LAN Shares Dropping / Slow On Private Subnet
Mar 11, 2012
The shares on the LAN constantly drop(for 4-5 seconds usually) or slow down and then speed up again. This only happens on the PCs using the private subnet but the internet is fine. We don't have any problems with shares on the public subnet though.Private subnet goes through a proxy server to reach the internet.Recently we had an internet outage in the building and suddenly shares weren't dropping or running slow anymore.

I have a Motorola SBG6580 wireless gateway/router and am happy with it in general. I had a 192.168.2.n subnet with old Linksys but I find that I cannot change the MOT from its pre-set 192.168.0.n net to the ..2.net because it conflicts with a "private LAN" in the same range. How do I change the provate lan to, for example, ..9.n so I can use the ...2.n net? I'm running with the ..0.n now, just fine, but, I VPN into office and primary net there is ..0.n and so is confusing with IP shortcuts/conflicts. how to make the change?

I have 3 or 4 devices connected via a wireless connection, 2 of which are in the same room. Roughly a week ago, my desktop (Vista OS) started to suffer from severely reduced download speeds (5-30kb/s), while my laptop (also Vista OS) which is on the same wireless network continues to run at normal speeds (500kb/s-1mb/s).
I have tried a system restore, scanning for viruses, updating/disabling antivirus and firewalls, connecting directly to LAN, changed wireless interface speed from g to b to mixed, changed wireless channels from 1-6-11, nothing seems to work.
I have a Thomson TG782T router with a D-Link wireless card (which is rather old).

I have RV110W connected in private network 192.168.5.0/24, I have redirected pptp port from adsl modem to the RV110W and VPN works OK. DDNS on the adsl modem is not available.I need to use Dynamic DNS functionality on my RV110W. The device supports several DDNS services (TZO.com, Dyn DNS.com, 3322.org and noip.com). For all but TZO the public "Internet IP Address" shows as 192.168.5.110, which also gets auto registered with the DDNS service.I have tested this with free noip.com account and this is obviously undesired behavior. I need the router to register my real public IP.For TZO it shows the proper public IP, but TZO service is no longer available on TZO.com.

my RV042 is not able to propperly update my ddns. If you try to resolve my dyndns subnet kitus-network.dyndns.org you will get 192.168.0.2. How can I make the router update my ddns with the real public ip rather than the private ip it "sees" on the WAN interface?

Having got a new Windows 7 (64 bit Ultimate) PC, I decided to turn my old PC (XP Pro) into a file server. After much fun with Windows networking, I have one particular problem. Listing files on the server from the Win7 machine is ridiculously slow. A few directories have large numbers of files in them, around 10,000 image files. Browsing to one such folder on Win7, I have timed a listing and it took 48 seconds! That's a very long time to wait for a file listing. I have a network connection monitor running and it doesn't seem to be overloading the network- data was dribbling down the 100Base-T cable at about 200kiloBITS per second. Trying things the other way around, the same folder if placed on the Win7 machine and listed from the old XP machine can deliver a complete listing in about 5 seconds. I'm not sure which end has the problem; either the server is delivering file names very slowly or (my guess) the Win 7 machine is asking for them very slowly, perhaps asking for lots of crap that isn't needed like icons or file dimensions or something.

I recently bought a new Inspiron 15R Special Edition less than 3 weeks ago. It has recently started playing up with the internet. I've reset the router, and deleted and reconnected to the internet connection but it has stayed the same.
I have also been having problems with some computer programs. McAfee and windows threat both decided to shut down along with the firewalls. The security seems to be up and running now but my firewall doesn't seem to want to turn on.

It's a Windows 7 Pro 64bit machine with a (newly installed) Asus P8H67 pro motherboard and an Edimax ew-7612pln pci-e card, the router is a thompson 585v8 router with the latest firmware on (upgraded as part of troubleshooting). I upgraded the wireless card drivers one time whilst it was disconnected, it appeared to work for a few hours but then dropped again it also went through a phase of connecting to the router as an 'unidentified network' with no internet access although I don't believe it was attaining an IP address. When it was connected the internet was pretty slow and anything like a file down load would knock it off completely. There were no errors at the time of disconnection in the event log (bar a DNS error or two saying it could not locate the website I was trying to get to before it failed), however the only information type events I noted were a few services stopping and starting and an odd one regarding the host not being able to find the 'master browser' which was identified as another laptop on the wireless network.
The machines are not in the same work group or in a domain, all other laptops and devices on the network work fine and are very stable - as was this one up until a couple of weeks ago. I've uninstalled a couple of pieces of software that were recently installed ; VMware player (which added virtual NICs upon installation and funnily enough made the wireless reconnect after a few hours of downtime upon installation...but the effect was shortlived) and some asus mobo utilities.

