Routers / Switches :: Can A Workgroup Switch Makes Network Crash
Jan 30, 2011
I work in a school department and wanted to hardwire two computers in my class using a workgroup switch. I only had one data port in my class. The tech guy told me the switch could cause the entire network to crash. Is that true? I thought a switch was just a passthrough device.
First , I have installed the router and modem correctly , and i connected it to the switch , So the other devices connected to the internet but not connected to the workgroup so i can't share the files between the PC's ? Modem >>> Router >>> Switch >>> PC's
I have a building with 30+ pc's, printers and cameras. I do not have a "server" setup, however I want them to be connected to the T1 line comming into the building for internet as well as file sharing, etc.Currently, I have the T1 line connecting to as Linksys E3000 wireless router. From there I have a cable connected to the wireless router (it has 4 ports also) and then going to a Netgear FS524 (24 Port 10/100 MBPS Fast Ethernet Switch) via port number 24. I then have another CAT5 cable connected to a port on this switch, extending to a D-Link DES-1024D (another 24 Port, 10/100 switch)I then have the 30+ CAT5 cable coming into all three of said devices... No then, I get Internet connection on all units, the problem is that I cannot see all of the devices.
Have one switch and network.PC number one have win98 and network adapter and connected to the switch.PC number two have winXP and network adapter and connected to the switch same as win98.Network works on win98 and winxp they see each other.internet working on winxp but dont work on win98
wireless connection of my router, which is a ZTE ZXV10 W300 provided by my ISP. Me and my brother have our PCs on the same room and have decent signal at all times. The problem is that when my sister connects her netbook to the network wifi becomes unusable for us. I mean normally ping to the router from my pc is 1ms and when she connects it will get to the thousands or even time out. My sisters netbook has an atheros 9285 card, and the other two computer have a d-link n adapter, and a us robotics g adapter. I have tried multiple configurations such as b/g or b/g/n, with wpa or wpa2 but the problem persists. I checked my sisters netbook for viruses thouroughly, with malwarebytes, microsoft security essential +2-3 other antiviruses and none found anyhting. I also updated her driver to the latest i found. I am getting desperate here, and i do wish i wont have to buy another router. Just to clarify the problem is not internet speed, should be able to handle (and used to be) 5-6 computers at once, it is the connection to the router itself.
......................Computer 3 Router 1 points to a VPNRouter 2 access to the internetComputer 3 needs to access router 1 (VPN). Both Computer 2 and 3 are in a different room than computer 1, and router 1. Computer 2 is networked via cat5e to router 2.Is is possible to have Computer 2 and 3 share the cat5e, yet access different routers?
Just updated the fw to 188.8.131.52 and after a while, the device crashed wth the following message in the flash log.

The switch was running a relatively basic configuration and not under any appreciable load when the crash occurred. It had been running 18.104.22.168 for quite some time and had been restarted several times since the firmware upgrade. I have not been able to reproduce the issue on demand.
The switch 6500-E is frequently crashing whenever the pm scp process reach 100% .I got it under the command "remote command switch show proce cpu".How to solve the problem. I opened the TAC and the engineer says to upgrade the image12.2(18) sxf.Is there any other work around that would avoid to reimage the switch and reloading.
About an hour ago I had the master switch on one of my 3750x (WS-C3750X-48PF-S) stacks crash. The only two items we've found that could have caused this issue are the roughly 1.3 million big buffer misses and several of the following in the syslog
SLT:WARN:No exporter configured for smartlog! I do not have smartlogging turned on, nor is there a netflow exporter configured
sh logging smartlogsmartlog is disabledsmartlog exporter:smartlog pkt length: 64 Total pkts processed: 0Total DHCP Snooping pkts processed: 0Total DAI pkts processed: 0Total IPSG pkts processed: 0Total ACL pkts processed: 0
I did not see any traffic spikes prior to the crash.
This stack has been stable since it's last IOS upgrade from 12.2(58)SE1 to 12.2(58)SE2 back in October 2011 so this has me a little worried.
I am not able to find the exact bug for Cisco 3750E stack - Debug Exception (Could be NULL pointer dereference) Exception (0x2000) error. Closest i can find is CSCsa72400 which only affects ver 12.2(20)SE4.All the stacks (3 switches) are running 12.2(50)SE3, It appears that the switch 1 crashed and reloaded. My hunch is its software but i cant find any related bugs. It could be hardware issue as well ?
