I have Linksys WRT54GL wireless router on the top floor so the devices in one part of the bottom floor (most away from the source) are having trouble staying connected let alone getting good connection. What would be good solution in my case? I'd like something wireless, don't want to drag cables downstairs.

I have a Linksys WRT54GL router handling my home wireless network located in the living room (let's call it 'Zone A').I have an ethernet cable running from that router to the other end of the house (let's call this one 'Zone B'), where the wi-fi signal is very weak. a. What is the technically correct way to have a strong wi-fi signal at Zone B (with the same SSID, key-phrase, etc.)? b. If I take another WRT54GL router, set the same SSID and key-phrase, disable its DHCP and plug it to the ethernet cable in Zone B - will that do the trick? I've tried the Linksys range extender at a friend's house and it turned out to be a big flop.

It is not clear if my best option is to get an antenna to boost the range (such as an Alfa 500mW AWUS036H USB Wireless Adapter 802.11 b/g Network Radio Card. Includes 2dBi Omni Antenna ), or to get a repeater to repeat the signal, such as a Hawking HWREN1 Hi-Gain Wireless-300N Range Extender. I also don't know if Linksys has a product for either application that works with 802.11n standard.Finally, since the Linksys E2500 has no antenna or antenna port visible, I am nod sure if an antenna such as the Alfa listed above or a Hawking HSB2 HiGain Signal Booster would even work with the E2500.

One desktop computer will stay wired to the 2Wire and laptop or 2 will connect to the WRT54GL since the 2Wire cannot reach into the yard (metal buiding). I've seen several examples of connecting two WRT54G together. I Can I do that well with std Linksys software or would I be better off downloading Tomato or DD-WRT third party?

Recently we bought HP laserjet network printer which is connected to the domain network with the ip range of 10.1.1.1 which is the same network linksys router is connected to. Since router always lease different range of ip (192.168.1.1) then all computers connected through router cannot print because they are in different network/ip range.is there a way allow wireless user to print to the same printer regardless of the ip difference?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've got a WPA wireless network set up that utilizes a total of 4 WRT54GL routers as access points (on channels 1, 6, and 11 [the two APs furthest from each other both utilize 11). Each AP generally supports about 5 clients at a time (though sometimes as high as 10).Generally, everything is working, but the clients furthest from the access points occasionally lose their connections, and some users have reported periods when they are completely unable to obtain an IP. I am virtually certain that this is based on poor signal strength resulting from distance from the APs and/or RF interference from other APs in the building. I have done everything possible to improve signal strength by router placement, optimizing channel usage based upon RF surveys, and upgrading to high-gain omnis.
This leaves nothing to do apart from tweaking the advanced wireless settings to marginally improve problems related to weak signal and/or RF interference, so I've been reading everything I can find on these boards and elsewhere about changing Fragmentation Threshold, RTS threshold, and beacon interval. However, I'm left with the following questions.
1) There seems to be disagreement about Fragmentation threshold and RTS threshold settings. Some (including the Linksys Technical Troubleshooting Wizard) recommend that both be set to 2304. I have also seen people insist that Fragmentation be set to 2306 and RTS to 2304. A few recommend 2306 for both thresholds, and some advise 2306 for Fragmentation and 2307 for RTS (though by my limited understanding, it simply disables RTS when the value is higher than the fragmentation threshold value). Which of these settings is best? And more importantly, WHY is it the best? Generally, I understand what the settings do, but I am reluctant to change them when there doesn't seem to be a consensus about exactly what they should be.
2) With respect to beacon interval, I've seen both 75ms and 50ms recommmended to replace the default of 100ms. For a network of my size (4 APs, averaging 5 users each), will increasing the number of beacons (and hence the RF traffic even when the network is idle) pose a problem? Also, I'm a little less clear as to how this would improve connectivity.
Since these settings will affect all users, I want to make sure that I'm using settings that will be beneficial on the whole. The last thing I want to do is inadvertantly make things worse, and since I can't test things directly from the standpoint of each user.

