Protocols / Routing :: Extending Wireless Range?
Aug 19, 2011In a bit of a predicament. We're from Ireland and we've two houses on the farm that are exactly 108m as the crow flies. The main house is where we live and the other is more of an office type small house. We've no phone line or internet connection in it and the location is in a dip where we've bad mobile/cell connection. We're don't want to pay an extra55 a month for phone line and internet just to use the internet maybe twice a week. We have a wireless connection in the main home house and want to extend it to the other. I know there are ways but confuesed as to which to use.

Feb 8, 2013Sending WiFi signal about 1/4 mile from my home to where my daughter lives so she can use her Samsung Galaxy2 Tablet on WiFi.There are homes, condos and trees in between us, so it is not a clear path.So far this is what I have done.I am using a modem and a Netgear WNR834B Wireless N Router.I connected a Hawkins Laptop Extender (HWREN Wireless 150N Mini Extender * single antenna outlet) into the router and connected a WiFi cable from the Hawkins to my tower outside above my roof and have attached a 10 dbi gain Trendnet antenna (omnidirectional) to the cable.But still the WiFi signal doesn't seem to be very strong at all when I test with my phone.And obviously, my daughters tablet does not see my router when she has her tablet search for WiFi.I also tried a 14dbi WIfi ASUS directional antenna and basically came up with the same outcome... she could not see the WiFi signal..My daughter lives in a condo and is not capable or allowed to install any outside antenna system whatsoever.

Jul 10, 2011My wireless router in my downstairs office won't reach an upstairs bedroom on the other side of my house. I'd like to extend the range. It is not clear if my best option is to get an antenna to boost the range (such as an Alfa 500mW AWUS036H USB Wireless Adapter 802.11 b/g Network Radio Card. Includes 2dBi Omni Antenna ), or to get a repeater to repeat the signal, such as a Hawking HWREN1 Hi-Gain Wireless-300N Range Extender. I also don't know if Linksys has a product for either application that works with 802.11n standard.Finally, since the Linksys E2500 has no antenna or antenna port visible, I am nod sure if an antenna such as the Alfa listed above or a Hawking HSB2 HiGain Signal Booster would even work with the E2500.

Mar 30, 2011We currently use the DIR 655 in our home. I has a great range, and we've never had any problems. Our house is a very tall Victorian, so some areas don't get as strong a signal as others. I'd like to set up a few addition devices to extend the coverage of our network.
I installed a DAP 1522 as a bridge to our entertainment PC. After a while of trying to sort out how to configure it everything is working there. The 1522 is connected to the PC via cable.
I still want to extend the overall wireless range to better cover the lower floors and back porch.
From reading the manual on the 1522 I am a bit confused. I understand how it works as a bridge, connecting devices via cable. Will it also extend the range is set as an Access Point without needing the devices to connect via cable?

Feb 17, 2013I want to go from my asus rt-n66u router wirelessly to another device that I can plug an ethernet cord from a desktop computer. I work on computers and my workstation cannot be close to my router. Instead of installing a wireless adapter everytime I work on a computer, I want something that I can plug an ethernet cord into that will connect wirelessly to my router. I just want to get an internet connection to my work computers without having to run an ethernet cord across my front room. I have read so much about bridging and access points but can't really figure out what would be best or what my router is capable of. I have tried in WDS mode and couldn't get to work with another router I have and also read it cuts you bandwidth and also forces you to use WEP securit

Jun 8, 2011I have an existing network in a 300 year old structure. There is a base router from which there are 3 wired (ethernet) lines to parts of the structure. Due to the structure itself (near 2 ft thick walls - masonry) the wireless from the base router reaches only a short distance. I would like to "extend" the wireless reach using those 3 existing runs. So - can I add 3 more routers or should I go with Wireless Access Points or what else would work?

