May 1, 2012I first want to say I "think" I might be posting in the wrong forums for this question, but because I'm not really sure what the proper terminology for this is, I thought it best to ask here.
I have recently upgraded my router for my home network from an old Linksys WRT54GS G router, to a new E2500 N router. I have heard/read that it is possible to reconfiqure my old router to act as a range extender for my network but I am unclear how to do so. I think this may be the same thing as an access point, but all the FAQ's I've found seem to have this work as a solo device, not as a device on existing network. I have my e2500 setup with the modem in my study and broadcasting from there, and would like to use my old G router set up as a range extender to be located in the front living room area and picking up the network signal and rebroadcasting from there without a modem or computer attached.

Jul 26, 2011Just purchased WRT54GL for family friend to extend the wireless range of their DSL via 2Wire ATT modem Wireless router. One desktop computer will stay wired to the 2Wire and laptop or 2 will connect to the WRT54GL since the 2Wire cannot reach into the yard (metal buiding). I've seen several examples of connecting two WRT54G together. I Can I do that well with std Linksys software or would I be better off downloading Tomato or DD-WRT third party?

Recently we bought HP laserjet network printer which is connected to the domain network with the ip range of 10.1.1.1 which is the same network linksys router is connected to. Since router always lease different range of ip (192.168.1.1) then all computers connected through router cannot print because they are in different network/ip range.is there a way allow wireless user to print to the same printer regardless of the ip difference?

Oct 26, 2008I've got a WPA wireless network set up that utilizes a total of 4 WRT54GL routers as access points (on channels 1, 6, and 11 [the two APs furthest from each other both utilize 11). Each AP generally supports about 5 clients at a time (though sometimes as high as 10).Generally, everything is working, but the clients furthest from the access points occasionally lose their connections, and some users have reported periods when they are completely unable to obtain an IP. I am virtually certain that this is based on poor signal strength resulting from distance from the APs and/or RF interference from other APs in the building. I have done everything possible to improve signal strength by router placement, optimizing channel usage based upon RF surveys, and upgrading to high-gain omnis.
This leaves nothing to do apart from tweaking the advanced wireless settings to marginally improve problems related to weak signal and/or RF interference, so I've been reading everything I can find on these boards and elsewhere about changing Fragmentation Threshold, RTS threshold, and beacon interval. However, I'm left with the following questions.
1) There seems to be disagreement about Fragmentation threshold and RTS threshold settings. Some (including the Linksys Technical Troubleshooting Wizard) recommend that both be set to 2304. I have also seen people insist that Fragmentation be set to 2306 and RTS to 2304. A few recommend 2306 for both thresholds, and some advise 2306 for Fragmentation and 2307 for RTS (though by my limited understanding, it simply disables RTS when the value is higher than the fragmentation threshold value). Which of these settings is best? And more importantly, WHY is it the best? Generally, I understand what the settings do, but I am reluctant to change them when there doesn't seem to be a consensus about exactly what they should be.
2) With respect to beacon interval, I've seen both 75ms and 50ms recommmended to replace the default of 100ms. For a network of my size (4 APs, averaging 5 users each), will increasing the number of beacons (and hence the RF traffic even when the network is idle) pose a problem? Also, I'm a little less clear as to how this would improve connectivity.
Since these settings will affect all users, I want to make sure that I'm using settings that will be beneficial on the whole. The last thing I want to do is inadvertantly make things worse, and since I can't test things directly from the standpoint of each user.

Aug 4, 2011I have a wireless network in a 2 storey house. The internet access and 1 WRT54GS router is on the 1st floor (using frequency channel 11). The wireless single doesn't do very well on the second floor unless there is a device with a strong antenna. I recently purchased a WET610N Bridge and I have an extra WRT54GS (using frequency channel 1).
I would like to be able to add wireless to the 2nd floor by attaching the extra router to the bridge which would wirelessly connect to the router with the internet.

After the intial setup I can log into the main router wrt54gl (192.168.1.1)and all 3 WDS routers (192.168.1.2 ,3 and 4), but after couple of days of testing suddenly i can not login to 2 of the WDS routers,
I mean I can connect to it and it will get me to internet but I can no longer login, it just says the page take too long to load. I know if I do a hard reset and setup WDS again then it will work, but I dont want to keep doing that. Tried to power cycle the router but still wont work. Is it the load on the router made it inaccessible ?

Linksys Wireless Router :: WRT54G Can't Access A Particular Range Of Internet
Aug 3, 2012We have a WRT54G (hardware v6) which we have used for a couple years in conjunction with a cable modem to make a home wifi network. In the past few days, we've been unable to access any sites in the IP range 130.160.x.x (that is, those at The University of Alabama). A particular example is ua.edu (130.160.4.131). The rest of the internet works fine.This is on Ubuntu 12.04, Windows 7, or Android ICS; with Chrome, Firefox, IE9, or SSH. If I connect the modem to an Ubuntu laptop directly by USB, I can get to ua.edu just fine.
I tried resetting the router to factory defaults, upgrading the firmware, connecting via ethernet rather than wifi, and using the Google DNS servers 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 in the router, but the problem persists. Naturally, UA's helpdesk, Comcast, and Linksys were all either useless or uncooperative. [code]
Extending Range Of Linksys WRT54GL?

