabled it. Didn't work. Running command prompt and typing in ipconfig /all doesn't detect my adapter device.
I also did these by running command prompt as an administrator: [code] and restarted my computer. I have a Dell Studio 1555 with Win 7 (32-bit) Professional. I know this is a problem with my Windows as the wireless works seamlessly in my Ubuntu.
My Intel(R) Wifi Link 5100 AGN wireless adapter does not recognize network connections. I corresponded with Intel, after updating drivers etc., the tech concluded that I probably need a new adapter. I have a Studio 1555(1550?). I would like to purchase a USB adapter.

I have been experiencing quite a bit of wireless problems with my Inspiron 17R SE. Only about half the time can I connect to my router and even then it only stays connected for a couple hours. It seems intermittent and the problem will go away for a week or so, but right now it is back in full force. Typically it will either connect and say that there is limited connectivity or it won't connect at all. Resetting the adapter via the Windows 7 troubleshooter only fixes it about half the time.
The thing is that the wireless and everything else works just fine on my Ubuntu partition, which makes me think that my driver is a bit wonky. I have tried downloading the one directly from Dell, and that has come to no avail. I have even tried using the Dell software support suite, and that hasn't found anything wrong either.

It takes long times to load and routinely drops or stutters in its connection, which makes online gameplay very inefficient if not impossible. Prior to this, it was running fine.My wife's netbook and my work laptop both run normally and fine off the connection. The ping rates for those computer, tested at the exact same time as my desktop, are both good while my desktop's ping and jitter are horrible. So I have the feeling it is not really a networking issue, but more something with the wireless card or another issue with my desktop itself. My computer is a Dell Inspiron 531, probably about 3 years old, which as I mentioned ran fine with the wireless before. I am running Vista. In the past several months, the computer fan would kick in really hard and often at graphically intense moments though it doesn't do it any more (yes, it is still running at normal speed), so I'm not sure if the card itself was overheated and damaged? Every time I try I get an error the the network adapter isn't found. The trouble shooter can't even fix it.