What I am trying to do is I have one switch with say a 10.1.9.1 sub-net I need to have one of the ports to be trucked with two vlans one for DSL and the other for a local connection with the sub-net of 10.1.5.1 both of the sub-nets are configured in the core as 9 and 5 so I have port 0 set up as a trunk and it is set up as ge-0/0/0.0 vlan_5, vlan_192 on the 10.1.9.1 subnet switch. The DSL is working but the local is not pulling a 10.1.5.1 IP and has no connectivity. Everything looks as if it is configured correctly but still the DSl is working but not the Local connection.

Have a school which is split into 2 domains (and 2 different subnets). A logged in windows domain user from domain A needs to access a windows share on domain B. So I made a bat file on the pc in domain A to map a drive to the share on domain B, using the net use command but specifying login credentials of a domain user from domain B.The pc on domain A has it's hosts file edited so it can access the server on domain B which the share is on, ping and everything to this server works fine.I created a user in domain B with the corresponding login details as in the batch file, same un and pwd, it didn't work. If I specify the un and pwd in the batch file as the domain admin account on domain B, it works fine everytime. I'm pretty sure it's not a premissions thing as I have given the inital user that I specified in the batch file full control to the share permissions and security permissions on the share in question, it still wouldn't work.
All I can think of, but can't put into good technical words, is that this user I am specifying in the batch file not only needs to have access to the share itself but has to enter the other domain as well, would there be some protocol or something in which it does not have permissions to use effictively but the domain admin clearly does as it works fine for domain admin?

On my network, I have 2 PCs running Windows 7 Ult, and 2 PCs running WinXP-Pro.When my XP PCs browse a shared folder living on a Win7 PC, not all files or folders are listed. It is as if once a certain number of filenames have been listed, something gives up.For example, on my WIndows 7 PC, I have a folder with about 400 folders of pictures. The XP PCs only see about 300 folders. The number is consistent as far as the number of folders the XP clients see. It is not a permission problem, because if I move some of the low-numbered folders out of the share, then the names at the bottom of the folder list start to appear.I even copied all picture folders to the other Windows 7 PC, and created a fresh share and still the XP clients only see the same limited number of folders or files. It also seems to be based on a percentage, and not a finite limit of file or folder names. For example, if I have 700 objects in a folder, only 500 are visible on the client. If I have 400 objects in a folder, only 300 are visible.

I am finally switching over my work computer from Windows XP to Windows 7. I have multiple network connections I connect to when I boot up. I've set myself as a new user on the servers I have to connect to, Windows 7 asked me to put in my username and password for each share, all connects fine but when I shutdown and restart, I see all my Shares as red x'ed "disconnected" and as I click on each one, I have to put in my username and password again. Windows XP always remembered my connections and logged me onto each share at boot up. I've checked "remember my credentials" but it's not doing it, Am I missing something? on any restart or shutdown, I have to click on each share and put in my login credentials.

I recently did a clean install of Win 7 64-bit Pro on my workstation. This was previously connected to my DNS (Windows server 2008 R2) which i use to host my files, music etc for my home network. I was previously able to see my network shares in windows explorer (client side) but now I don't. If i go to search box and \server the shared folders will then be displayed in windows explorer under network and i have access to them. I've done a small amount of digging but have so far found nothing to point me in the right direction. So while i have access i would like to be able to point windows media player to my shared music on the server, which i can't do now because I have no way to navigate to that folder. Same with other programs such as outlook, when i want to attach a file to an email i'm not able to navigate to the share. Weird as i have access to the share by search \server?

I'm running Windows 7 and I want to share folders with other users on my University network. I have the sharing enabled and people within my broadcast domain (the dorms) are able to access my shares. The problem occurs when trying to access those shares from academic buildings which are in a different broadcast domain (and are part of a different VLAN).I have verified with Wireshark that the requests to access the shared media do reach the Windows 7 computer, but for some reason it doesn't respond.

I have a Windows 7 machine sending shares across the network. Other Windows 7 machines have no problems connecting, but XP machines cannot connect. (Win7 can connect to XP shares).
I have adjust every setting that I have seen to no avail. This includes turning off HomeGroups, turning off password. Removing my password from my user account. Adding "Everyone" to each of the shares. I have even messed with the Local Group Policy Editor to send unencrypted passwords to third party SMB's.