I have many WiSM WLC's running 22.214.171.124. One WLC was rebooted few days ago but there was no crash file and nothing in logs say why this issue happened. There was a power problem at the same time the WLC rebooted (some switches and PE's was rebooted as well) but if it is a power issue why only one WLC inside the WiSM rebooted and the other WLC is still working fine with no reboot?I have 5 WiSM modules connected to the same 6500 box, only one WLC was rebooted which indicates a crash but no crash file registered for it.Is there anyway I can find the reason why that WLC was rebooted?
I can telnet to switch from checkpoint firewall access port and from switch directly. I can ping/traceroute successfully to the switch. Access-lists 14 & 15 are allowing the traffic I want. The router on the other side of the FW has 2 static routes and a default static route set up.
Here is some of the config from my switch:service tcp-keepalives-in
service timestamps debug datetime msec localtime show-timezone
service timestamps log datetime msec localtime show-timezone
aaa authentication login default local enable line none[code].....
Not sure of checkpoint firewall config....I have run wireshark when trying to telnet and I get no syn-ack back from remote switch. Just 3 consecutive syn attempts.I have some switches I can connect to and they go right through the 3 way TCP handshake and I cannot find any differences in the configs between the successful connections and the unsuccessful connections.
Our switch had a little crash-fest this morning at 2:30 AM. I did find a web page about diagnosing Software Forced Crash Exceptions, but it did not look like ours was one of the more easily-identifiable ones.
It may be worth noting that we've only used this switch for about a month, everything seemed fine until now. When we got the switch it did not have any GigE modules, and this week we put 2 into it and have been using them for 2 servers.
It looks like the switch was crashing repeatedly over a period of 20 minutes, and then it stopped and normalized. In the logs of the router that this switch uplinks into, we could see the ethernet port flapping during the time that the switch wasn't reachable.
Here's the Show Stack on the switch:

I want to setup an home network with a wireless router and use multiple switches for wired connections through out my home. I currently have an Airport extreme hooked up to a cable modem and a leviton gateway hooked up to the Airport. The 2 computers connected to the Leviton are on a windows 7 homegroup and share fine, but won't share or discover any wireless device connected to Airport. My main goal is to have a wireless/wired network with all computers sharing information with each other. I want 2-3 wired switches/gateways with a min of 2 devices connected to each, connected to my wireless router whiich is connected to cable modem.
I have two windows 2008 machines on vmware. I assign 10.0.0.1/8 and 10.0.0.2/8 to them. Both connected to same virtual switch. Now should these two PCs ping each other? In my case they dont ping. What i get is Repy from <ip address>: Destination host unreachable.
Running EIGRP on network. Hub router connects to remote router via EIGRP and then I have 2 static routes getting traffic to the switch behind the checkpoint firewall(Edge-1 UTM). Some switches I can access while others I cannot.
would like to know how a bandwidth gets distributed in switches.for example consider a scenariowhere i have a coreswitch A and coreswitch B connected between each other througha a 1Giga Fiber, now each of my core switche are connected to two edge switches through fiber links. all edge switches have giga ports. now if i connect a pc with giga link in th edge switch of coreswitch A and tansfer a file to a PC connnected to the edge switch in network B.. how much bandwidth would i get?how does the switch allocate bandwidth?
I have a qsee dvr that is hooked up to a switch that is connected to a wirless router/modemI have forwarded the correct ports that I need to according to qsee, ports 80, 9000 and 100I can access the dvr from any computer on the network via its local ip address, but when I try to access it via a computer off of the network via the real world ip address of the network, I cannot access it. I can ping the real world ip address of the network and it is successful.
I'm using a RV220W in my home office. Before this router I was. using a Sitecom router which did not cause any problems. I have setup a home network. The RV220W connects to the provider modem. The client components connect to the RV220W. Which acts as DHCP gateway. The DHCP features of the modem are disabled. I have assigned all network client devices to the same workgroup. I have to windows 7 PC's. one of them acts as fileserver. when trying to acces it from the other fixed PC or via a laptop the fileserver is visible but not accessable. I can not open it and access the shared folders. It has worked for a brief moment, but without changing any settings it stop working. I have never had accessability problems with the sitecom router. I have installed the latest firmware and tried rebooting the router several times. I have also started again with the factory defaults.
I have a Modem/Router combo and am trying to plug an 8 port switch directly into it and then have wireless AP's and other hardwired devices plugged into the switch. Normally, when I plug a switch into a router it requires no set up. This one on the other hand, will not work.
ISP Cable in Smart box. 4 cat 5 cables from various rooms in house to feed cable ready TV's and one from my computer room. Can I connect all cat 5's to switch that is connected to cable modem located in Smart box and connect Wireless Router to cat 5 in the computer room and expect router to work properly?