I want to share my pc's wifi connection with a neighbor across the street. But i have been un-able to confirm that it can reach the net. With the configs i have tried.I have cloned the mac addy for the wifiAP i have shared. This should be enough. And i should be able to walk it across the street and have it act as the same wifiAP. And he should have the net, via my pc. I tried to use another wifi device to connect to the shared IP...And the router itself...But there was no internet. have tried to configure this router to work as a repeater as well using it's setup. This resulted in no internet connectivity over lan, and no wifi service listing. These is no way for me to tell it which router or device it should be repeating from...
I have tried manually configureing the mn-700 To use the same ip the other router does for it's services. The mn-700 doesn't keep the settings. When it does there is no internet or wifi services.When i have it setup on it's own, no config changes...It'll connect over wifi to the router but there is no net. I can connect a lan wire going to the other router and renew it's lease. This will give the mn-700 an ip addy as if it were another pc. It uses this as it's WAN config
I'm an electrical engineer by trade, and fairly inept at networking. That being said, I am looking to extend the maximum range of my networking equipment. I have a job which requires around 500' between switches, and am trying to find a clever way to bridge the gap. The span is direct-burial cat5e, and has very low bandwidth requirements. I know you can buy off-the-shelf range extenders, but they are expensive, so I thought maybe I could avoid it.
1. It my understanding that the lower speed protocols (10 Mbps rather that 100, 1000) have a longer maximum operating length, because they utilize a lower frequency and consequently see a lower impedance. If so, are there network switches that I can force to use the lower baseband frequencies?
2. Should I bother trying to find a cable with the lowest characteristic impedance (or will they all be similar)? Cat 5e is pretty good, yes?
3. Should I do half or full-duplex; is this something I can control as well?
4. What network switches are cheap and allow this type of configurability?
5. If I attach other switches to the ends of this 500' ethernet bridge with auto-negotiating feature, will there be any conflicts or they will all get along?
In a bit of a predicament. We're from Ireland and we've two houses on the farm that are exactly 108m as the crow flies. The main house is where we live and the other is more of an office type small house. We've no phone line or internet connection in it and the location is in a dip where we've bad mobile/cell connection. We're don't want to pay an extra55 a month for phone line and internet just to use the internet maybe twice a week. We have a wireless connection in the main home house and want to extend it to the other. I know there are ways but confuesed as to which to use.

View 7 Replies View RelatedSending WiFi signal about 1/4 mile from my home to where my daughter lives so she can use her Samsung Galaxy2 Tablet on WiFi.There are homes, condos and trees in between us, so it is not a clear path.So far this is what I have done.I am using a modem and a Netgear WNR834B Wireless N Router.I connected a Hawkins Laptop Extender (HWREN Wireless 150N Mini Extender * single antenna outlet) into the router and connected a WiFi cable from the Hawkins to my tower outside above my roof and have attached a 10 dbi gain Trendnet antenna (omnidirectional) to the cable.But still the WiFi signal doesn't seem to be very strong at all when I test with my phone.And obviously, my daughters tablet does not see my router when she has her tablet search for WiFi.I also tried a 14dbi WIfi ASUS directional antenna and basically came up with the same outcome... she could not see the WiFi signal..My daughter lives in a condo and is not capable or allowed to install any outside antenna system whatsoever.

I installed a DAP 1522 as a bridge to our entertainment PC. After a while of trying to sort out how to configure it everything is working there. The 1522 is connected to the PC via cable.
I still want to extend the overall wireless range to better cover the lower floors and back porch.
From reading the manual on the 1522 I am a bit confused. I understand how it works as a bridge, connecting devices via cable. Will it also extend the range is set as an Access Point without needing the devices to connect via cable?
how to properly configure 2 different hardware devices to extend the current wifi signal of my home network.I'm using a Motorola SBG6580 DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem as my primary access point (AP) and a Netgear N300 DGN2200v1 ADSL2+ modem router which will function "behind" the SBG6580 in repeater mode. I previously had DSL for my internet connectivity but recently switched to broadband cable for faster speeds.Due to the layout of my home, I cannot physically connect the Netgear router to the Motorola modem via ethernet cable and need both devices to communicate wirelessly. I have already done extensive reading on this subject and best practices suggest that, whenever possible, both units should be the same brand/manufacturer. The Netgear appliance does have the capability of being configured as a repeater so if I don't have to buy a "network extender" that would be my preference.I understand that both units must be configured to have the same SSID, subnet, wireless channel and security encryption. In repeater mode the Netgear router can't be configured to use WPA2-PSK so I need to use WEP instead.

I replaced my old separate modem and router yesterday for a Linksys WAG160N. Basically , my next door neighbor is paying their ISP a fortune and hardly uses their internet at all. Now the 2 houses are separated by an alley but distance from the router to their computer is about 6m. I have a Linksys WAG320N wireless N router which provides wireless coverage to only a part of my apartment. I'm trying to extend the wireless coverage by using an Apple Airport Express (1st Gen). The only way this would make sense would be to extend wirelessly.

WAP610N is on channel 6 and WRT320N is on channel 1. Both have WPA2-Personal encryption, the same key.The problem is that no matther what, my laptop connects only to the router (WRT320N):I tried to put the laptop near the WAP610N, disconnect / connect to the network, walk with the laptop between the router and ap... it only connects to the router.

There is a cable that goes from this routerto the living room across the house, it is just laying there. Since I cannot get a wireless signal into that room,I would like, using the cable that is hanging there to make use of the other linksys and provide a wireless signal to the living room, all under the same network. View 4 Replies View RelatedI bought a new cable and rewired the ISP connection because mice chewed on the cord in the attic. I have a belkin N150 as the main router with the connection comming in to it. I have the DD-WRT that we want to setup as a repeater. I followed instructions as too the wireless mode, security key, gateway, subnet and all that but I cannot see the DD-WRT router.
Okay I rebooted the repeater and entered the settings again from here and now it is working except I cant see my repeater now when i type 192.168.2.1.
In our house we use a Linksys WRT54GL router. When I am connected to the router via a cable I can play an online RPG without any problems.I recently connected an acecss point to the router ( a belkin N1 ). Even if I am connected with a cable to the accesspoint, which is connected to the router by cable as well, I get huge lag spikes about every 10 seconds while playing the game.