What would be good solution in my case? I'd like something wireless, don't want to drag cables downstairs.

What is the technically correct way to have a strong wi-fi signal at Zone B (with the same SSID, key-phrase, etc.)? b. If I take another WRT54GL router, set the same SSID and key-phrase, disable its DHCP and plug it to the ethernet cable in Zone B - will that do the trick? I've tried the Linksys range extender at a friend's house and it turned out to be a big flop.

I have run a Cat5E wire from the house to the shop 110 feet away and connected a WRT54GS to the Cat5E (a LAN Port). I turned off DHCP and assigned it a static IP from the House WRT54G. Local wired connections work great, problem is it will not offer up a wireless IP address to wireless clients.I wired up a cross over cable and actually plugged it into the WAN port, it actually picked up and offered wirelessly the House IP address range, however, could not get to the internet. Why I can't wire to WRT54G and a GS together and expect a wireless connection at the shop site?

May 2, 2012I have both a Sony XBR52HX909 and a Sony BDP-S580 connected to my router (WRT54GL)via ethernet. When I try to connect to the internet, both show the wired connection as good but neither can connect to the internet. The BDP-S580 also has wireless connectivity, but it can’t connect to the internet wirelessly. I have two desktop computers connected via ethernet and two laptops connected wirelessly to the same router and all have internet connectivity. I have tried the “auto” settings on the TV and Blu-Ray player and also tried entering the network information in manually. I still can’t connect to the internet.

It can't ping the modem, and it doesn't show up on on the list of devices connected to the modem. DHCP assigns an IP address of 127.0.0.1, which is outside the range of the modem [192.168.1.1 ... 192.168.1.253]. The router is also showing a default gateway of 0.0.0.0, and a subnet mask of 255.0.0.0. (And yes, I have released and renewed the lease, rebooted the modem, and reconnected the modem.) The router WAN side is set to DHCP, and the operating mode was changed from gateway to router (the gateway setting doesn't work either, for that matter).

I am wondering if there is any benefit with using an 802.11n wireless router to access the Internet? The maximum theoretical speed of the WRT54GL router is 54 Mbps (802.11g), which is faster than the 15 Mbps provided by my ISP.
I know that 802.11n has a max bandwidth of 300 Mbps, and it would work for intra- house transfers, such as streaming video from one computer to another.
But is there any benefit to 802.11n for Internet activity, such as web browsing, gaming, and streaming video from Netflix.

Aug 26, 2011I had configured the AAA server on CoovaAP and was able to access the internet.I had configured the user name and password as a "testuser" and "password" respectively. With that user id i used to access the Coova AP router and internet.Now i want restore the WRT54GL firmware on Lynksys router. But with the used id and password which i had configured the router is not at all accessible. So i did 30-30-30 reset on the router 2-3 times. Now i can see openwrt login page with 192.168.1.1 IP address. It is asking for user id and password. I tried all the combinations of user id and password, but no luck. I browsed some link on the internet and some people have recommended that default user id as a "root" and blank password. But with that also the router is not accessible. I cant to do much on the router untill i will log in to router. I have spent lot of time on this. How to restore back the original WRAT54GL firmware on my router. Anyhow i want WRAT54GL firmware on Lynksys router

Jul 3, 2012We have received from a customer of us an WRT54GL box configured with a Coova software. This Wifi router was supposed to be a Wifi hotspot, but was not configured by us. This box is able, on startup, to get an IP by DHCP, to touch a remote Radius server, and so on (we "tcpdump" the Internet traffic, and we saw DNS requests, radius requests, ...)...
But, we are unable to connect to this box,by SSH or by HTTP, either by plug-in PC to the Internet RJ45 or the LAN RJ45. It has no IP as 192.168.1.1. Instead, it was configured to have 192.168.1.1 as gateway.
Of course, we have no doc on previous install, but only the admin/root password for SSH.We are afraid to lose the config (coova, ...) if we perform a hard reset.What is the best way for connecting on this box ?

Oct 24, 2009Why this router have DHCP server and Port forwarding features and many LAN ports, but does not have DHCP reserve feature? If I can plug many computers, each one get own IP address, but how I can't fix it? I need to port forwarding of course, but if lease time ended, next time my computer got other IP address, so I need to reconfigure port forwarding each time! Of course I can do it, but try to explain it for your wife? Yes, I can use static IP addresses, but for what this box have DHCP server?