I have the Apple Time Capsule connected to my ISP using PPPoE and it is working just fine creating a wired and wireless network. The IP address of TC is 192.168.1.1 and I have set it's DHCP range between .100 to .200Next, I wanted to add VPN to the router as I live outside the US and wanted to access some services in the US. So I got an ASUS router and flashed it with Tomato firmware.I assigned the ASUS as IP address of 192.168.1.10, connected this it to a LAN port on the Apple and used a DHCP type Internet connection to set it up. I then created a second WiFi Network and gave the DHCP range between .11 to .20Now using any Wi-Fi device, I can connect to either of these networks and browse the web just fine. The ASUS is all setup as a VPN client so any traffic going through the ASUS is through a US based VPN.

I have a PPTP VPN setup in RRAS on Windows SBS 2008.
The VPN seems to works fine, I can ping everything on the other end of the tunnel. RDP into workstations, access shares on the workstations. I can telnet into the exchange server and send mail. Get the default IIS page at http://server.
From the SBS I could even map shares I have on my local workstations, but when I try to access any of the shares on the server over the VPN using hostname or IP it fails, "The network path was not found".
Not really sure whats going on here, I've shut the firewall off without success. I reconfigured the VPN from scratch and rebooted the server and it didn't change a thing. I'm unsure how long this has been like this since no one uses the VPN to access file shares on the server. The few that use it just RDP into their workstations, no issue there. Though recently they started replacing a few desktops with laptops and they have nothing to RDP into, they only need access to a few spreadsheets while at home or on the road so I thought the VPN would work, I guess not..

I currently have a problem with connecting to some CIFS shares on a EMC NAS. I have created some bookmarks for those shares to be used via the client less SSL VPN portal. I have also setup SSO which works properly for web-bookmarks and RDP stuff but not for the CIFS shares.
When I try to access those shares I'll always get a "authentication failed" error message. Afterwards a new log in-box is displayed. I have been able to log in to those shares by using the user-ID prefixed with the domain name [URL]. Log in fails when using only the user-ID or for example DOMAIN user-ID. I have also tried with a share on a different Server (windows2008 R2) which works without any problems.

I`ll get straight to the point. I have at work a domain of computers. on one of the computers (I have admin rights) I want to share a folder that can be accessed by other computers that are not in the domain. By default accessing that share requires a user/pass. My question is: can I configure something on the computer (running windows 2008 server) to the shared folder so that other computers that are not from the domain will gain access to without user/pass requirement (like a normal share)?

I replaced my old Linksys WRT54G wireless router with the new E3000 wireless router. The installation was a breeze, but not what followed henceforth. I was able to access the internet on my wireless desktop/laptop/Netflix ROKU player/WD TV live media player, but lost access to all the network shares. I spent a lot of useless time with Linksys chat support and phone support, where they said their responsibility is only getting the internet working. They said they are not responsible for file and printer sharing issues, and suggested I use a third-party paid support package to resolve my issues. Over and above spending a hefty amount for the lates top of the line E3000 router, I was not going to shell out additional money for support.
Thinking that it could probably be due to some Windows XP firewall/anti-virus (McAfee) issues, I disconnected the E3000 and connected the old WRT54G back again. Lo and behold, everything started working fine again. I could access the shared folders of my desktop (to which my router is attached) and printer, from the wireless laptop/desktop/media player just as before without any problems. I then switched back to the E3000 and lost the shares again. So I have come to the conclusion, there is definitely some setting within the E3000 that is preventing the file and printer sharing. I just can't figure out what it could be, and am at a point of returning it back to the store as defective. The extra N-speed is useless to me if my devices can't access the network shared content. Also, I tried to set up the UPnP media server feature of the E3000 by attaching USB storage and configuring it via the Linksys web based utility, but my media player is unable to access the content.

Upon attaching my external storage I was able to create a share, copy files and access it successfully from everywhere. Now when I attempt to add an additional share, the router lets me create it but when I try to move access groups over from the available groups, the >> buttons are greyed out. The one working share has the admin and Everyone groups with access. Any additional share I create has the admin group in it by default, but I can't add any more groups. I am logged into the router as admin and logged into the pc as a local admin. I am also unable to change the rights from my pc on a share (access denied). I AM, however, able to map a drive to a new share successfully, but when I copy files over, a few minutes later the filenames are there but they show up as 0 byte files.

Going into the menus it shows my drive as having full capacity available. Well i konw thats not true. i unplugged it and directly connected it to a PC. All of my info was there. I connected it back to the router and nothing. No shares of any sorts. It shows it detected the drive. Does not show USB speed and does not allow you to create new shares.
