Laptop Won't Figure Out Network - Undefined
May 27, 2011
My laptop will either connect somedays or won't connect at all!!!! Sometimes it will connect but wont figure out my network call it "Undefined" and makes it a public access and then its super slow.....even though its MY secured wireless! Its a Linksys N router and it worker great when we had At&T, but since we moved we could only get stupid Comcast.... My sister's Ipod Touch connects fine so what gives??? I've tried power cycling, and pulling up my router's page and followed instructions with MAC addresses and all that stuff. Its working now (after restarting my lap top twice-removing the network from my list and re-connecting to put in the password and then restarting) but who knows for how long!

This past weekend I went out of town and took my Windows 7 laptop with me -- since I returned home, it has been unable to connect to my wireless network. Other devices in my home connect to the network just fine, and the problem laptop has always been fine until now. My network card is an Atheros AR9285, and I'm attempting to connect to a Medialink router with WPA password protection and AES encryption. My wireless network icon in the task bar has a yellow sign with an exclamation point in it. It says "No Internet access."

I'm experimenting/attempting to use a laptop as a network tap between my (DSL) modem and a wrt54gs by creating a bridge with two NICs in the laptop. My problem is I can't seem to get connectivity on the user end of the router. I can't ping the bridge from an end computer...
DHCP is disabled in the router, but even when manually configuring the IP address on an end computer and using the bridge as a default gateway I can't ping out.
Am I completely misunderstanding the purpose of a NIC bridge?

I have a Dell Optiplex running XP wired to a Netgear router. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1501 running Windows 7. When I got the new router everything programed easily and I could retrieve files from my desktop and print remotely. Sometimes I would have to "refresh" before the laptop would detect the desktop but now it will not detect the desktop or the printer. I suspect that a Microsoft Update did this but just guessing. I went back and deleted the updates that downloaded around the time that this stopped working. I have tried every thing that I can think of to get it back working but can not get it fixed.

... and made a fundamental mistake of uninstalling adapters hastily without looking into it. Now when I try to re-install the adapters, I'm running into difficulties. Specifically, I don't have the CD-ROM I originally must have used, and the following message is popping up: "Files Needed - The file 'atl02_2k.sys' on Atlansic Fast Ethernet Adapter Installation Disk is needed. Type the path where the file is located and then click OK." Unfortunately, I don't have any idea if there is a path where this is located, so installation cannot complete.
The reason I took this option to begin with was that the wireless connection on my laptop [Asus, Windows XP] was acquiring network address without ever connecting fully to the internet. I had previously tried another of other methods, such as manually entering an IP address, to no avail.

We have a working home network with 4 pcs connected to the network. 3 via ethernet and 1 via wireless. Everything is working fine. Then we have 2 more laptops which are connecting via wireless. When either of those 2 laptops joins the network, the whole network stops working for a minute or 2. After that it starts working again for everybody (including those 2 laptops). However its super annoying when it does that all the time. (The laptop goes into sleep mode, when u turn it back on again the internet(and the whole network) stops working for awhile again..).

I want to use two different networks in my laptop. When I go to my head office every ip and dns server is automatic (that where I work) but when I go to one of our branches they have manual ip. These days for some reason I have to more often stay in my branches. So when I come back again to my workplace it's not working as it's manual with different gateway and dns server. Even I tried "alternative configuration" in Internet properties but it's not working.

My current IT people are so expensive, I am determined to hook up a new laptop to my office network if it destroys me (wirelessly). I have the office network map with all usernames, passwords, and IP addresses...but I can't figure it out. Can someone give me a step by step for dummies to save me the several hundred or should I just bite the bullet? (I am the business owner and seems like we add laptops every year or so and desktops and would really love to finally understand)

I recently bought a new laptop for university, but before I go I want to transfer all my PC data to it (which includes large amounts of music and films). Effectively, or, well, uneffectively I guess, I set up a Home Network sharing system between the two computers. After a bit of fiddling around, I managed to connect the two so I could transfer date directly from the PC to the Laptops desktop. However, with the CAT-E Ethernet cable (which I thought was capable of 100mbps) its actually sitting just under 9 mbps transfer speed.

Everything was ok, for a long time, then few days ago, i woke up and where was no internet connection on my laptop, i saw my neighbors wifi's but not mine. So i tried typical things: restarted laptop, restarted wifi on laptop, restarted router, but no luck. Then i checked, with my other laptop and it was working like charm. Then I tried, everythink i could think about it: disable and reanabled wifi card, reinstalled drivers, reseted factory setings on router, but no luck. Then i tried to configurate and connect to router from other laptop using PIN whitch is on the bottom of router. And it somehow made it to be able my laptop to find my home's wifi. But it lasted only for a day and same thing started. I could not find my wifi on my computer, but i could saw other wifi's, and different laptop could find and connect to my home network.

My laptop won't connect to my router however the wireless network connects to everything else in the house fine. It might work for a little bit ( sometimes an hour, sometimes only a few minutes) but then it will completely refuse to connect. The wireless LAN is enabled, it even shows full signal on the laptop it just will not connect. The LAN is enable but the button for it is blinking, I don't remember it blinking before. I'm not sure if that could be the problem. As its connecting it just says " waiting for the network" and that happens for about a minute then it just disappears.

We have a network based from a server where data is stored, such as Quickbooks files, and an employee has a laptop instead of a workspace. He needs to be able to access the Quickbooks file from his computer- we are currently using Remote Desktop Connection, however it is proving to be quite complicated for him and I need to know how to set it up. I know how to set up Quickbooks and all- the issue is with adding his laptop to the workgroup.

connect my partner's laptop to my wireless network?
The router is a Sagem provided by my ISP (Sky). The wireless connection works fine on my MacBook, and various other devices connect no problem with the security key.
However, his laptop (Windows Vista) will not connect wirelessly. After entering the password, it says it can't connect because it 'times out' (we are obviously entering the password immediately with no delay). It connects fine with an ethernet cable. It will also connect to an unsecured wireless network we can pick up.
The security setup is WPA-PSK with TKIP encryption, and we've made sure he is using these settings.
If it might be important, he has just moved here, and previously his laptop was connected to another Sky router with no problems.

So he has a Laptop which keeps disconnecting from his router but the time between the disconnects are completely random, sometimes it will be 10 seconds and other times it will be 4 hours.I have tried to sort it by the obvious ways of updating drivers, repair connection ect but nothing seems to work. Even when connected via an Ethernet cable the problem persists.I have kinda contained the problem to his laptop or the router they are using because the other laptop they have never disconnects and works perfectly fiine.

I set up a network several years ago. The network was to use a printer between an old desktop with XP and a laptop with Vista. This has worked very well until several weeks ago. I would logon to the network on the laptop through the desktop, type in the password and I was good to go. Suddenly the password does not work. The printer works fine through the desktop. We have had several lightening storms in our area recently.

My Compaq laptop (Vista) was working just fine last night, connected to my home wireless network all right and all. Today morning my laptop couldn't detect my home wireless network at all, but it could still detect a bunch of other networks from the neighbours. My iPhone can detect my network with no problems, my desktop computer is wired up to the router, works fine too. It's a D-Link DIR-655. This has happened before but usually gets solved when I reboot (switching off and on) my router. I've tried that, tried restarting my computer too, no use. Haven't tried anything beyond that because I'm an idiot with computers.
