View 1 RepliesMy desktop has always been connected via ethernet cable but I'm about to move to the Middle of Nowhere, Alberta and will be mooching off a school's wireless internet that's about 400m away apparently. Not sure if that's door-to-door or not...so it may not actually be 400m away. Anyway, the principal said other people get the internet from the same distance but it's "inconsistent".

I'm trying to diagnose & repair a problem with the built in wireless adapter on a gateway NV53. The OS is 64 bit Win 7. The computer isn't mine, I was just trying to repair it for a friend. Initially, the wifi worked fine; the disk drive seemed to have a bad laser or something, sometimes there were problems with printers, it was slow to start, etc., so I thought I would just backup everything, "restore to factory defaults" (reformat & reinstall OS from hidden partition), then copy everything back / reinstall programs. I wanted to reformat just to clean it up, etc. After reformatting and updating windows to the latest version, it seemed to work fine (I hadn't tested those other problems, they are unimportant). However, after the computer is on for awhile - anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours - the wireless adapter suddenly can't see any networks. There are several networks in the area, so I know it isn't a problem with my router (also, other comps. can see them all still) After awhile longer, the wireless adapter disappears completely from device manager. I think that when it initially loses track of all the networks, the mouse, typing, etc. slow down and have jerky movement for a minute (may be incidental). When I restart the computer, the adapter works fine again, but of course, only for awhile.
Things I've tried:
-Setting the power settings on the adapter (don't allow power saving to turn this off.. box)
-reformatting
-updating drivers
-updating windows
-running antivirus
-uninstalling the antivirus

2) Netgear N600 wireless dual band usb adapter.
The netgear one I'm using right now just says, "scanning" constantly. Here's diagnostics:

View 3 Replies View Relatedi just recently built a new computer (well today) and i plugged in a wirless usb adaptor that was about 2 years old and it was pretty fast but it still lagged my game starcraft (i was just trying it out to see how the computer would handle it). I went out and bought a brand new xtreme N desktop PCI adapter and it is even slower, and it disconnects every 5 seconds it seems. I installed it correctly and installed all the drivers, I also have rebooted the computer and it is still slow and wont even connect for a full youtube video. am i doing something wrong or is my adapter the problem (i am doing this on my laptop which is right beside my computer and is still connected to the internet).i cannot wire my computer to my router because it is to far away so that isn't a solution.

Could i copy the wireless adapter and paste it into my Desktop, to enable wireless connections? Obviously, we are not talking about actual cards, they are all integrated into the Motherboard.

And I have to create profile for DWA-525 desktop adapter to connect to my network and it requires the network secret key to connect. But This secret key is viewable from the "Network connection manager" when one can click on modify network and click on "Show text in the password field" by everyone using this computer (I mean by all other office staff). I don't want to let any one know my wireless network secret key. Is there any way to protect the key while having the computers automatically connected to wireless network. More information is below

The other day I went to a friends house, came back home, booted up my PC, and my wireless network adapter wasn't working. I've tried everything to fix it.It's a D-Link DWA-525 802.11n Wireless PCI netowrk adapter. On device manager it just says 802.11 Wireless LAN Card with a yellow exclamation next to it. And when I check what the error is, it's either error 31 or 52 at different times, depending what I've tried to do to fix it.I tried downloading the driver for it off the D-Link website, nothing happens at all when I install it. I tried taking it out of my computer and plugging it in. I tried enabling it and disabling it on device manager.I noticed one thing, when it's in my computer the green light at the back that says activity next to it isn't on.

But it seems the software only supported wireless connections, am I just sol? Is there some way to get my desktop to update the drivers for the router?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have been having some connectivity problems and one suggested solution was to upgrade networking firmware. I did this for our router (Cisco RVS4000 v2) and it didn't work, so I moved on to the wireless access points (two WAP4410N). Before doing that, I also reset both to factory default settings - neither would respond to pressing the reset button but it seemed to work using the web interface for both.
Before I did anything to the WAP4410Ns, I noticed they were connected in B/G/N-Mixed mode to channel 6. Now the wireless network mode is stuck on Disable. I can choose B/G/N-Mixed from the dropdown list, but can't choose a channel - the dropdown list for that is empty. And if I try to choose Save after choosing B/G/N-Mixed, it reverts to Disable.
I have an EA3500. PPPoE connection. Can't seem to choose my DNS server (use Unblock-US) since the router insistently forces me to use the DNS from ISP.How can i work this around? I'm kinda tired of people asking me why i am changing the DNS. I want to change the DNS and that's final. It's a resource like any other and i want to use it.P.S: i tried most of the basic troubleshooting. I tried my old router back on and the DNS's works fine. I tried even conecting the old router re-routing the new one, and the other router manages the selected DNS's servers fine.