With the configs i have tried.I have cloned the mac addy for the wifiAP i have shared. This should be enough. And i should be able to walk it across the street and have it act as the same wifiAP. And he should have the net, via my pc. I tried to use another wifi device to connect to the shared IP...And the router itself...But there was no internet. have tried to configure this router to work as a repeater as well using it's setup. This resulted in no internet connectivity over lan, and no wifi service listing. These is no way for me to tell it which router or device it should be repeating from...
I have tried manually configureing the mn-700 To use the same ip the other router does for it's services. The mn-700 doesn't keep the settings. When it does there is no internet or wifi services.When i have it setup on it's own, no config changes...It'll connect over wifi to the router but there is no net. I can connect a lan wire going to the other router and renew it's lease. This will give the mn-700 an ip addy as if it were another pc. It uses this as it's WAN config

Jun 3, 2011I'm an electrical engineer by trade, and fairly inept at networking. That being said, I am looking to extend the maximum range of my networking equipment. I have a job which requires around 500' between switches, and am trying to find a clever way to bridge the gap. The span is direct-burial cat5e, and has very low bandwidth requirements. I know you can buy off-the-shelf range extenders, but they are expensive, so I thought maybe I could avoid it.
1. It my understanding that the lower speed protocols (10 Mbps rather that 100, 1000) have a longer maximum operating length, because they utilize a lower frequency and consequently see a lower impedance. If so, are there network switches that I can force to use the lower baseband frequencies?
2. Should I bother trying to find a cable with the lowest characteristic impedance (or will they all be similar)? Cat 5e is pretty good, yes?
3. Should I do half or full-duplex; is this something I can control as well?
4. What network switches are cheap and allow this type of configurability?
5. If I attach other switches to the ends of this 500' ethernet bridge with auto-negotiating feature, will there be any conflicts or they will all get along?

Apr 13, 2012I've been looking around for quite some time and can't find a complete answer. I have a Linksys WRT54GL router handling my home wireless network located in the living room (let's call it 'Zone A').I have an ethernet cable running from that router to the other end of the house (let's call this one 'Zone B'), where the wi-fi signal is very weak. a. What is the technically correct way to have a strong wi-fi signal at Zone B (with the same SSID, key-phrase, etc.)? b. If I take another WRT54GL router, set the same SSID and key-phrase, disable its DHCP and plug it to the ethernet cable in Zone B - will that do the trick? I've tried the Linksys range extender at a friend's house and it turned out to be a big flop.

Dec 11, 2012how to properly configure 2 different hardware devices to extend the current wifi signal of my home network.I'm using a Motorola SBG6580 DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem as my primary access point (AP) and a Netgear N300 DGN2200v1 ADSL2+ modem router which will function "behind" the SBG6580 in repeater mode. I previously had DSL for my internet connectivity but recently switched to broadband cable for faster speeds.Due to the layout of my home, I cannot physically connect the Netgear router to the Motorola modem via ethernet cable and need both devices to communicate wirelessly. I have already done extensive reading on this subject and best practices suggest that, whenever possible, both units should be the same brand/manufacturer. The Netgear appliance does have the capability of being configured as a repeater so if I don't have to buy a "network extender" that would be my preference.I understand that both units must be configured to have the same SSID, subnet, wireless channel and security encryption. In repeater mode the Netgear router can't be configured to use WPA2-PSK so I need to use WEP instead.

I have a egenious ap/bridge model EOC2611P that is linked to my home network at my shop to my house. I have internet through the cat5 cable coming out of the bridge but having issues connecting that to the other wirless router. The second router is a linksys e1000. I live out in bfe so no network security seince my closest neighbor is a little over a mile away. I have dissabled DCHP on the linksys and thats where my knowledge stops. Jul 28, 2012My sister has just purchased a custom built desktop computer that will not connect to the household network. We have various other computers and devices that connect to the router (Thompson Gateway TG782T) without any problems. Just to be sure I've tried reseting the router to factory settings to no avail.
I've tried connecting her computer to the network through the TP-Link Wireless Adpater (TL-WN881ND) that came with her computer AND through a Netgear Wireless USB Adapter (WG111v2). In both situations the network is detected, the network password is requested (and accepted) but the result is always that she has 'limited connectivity', cannot access the internet and cannot detect any shared network drives.
I've tried connecting with an Ethernet cable as well, which her computer does not detect at all ('network cable unplugged').When I try to troubleshoot any of these problems I get a message that says 'The Diagnostics Policy Service is not running'.The guys at the shop where my sister had it built are asking her to bring the computer in with the router becuse they are convinced that the machine is fine, and that the router is at fault. May 26, 2011I have 3 computers running Windows-7. One computer is directly attached with wired connection to broadband internet modem and other 2 computers are attached through a Wireless router attached to modem. The problem is this that both wireless computers are running internet well while the directly connected computer shows internet connection but no data flow happens. When the Wireless router is turned off the directly connected computer starts working internet.

