How To Set Up Laptop On Already Configured Workgroup Network

Mar 6, 2012

We have a network based from a server where data is stored, such as Quickbooks files, and an employee has a laptop instead of a workspace. He needs to be able to access the Quickbooks file from his computer- we are currently using Remote Desktop Connection, however it is proving to be quite complicated for him and I need to know how to set it up. I know how to set up Quickbooks and all- the issue is with adding his laptop to the workgroup.

Accessing Computer In Workgroup By Laptop In Domain Using Host Name

Jul 16, 2011

I have a home computer which part of the home's workgroup and I have a office laptop which is part of a domain. Both of these are connected to the home wireless router and I can ping from one to the other via IP only and not by hostname. I have to access DB which is on my home computer (workgroup) from office laptop(domain). How do I achieve this? I search the internet and found we can enable sharing by IP. But my usecase will require access to the workgroup computer using hostname from laptop.

Connect File Server To Desktop And Laptop Through A Workgroup?

Jul 25, 2012

I am trying to connect my file server to my desktop and laptop through a workgroup, however while my Laptop and desktop recognize each other, they will not recognize the file server. I have tried what I can including setting firewall exceptions and even disabling it and nothing will change. Both the file server and desktop run Windows XP SP3 while the laptop runs Windows 7 Home Premium. the file server is connected to a 5-port router which is then connected to a 10-port hub that is connected to the gateway, while the laptop and desktop are connected to a different 5-port router which is connected to the same 10-port hub. I am saying thing also because I think it is a hardware problem since the laptop/desktop can connect perfectly as they are on the same router.

Cisco WAN :: 2811 HWIC Switch Cannot Be Configured As A Network Interface

Apr 14, 2012

I currently have a Cisco 2621 powering a network at our  co-location facility... It's a simple setup and is working well. The colo  provides a redundant HSRP uplink, so I have their two uplinks going into  a Dell switch. From that Dell switch I have a uplink into  FastEthernet0/0 on the 2621, configured with my routing network, and  then FastEthernet0/1 gets an address from my block of routable IP. FastEthernet0/1 then plugs into another  Dell switch where I have all my servers connected. The servers get public routable IP addresses and use the address on FastEthernet0/1 as their default gateway.

It's time to upgrade off the 2621, so I aquired a Cisco 2811 which has two FE interfaces, as well as a modular HWIC-4ESW switch. My question is, can I get rid of the Dell Switch A in the setup above and just use the internal switch on the 2811 to accomplish the same thing? And I if I did this, would my two uplinks from the colo plug into ports 1 and 2 of that HWIC, and then port 3 would physically connect into FE 0/0? Or can I logically do that via configuration in the Cisco? I'm not sure how all this works and haven't received the new router yet, so I thought I'd get a head start and reach out to the experts.

My second question is unrelated, but each port on the HWIC switch cannot be configured as a network interface right? I'm pretty sure they can't as they aren't considered network interfaces but just thought I'd ask.

Connect 2 Systems On Lan With Different Workgroup

Jul 17, 2011

I have a few laptops at home and one desktop. I also have a work laptop which I carry to work every day. I have a lan at home. The computers are connected through a wireless router though my pc is connected through a lan cable. We are able to share files and content.

I sometimes connect my office laptop at home. Though the laptop connects to the network but I am unable to transfer or share files to other computers running Windows Vista/7. After a bit of research I figured this is because the workgroup name of my office laptop is different than the systems at home. I dont want to change the workgroup name of my office laptop as it will create problems at work.

How can I connected my office laptop to the network and transfer files if the workgroup name is different? It does show names of computers on network but when I try to connect a username & password box pops up.