Feb 16, 2011I setup a D-Link DIR-825, VB1, Firmware V2.00NA about a month ago. We have 3 Macs here at home - 1 brand new iMac, a G4 Powerbook, and an old G4 / 933 Tower. The G4 tower is connected via ethernet. The other two through Wi-Fi. My problem is that I can barely use the internet for even a few minutes on the G4 tower, connected via Ethernet, without losing my connection. I can be in the middle of loading a page or an image, and suddenly it will say "Waiting for xxx.com". Then if I try to go to Google.com or something I will invariably get "Looking up xxx.com". The connection usually returns on it's own, but it can take up to 3 or 5 minutes. When I get this message on the ethernet G4 tower, I will also have lost connection on the wireless Macs. For the first couple of weeks the tower was not connected and we were just using the two wireless Macs, and they were working well. It seems that as soon as I hooked up the G4 tower via ethernet, connections became very flaky and intermittent all of a sudden.All the Macs are configured for DHCP. We have a Time Warner cable modem. The G4 tower had previously been used at my office with it's own dedicated DSL modem / router, and it worked flawlessly for months at a time without dropping a connection. I've tried rebooting the modem, then the router, then turning all the Macs back on, several times. Same result. I just tried loading the new firmware but it didn't work. Said the Gateway was too crowded or something.

Oct 8, 2011I need reverting to wired internet connection on a desktop running XP Home SP3. I had moved the computer and intended to use a wireless connection on my existing Linksys router. I had gone so far as to install a driver for a USB adapter and seemed to be connected OK although the machine was a little slow to respond. At that point I realized I needed to secure the network. The first thing I read was that I needed a wired connection to the router to do that. I used Ghost to restore to a time before I installed the driver and then, with the computer shut down, hooked up an Ethernet cable from the router to the computer and booted up. I expected to be connected as I was before the move but am not. Ive got the icon in the tray that says a LAN cable is un-plugged and dont know what to do to get connected again.

The connection speed is spotty and fluctuates between downloading at around 100-200kBs and having a ping of around 30 in online games (rare) or download rates measure in bytes (normal). Google takes about 10 seconds to load and I can't access steam. I was wondering if this was due to the length of the cable running the length of the garden (about 20m) or some other issue - it is not the computer as I get the same result with my laptop and my desktop, both of which have no trouble when connecting in the main house.

I have a Cisco Linksys E2500 which is bridged to a actiontec mi424wr router (Verizon Fios router). My fiance's computer is wired while my laptop is wireless.When I originally set up the network I had 2 mi424wr bridged together but it dropped very frequently. Switching the router and upgrading the firmware has made in happen less but it is still frequent enough to warrant trouble.

Jul 12, 2011Basically for no apparent reason one day when I came home several weeks ago my wired internet connection has become almost unusable. The connection to the internet severs every couple of minutes, sometimes every few seconds. The only way to get my connection back is to either wait around half an hour and it fixes itself, or to use the ''diagnose connection problems'' in the INternet Explorer tools menu. For some reason this tool fixes the problem nearly everytime, how often I have to use this tool and wait for the internet. I cannot download many important things I need as the connection keeps severing and the download is 'interrupted' (within Google Chrome).I first tried reformatting my whole system, but to no avail. I am running a fresh installation of Windows XP service Pack 3.
I have a cable running from my wall (ADSL conection I believe) that connects into a router. This router is then connected to ANOTHER router via a blue network cable (Im not quite sure the reason for this my step-dad had it set up like this when I moved here. I think it is because the 2nd router does not have a jack that fits the ADSL line coming from the wall). I am wired directly from my computer into the first router. I have tried connecting to the other router to no avail. Chrome generally tells me that there is a DNS error when I try to load a page and the connection drops out. [code] Could it be a faulty router, faulty cables, or a software issue? I have the latest network adapter installed and power save mode is switched OFF. I would like to know if replacing the cables/router would fix things.
